MBBS in Romania for Indian Students
In Romania, the MBBS program spans a duration of 6 years, referred to as MD. This aligns with the standard duration of MBBS/MD across all European universities, which is set at 6 years, owing to the prevalence of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) in the region.
Romania adheres to the ECTS framework, which is noteworthy for its provision allowing students to transfer between universities without incurring any academic loss. While such university transfers facilitated by ECTS are more feasible in countries like Georgia due to ample seats and lenient eligibility criteria, Romania presents a more stringent environment with firm eligibility criteria and a limited number of seats. Consequently, under normal circumstances, university transfers based on ECTS are not typically possible in Romania. The country takes its education protocols seriously, and the exceptional quality of education is a key factor that makes pursuing MBBS in Romania a highly favorable option for Indian students!

Romanian siblings posting
So, I think the current Romania character in Hetalia is very Transilvania. He lives in Sibiu, he has beef with Hungary and we never see him (from my memory) interacting with Turkey or Russia pre-USSR. So, Transilvania he is.
So that leaves the other 2 big parts of Romania up for nerds like me to write for. Wallachia and Moldova/Moldavia (they're Țara Românească or Valahia and Moldova in Romanian so I might switch between those names.)
Tumblr media
Wallachia, Moldavia and Transilvania are all siblings, the children between Dacia and the Roman Empire. They barely got to see their parents because they were all too young to remember them.
The three got seperated soon after, Transilvania getting kidnapped by Hungary, Wallachia constantly bickering with Turkey and Russia breathing down Moldavia's neck.
So, here are the character introductions for my little ocs of them. I actually have a lot more toughts on Wallachia than Moldavia so this is more of a Wallachia post
~Wallachia~
She's the youngest of the siblings (around 19 years old in human years).
She just wants to be left the fuck alone to plant her veggies and take care of her goats
She loves impaling things, crushing potatoes, steak, poking Turkey in the ass with her pitchfork
She has a pet goat called Esus because it's gramaticly correct
She adores cheese and anything with lactose. She refuses to believe lactose intolerance is a thing.
She can speak a shit lot of languages: Romanian, Turkish, French, English, German and Italian. In that order.
Her and Serbia have matching tatoos and they both dyed a bit of their hair blue just because
Wallachia keeps begging Serbia to join the EU because she wants to hang out in the back of the class and get drunk on medical alcohol like in the good ol' days
Serbia and Wallachia are childhood friends. Serbia actually thought Wallachia a few words in serbian and slavic (including the word for love)
Back when Turkey was the Ottoman Empire, he would constantly try to invade Wallachia
He did succeed but only a bit
They fought a lot and Wallachia was one of the brattier territories
She really did enjoy seeing the turks impaled at her border
All and all, Turkey was the closest thing Wallachia had to a father, so, inspite of their previous conflicts, Wallachia still talks with Turkey
At some point Turkey let Greece in charge of Wallachia
They got along quite well, especially since Greece would pay her to get naked
Wallachia and Greece still keep in contact and they send eachother cringe christmas and easter gifts... usually socks or cards
Once Wallachia and Moldavia joined forces together, banboozling the West by electing the same president, they played rock paper scissors and Wallachia won.
She once beat the shit out of Bulgaria, to the point that some western powers had to stop her from doing it
Never leave Wallachia in a room with Hungary. That bitch will be dead in an instant
Wallachia loves her siblings a lot but she's also a firm believer in consensual bullying
She did basicly every college under the sun at England's place before he threw her out. Now she's staying in Italy with Felicio
Her and Romania constantly try to see which one is better: Cluj Napoca or Bucharest
It's Iasi, guys, come on
Tumblr media
~Moldavia~
She's the middle child at about 20 years old in human terms
She's the scapegoat of the family
Moldova is her kid and she's a very proud mom
She makes the best alcohol in the family
She was a lot closer to Wallachia than to Romania
She's the only one of the three that still constantly goes to church
She created the ice bucket challange and she's amused by how people were using it
She's the best storyteller of them all. She just has a very sweet and homey voice.
