Gregory Abbott

Gregory Joel Abbott (born April 2, 1954) is an American singer, musician, composer and producer. Although he continues to record to date, he is best known for his singles in the mid-1980s including his platinum single, "Shake You Down", from his 1986 debut album.

Biography

Early life

Abbott was born in Harlem, New York City, New York, United States. Abbott's parents came from Venezuela and Antigua. During his early years, Abbott's mother taught him how to play piano and encouraged him to develop vocally. Before his career as a musician, Abbott studied psychology at University of California, Berkeley, and creative writing at Stanford; where he won a Wallace Stegner fellowship. Abbott taught English at University of California, Berkeley.

Teaching career

Abbott was a professor of English.

Music career

One of Abbott's first opportunities in his studio was an album for an independent record label, which gave him the opportunity to do a duet with Whitney Houston. Continuing on, Abbott produced for the group EQ on Atlantic Records. In 1986, Abbott released his first solo album, Shake You Down. The title track for the album was a success, going platinum and topping the Billboard Hot 100. The album's second single, "I Got The Feelin’ (It's Over)", reached Number 5 on the R&B chart. With the strength of its singles, the album propelled to platinum status and earned Abbott several awards.

Internationally, Abbott carried much success, winning first prize at the Tokyo Music Festival. The title track of his second album, "I'll Prove It To You" which was released in 1988, was featured on a Japanese movie soundtrack. In Belgium, he performed with Princess Stephanie of Monaco. Over the years much of his new music has been released via singles on his own Mojo Man Entertainment label. Abbott has continued with his R&B sound but, in addition, he has added a Caribbean/soul feel as well. In 2011, an album entitled Drop Your Mask was released; and Abbott continues to release new singles a few times a year.

Personal life

Abbott was married to American singer Freda Payne from 1976 until 1979. Payne and Abbott had a son, Gregory Abbott, Jr., who was born on September 19, 1977, Payne's 35th birthday. In 1979, it was reported that his wife Payne was suing for divorce.

I was 12 years old when our Grandmother passed, but I’ve never forgotten what she told us: Be kind, Honest, Hard working & Proud of who you are! Never forget where you came from! Grandma Nippy would tell us stories of her & my Grandfather “Joe”. He was an Oilman through & through. He met her in Houston, when it was just a small Oil town; where they fell in love. She always told us he was her Knight in Shining Armor. He passed some years later. We never got to meet him, but we knew him nevertheless; Our Grandmother made sure of that!

My name is Harold Joseph Newport & this is my Story:

I always said to myself, Harry: You’re going places! I’m lucky to have had the parents I did, because they taught me to go after my Dreams.

After returning from Afghanistan & being discharged from the Army, I did just that!

I love the Sea & am Captain of the “Willow”, best little Tour Boat in “The Keys”! Always liked going it alone & never thought about getting married until I met Julia.

She, along with friends hired “The Willow” to tour the 113 Mile journey across the prettiest Islands this side of Heaven! She was more than Beautiful, she was a Dream come true & my heart nearly stopped when I saw her!

Suddenly, going it alone wasn’t important to me anymore! I said to myself: Harry, you’re gonna marry that girl; so I did everything possible to get her attention. After returning to the shore of Key Largo, I ask her to dinner & to my surprise she says: Yes, I was hoping you would to ask me out!

My heart begins to pound in my chest. I'm ecstatic! So begins my journey of Love!!!

I make reservations at “Sundowners”, It’s famous for foods of the Caribbean.

I arrive at the “Hotel Marriott” on the Bay & knock on her hotel door, Room# 103 at 6:00 pm sharp.

She opens the door! Hi Harry, you’re right on time! I'm looking at a real Lady. She is absolutely Gorgeous & I'm nervous as Hell!

We arrive at “Sundowners” at 7:30pm. We order Shrimp & Mahi with Lemongrass sauce, White wine & Arora Marti for desert. The meal is absolutely delicious. We enjoy ourselves immensely. It’s like we’re made for each other!

After dinner I take her Dancing at the “Caribbean” Club. I’m with the prettiest girl there & proud of it! We dance until closing. On the way back to her hotel, we stop for coffee & we talk until dawn. I don’t want it to ever end but I know I have to get her back to her room. When we get to her door, I just kiss her. She looks at me, smiles, wraps her arms around me & kisses me, really kisses me; she says; Harry, I had a wonderful time. Thank you. I ask her: Can I see you again? Of course she says: I’m free today! Call me, you got the number!!! Ok I reply, I will certainly call you! She winks at me & says: See you later Alligator & shuts the door. I kicked my feet together & tell myself: God you’re lucky Harry….

I give her time to get some sleep, call her & ask: What do you want to do today?

She replies: I want to see the Dolphins swim Harry, I love Dolphins Harry; can you take me to see the Dolphins? I answer: Your wish is my Command Milady!

I pick her up at 2:00pm, she’s wearing Shorts with a Black Bandeau. She's Beautiful & I’m in awe! We take the “Willow” out to see the Dolphins swim. She says: I always loved Dolphins. They bring you luck you know? They brought us together Harry! She asks: Harry, Do you believe in love at first sight? I say: I do indeed. I fell in love with you at first sight! She replies: I know Harry, I sensed it. Harry she says: I love you too!

We get back to Shore at 8:00pm or so & go for dinner at the Hotel. Afterwards, I escort her up to her room & open the door for her! Harry she says: Stay with me tonight? I answer: Of course I will! This night is the beginning of the rest of my life!

