Some 200 years ago these majestic mountains were called Pilot Knobs by fur trappers because they could be seen from miles away. One of the Tetons’ tallest peaks, Teewinot, meaning “many pinnacles” in the Shoshone language, references the region’s ancestral roots. The 1800s homesteading tradition in the nearby town of Jackson gives the valley its moniker “The Last of the Old West.” Gazing out at verdant plains, towering crags, and fields of lemon-yellow balsamroot blooms, visitors understand why the park has become an emblem of the American West.

Why Go

Adventure athletes travel to the park to climb historic mountaineering routes, backpack into wildflower-strewn basins, or ski down advanced backcountry slopes in winter. But the park is also ideal for leisurely activities like biking, photography, and canoeing—set against the backdrop of the meandering Snake River, numerous lakes and streams, and the Grand Teton range.

Although a fraction of the size of nearby Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton offers equally dramatic mountain vistas and impressive wildlife viewing. Outdoor photographer and Jackson local Steven Shelesky says it’s common to see wildlife, including elk, moose, pronghorn, and bison, while simply driving through the park.

Best Views

Shelesky says getting up early to catch a sunrise in the park is well worth the effort. “The entire Teton range is east facing, which makes for an amazing spectacle,” he says. Located about 350 yards from the parking lot, Schwabacher Landing offers particularly memorable views of a beaver pond off the Snake River. “You can see beautiful reflections of the Grand Teton on the water’s surface,” says Shelesky.

Nearby, the Snake River Overlook is another vista Shelesky recommends. The famous viewpoint captured by photographer Ansel Adams in 1942 highlights the curving river framed by the towering Tetons. Look for the Snake River Overlook turnout sign off Highway 191/89.

Best Hikes

Beginning at the Taggart Lake Trailhead on Teton Park Road, Taggart Lake is an easy hike that leads to a gorgeous lakeside picnic spot, where the Tetons reflect in the water. The three-mile round-trip trail rises just over 300 feet as it crosses bridges and weaves through a grove of quaking aspen trees, whose leaves tremble at the slightest breeze. For a more moderate hike, it’s well worth the extra steps to tack on the Taggart Lake-Bradley Lake Loop, which takes you 5.6 miles to both lakes. Both trails are also popular snowshoeing routes in winter.

Hikers looking for a more challenging route can follow the roaring Cascade Creek up the Forks of Cascade Canyon trail, where the glacially carved landscape leads to numerous viewpoints, including Inspiration Point and Hidden Falls. The 9.8-mile out-and-back route can be made more challenging during the day or as part of an overnight trip (permits required), by trekking 14.1 miles to Lake Solitude. Best Drives

Teton Park Road and Highway 191/89/26 make a 42-mile loop that takes you to several pullouts and viewing sites in the park. Signal Hill Mountain Summit Road winds to the top of Signal Hill (nearly a thousand feet), where you’ll find two overlooks of the plunging Jackson Hole valley. The narrow road is five miles long and closed during winter.

Wildlife Spotting

Whether you’re on the slopes of Mt. Moran or canoeing Jackson Lake, wildlife abounds in Grand Teton National Park. Find elk and pronghorn in the sharp sagebrush of Timbered Island, just south of the Jenny Lake Visitor Center. Bison and moose roam the woods near various overlooks including Oxbow Bend along the Snake River, while bald eagles and osprey circle the sky.

Climb up the glacially carved Cascade Canyon trail and look for yellow-bellied marmots as you listen for the high-pitched chirp of pikas, a small lagomorph related to rabbits and hares. You just might see them collecting wildflowers and grass, which they store in hay piles for cold, snowy winters.

Iverson says she particularly enjoyed paddling one of the many lakes. That’s when “you get this whole expansive view of everything around you,” she says. Visitors can rent canoes or kayaks from Signal Mountain Marina and the Colter Bay Marina, among other outfitters. Paddling is generally recommended in the morning before afternoon winds arrive.

Activities and Excursions

The Tetons are a steep mountain range that have attracted mountaineers and climbers like Irene Ortenburger and Yvon Chouinard. Because of their steep pitch and high elevation, many of the park’s high-altitude trails may be inaccessible for the first-time hiker.