She's dating Ukraine and they're in a loving relationship together.

Miles
(The 5 Books of the Immortals - 2015-2016)
Role: side character
Zephyr's cousin. He is a talented piano player, and has a very friendly, charismatic personality. He dies in an air raid. His mother now has to mourn both her late husband (died in WW1), and her son (died in WW2).
Vs
Cornelia
(Red Shadows - 2020-2021)
Role: main character
She is a high-school student in late 80s communist Romania. She used to build her identity on the fact that she was top of her class, but, as she ages, her sentiments change drastically, though not suddenly. She grows increasingly anti communist, culminating with her joing the revolution. She gets shot and dies from her wound by the end of that day.
Additional info
The 5 Books of the Immortals - 2015-2016
Status: completed (Romanian, typed)
Form: novel
Genre: war story, drama
Lev is a very bright chemistry student. He has the time of his life in college, making close friendships (and meeting the love of his life, Alyona), but the fairy tale is cut short with the announcement of WW2. He goes to war, but Alyona, how his wife, volunteers to join the war, just to stay with him (she's now a medic, being a medicine graduate). Lev's best friend is Zephyr, an uptight straight A student who learned to loosen up thanks to him.
The found family vibes are strong with this one. At some point they find a teen boy who was pretending to be 18 and they all but adopt him. The story has many very dramatic and heart wrenching moments, but also many heartwarming moments. For example, at the end, the boy is finally reunited with his father. It's not a very mature or that logical of a story, but it's my first "masterpiece", and I still find it very beautiful, especially the characters (they all love each other so much!!!).
(I changed the names and details for the purpose of this poll because there were some things that were just plain inaccurate or just that I changed after having finished the novel).
Vs
Red Shadows/ In Memoriam - 2020/2021 ish
Status: not yet written (some concepts)
Form: short story (collection)
Genre: historical drama, contemporary drama
Red Shadows: it's December 1989 and two high-school students, Cornelia and Sebastian, hide two very controversial things from their teacher: they are dating (him being a kind of rebellious/ failed student and her being an honours student), and, ofc, the fact that they have been getting into the anti communist resistance, and will participate in the revolution.
In Memoriam: the teacher, exactly 30 years later, strolls along the memorial of the revolution and randomly looks at the names, and faints upon recognising a specific one. She sees her whole life flash before her eyes, how she grew up, how she became so fanatically involved with the communist party, what her life became after the change of regime etc. There is a huge and shocking reveal at some point). She wakes up in the hospital, full of regret over her life choices.

How can I choose Best Country for Study MBBS ?
Indian students often want to study abroad, especially when it comes to MBBS. Fees for MBBS courses in foreign countries are lower than Indian universities.
As a result, many students apply for government institutions, but due to limited availability of seats, they have no option but to go to private institutions.
Apart from the above reasons, there are several popular factors that motivate Indian students to study MBBS abroad: foreign universities offer more seats to foreign students than domestic ones every year; the cost of studying MBBS abroad is comparable or lower compared to private universities in India; and finally, these foreign institutions are known for providing excellent facilities, highly qualified teachers and globally recognized degrees.
Those who have completed their medical studies abroad can return to India and practice provided they pass the Foreign Medical Examination (FMGE) approved by the MCI.
Various scholarships and financial aid opportunities are also available for those who wish to study abroad. In addition, overseas universities and colleges provide a safe environment that allows students to feel comfortable in an unfamiliar country.
The student must be at least 17 years old by December 31 of the year in which he wishes to enroll. They should have completed 12th standard and scored an average of 50% or more in Physics, Chemistry and Biology with English as a compulsory subject.
In addition, they have to submit an eligibility certificate issued by the Medical Council of India to get admission in foreign medical universities.
When choosing the right foreign country for further study, it is important to consider several aspects such as cost of living, tuition fees, length and structure of the course, reputation and acceptance of the school or college, culture of the nation, potential career opportunities as a result of completing the course and its value in your home country.