We stand a moment by the bed, & just look at each other. I take her in my arms, caress her face; look into her eyes & say: I love you! She replies: Me too my Harry, I love you! I gently lay her down on the bed. Her beauty takes my breath away & she is my every Dream. I begin to caress her body with my lips. Like a Panther on the prowl, I taste her every essence moving downward; as if searching for my next meal. I find myself between her thighs, hungering for what awaits me. I taste the hanging fruit & it’s sweet. She quivers & moans, calling my name. I’m aroused & can feel myself throbbing. I move my tongue up & downward, slipping it inside & out of her; driving her insane with pleasure. I return to the fruit of life, for the much anticipated nectar about to flow. I take it between my lip’s hitting it with my tongue in a fast motion until she explodes, releasing her love juices. I waste not a drop as it drunkens me with ecstasy.

I move back to her side & say: I love you. She looks at me & replies: I love you too. She sits up, forces me down as she moves to take my throbbing Manhood into her mouth, pumping it dry. The pain of ecstasy is great & lasting, as she’s careful to draw it out slowly. She sits up, smiles at me, then returns to my side, stroking me until I become aroused again. We make love until both of us are exhausted, falling asleep embraced in each other’s arms. When we awake we talk about us. Then she says: Harry, I’ve got to go home to Louisiana tomorrow Harry! I didn’t know what to say! I ask: Don’t go? I say: You can’t, besides I want you to meet my Parents. They live in Madison County, about 3 hours from here. Please Darling stay? She answers: Ok Hary. I’ll stay. I love you Harry, & I want to meet your parents. Ok then I say, it’s settled! I will call my Mother today & let her know.

I call my mother that evening & tell her I’m bringing a girl home to meet her tomorrow. She’s out of her mind with happiness. She says: Harold, it’s about time son!

I call Julia & tell her: we're expected at my parents house tomorrow. We both decide to rest up so we're at our best for Mother & Father. I pick Julia up at 8:00am & we head for the Airport. Madison County is approximately 740 miles from Key Largo so, flying is the way to go!

We land at Valdosta Regional Airport, in Georgia at 1:30pm. Madison County is nestled in the corner of Florida Bordering Georgia. Father picks us up & is happy to see me. He asks: And who do we have here son? I answer: Father, this is Julia & I’m madly in love with her! He turns to me, smiles & says: Well, that is good news! Turns to Julia, says: I’m very happy to meet you. Now let’s go home, Mother’s expecting us!

The Mansion my Parents live in is only 30 minutes from the Airport. My Grandmother left it to us. It's a Beautiful old place, but much to large for me.

We reach Newport Mansion & my Mother is sitting on a swing out in the Courtyard waiting for us. I’m reminded of my days here as a child & how much time my Grandma Nippy spent with us. She taught us how to be who we are, & my Mother carried it over to our adulthood. Mother’s happy to see us. As soon as we step out of the car, she asks: Lemonade? All at once we answer: Please? Mother I say: I would like to introduce you to Julia. Father adds: And he’s madly in love with her! Smiles & raises his lemonade in a toast! Mother says: ‘O Goodie, that’s wonderful news, wonderful indeed. Come on, let’s sit here in the shade & catch up! She takes Julia by the hand and says: You sit here Dear, next to me. I want to get to know you. The two of them get along really well. Mother likes her, I can tell! We talk for hours, until we hear the Dinner bell! Dinner is served says the Butler! We go inside & are seated at the table. That huge table I remember so well. I whispered to Julia: What do you think of them my Love? She smiles & replies: I love them so much. Harry, I didn’t know you were rich! I say: I’m not my love, My Grandparents were in Oil & my parents inherited the place, not that they needed it. My father & Mother did quite well on their own. I had everything I ever needed growing up! Julia says: It’s all just Beautiful, Harry; I love you! I’m so happy you brought me here. Thank you Harry!

After dinner I propose to her, on one knee. I slip the ring on her finger & Say:

My Father shakes my hand, says: I’m proud of you Son & hugs Julia. Welcome to the Family Julia he says! The Butler brings in a Bottle of Armand de Brignac Ace of Spades Brut Gold Champagne. My Mother always had impeccable taste in wine. She had that in common with Grandma Nippy. It's already iced down, I think my Mother sensed I would propose tonight! The Butler pours each of us a glass, my Father; raises his Glass in a toast & says: May you be as Happy as we are! We raise our glasses back, & Mother adds: Here Here! I never seen my parents as happy as they are this night!

I married Julia Rae Marcantel 3 months later, on the grounds of Newport Mansion just like my Parents before me. Her parents flew in from Shreveport Louisiana & her Father, The Rev. James Ray Marcantel, walked her down the aisle. He & her Mother Rachael became close friends with my parents & remain so today! My siblings attended & were part of the Wedding. My sister Jamie drove in from Little Rock with her husband Bill, she was the “Maid of Honor”! My 2 Brothers Richard & Lewis flew in from Dallas. Richard is the oldest & was my “Best Man”. We're expecting our first child, a boy; in 6 months & we’ve never been happier. My parents are already buying out the Baby stores & Julia’s are in strong competition!