Experienced hikers are drawn to the park for its challenging backpacking routes, including the sought-after Teton Crest Trail, which follows the range’s spine through wildflower-filled peaks from Teton Pass to String Lake. Jackson Lake Lodge’s naturalist programs illuminate the world of wildlife in the park, including birds of prey, mountain lions, and grizzly bears. Outfitters like Solitude Float Trips or National Park Float Trips guide families on scenic rafting tours on the Snake River. Rafts generally put in at Deadmans Bar and take two to three hours to float 10 miles to Moose Landing, passing through a mellow stretch of the river. Where To Stay

There are eight campgrounds and seven lodges within the park’s boundaries. Stay on the glimmering shores of Jackson Lake at the upscale Signal Mountain Lodge or find a more rustic option at American Alpine Club Grand Teton Climbers’ Ranch, which hosts communal cabins popular with climbers and other outdoor enthusiasts. The National Park Service lists more options on its website.

Campers have over a thousand sites to choose from, ranging from $10 to just over $100 per night. Book six months in advance through Recreation.gov. Colter Bay Tent Village has 66 “tent cabins” with wood walls and canvas tent roofs. The small cabins include covered porches, bunk beds, and wood-burning stoves.

Note that all lodges, cabins, and campsites within the park close during the winter, but there are plenty of options in the bustling town of Jackson. About 13 miles from the park’s Moose entrance, Jackson has numerous restaurants, historic hotels, and live music venues.

You can also find lodging in Teton Village at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain resort. The charming area is just under two miles from the park’s southern Granite Canyon entrance, making it a great basecamp for skiers.

Need to know

The park is located in northwest Wyoming near the border of eastern Idaho, accessible via three entrances: Granite Canyon, Moose, and Moran Junction. Since Grand Teton is connected to Yellowstone National Park by the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway, most visitors tack Grand Teton onto a multiday trip to Yellowstone.

July and August are the most popular times to visit Grand Teton. May, September, and October see fewer crowds and cooler temperatures. Although wintertime shuts down many amenities and roads, it’s a great time to experience the region by snowshoe, cross-country skis, or snowmobile.

Born in the late 80’s, Indigo is the daughter of the late Cedar Addams and Clover Addams, a couple that had met at a Woodstock festival in 1985, when her father was only 18 years old, and her mother 16. Instantly the couple had fallen in love during the rise of the War on Drugs, and found common interest of their use of marijuana. Cedar (formerly named Matthew) had come from a family of wealth from the city, while Clover had traveled in hippie vans and lived a nomadic lifestyle most of her life. A year later, Cedar had escaped his life in the city and joined Clover; the two were married months later and a year after that, gave birth to their first child, Indigo. In order to provide for their growing family (Indigo’s little brother Ziggy joining them only five years later), the couple began to cultivate their own hemp farm, eventually using it as a business tool to keep their bills paid when they decided to settle in a home in Ontario, Canada.

Growing up, Indigo would consider her childhood rather enjoyable. She grew to learn that the bloodshot eyes and genuine laughter of her parents were to be expected and not feared; and at the young age of twelve she began to smoke marijuana with the assistance of her parents. She attended music festivals and Woodstock with her parents, constantly being surrounded by good music and even better energy. By the age of thirteen, she could out-roll those more experienced than herself simply by watching them, getting used to the motions and beginning to make herself quite useful for her parents business. Despite the presence of drugs in her home, Indigo was very much in good hands with her parents and had one of the most loving childhoods a child could ask for. Once her little brother was born, Cedar and Clover bought a summer home in Washington, where the family would travel every summer in order to create memories that would last forever.

As the young girl matured, Indigo seemed to become rather popular among all genders at school. This wasn’t exactly an issue - her parents had always taught her that it wasn’t what was between a person’s legs, but rather between their ears and underneath their rib cage. Following this mentality, Indigo found herself romantically involved at the ripe young age of fourteen, and eventually losing her virginity to a girl at the age of fifteen. She’d maintained relationships throughout her life if she so desired, but Indigo much preferred to keep things casual between her partners. During her second year of University (she had been granted admission into Columbia, majoring in Psychology with a minor in History), Indigo had developed an emotional, as well as physical, connection with her Political Science professor; a man that ‘just seemed to have his life together.’ It took Indigo months to pursue him, and even longer for him to respond to her advances due to his devotion to his wife and family. Eventually, Indigo had cracked him - the two continued a romantic as well as sexual relationship up until the last few months of her sophomore year, when he abruptly ended the relationship and transferred schools. Indigo never heard from him again. She was devastated. Two months following her and Liam’s breakup, Indigo’s parents were hit at an intersection by a teenage boy who had run a red light because he was looking at his cell phone. At the age of twenty, Indigo and her brother had become orphans. The boy behind the wheel was sixteen, and was given a two year sentence in a juvenile detention center, then transported to a prison for a nine year sentence for vehicular homicide, with a required six months of parole.