Best countries for Study MBBS like Bangladesh, Belarus, Canada, Caribbean, Europe, Georgia, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nepal, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Romania and Ukraine.

The Young Lords: Modern AU
Broken Truth (Tied up - hanging upside down from a tree branch): Just every good series, there is at least one Alternate Universe. Allow me to show you the AU for the Young Lords: They are the Children of the Four Lords - The Richest People in Village City in Romania. But they are still the same as their originals. Let's find out how!
Broken Truth: The Order of Wealth is the same as the order of strongest to weakest amongst the Lord: Karl Heisenberg is the richest, then Alcina Dimitrescu, Salvatore Moreau, and Donna Beneviento
Enjoy @snowflakestree
- Eliza Dimitrescu -
The Youngest Daughter of Alcina Dimitrescu - World Famous Vintner.
This girl literally lives in a freaking castle with her mother and sisters - Castle Dimitrescu; one of the last ancient landmarks that belong to Alcina's Bloodline.
While her older sisters are already working at the winery with their mother, Eliza goes to one of the most expensive colleges in Romania whose headmaster happens to be her grandmother - Miranda.
Her sisters also make sure they are the ones who drop her off but not before heading to their favorite hot chocolate place to get some before work/school.
This girl doesn't like people - mainly men - and she can smell a fake friend from miles away. She knows when someone is after her riches or her cousins' riches.
Most of her classes are with her youngest cousin Diedre Beneviento and the two of them spend most of their time together until they met up with their male cousins around lunchtime and free period.
Rich doesn't mean ignorant or stupid - she's one of the top students in her classes; seconded only by Diedre who spends most of her time studying.
The smartphone she uses isn't something you're gonna see in the shops - her phone and the phones of her cousins were made by The Lord of Mechinary and Tech - Karl Heisenberg - each one with the proper family crest engraved in silver on the back.
- Diedre Beneviento -
The Only Child of Donna Beneviento - The Famous Doll Maker and Painter. She was known for her talents in making the best paintings and dolls that almost looked alive. Thousands of people would commission her every month but while she is rich - she is the least wealthy of the 4 Lords; marking around only 15 Billion a year.
This girl is quieter than a church mouse unless she's with her cousins or she's answering a question for the teacher.
Almost always dressed in black - whether it's a black dress shirt with black pants and shoes or a black dress that covers everything but her hands and head.
Her nose always in a book - unless she was looking at something on her phone for a few seconds or talking with her cousins whenever they got around to seeing each other.
There were once a few girls that tried to make fun of her but their bodies were broken by Diedre in a fight when one of them tried to take the Beneviento Crest Hairpin from Diedre's hair - it was given to her by he mother on her last birthday and there was no way in hell she was going to give it up or let anyone take it.
Diedre also has a strange friend at school - a lonely raven that would come out of nowhere and sit on her shoulder. When her cousins asked about it, she told them the raven looked hungry and she fed it one day, and ever since then, it would just hang out with her and watch her read.
- Sebastian Moreau -
Sole Heir to Salvatore Moreau's Fortune - The doctor who made the one cure to all the major diseases; like all kinds of cancer, aids, HIV, and others - from blood o diseases to sexual diseases.
Sebastian wanted nothing more than to make his father proud of him and live up to the Moreau Family name after his mother abandoned him at his father's doorstep without so much as a goodbye.
Sebastian wanted to be independent just like his father, so he drives himself to school with a car he purchased himself
While his father is more of a medicine man, he was more interested in building things or taking things apart to understand how they work.
He was currently in the process of a special contribution to his father's research - An Bracelet with constant monitoring of the person's vital status - if they were diabetic, it would warn if an hour ahead of time if their blood sugar levels were going to drop soon.
At the moment, he was in his class for medical science while making notes about how he can incorporate this information into his own project.
He would share his thoughts with his cousins at lunch...that is if those gold diggers would let them have a moment's peace.
- Kaleb Heisenberg -
The Son of the Richest Man in Romania - Karl Heisenberg: Founder of Heisenberg Tech Incorporation, Karl's Cars, and The Four House Brewery.