Puerto Rico from somebody on the ground, UPDATES

I've had many people in the US ask me how they can help, and I'll be honest that I haven't had the time to sit down and properly think about it (doesn't help that I have access to information on the internet for approx 15 minutes every day), but now I'm going to throw this out there. It's going to be long. Firstly, you need to understand the situation. Our infrastructure is destroyed. We have no power, in fact, the 4% of San Juan that managed to get electricity back lost it again. Last I read only 45% of the island had clean water services. This isn't just a lack of food and water. In case you hadn't heard, we're also approximately $72 billion in debt, and this hurricane is estimated to have cost over $30 billion in damages. You can send all the food and bottled water you want, and by all means please continue to do so because we are short on those, but there's also a huge distribution problem. Many supermarkets have not been able to open again because of structural damage. People are making lines for hours to be able to get into the few that are operational again. Gas stations? 80% were supposed to open again by Tuesday, September 26, yet people are still making literally 8+ hour lines (this is not an exaggeration) in the HOPES that they will be allowed to get some fuel. Many banks are only dispensing cash, which is vital because the vast majority of establishments can only accept cash at the moment, and the lines for the atms also can take hours. People have 5am to 7pm to be able to do all these things in one day because of curfew. Some hospitals are running out of diesel already, meaning that their back up generators are shutting down, so all those patients are being transferred to government hospitals that were already understaffed and understocked BEFORE Maria. To recap, in San Juan, where conditions are better, people are wholly dependent on cash to buy basic necessities, people have no power, in many cases no water, no communication with the outside world or the rest of Puerto Rico, no gasoline to get around, barely any places to get food, and entire hospitals are being evacuated. Literal boatloads of supplies are sitting in ports because the government can't distribute them, and some ships are just sitting there with their cargo. It's much worse outside of San Juan. Entire towns have no working gas stations, no hospitals, no running water, and no operational supermarkets (on top of no power or communication). Maria destroyed the vast majority of our crops. Many of these towns were also hit the hardest by the hurricane and saw thousands of families completely lose their homes. Now back to the distribution problem: you can send tons of food and articles of basic necessity, but if the government is having a hard time distributing them in the metropolitan area, it's literally downright impossible to get them to some of these towns. But what about the aid that has already been sent? Not enough. We need more resources, personnel, money, everything. Many of the rescue personnel and federal authorities already here came weeks ago because of Irma's devastation in other Caribbean islands and can't focus entirely on the disaster in Puerto Rico. Like I said earlier, distribution and mobilization is one of the key problems. I go around San Juan and don't see any of the people that came to help. Entire towns elsewhere in the island have not seen a single paramedic, soldier, or FEMA worker. The only places I've seen them are in the hotels they're staying at, so there's clearly a massive problem with mobilization. American politicians? I've seen some pay lip service to the plight of Puerto Rico, but not a single package or proposal. Local officials had to beg Congress to notice what was happening. President Trump was kind enough to give $1 million of his vast fortune to efforts in Houston (notice the sarcasm), yet he hasn't offered a single penny to efforts to rebuild Puerto Rico. He thought that criticizing NFL players exercising their right of free speech was more important.

OCTOBER 6TH UPDATE

I’ve been struggling with this update for a while because it’s almost been a week since the last and, well, a lot has both happened and not happened.

So Trump’s visit. It was what we were all expecting, despite the tiny flicker of hope that he would suddenly see the light and mobilize to help us. Trump held a press conference that didn’t allow any local reporters to ask questions, just the approved group that had travelled with him, because in true facist fashion Trump wanted to control the narrative and not face any hard hitting questions. He was taken to a wealthy area, where he visited one family and then was taken to a wealthy church for some basket paper towel games. He minimized our suffering and devastation by saying this wasn’t a disaster like Katrina (nevermind that the 3 Star General in the island has already compared the situation to Katrina and says this is worse than anything he has ever seen), praised the federal response, took a picture with a bunch of sell out local politicians, and then boarded his plane one hour before schedule to take off.

Trump came almost two weeks after Maria destroyed us. He was scheduled to be here for 5 hours and spent 4. Of those four hours, he spent 17 minutes talking to local officials about what we needed and the status of the situation. 17 minutes. He also just made fun of us in a press conference by imitating the Puerto Rican accent on camera and then outright laughing, but hey, he already told the island to go fuck itself and get over ourselves ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Moving on……

Things where I’m staying are getting better. My brother’s apartment has electricity again because he lives next to many hotels currently housing feds as well as the airport. The supermarket next door is open and has mostly non-perishable foods, lines to get in are about 1 to 1.5 hours. There’s also a few fast food joints open nearby. Overall, things are pretty good where I live, but at this point that means having water + electricity and access to some food. That’s what’s considered the good life right now in Puerto Rico, and it’s a luxury available to less than 10% of the island, two and a half weeks after the hurricane. Do NOT let the media fool you. Whatever pictures and videos you see of people going back to their normal lives is extremely misleading and likely taken in wealthy areas of San Juan. We’re still going through a humanitarian crisis, and millions are still in dire circumstances that have not changed since the hurricane hit.

The federal response continues to be underwhelming. They’ve been air dropping aid to cut off towns, but the pictures I’ve seen of this aid are often zip lock bags with one pack of cookies, one can of sausages, one Mots and a granola bar. These are the so called “care packages.”

I was watching a local news show and they interviewed the woman in charge of the reserves in the island (90% of which are Puerto Ricans that were already here btw). She outright admitted that the federal response has been slow and they’re not satisfied with what they’ve been doing, but that they’re working to do better. The show was Jay Fonseca’s October 5th 10pm program, in case anybody wants to hunt down the clip. I believe her, but I don’t have much faith in her superiors acting quickly.

Statistics time:

- That death toll of 16 people is utter garbage. The same day that Trump went on about our measly 16 people death toll, the official number was updated to 34. A few days after we finally got information from towns in the western side of the island and they reported at least 200 deaths just in that zone. Many hospitals are still processing their numbers, and people continue to bury loved ones in backyards.

- About 90% of the island is still without power, those with electricity are for the most part in the wealthier pockets of the metropolitan area. Even those areas still suffer from power outages that can last up to days at a time.

- About half the island still without water.