Indigo didn’t know what to do. Her entire world came crashing down around her, all that was left was Ziggy; who was only fifteen at the time. Quickly and in a blur, Indigo fell into alcohols trap. She’d dropped out of Columbia soon after receiving the news, moving back home to be with Ziggy - legally she wasn’t allowed to leave him now that her parents were gone. Soon, it wasn’t a normal day unless Ziggy came home from school and found his older sister blacked out in the kitchen or bathroom, or in his parents old bed. He’d spend hours cleaning vomit rather than doing homework. The amount of alcohol bottles that stacked up in the garbage or around the house was enough to warrant Indigo’s rehabilitation when CPS showed up two months later to check on how she was doing raising her little brother. Ziggy fell into the foster care system, and Indigo was sent away to a facility. Or rather, four or five. Nothing could keep her sober as the ghosts of her parents constantly haunted her - she just wanted to get away. Once he was old enough to drive, Ziggy frequently visited Indigo while she was in care. During this time Indigo also learned that she was unable to have children; she had polycystic ovary syndrome.

Eventually, by the age of twenty-two, Indigo slowly but surely began to sober up. She returned to school, remaining sober for a year and half before she had spiraled out of control yet again, her relapse including her getting behind the wheel and crashing, landing herself in the hospital in critical condition. Remaining in rehab for the remainder of her college years, Indigo completed online courses for her degree and again left rehab to join society; returning to Columbia for one last year to complete her masters before taking up a position spirituality and sexuality professor at Washington University. There, she met her best friend and current lwife, Aspen Addams (nee Whitlock).

Indigo and Aspen had met by chance when Aspen had been a TA at the same school, and had been instructed to drop off a textbook in Indigo’s classroom. From there; their story wrote itself. They had agreed on something purely physical at first, but that agreement had burned into something much stronger that neither woman could explain, until those three little words fell from Indigo’s lips (and Aspen’s a few days later). Their relationship was taboo, as Aspen was a student at the time. That didn’t stop the pair from moving in together, settling in Indigo’s family’s old summer home in Washington, along with (now) their golden retriever puppy, Pinnacle. Two years into their relationship, Indigo proposed to Aspen, and was heartbroken when the blonde rejected her; though the couple remained together.

After her Visa had expired, Indigo and Aspen had spent a few months in Indigo’s original hometown, Mont Royal, in Canada as she awaited the renewal of her Visa. Upon getting it, the couple moved back to the states, and Indigo once again took up her position at Washington University, continuing her and Aspen’s life as if nothing had changed. Eventually Indigo missed the presence of her younger brother, and the couple made the journey to New York City and haven’t left since.

Another defining moment of the debacle came last year, when CIA-backed groups fought against other CIA-backed groups:

The Washington Post announced the cancellation of the CIA support program last week, claiming -- without evidence -- that the move was made to placate Russia:

The termination of the program was confirmed by SOCOM Gen. Tony Thomas at the Aspen Security Forum on Friday:

As I reported here at PJ Media in February, the CIA had already begun shutting down the weapons pipeline to the "rebel" groups:

Predictably, the "rebel" groups began flocking to al-Qaeda as soon as the CIA pipeline began to slow.

In response to the cancellation announcement, cheerleaders of the "vetted moderate rebels" complained that the U.S. hadn't supported the groups enough. But that talking point was rebutted by Obama nearly three years ago. In an August 2014 interview with Tom Friedman in the New York Times, Obama dismissed the notion that more weapons would have given the "rebels" any kind of edge, and he expressed frustration at the inability to find enough "moderates":

With “respect to Syria,” said the president, the notion that arming the rebels would have made a difference has “always been a fantasy. This idea that we could provide some light arms or even more sophisticated arms to what was essentially an opposition made up of former doctors, farmers, pharmacists and so forth, and that they were going to be able to battle not only a well-armed state but also a well-armed state backed by Russia, backed by Iran, a battle-hardened Hezbollah, that was never in the cards.”