Each business raking in millions of dollars in months and trillions of dollars in a year.
Kaleb was the sole heir it all and he wore that mantle with pride.
Every single day, his phone would blow up with requests from businessmen and women, asking him to court their daughters but he never listened.
Eventually - his father made him his new phone, as well as the phones of the other Heirs.
When he came to school, he rode on the loudest motorcycle his father could make for him with his jacket wrapped around his shoulders like a cape.
His cousins would groan when he arrived - he was the loudest and annoying idiot they knew.
But while he was the richest out of them - he was also very smart and dedicated to his work, never willing to slack off for even a moment.
He would aid his cousins in a way he could - like using his connections to find a rare book for Diedre, a new kind of wine recipe for Eliza's Mother, or he would give the metal pieces and chips to Sebastian; he wasn't going to charge them.
He protected and cared for family, not charge them.
It would make them grow stronger together...and he could tease them about it later.

The Message Balloon Au
Summary: (Warnings- Mentions of murder/minor character death) Romania and Norway first meet each other in an orphanage when they are kids. Romania’s parents and little brother were murdered while Romania somehow survived, but it came at price while Norway and his little brother were abandoned by their parents at the doorsteps of the orphanage. The two of them became best friends after Norway helped Romania released balloons that had written messages on them to his dead family members.
However, when Norway, with the rest of his family, are adopted by a woman from Norway, he doesn't see Romania again until he finds him releasing balloons around their college campus. The two of them catch up and fall back into the friendship that they once had when their kids and soon one of them starts to fall in love with the other.
Romania is still trying to put his past behind him, but when he finds a note left on his front doorstep, he will have no choice but to face his old nasty past on.
The man that had murdered his family is back. He wants to finished what he had started by killing the witness of his crime and he won't rest until he has Romania’s blood is on his hands.
Why are summaries so hard to write? I guess it doesn't help that I was writing this when I should have been sleeping. 😂
Anyways, I want to turn this into a multi chapter story, but my lack of confidence in my writing is not helping so we will see.
I just hope you guys enjoy the prologue or one shot of this story. ^^
Norway- Eindride
Romania- Viorel
Denmark- Mikkel
Finland- Timo
Iceland- Elvar
▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪
There he was again sitting by himself.
The weird boy with reddish brown eyes and long, brown hair was keeping to himself as he brew up balloons while writing and drawing something on those balloons with permanent marker.
The boy had been here for a week and he already caught Eindride's attention. He didn't know why, but when the boy was first brought to the orphanage, he was immediately drawn towards the boy. He wanted to be the boy's friend, but this entire week he couldn't gather the courage to go talk to him. Instead, he just sat with his small family as he just watched the other boy from the distance.
"Go talk to him," Mikkel said. "Timo, Berwald, and I will watch Elvar."
"I don't know what to day to him." Eindride admitted as he looked at his other family members. "What if he doesn't want to talk to me?"
"And what if he does?" Timo said. "Just go over there and say hi. As the grown ups say, 'you never know until you try.' Besides, even if it doesn't go to plan, you still have us."
"I don't know..."
"Come on, Ein." Mikkel playfully elbowed his arm. "Talk to him or I will drag you over there myself."
"Try it and I will steal all of your pudding cups again." Eindride threaten as he glared at him as Mikkel gasped.
"No! Not my pudding cups again!" Mikkel whined. "Do you know how long it took me to replenish my pudding stash? Hey Berwald, don't laugh! It's not funny!"
Eindride started to tune Mikkel and Berwald out as the two of them started to argue. He turned back towards the boy as he continued to watch him for a moment before deciding to listen to his family and go talk to him. "Timo, I will be back." He said.
He didn't wait for him to respond as he made his way over to the boy. He nearly lost his courage and almost turned back around to go back to his friends when the boy looked up at him and stared at him with curiosity. However, Eindride didn't stop walking until he reached the table.
"Hi," he spoke as he tried to cover up his nervousness. "Can I join you?"