- Most of the hospitals are running, but many depend on generators that run on diesel and we still have a diesel crisis. Some are barely functional, as in doctors are performing surgeries with iPhone flashlights. 

- The big international airport is running 24 hours now and there’s less hysteria, but people are being told to get there four hours early and many still get their flights cancelled at the last minute. Some airlines are capping their prices at low prices under $100, but I don’t think that’s going to last for much longer. Cruise ships have started charging again to get people out.

- As of October 3rd FEMA had yet to authorize full disaster help, which Texas got 10 days after Harvey

Change of Plans-but Paradise Still Awaits

Long story short. Plane in Chicago has a crack in the windshield, so I missed my connection in Houston, and that was the last flight out to Belize. I stayed overnight with my cousins in Houston. Due to this, I was emailing the lady at the motorcycle rental company, where I was buying my bike. I told her I wouldn’t make it on Sunday, but could do next Sunday because that’s when Anna was leaving (I didn’t want to spend time going to get the bike and hanging at the DMV when we could be at the beach. It was also easier because I wouldn’t have to store the bike/worry about how Anna would transport from place to place if I had bought it and was riding it, because I didn’t want to drive her on the bike) Anna’s the best because she made it seem like spending 1 whole day of her 6 day trip at the DMV would be enjoyable. In emailing the motorcycle lady, Emma, she said if I came on the next Sunday, she might have sold it because another guy was also inquiring about it. If he came with money she would have to go with him. I understood, but it also got me thinking. Maybe I didn’t have to buy a bike.

-It would probably save a little money (though I would have to rent two bikes ((Guatemala and Costa Rica)) and spend money on a short flight from Guatemala City to San Jose, Costa Rica). And this is a wash because Panama is way more industrialized than Belize, and if I was able to, I may have been able to sell if for more. Who knows. Not me. Key points to follow.

-It would save a lot of stress. From navigating DMV in Belize. To border crossings. To bike storage along my trip (people will take your bike or just take it apart for pieces if it’s not locked up properly or stored in a safe parking lot). Not to mention logistics of getting to Cam and Rob on time (I was short on time getting to both of them, but mainly Rob in Costa Rica) And the security of not having to drive through Nicaragua, El Salvador and Honduras. I don’t think I would have ran into trouble...but now everyone can rest easier. Last piece of stress would be from having to sell my bike in Panama. Now I can spend more time in Costa Rica and then hit up Panama for a few days at the end, to see the Canal and a few other things.

Those are the pros. The cons are obvious: I would not longer be taking a motorcycle from Belize City to Panama City. Missing out on that adventure is a bummer, but I think it’s the right decision. Anna said she thought it was a God send that my first flight had a crack in the windshield...I agree (I mean come on-I got $30 worth of food vouchers for the Houston airport out of the deal so it was DEFINITELY WORTH IT.) #helloBBQbrisketxlargesmoothieskittesandpeanutbutterM&Ms

So I met Anna at customs (if you even want to call it that), and was so happy to see her. We got a taxi to the water taxi that would take us to Caye Caulker. A real small island northeast of Belize City. The roads were mostly unpaved and dusty, and our driver didn’t follow many driving procedures, but we got there on time before our water taxi drove us on our hour long ride, across the light blue ocean waters of Belize.

I couldn’t BELIZE how small the island was, but it was beautiful. We walked around and found a decent hostel, which thankfully had AC at the same price as the rooms without. BOOMTOWN. We enjoyed the AC for a few minutes in our dorm room, went to the bathroom, and then hit the strip of restaurants/shops for some food. It was hard to figure out what a good price was, so we went around from restaurant to restaurant until we got the feel for quality/prices. Eventually we settled on what most people would settle on while visiting a Caribbean Island. Chicken fried rice and beef chow mein, from Asians who spoke little english. Honestly, it was delicious and a ton of food, although being outside of the typical lobster/chicken/beans and rice usually served on the island. We laughed at ourselves as we realized what we did, but we left with full pockets and bellies.

It was late so we walked around through the streets filled with bars and restaurants before playing some pool at our hostel before bed. Anna smoked me 4-1.

Cockroach count: 3-not as many at Vietnam/Cambodia, but not the most exciting thing we saw all day.

Fun Fact: Belizeans all speak English, and use the US dollar. They actually all speak creole and use their own currency, but you can totally get by with only USD and English. Though they usually give you back change in Belize Dollars.

