His younger sister was born two years after and while he’s not the worst of brothers, he’s also not the most supportive and he would much rather be an only child. It just would be mentally less exhausting. 

After his mother was appointed as a representative, the Kubilays relocated to New York when Emir was six years old. The move was difficult for him because his English was poor and he was constantly bullied because of his accent. This, however, only pushed him to learn the language as best he could, and it was at this point that he discovered his passion for languages.

He was never really present in their lives, not because of work, but because he spent his free time getting wasted (he was so good at concealing his problem that only his family knows about his alcoholism), and when he did spend time with his family, he was a jerk.

Emir grew up spoiled, and even though his feelings for his father were rotten, he was still Aslan's golden boy and favorite. Of course, despite his resentment, Emir wasn't stupid, and he would frequently take advantage of his parents' favoritism towards him.

He began playing golf when he was four years old as a way to "bond" with his father, and going to the course is probably one of the few good memories he has with him. He considered becoming a professional golfer at first. He competed in a number of junior tournaments and was even ranked fifth in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.

Emir debuted as a professional golfer after graduating from high school, but he only stayed on the tour for about six months before deciding it wasn't the lifestyle he wanted to pursue. As it was too late to apply to university, he took a job as an intern at the news agency where his father worked but he hated every second of it.

While his grades were not the worst, they were not good enough to get him into an Ivy League on his own. However, his parents wanted the best of the best for their son and they made a generous donation to Ogden and magically he was accepted.

However, his father’s liver was in such a bad shape that he required a transplant. As awful as it sounds, Emir turned down being the donor but after his mother begged him, he donated part of his liver to him. He masked his absence by claiming he had appendix surgery. 

At Ogden, he is an active member of some clubs and he is the soccer captain but he often tends to neglect the academic part of it. He does well in exams but his grades are not as good as they could be because he makes the minimum effort. He has no idea what he’s going to do after graduation, maybe start a masters just for the sake of not getting a real job.

Greer Morrison was that girl, his first friend in a new foreign country. He was six years old, a few months older than her, and despite his broken English he managed to win Greer’s coveted friendship. Emir, despite his short age, noticed how everyone desired to be near her, to bask in her light. It's unclear how he got her attention; perhaps it was her youth's naivety that prevented her from seeing all of his flaws, whatever it had been he was determined to keep it. It would have been so easy to fall into the banality of the childhood friend who ends up falling in love with someone as perfect as Greer but beyond some teen infatuation boosted by hormones, Emir never felt anything more than friendship for her. Their friendship was an atypical one, they stopped being each other’s best friend as they grew older and met people more akin to them. However, once in a while, he would hear a knock on his window and they would end up talking all night only to not speak again for weeks. They would mostly hang out during the summers, their summer houses also being next to each other. Those weeks in the Hamptons always felt like going back in time and they were kids again. Around Greer, Emir allowed himself to be more childish, adventurous which was always refreshing. College was a way to bring them back together, they would run into each other often and end up reminiscing of old times while also catching up. By the time Greer disappeared, they were spending more time together, texting and rekindling the friendship they both had neglected years before.

Perhaps his life would have turned much different, perhaps he would have turned up to be the better version of himself (the one he pretends to be) if they had never joined the New York elite. It's not that Emir enjoys not being the nicest or the most humble, but karma has avoided him long enough to convince him that he is the exception to the rule: there are no consequences to his actions, and even if there were, he is so used to not dealing with the repercussions that he doesn't care. But too many concessions allowed resentment to grow in him; he holds grudges and can be retaliatory at times. Nonetheless, Emir has worked to conceal this part of him and he can play either play the part of the most starry-eyed idealist or the bitterest of cynics.