Instead of answering, the boy just nodded his head and gestured for him to take a seat in the chair next to him.
Eindride took a seat as he tried to think of something else to say when the boy pulled out a notebook and wrote something in it before pushing towards him.
"I hope you don't mind if I communicate this way. I don't have my voice anymore."
Eindride looked up and was about to ask why, but the boy must have known what he was going to ask because he was unwrapping a scarf from around his neck. Once the scarf was completely off, he could see a medical bandage around his neck. "How did your neck get injured?" He asked, but immediately regretted it when the boy looked at him sadly and took his notebook back. He wrote in it and turned it back around for him to read.
"I don't want to talk about it." Eindride nodded as he watched the boy write something else down. "My name is Viorel. What is your name?"
"My name is Eindride." He said.
Viorel smiled at him before writing down his notebook again. "I like your name." It said and Eindride couldn't help to smile as well.
They both sat in comfortable silence after that and Eindride watched as Viorel went back to writing on one of the balloons. He tried to see what Viorel was writing on it, but he had it angled a certain way that he couldn't see it. "Hey Viorel, why are you writing and drawing on those balloons for?" He asked.
Viorel stopped writing on the balloon and wrote in the notebook, "I am writing a message to them."
"Them?" Eindride asked.
Viorel was hesitant to respond to him, but he did anyways. "I writing a message to my mommy, my daddy, and my little brother." The notebook said. "They live up in the sky now so I write them little messages on the balloons so it can reach them in the sky. I write them everyday and when we go outside to play, I release them into the air. Even though they don't respond back, I just hope my little messages make them happy."
After reading what Viorel wrote, he looked up at him and noticed that Viorel's eyes were watering up as he was struggling not to cry. Eindride felt uneasy seeing the younger boy cry so he leaned over and cupped both of his cheeks and kissed the top of his forehead. He usually did this for Elvar whenever he was upset or scared, but he never did this for anyone else before. He just didn't want to see Viorel cry and he just wanted to comfort him. "Don't cry," he said. "Let's just finished the balloons, okay? Do you want me to help you finished them?"
Viorel wiped his tears away and pulled away from Eindride before he wrote in his notebook again. "No, I want to finished these myself, but you can help me release them if you like..." It said. "...or you can do a balloon as well."
"No, because my mom and dad are not in the sky like yours..." Viorel seem to understand what Eindride was saying because he place his hand top of his and gave him a small smile. "...but I would like to help you release your balloons."
Viorel smiled brighter at that while showing off his cute little fang before writing, 'thank you,' in his notebook.
It wasn't long after that all the kids were gathered up and were taken outside for munch needed air.
Eindride followed Viorel out while he carried one balloon and Viorel's notebook and pen while the other boy carried the other two balloons.
Viorel had led him to a open area of the payground where none of the trees blocked the open sky. Eindride stopped walking when the other boy did and turned his head to look at him.
Eindride patiently waited for Viorel to release his balloons before he released the other. The two of them stood there as they watched all three balloons float into the clear blue sky. Neither of them didn't stop watching until they couldn't see them anymore.
Viorel took his notebook and pen from Eindride gently from him. He wrote something down in it before he turned it around for him to read.
"Thank you so much for your help. I was wondering if you would like to be friends and if you would like to play with me?"
Eindride nodded his head as he felt a smile tagging at his lips. "I would love to be your friend and play with you." He said.
Viorel's eyes lit up with excitement as he took his hand and dragged him off to play.