Gauging the Prospects for International Travel If 2020 was the summer of the pandemic-enforced road trip, many people seem to be hoping that 2021 will be the summer they can travel overseas. But that’s a big “if.” Roadblocks abound, among them, the rise of variant cases in popular destinations like Europe and confusion about the role that vaccine “passports” will play as people begin crossing borders. The recent pause on Johnson & Johnson’s coronavirus vaccine adds a new wrinkle. Still, there is reason for optimism. The number of vaccine doses administered each day in the United States has tripled in the last few months, and President Biden has said the United States is still on track to vaccinate every American adult who wants it by the end of May. Globally, the number of shots has been rising, with more than 840 million vaccines administered worldwide. Currently, Americans are restricted from entering many countries for nonessential trips. Travelers can check the U.S. State Department website for specific country entry restrictions, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website to view recommendations for international travelers (vaccinated and unvaccinated), and the C.D.C. COVID Data Tracker to monitor country conditions. There is a great deal of pent-up demand, “no question,” said Emily Weiss, the managing director of global travel services at the consulting and technology company Accenture, but there are currently no centralized systems for people to show their vaccination status. Countries and air carriers are working with technology companies to create multiple systems; the hope is that the systems will ultimately complement each other, rather than create confusion. Despite the roadblocks, the prospect of traveling abroad seems more promising now than it did just a few months ago. Here is how some major airlines, international hotel companies and big tour companies are planning for the resurgence of international travel. Air Travel In April 2019, there were about 1,400 international routes served by direct flights, according to John Grant, a senior analyst at OAG, which provides global travel data. That number dropped to 567 in April of 2020 and has bounced back a bit to about 850 direct routes now, he said. “We are unlikely to see all or even the majority of international markets that were served from the United States fully opened during the summer season, despite the best hopes of the airlines,” Mr. Grant said. As travel restrictions are loosened in some places though, airlines are responding quickly. When Iceland announced on March 16 that it would allow all vaccinated travelers into the country, Delta Air Lines followed soon after with an announcement that in May it would resume its Iceland routes from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and Minneapolis St. Paul Airport, and offer a new route from Boston. Some airlines seem to be eyeing May to expand international flights as vaccines become more available, and it’s been reported that the Biden administration may cancel existing travel restrictions for foreign nationals coming from Britain, Europe and Canada, around mid-May. Still, the market is very much in flux, Mr. Grant said, so even though airlines may be increasing their flight schedules, they will continue to adjust to demand, possibly consolidating some of the flights. United Airlines plans to increase international flights, but will still be operating just about half of its 2019 schedule. Among the flights it is eyeing are those between Chicago and Tokyo’s Haneda airport and Tel Aviv. The company also plans to increase service from Los Angeles to Sydney and Tokyo Narita. Beach destinations that are open to Americans have seen an increase in demand and United is scheduling 90 more flights per week to or from the Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America than it had in May 2019. Patrick Quayle, the vice president of the United Airlines’ international network, said the company had been adding more flights to countries that were open, but was uncertain when additional destinations like Canada — which is currently closed to American tourists and which has recently seen a rise in cases — would be added to that list. United is trying to be nimble, he said, so “if something were to open up, we can put our aircraft in the sky quickly.” At American Airlines, new routes are planned this summer from New York to Athens and Tel Aviv, and from Miami to Suriname and Tel Aviv. (Israel has announced it would allow some vaccinated tourists into the country beginning May 23.) American also announced it was restarting a number of flights to Europe. Beyond that, the company won’t speculate on where air travel will open next. Both United and American have added information to their websites to help travelers plan for international requirements. United Airlines’ Travel-Ready Center allows passengers with booked tickets to view country-specific entry requirements and schedule tests, and will soon allow customers to upload and store their vaccination records on the website before they travel. American’s online travel tool on the company’s website already allows passengers to store required documents like proof of negative coronavirus tests. One airline that has been focusing on flights between the United States and international destinations is not a U.S. carrier, but a Middle Eastern one: Emirates. The United Arab Emirates opened up to leisure and business travelers last July and Emirates is already offering direct service to Dubai from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Washington, D.C., New York and Boston. Passengers can also connect from there to other destinations in the Middle East, Africa and West Asia. The company recently announced it would resume its flight between Newark and Athens on June 1. Hotel Stays While global hotel companies are preparing for more guests, they are also keeping their focus on the health and cleaning protocols they put in place during the pandemic. Some have been adding on-site virus testing. In addition, so-called “touchless technology,” like phone apps for ordering food, will continue to be rolled out. A report by Medallia Zingle, a communications software maker, found that 77 percent of consumers surveyed said the amount of in-person interaction required at a business will factor into their decision on whether or not they visit that business. Marriott, one of the world’s largest international hotel companies, with some 7,600 hotels under 30 brands, has implemented a set of practices it calls Commitment to Clean that includes sanitizing properties with hospital-grade disinfectants, using air-purifying systems and spreading out lobby furniture to facilitate social distancing. Some properties offer free coronavirus testing. Recently the company announced a pilot program introducing self-serve check-in kiosks that create room keys and allow guests to bypass the front desk. It is also adding more “grab and go” food options. Hyatt, another major international brand, is also continuing to focus on cleanliness. Currently, it is working with the Global Biorisk Advisory Council and Cleveland Clinic to create its Global Care and Cleanliness Commitment. Those practices will “remain in place during the pandemic and beyond,” Amy Weinberg, Hyatt’s senior vice president of loyalty, brand marketing and consumer insights, wrote in an email. “With pent-up demand for travel and increased distribution of vaccines, we expect leisure travel to continue to lead the recovery, followed by increasing demand from group business and business travelers,” Ms. Weinberg wrote. The company announced at the end of March that it was reopening its Hôtel du Palais in Biarritz, France, one of its last remaining closed properties. Almost all Hyatt properties have been open since last December, and in February the company began arranging for guests staying at Hyatt resorts in Latin America who planned to travel back to the United States to get free on-site coronavirus testing. IHG’s Kimpton brand with 73 hotels in 11 countries plans on modifying its protocols this summer where it feels they are safe and local ordinances allow — for example, bringing back the manager-hosted social hour, a guest favorite. The four Kimpton hotels in Britain that closed because of the pandemic are currently scheduled to reopen by the end of May. A new Kimpton property in Bangkok that opened in October of 2020 to local guests will welcome international travelers this fall. The company also plans to open a new hotel in Bali and one in Paris later this year. “Hoteliers are chafing at the bit” to reopen and are able to do so quickly, said Robin Rossman, the managing director of the hospitality analytics company STR. The global hotel sector, though, will likely take up to two years to make a full return, he said. Tour Companies Despite the uncertainties, demand for international tours is building and like the airlines, tour companies are ramping up. Trips that emphasis the outdoors and uncrowded places are especially popular. The San Francisco-based Geographic Expeditions, which did not run any trips last summer, reported that its bookings have picked up significantly in the past few months. It plans to run 20 international trips this summer, both to familiar destinations such as the Galápagos, and some off the beaten path, including Pakistan and Namibia. There are only about 25 percent fewer guests signed up now than there were for 2019 summer trips, according to the chief executive, Brady Binstadt, and they are “spending more than before — they’re splurging on that nicer hotel suite or charter flight or special experience.” The company chose its first destinations based on entry requirements and client interest and then adjusted itineraries to avoid crowds, minimize internal flights and make sure guests had access to required testing. One expedition required flying a Covid-19 test into a safari lodge in Botswana via helicopter. A guest recently moved a Geographic Expeditions trip planned for 2022 departure forward to 2021. The company hopes this will become a trend. Abercrombie & Kent restarted its small-group and private trips last fall and early winter to places like Egypt, Costa Rica and Tanzania, and is continuing to expand choices as countries open up. “There’s been a noticeable spike in people calling who have had their first vaccine,” said Stefanie Schmudde, the vice-president of product development and operations. Bookings in March rose more than 50 percent over bookings in February, according to the company. Ms. Schmudde monitors global travel conditions intently, and can rattle off names of countries that have been open to tourists for a few months and those she expects to open soon. Counter Intuitive thinking: Using Indoor Agriculture to help REDUCE atmospheric carbon

