So I finally got to visit Bokor National Park and the remains of the old French outpost there. I became stranded in Cambodia a few months back, due mostly to the need to leave Vietnam for a visa run. It was oppressively hot in Phnom Penh, and once I'd received word I wouldn't be able to pick up my visa for at least an extra week, I decided to head down to Kampot for a few days. I met some great folks down there- expats from the UK, France, a few Aussie characters. They said I should go up Bokor Mountain and take a look- it turned into one of the best solo travel days of my life. I hired a 125cc Airblade and took the 90-minute trip. The temperature drops 10 degrees as you climb the hill, and there's a bunch of monkey troops along the way. I was given a few kilos of over-ripe mangoes to feed them by one of the French expats I met. At the top the old French Casino wasn't the eerie ruins it once was- It's had a makeover and now is back in business (sort of- basically empty as far as I could tell- a few rich families playing on the front lawn). Two other massive Chinese-built gambling houses seemed completely abandoned. Good. I got to explore the old French church, and many other old out-buildings were still there, but access to them was blocked for some reason. That was annoying. Anyways, I cruised around the top of the hill and found plenty to shoot with my beloved Lucy Lumix. We had a great day out together.

ENTERING CAMBODIA'S BOKOR NATIONAL PARK

As we made our way up the grand Elephant Mountains it wasn't until we set eyes on the huge 90 feet tall Lok Yeay Mao statue that we realized the monstrosity Bokor National Park is.

Lok Yeay Mao is known as Grandma Mao, a mythical heroine and divinity of Cambodia's form of Buddhism and Brahmanism that looks out to the sea for her lost warrior husband, protecting travelers and hunters, and keeping peace and calm in the forest and coastal provinces.

It isn't a complete visit without checking out the hideously yellow Thansur Bokor Highland Resort. Its awfully bright aesthetics and overcompensating architecture feels out of place among the historical relics such as the Old Catholic Church.

Built by the French in the early '20s, the church remains structurally sound, remaining open to the curiosity of stragglers and visitors.

The infamous Bokor Hill Station is the highlight of the visit.

Built upon a towering cliff overlooking Kampot and the Gulf of Thailand, the building is intriguing and eerie, with a view from the top that is absolutely breathtaking.

As with most of the park, the sites are scarce with visitors.

Being so, the nearly silent halls fill only with the echoes of our footsteps. The howling wind passing through the hollow enormity seems fitting for a horror film but the mystery and fascination of the building is so entrancing. 

While blankets of fog and the sun's ray constantly battle for supremacy of the land, it's difficult not to be in awe of the surroundings at all times.

From the top floor of the Bokor Hill Station looking south, the sight is heartstopping.

As we came upon the evening we also saw an increase in visitors. 

Here we look north, deep into Bokor National Park and the Elephant Mountains. In front is a strip of vendors selling beverages and fresh coconuts.

Today was only a tiny glimpse of Cambodia's history of foreign occupancy. Much of what remains are the subtle and not so subtle ripples. The relics and stories of the vast Bokor National Park will take more than a day's visit to comprehend. The history and culture are well worth a patient dig if you are to understand the bigger scope of Southeast Asia.

For our sunset, return drive we opt to take a scenic detour passing through infamous Cambodia salt fields and fishing communities.

With the sun setting over the Elephant Mountains, hues of purple, orange and blue painted the sky.

Nothing could be more picturesque. 

Nothing could be more perfect.

 Nothing except, soup.

And sweets.

With mind, heart and soul filled to the brim, the body as well, it was then that we knew it was time to call it quits for the day.

Cambodian History (Part 29): The Bokor and Bardez Affairs

But the belle époque was not good for the Khmer peasants.  The French Résidents allowed the police to use brutal methods against the native populations.  They also increased taxes sharply, to make up for the concessions granted after the 1916 Affair.

The French authorities encouraged Vietnamese immigration, to provide indentured labour for construction projects and the plantations.  Living and working conditions on the plantations were often terrible.  There were often strikes and mass desertions, and the Khmers, on the whole, shunned plantation work.

The Bokor HIll Station

After WW1, Baudoin decided to build a French pleasure palace, on a mountain behind Kampot, overlooking the Gulf of Siam.  It would rival the British efforts at Poona.  It would have a grand hotel and casino, tennis courts, gardens and paths.  The altitude was over 1km, and European fruits & vegetables thrived this high.  Baudoin ordered a special bungalow to be built for him within the complex.

A huge amount of state revenue was used for the project.  Saigon’s radical press protested, calling Baudoin the “tyrant of Cambodia”.

Untold numbers of Khmers died for Baudoin’s excesses.  The construction of the road, winding up through the jungle-clad mountains, was the worst.  The French Saigon press claimed that 900-2000 Khmers had died on the construction, but numbers are uncertain.

The Bardez Affair

Taxes rose again during the 1920′s, causing widespread discontent.  In 1925, Baudoin sent the trouble-shooter Félix Louis Bardez to the Kraang Leav village (Kompong Chhnang district) to investigate complaints of excessive taxation.

Bardez was a former decorated NCO, and known to be lacking in tact.  He summoned the villagers, and harangued them insultingly for a very long time, via his interpreter.  Later, in the afternoon after they’d drunk palm wine, the villagers battered Bardez, the interpreter, and a Khmer militiaman to death.

The authorities claimed that the murders weren’t political, but European dissidents in Saigon turned the murder trials into an attack on the Baudoin administration.

Nonetheless, the assassination of Bardez was the first obviously political murder of a French officials for years - in fact, it was the last until the last days of the French Protectorate, after WW2.  Discontent was usually taken out on Chinese or Vietnamese minorities, or by banditry.  Anti-Vietnamese sentiments have been a major part of Cambodian nationalism from the 1930′s until today.