For all of their 63 years, twin sisters Ileana and Ioana Gheorghiu have shared just about everything. Growing up in a small city in Romania, from preschool through medical school, the best friends were never apart. “Our parents never separated us,” says Ioana, who was born first and a whole pound heavier than Ileana. “So the bond was very, very strong.”… As young girls, Ioana and Ileana both hoped to marry and have children. “Our parents were 34 and 35 when they had us,” says Ileana, “and I thought they were too old. I was going to marry young and have children.” But when that didn’t happen, they turned to the idea of adopting children together. “I was talking so much about it that my sister said, ‘Either do something about it or stop talking about it,’” recalls Ileana, wiping away tears as Ioana does the same. So in 2000, for many reasons, they made the decision to adopt two sisters, Stefania, then 5, and Valentina, then 3, from an orphanage in Romania. As they’ve raised their daughters together, a sense of humor has been key. “I’ve always told my girls that no matter how much we fight, it’s not like the usual husband and wife,” says Ileana. “We will never get divorced—that’s one good thing about being sisters.” The girls, now 24 and 22, are leading lives of their own. Stefania is pursuing a master’s degree at University of Maryland, College Park; Valentina is a senior at Dickinson College. Both bear the middle names of their moms. Says Ileana, “Because I’m a little OCD, it was my idea to give them our first names as middle names and to make their names have exactly the same number of letters in them, which meant that Valentina took Ioana’s name as her middle name and Stefania took my middle name—they both will always have a little part of us.”— From “We Are Family,” by @charmcityjane in @baltmag's February Love Issue. Most comprehensive analysis of its kind charting hypertension prevalence, diagnosis, treatment and control in 200 countries over past 30 years reveals more than half of people with hypertension, or 720 million, worldwide were untreated in 2019.
Many high-income countries, including Canada, Switzerland, the UK and Spain report all-time low prevalence levels, but in low- and middle-income and central European countries such as Paraguay, Hungary, Poland, and Croatia hypertension rates remain high.
High-income and some middle-income countries have made impressive improvements in treatment and control of hypertension including Canada, South Korea, Iceland, the USA, Costa Rica, and Germany; but there has been little change in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa and Oceania.
Authors call for best practice in detection, treatment, and control from countries like Costa Rica, Chile, Turkey, Kazakhstan and South Africa to be replicated across low- and middle-income countries.
Newswise — Over the past 30 years, the number of adults (aged 30-79 years) living with hypertension worldwide has doubled—rising from an estimated 331 million women and 317 million men in 1990, to 626 million women and 652 million men in 2019, with most of this increase occurring in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The international study, published in The Lancet, analysed blood pressure measurements from more than 100 million people taken over three decades in 184 countries.
Despite being straightforward to diagnose and relatively easy to treat with low-cost drugs, nearly half of people (41% of women and 51% of men) with hypertension worldwide in 2019 were unaware of their condition; and more than half of women (53%) and men (62%) with the condition weren’t treated. Worldwide, blood pressure was controlled (ie, medicines were effective in bringing blood pressure to normal ranges) in fewer than 1 in 4 women and 1 in 5 men with hypertension.
Large improvements in treatment and control rates seen in some middle-income countries including Costa Rica, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Brazil, Turkey, and Iran over the past three decades show that the expansion of universal health coverage and strengthening primary care have been instrumental in improving high blood pressure care and reducing the burden of this condition. With some of these countries, like Costa Rica, achieving treatment and control rates as good as, or better than, many high-income countries.
High blood pressure is directly linked to more than 8.5 million deaths worldwide each year and is the leading risk factor for stroke, ischaemic heart disease, other vascular diseases, and renal disease. Lowering blood pressure can cut the number of strokes by 35%-40%, heart attacks by 20%-25%, and heart failure by around 50% [2].
“Despite medical and pharmacological advances over decades, global progress in hypertension management has been slow, and the vast majority of people with hypertension remain untreated, with large disadvantages in low- and middle-income countries”, says Professor Majid Ezzati, Imperial College London, UK, the senior author of the study. “Our analysis has revealed good practice in diagnosing and treating hypertension not just in high-income countries but also in middle-income countries. These successes show that preventing high blood pressure and improving its detection, treatment, and control are feasible across low- and middle-income settings if international donors and national governments commit to addressing this major cause of disease and death.” [1]
He continues, “Policies that enable people in the poorest countries to access healthier foods—particularly reducing salt intake and making fruit and vegetables more affordable and accessible—alongside improving detection by expanding universal health coverage and primary care, and ensuring uninterrupted access to effective drugs, must be financed and implemented to slow the growing epidemic of high blood pressure in low- and middle-income countries.” [1]
The Non-Communicable Disease Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC) analysed data from 1,201 population-representative studies, involving 104 million people from 184 countries (covering 99% of the world’s population). The authors only used data from studies that had measured blood pressure to avoid biases in self-reported data. Hypertension was defined as having systolic blood pressure of 140 mm Hg or greater, diastolic blood pressure of 90 mm Hg or greater, or taking medication for high blood pressure.