All farming has a carbon footprint. While indoor agriculture uses a lot of electricity for artificial lighting and climate control, urban farmers are quick to point out all the food miles and on-farm emissions that most fresh produce is responsible for. The current line of thinking is therefore: who emits less? But there is another side to the debate that is rarely discussed. What about all of that carbon that could be recaptured if we let nature take back over those crop fields?

It is well known that carbon dioxide levels are rising in our atmosphere. Currently it stands at over 400 ppm and this increased carbon results in warmer ocean temperatures and fiercer hurricanes, as we have recently witnessed. 

Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria were massive storms, causing severe hardship for people in Puerto Rico, Houston, Florida and the Caribbean and likely making many of these place uninhabitable if these storms are representative of the future. Nature’s message is clear- we must do whatever we can to reduce carbon levels. If our government pretends that the problem doesn’t exist, society and industry must act on their own.

One way to reduce global carbon is by shifting cultivation of crops indoors. Yes, I know that this sounds crazy at first. How could we reduce carbon emissions by shifting the production of lettuce or strawberries indoors? After all, we will be replacing free energy given by the sun with energy intensive lights that must be powered by carbon emitting power plants.  

A different angle

We need to look at the question in a different way. We know that one of the best ways to lock up carbon is in plants, especially perennials, like trees. Trees convert CO2 into biomass and lock it up for their lifespans. Therefore, anything that we can do to lock up as much carbon as possible is beneficial.

The more permanent biomass that we can create means that more carbon is locked up. Since grassland contains much more biomass than a lettuce field, it therefore locks up much more carbon above ground.

Israeli humanitarian-aid groups are already on their way to Florida as the worst hurricane on record barrels into the state today, threatening tornados, catastrophic storm surges, strong winds and flooding, and sending over 7 million people fleeing from their homes.

Other Israeli aid teams are making their way to Mexico, which was hit by a deadly earthquake on Thursday night, and are offering aid to communities in Haiti and the Caribbean, also devastated by the powerful Hurricane Irma.

“We’ve never seen anything like this,” said Mickey Noam-Alon, from  IsraAID. “There are so many massive events going on worldwide.”

“This is rare,” added Shachar Zahavi, founder of nongovernmental aid agency iAID. “it’s really not common to have so many disasters all at one go. We are all rushing to keep up.”

“This kind of reaction from Israel is not unusual these days,” said Raphael Poch, International Media Spokesman for United Hatzalah. “Since the earthquake in Nepal in 2015, Israel has become experts in search and rescue and disaster aid.  We are a country that knows how to do this well, and we are happy to share our knowledge with the rest of the world.”

Israeli aid efforts now underway include:

Florida

Three teams of volunteers from IsraAID, ZAKA Search and Rescue Organization, and the Israel Rescue Coalition (IRC), all of whom rushed to help in the aftermath of last week’s Hurricane Harvey in Texas, are now on their way to Florida to help local people pick up the pieces after the devastating storm. Another team from IsraAID is preparing to fly from Israel to Florida.

The IRC and United Hatzalah are due to arrive in Miami today with experts in search and rescue, and medical and psychological first-aid responders.

The team consists of eight members leaving from Israel who will be joined in Florida by four people from the US who will be running logistics and organizing community response.

“Our teams have already begun assembling data and connecting with local teams on the ground in Florida as well as the Israeli consulate and getting regular updates and assessments from the ground,” said Dov Maisel, director of international operations for the IRC as well as vice president of UH.

Among the 12 team members making preparations to depart are search-and-rescue veterans who are trained for rescues on land and sea, diving teams, veteran EMS and natural disaster personnel, as well as a group of UH Psychotrauma and Crisis Response Unit members.

“We’re trying to get out in front of this as much as possible. With resources and volunteers already heavily engaged in Texas, if Irma strikes hard in Florida, people on the ground there will need as much help as they can get, and we are not hesitating to deploy and assist in any way we can,” said Maisel.

The teams from IsraAID will be involved primarily in debris removal, helping community members clean up their homes, and offering psychosocial support.

ZAKA Search and Rescue organization has also announced that it has established two command centers in Miami, manned by tens of volunteers, to offer assistance to the local communities.