Even now, the president said, the administration has difficulty finding, training and arming a sufficient cadre of secular Syrian rebels: “There’s not as much capacity as you would hope.”

And yet, just a month later the GOP congressional leadership passed $500 million in additional funds for an eventual U.S.-backed, Pentagon-trained army of 15,000 "vetted moderates" to combat ISIS. In less than a year, that half-billion dollar boondoggle approved by Congress turned into a disaster. By July 2015, fewer than 60 fighters had been successfully vetted and trained -- costing taxpayers nearly $4 million for each fighter:

And immediately after the Pentagon-trained and -armed fighters left their camp in Turkey and crossed the border into Syria, they promptly disappeared. As I reported here at PJ Media, most of the fighters had been captured -- along with all their weapons -- by al-Qaeda.:

The Pentagon quickly denied the al-Qaeda abduction -- but our report was confirmed by a published statement shortly thereafter:

The remainder of Obama's 54-man anti-ISIS army were plagued by more abductions and attacks by al-Qaeda:

Some reports indicated that the fighters of the Pentagon's "train-and-equip" program had been sold out by our NATO ally Turkey:

Just a year after GOP congressional leadership passed $500 million for a "vetted moderate" anti-ISIS army, Pentagon officials were telling Congress that only four or five trained fighters were still left in the field where 5,400 had been authorized to be trained by December 2015.

Obama refused to take responsibility. The White House quickly shifted the blame for the "train-and-equip" debacle:

By any measure, President Obama’s effort to train a Syrian opposition army to fight the Islamic State on the ground has been an abysmal failure. The military acknowledged this week that just four or five American-trained fighters are actually fighting.  

But the White House says it is not to blame. The finger, it says, should be pointed not at Mr. Obama but at those who pressed him to attempt training Syrian rebels in the first place -- a group that, in addition to congressional Republicans, happened to include former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Remarkably, the Pentagon unsuccessfully pushed for another round of "train-and-equip" just a few months later. Congress wisely demurred:

All that was left following that disaster was the CIA weapons program:

Weapons Leakage, Defections, and Betrayal

One of the chronic problems with the CIA support program was that weapons would regularly leak from "vetted" groups associated under the so-called "Free Syrian Army" (FSA) to designated terrorist organizations, including Jabhat al-Nusra, the Syrian al-Qaeda affiliate, as well as ISIS. This especially was true after the CIA began shipping U.S. TOW anti-tank missiles to the rebels.

This weapons leakage would occur with astounding regularity, and yet Obama, with the full blessing of GOP leaders, waived restrictions on arming terrorist organizations to be able to transfer weapons to the "Syrian opposition."

Initially, the transfer of weapons from CIA-backed groups to jihadist organizations was so prevalent that the U.S. and the UK suspended their weapons support programs in December 2013. One report in February 2014 claimed that ISIS had seized $500 million in weapons intended for the FSA.

Yet in April 2014, the CIA began shipping weapons again. The problem only got progressively worse:

A German journalist who spent 10 days embedded with ISIS in Iraq and Syria told France24 that ISIS was obtaining weapons supplied by Western governments and being sold by the FSA:

Todenhofer went on to say that the IS militants are being armed by the West -- if only indirectly -- as Western moves to arm moderate Syrian rebels have backfired.  

“They buy the weapons that we give to the Free Syrian Army, so they get Western weapons -- they get French weapons … I saw German weapons, I saw American weapons,” he said.

“The best seller of weapons is the Free Syrian Army, which is financed by NATO, financed probably also by France, but at least by the United States.”

There were also wholesale defections from CIA-backed "vetted moderate" groups to the same terrorist organizations:

And in at least one case, there was outright betrayal by one of the CIA's "vetted moderate" partners:

ISIS leaders openly bragged about elements of the CIA-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA) defecting to their side:

For a long time, Western and Arab states supported the Free Syrian Army not only with training but also with weapons and other materiel. The Islamic State commander, Abu Yusaf, added that members of the Free Syrian Army who had received training — from the United States, Turkey and Arab military officers at an American base in Southern Turkey — have now joined the Islamic State. “Now many of the FSA people who the West has trained are actually joining us,” he said, smiling.

That basically sums up the quality of the CIA's "vetting" efforts. These defections raise serious questions about who performed the vetting.