Modelling was used to estimate prevalence of hypertension and the proportion of people with hypertension who had a previous diagnosis, who were taking medication for hypertension, and whose hypertension was controlled to below 140/90 mm Hg, by country, year, and age.
The authors note that whilst the study provides the first comparable estimates of blood pressure prevalence, diagnosis, treatment and control in adults for all countries of the world, it may be affected by a lack of data in some countries, especially in Oceania and sub-Saharan Africa.
Standstill in global prevalence While the global age-standardised prevalence of hypertension in adults has remained largely unchanged over the past 30 years—with around a third of the adult population worldwide living with hypertension in 1990 (32% women and 32% in men) and 2019 (32% women and 34% in men)—rates have dropped sharply in high-income countries (eg, Germany, Spain, Canada, Switzerland, and the UK), but have increased or remained unchanged in many LMICs, especially those in Oceania.
Canada and Peru had the lowest proportion of people living with hypertension in 2019 at around 1 in 4 (figure 2). Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, and some countries in western Europe including Switzerland, Spain, and the UK had the lowest hypertension rates in women (less than 24%), while Eritrea, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, and the Solomon Islands had the lowest rates in men (less than 25%).
At the other extreme, more than half of women had hypertension in Paraguay and Tuvalu in 2019; and over half of men in Argentina, Paraguay, Tajikistan and several countries in central and eastern Europe (ie, Hungary, Poland, Lithuania, Romania, Belarus, and Croatia).
Slow rollout of global treatment and control in poorest nations Treatment and control have improved in most countries since 1990, with particularly large improvements (of greater than 30 percentage points) seen in high-income countries like Canada, Iceland, and South Korea (where treatment levels were greater than 70%; and control rates were higher than 50% in 2019), and in several upper-middle and middle-income countries such as Costa Rica—where more than 65% of adults with hypertension were treated and nearly half had their condition controlled in 2019 (figure 4).
However, there has been little change in LMICs in sub-Saharan Africa and Oceania, Nepal, and Indonesia—where less than a quarter of women and less than a fifth of men with hypertension were being treated in 2019, and fewer than 10% had well controlled blood pressure (figure 4).
“Low detection and treatment rates that persist in the world’s poorest nations, coupled with the rising number of people who have hypertension, will shift an increasing share of the burden of vascular and kidney diseases to sub-Saharan Africa, Oceania and south Asia”, warns co-author Leanne Riley from WHO, Switzerland. “Improving the capacity of these countries to detect and treat hypertension as part of primary health care and universal health coverage must be accelerated.” [1]
Writing in a linked Comment, Dr Clara Chow from the University of Sydney, Australia, (who was not involved in the study) says, “There is an urgent need for a transformation and innovative approaches to reduce the burden of hypertension globally. We need better strategies to increase diagnosis and management, leveraging primary care or existing systems or identifying new methods to engage consumers in blood pressure management. With such vast differences in rates of prevalence, treatment, and control across countries there is a need to examine local implementation. From a medical model point of view, digital transformation such as telemonitoring, home blood pressure monitoring, text message reminders to improve adherence, and other digital health interventions to encourage healthy behaviours, or simpler medical regimens such as initial treatment with a combination therapy—such as a single pill containing ultra-low-dose quadruple combination therapy—should be considered to address barriers to blood pressure control.”
She adds, “The standstill in global prevalence and the global control rates of approximately 20% should serve as an important global wakeup call that cardiovascular disease is going to be a main burden of disease for many years to come, especially if we carry on like this.”