The command centers are equipped with generators, sleeping bags, food and water, and relevant search, rescue and recovery equipment.  More ZAKA volunteers are standing by in the New York area.

“We intend to offer help in the best and most professional way we can, focusing on evacuation of stranded residents and treating the wounded,” said ZAKA International Rescue Unit chief officer Mati Goldstein.

Haiti and the Caribbean

IsraAID has had a team of aid workers on the ground in Haiti since the catastrophic earthquake there in January 2010. These workers have trained Haitian first responders, and have now begun distributing aid to locals in the north of the island, who have been affected by flooding from Hurricane Irma.

The organization is now planning to send volunteers from Haiti to one of the Caribbean islands worst affected by the storm. ZAKA is also considering whether to send aid to islands destroyed by the storm.

ZAKA Search and Rescue Organization volunteers, together with representatives from Israel, New York and Holland, managed to airlift Sarah Chanowitz, the wife of the Chabad emissary to St. Martin, and their five children to safety on Saturday (Rabbi Moshe Chanowitz remained to aid local residents).

The same day ZAKA also rescued a group of Jewish tourists, including medical students, from the US and Canada who were stranded on the island and seeking shelter in St. Martin’s medical school.

Mexico

iAID flew out to Mexico and the border of Guatemala on Friday following the massive 8.1 earthquake that struck the region on Thursday night, and will be assessing what long term aid to bring to the devastated region.

“We are looking at long term technological programs, such as clean water,” said Zahavi.

The quake, which hit offshore in the Pacific, sparked a tsunami warning along the coast of Central America, and caused widespread damage and destruction, killing at least 90 people.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry is also sending aid to Mexico in cooperation with the Israeli Embassy in Mexico. The aid package coincides with a previously planned visit to the Central American country by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The aid package, which has not yet been disclosed, will be delivered by Ambassador to Mexico Yoni Peled to the southern states of Oaxaca and Chiapas, which were hit the hardest by the deadly quake.

Texas

Israel responded in force when Hurricane Harvey inundated the city of Houston and its surroundings with flood water. Aid teams from IsraAID, the IRC and ZAKA sent first-aid responders to the city to help clear debris and give psychological first aid to the traumatized population. Some of these aid workers are still in Texas helping local communities. iAID also distributed solar lanterns to people left without power.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry also sent several tons of supplies and donations via its embassy in Washington, DC. This was distributed by IsraAID. The Israeli Ministry of Diaspora Affairs also sent $1m. in humanitarian aid for victims of the hurricane.

On Friday, two medical clowns from the Dream Doctors Project touched down in Houston to provide unique laughter therapy to the victims of Hurricane Harvey. The two clowns, Smadar Harpak and Penny Hanuka, will be touring Houston and Dallas for a week.

Volunteer Pilots Swoop Into Puerto Rico With Supplies and Leave With Survivors

Paul Weismann got the call for help Monday night at his home in Connecticut. By Tuesday afternoon, he was flying to Puerto Rico on his personal plane, with food, water, and power generators as his passengers.

“You fly over Puerto Rico on the way to the airport, and you see the place is wrecked,” Weismann told The Daily Beast. At night, “a few streets and highways are lit up, because of people and businesses with generators. But the rest of the island was just pitch black.”

After landing on the island destroyed by Hurricane Maria last week, Weismann reloaded his plane--this time with young children, mothers, and senior citizens--and took off for the U.S. mainland.

Weismann isn’t a professional rescue pilot though. He’s a Connecticut-based investor working with Patient Airlift Services (PALS), a network of volunteer pilots. PALS mobilized pilots from across the U.S. to help Texas, Florida, and now Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands this hurricane season.

“You name it, we’ve done it,” said Eileen Minogue, the executive director of PALS. “We literally jumped into the deep end together to provide disaster relief and it just hasn’t stopped. We’ve been working for 30 days in a row right now pretty much round the clock just trying to provide support first in Houston and now in the islands.”

Her group, which usually provides airlift relief support within the United State’s northeast region, has partnered with other nonprofits to serve hurricane-stricken regions in Texas, Florida, and now the Caribbean. Since Maria hit, PALS has sent volunteer pilots to Caribbean islands like Puerto Rico daily, bringing satellite phones, water filters, generators, tarps, hammers, and medical supplies.

Pilots flew to Puerto Rico at their own risk; the storm disabled several traffic-control radars in San Juan.

“The hurricane knocked out all their radars, and I think most of their radio communications,” Weismann said. “They have technical teams, but the roads are all blocked, and the radars are up on the mountains.”

Much of Weismann’s work has been delivering supplies to air traffic controllers, so the airport can handle more planes. But he and other PALS pilots have also worked to evacuate some people to Florida, especially young children and senior citizens. Those chosen for evacuation are vetted through FEMA or other philanthropic groups on the ground.

Bob Lambert is a pilot from Michigan and has flown rescue missions for the past 10 years. He said he recently evacuated around 20 people, including children and their chaperones, from St. Thomas after flying rescue workers to the island.

“What becomes a little difficult mentally when you evacuate people, is deciding who really needs to go first,” he said. “That’s always a tough one mentally for me… That’s the emotional drain, making sure the people are safe and doing the best you can for the people.”

Minogue said PALS expects to continue their efforts in Puerto Rico for the next four to six weeks.

“It just has escalated,” she said. “The 150 flights that we did in Harvey was a piece of cake compared to what we’re having to do in the islands.

Weismann said with increased demand has come a flood of volunteers.

“There’s hundreds of people coming out of chartered airlines,” Weismann said. “And firefighters, park service workers, forestry workers, rangers, and police. I saw a lot of FDNY there stacked up, ready to go inland and deploy. It was pretty moving to see what’s going on.”

