Don't be a baby "birdnapper!" When a baby bird leaves the nest they spend a period of time on the ground before they are fully flighted. This is normal and natural. The parents will continue to provide care and food to fledges on the ground. Please don't intervene! This chart can help with determining the status of fledgling birds.

personally i just saved his bird from birdnappers and got free boat fare for life
...Is that a bird? I genuinely had never seen one before I arrived here.
<Zzt, yeah? Wow this is oblivious even for you, zzt.>
Whatever the case, I'm not about to orchestrate a Pokenapping just to get free boat trips. I'll pay the ferryman fair and square. I'm not about to try and exploit an old man to save a few coin.
Charon didn't exactly appreciate attempts to swindle him either.

It's been a rough month for Tuffy.
He was kidnapped from his parents and watched his abductive foster father eviscerate his sibling. In recent days, his humongous stepsister seems hellbent on pecking out all his feathers and making him scream.
Tuffy is a baby red-tailed hawk who was stolen from his nest by a bald eagle on May 20. He now lives with the regal looking kidnapper, her mate and their biological offspring, Lola, in a Bay Area forest. By all accounts, his foster parents are bringing him food, and he's growing quickly. Just this past week, he took a few successful flights away from — and back to — the birdnappers' aerie.
The avian drama has been playing out before a bevy of astonished birdwatchers, who describe bald eagles and red-tailed hawks as "mortal enemies." Armed with high-powered binoculars and long camera lenses, the birders insist the circumstances are exceedingly rare. The phenomenon has only been recorded in the wild four other times.
No one is entirely sure what is going on or why it happened, but several experts said the female eagle was probably getting food for her eaglet when she grabbed the red-tailed chick. Once the chick was in her nest and squawking, she probably got confused.
"I have read a few reports of similar 'adoptions' and the researchers have always concluded that the nestling hawk was delivered as prey, but was still alive," said Cheryl Dykstra, a raptor researcher and editor of the Journal of Raptor Research. "The parent eagles then began to feed the nestling as if it were their own."

Theme Bestiary: The Phoenix
Tumblr media
CR 15
Neutral Good Gargantuan Magical Beast
Pathfinder Bestiary 1, pg. 227
We’re getting into the Big Leagues now, and here to escort us into them is the immortal Phoenix! The massive, flaming birds are extremely hard to put down once they gets up to fight, their regenerative powers only suppressed by cold or evil damage. And, of course, if you DO manage to kill one... It’s a Phoenix. It comes back. You saw it coming, we saw it coming, everyone saw it coming. Everybody knows what a Phoenix does, both out of universe and in it. A burst of fire 1d4 rounds later and it emerges from its own ashen corpse, good as new!
Once a year.
... Yeah. As it turns out, the Phoenix of Pathfinder aren’t exactly as resilient as some of their fantasy counterparts, not that 210 HP, Regeneration 10, DR 15/evil, and a pile of at-will healing spells is exactly easy to burn through in the first place. If your party is primarily good-aligned, you might not even be able to get through a Phoenix’s damage reduction before its flaming talons and beak shear through you. It’s a good thing, then, that Phoenixes themselves aren’t the antagonistic type; they are largely peaceful, long-lived scholars who freely share their knowledge with anyone that seeks them out, and would never willingly battle with a good-aligned being.
However, a Phoenix can make an excellent ally for a good-aligned party, as the birds will shed their peaceful nature if they encounter a great evil. Their ability to use Wall of Fire at will and Fire Storm 3 times a day can shape a chaotic battlefield in the favor of its allies, and the massive birds themselves will dive into combat with even demon princes and archdevils if they think they can make a difference. Despite their weakness to evil-aligned weapons, they would gladly throw (both of) their lives on the line if it meant that innocent mortals would live. Of course, this also means that they can end up in trouble quite a lot; a rescue mission to save a Phoenix makes for a perfect adventure for mid-level parties, gaining an immensely powerful ally once their mission completes to have a very cathartic battle against the birdnapper.
You can read more about these allies of good here.

Blue Winter January 21, 2017
This one came out verrrry different form Bob's. I used paper again because I have a ton of it and it's cheaper than canvas, but I woefully underestimated the spacing and size of everything compared to Bob's. His mountains take up the entire width, and are about twice as tall. And those itty bitty trees I made are really THERE in his version. The episode was ending and I realized that half of the paper was still empty so I just filled it with snow. "Snow." I thought about putting some of Bob's huge trees up in there, but I was once advised to not be afraid of negative space, so I left it empty. Bob only used 3 colors in this one - black, white, and Prussian blue. Where do these paint names come from? I used a ton of the slo-dri blending liquid, I generally just pour it over everything and it works out ok. My skies just can't be as bright as Bob's it seems.
Bob opens this episode with a tiny bird perched on his finger. It pecks at his ring, and then he places it down like the unearthly angel he is. Bob also tells a story in this episode about how he raised baby birds as a child. Cute, right? But then he mentioned how he would literally steal a baby bird out of a nest and bring it home and tell his mom he found it stranded in the street somewhere. And then he would raise the bird and release it, which is all nice and everything but honestly, Bob! Stealing baby birds?! Bob the birdnapper has shown his face and now I'm just not sure about his adorable animal kingdom.
Bob's Wisdom: (on helping bird sanctuaries, or "bird ladies" as Bob says.) If you have time, give them a hand. They'll appreciate it.

Again, taking baby birds into captivity should ALWAYS be a LAST RESORT! It is normal and natural for a baby to be on the ground for a few days after fledging and leaving the nest. Please allow the parents to finish the job of raising their young and DON'T be a birdnapper!

Lots and lots of calls about fledglings this weekend! It is normal and natural for feathered baby birds to be on the ground this time of year. Please allow them the space they need to finish being raised by their parents! Don't be a baby "birdnapper!" Taking young birds into captivity should ALWAYS be a last resort!