  Steel Pan or steel drums were created in the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago in the early 1930s. The Steel Pan is a unique form of musical expression, but the origin of steel pan started centuries before in Africa. Africans brought the concepts of drumming and festival which would eventually evolve into Carnival when the Spanish and then British-ruled Trinidad & Tobago.  There was even a period in 1877 where the British government tried to ban aspects of the Carnival. They found parts of Carnival offensive including the drumming. Drumming was mainly done by instruments made out of bamboo with stamping tubes and some metal containers and some scrap metal. By the 1930s the metal instruments dominated and we began to see what we know as today as the Steel Pan aka as the Steel Drum. The cultural form began to grow among people of color on the island. Steel Pan & Carnival even became cultural manifestations that united the African and Indian populations in Trinidad & Tobago.

In the early days of the Steel Band acceptance was not across all areas of Trinidad and Tobago society.   After many evolutions, the Steel Pan Culture would, however, eventually become a national treasure, especially under the father of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Sir Eric Williams. The Steel Pan was now the source of great pride for all Trinibogians.  The instrument travelled throughout the Caribbean and Central America and eventually the rest of the world. Today Steel Pan groups can be found anywhere that Caribbean communities are heavily saturated. There is an organization that is helping to keep the culture growing right here in South Florida.

The organization is The Melo Groove Steele Orchestra Inc, a non-profit organization started through the inspiration of a Trinidadian who played Steel Band instruments since the age of 12 during the early decades of the Steel Pan Movement. The late Mr. Melville Esdelle (1939 – 1992) had come to Florida where he taught children how to play the Steel Pan instruments. The organization began operations in the city of Sunrise the 1st of January 2016, continuing that mission of Esdelle, affectionately called Melo. According to the organization “Melo Groove Steel Orchestra, Inc. strives to keep Melo’s dreams alive which are creating a safe structured outlet for young people to embrace the culture and to continue to elevate steel pan music,” a dream that includes teaching children and henceforth keeping the culture alive and growing.

Melo Groove Steele Orchestra’s general manager Bryan Heyliger shows that the Orchestra is a family, community, and cultural manifestation. At age 10 his daughter had gotten involved with the orchestra, which came about by the influence of her Trinidadian godfather. Heyliger’s wife soon followed after going to the practices, and eventually, Bryan Heyliger was brought in soon becoming general manager. His son also recently started playing Pan. According to Heyliger, “my Caribbean heritage comes from the small beautiful Island Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, whereas my wife’s heritage comes from the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. As for my daughter as the saying goes, “wherever your parents are from, that’s where you are from as well.”

Besides providing great cultural entertainment along with both mental and musical skills for youth and adults in communities throughout, the spreading of the Pan Culture is a teaching tool about the Caribbean. Heyliger accentuates this point by stating, “the views that impact one’s heritage……(are) that if we the parents fail to teach our children here in the US about our Caribbean culture we have the fear of seeing it being lost.”

Illustrating the power of family in the orchestra, Heyliger describes how he has been influenced by Esdelle, although never meeting him. “Unfortunately, I was not blessed with meeting Mr. Esdelle, however, I can definitely say that I have met him through our Grandmother (his wife) of the band, Mrs. Elaine Esdelle and I call her Ma. The passion, support, and love she displays are clearly a representation of Mr. Esdelle aka Melo”.

Within the South Florida community, the orchestra is gradually making an impact. “We have created a band with a difference. Meaning that we do not just play music for our audience, we perform for them. I have observed a strong sense of acceptance from ALL of our performances during our little over a year of being in existence. Also, we have created a family oriented environment for the children to express their talents while creating memorable milestones.” “Steel pan music has been now embraced all over the world, and, there are still platforms open to sharing this wonderful style of music. (We) make a difference by playing ALL genres.”

Existing as a Steel Pan Orchestra in the United States does have challenges. Heyliger gives us insight on this by stating, “this is a very important part of the survival of this musical art. Many bands face the challenges of practice space, funding, and exposure. If these areas can be addressed I feel that Steel Pan can be elevated at a higher rate.” The funding mainly comes from those in the orchestra’s organization, performances, food sales and donations from supporters.

Challenges there are but in a short time, this orchestra has already been able to achieve watershed moments. “One of our very huge accomplishments was placing 3rd in our first panorama competition in 2016. Melo Groove was formed in January of 2016 and played for the first time in May of 2016. So, to see how dedicated the band was to put our best foot forward for our first competition is a feeling none of us can forget. Then to have Kes himself give us props for our people arrangement was also awesome.”

The accomplishments and skills that are present with this orchestra so quickly beg the question: what will be seen in the future? “I see a Melo Groove Steel Orchestra Performing Arts Theatre. Some may say that it seems far-fetched but I know the potential of my team and it would not be impossible, just another accomplishment under our belts.”

All the above is possible because the team at Melo Groove Steel Orchestra “has created an environment that draws young people. We have also engaged musical directors that have had prior experience with teaching children. Overall, giving the young people a voice in the band and always showing them support in the band and outside of the band creates that bond.”

Heyliger credits success to the fact that “we put God first and then embrace teamwork and family values.” Currently, the orchestra is focusing on upcoming events, “we are preparing for the Houston Caribbean Festival that we were invited to take part of and after that trust me we have big plans for South Florida and even beyond. Definitely claiming the 1st place this year at Panorama. Each day and every minute Melo Groove Steel Orchestra is here to keep PAN ALIVE!”

Melo Groove consists of 15 pan players, 6 rhythm players currently.
