Now 5 years old, Jessica Marie, whose middle name is the same as her mothers, is the light in her daddy’s life. More rapid fire questions, more rapid fire answers.

Do you think EA's decision to push against following the interpretation of Belgium's law by the Belgian Gaming Commission regarding loot boxes is a good idea? Like, is it even a market big enough for them to bother? Do you think they might be fearing the precedent that Belgium could potentially set?

My conjecture is that EA’s legal team has found a reasonable legal defense that they felt was a better course of action than complying with the law. I predict it will go to court, there will be stuff hashed out, and either the Belgian government will have to change the law, or EA will have to comply (or stop selling in the countries where it is banned). The chances of anybody actually going to jail is nil.

Why (or why do you think) didn't Marvel's Spider-Man release with the symbiote suit as one of their 26 or so available costumes?

It’s almost certainly licensing issues with Marvel. Insomniac probably couldn’t secure permission to do the symbiote costume, possibly because the exclusive rights were sold to another developer already (perhaps for a Venom tie-in game).

Hi there, you've mentioned before that Game Devs could be making more by taking up work in other related fields, how much of a difference is said paycheck as a Game Dev and a different occupation in a related field? That said, are Game Devs paid a set amount without any guarantees of bonuses even if a game's sales exceeds expectations.

It depends on what the field is. I know a senior programmer who left the EA studio I was working for at the time to roughly triple his salary by going to work on slot machines.

I'm asking this since you mentioned LinkedIn in your headhunter post: How important is linkedIn to get a job at a studio?

If you want to be a professional in the industry, you should definitely have one that you keep updated. I’ve made a lot of industry contacts and gotten a lot of job opportunities from recruiters reaching out to me via LinkedIn. I don’t follow up on all of them, but they are definitely there.

When doing these live service games, how do devs decide how much whatever skin they are selling will be charged?

It’s set by partially by market research and partially by trial and error. If the company has never sold a skin before, it’s probably experimental - they try a price and adjust it if it doesn’t work. Most of the time, the leadership crunches numbers from surveys, past player spending behavior, other games’ financials, competitors’ prices, etc. to figure out where they should price things. There’s going to be some number X players that are willing to pay Y for a skin, and we want to maximize the X * Y value, so we just have to figure out what the best Y is. There is a caveat to this as well - we can’t raise the price once we release the content since that has a large depressive effect on sales even if players would have been willing to pay the higher price.

Was Modern Warfare Remaster being held hostage by preordering Infinite Warfare a toxic business practice? They stated it could only be purchased by preordering Infinite Warfare and would never be standalone, but eventually did become standalone.

Timed exclusives are not a new thing to any publisher. Anything a publisher says is probably good for about a year at most.

“I’m finally going to have to change my banner”. More seriously, I think it’s interesting that somebody at Capcom is finally willing to take on the IP after Inafune’s departure and the failure of Mighty No. 9. Capcom hasn’t been doing so well in the financial department - they just shut down their Vancouver studio and are going to take an estimated ~$30 million loss from closing down the projects in development there. They really need a win that isn’t Monster Hunter and I hope that Mega Man can do it for them.

You said "Changing engines is almost never easy." Why the "almost"? Is there ever an easy transition between different game engines?

It’s the exceedingly rare case where three major requirements happen to intersect:

The old engine is old and has way too many accumulated dependencies that make it extremely difficult to add new things without breaking old ones

The new engine is super easy to use out of the box and does everything you need it to without introducing any major issues or hiccups of its own

You are starting clean and don’t have to meet established scope expectations from franchise players

As you might guess, these three situations intersecting don’t happen very often.

A/N: A huge “thank you” to the incredible prompt goddess, @shy2shot. My motivation sunk to a new low and I couldn’t see my way out. So, I sent her a message for a daddy Bucky prompt. From her recommendation, this fic came to life. @rebelicious THANK YOU for helping me. ILY! Thank you for reading and comments are always welcome!!!

Their number one client, Stark and Wilson Land Developing, is in the process of adding a new wing to the Brain and Cancer Research Center at Mt. Sinai’s Children’s Hospital. This project is special to Bucky. His wife, Lillian, died from a brain aneurysm, caused by cancer 3 years ago, leaving behind an adorable daughter with rich brown hair like Bucky and hypnotic amber eyes identical to Lillian’s.

Now 5 years old, Jessica Marie, whose middle name is the same as her mothers, is the light in her daddy’s life. After his wife’s death, Bucky retreated into depression and couldn’t care for Jess properly. Her grandparents stepped in and assisted him. Steve’s position within the company escalated from COO to CEO. Bucky was kept abreast of all dealings and chimed in when needed.

On Jess’ 4th birthday, she and her daddy hopped on a plane and headed to Maui for some much needed alone time. Bucky brought photos and videos of Lillian, for Jess to watch. She only had flickers of her mommy’s memory. Bucky wanted her mother to be more than a fleeting memory.

Page after page of a photo album held heartwarming memories. As best he could, Bucky explained to Jess where her mommy was.

“Daddy, don’t be sad. Mommy is in Heaven. She can see us, just look up.”

Indulging his daughter, Bucky turned his gaze towards the cloudless sky. “Mommy told me to smile and take care of you.” Wrapping her chubby arms around his neck, for the first time, Bucky openly wept in front of Jess.

“Thank you Jess. I love you so much and Mommy is proud of you too. From now on, I’ll spend more time with you, I promise. We’ll go to the park, eat ice cream and play dress up!”

Jumping from Bucky��s lap, Jess danced around the room singing and clapping. She’d been feeling like he didn’t love her anymore. All the little one needed was a constant in her life: her daddy Bucky.

When they returned home, Bucky held a meeting with all staff members present. He unveiled the plans for “The Lillian Marie Barnes Child Care” center. As you could imagine, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room, including Bucky’s. The best part, there’s no cost to the family!!! From 1 to 5 years old, employees could visit the daycare center and have lunch with their son or daughter. Moral soared 500%.

BRILLIANT IDEA

WIth the Howard and Maria Stark Children’s Wing on schedule, Peter Parker, Director of Marketing, pitched an idea to Bucky.

Gathered in the spacious conference room were Bucky, Steve, and Peter. Bucky’s executive assistants Wanda and Natalia. Also, Steve’s executive assistants, Maria and Pietro were in attendance as well.

Peter began the impromptu meeting. “Thanks everyone for coming. An idea, brought to my attention by Pepper, peaked my interest. She suggested the “Bring Your Kid To Work Day.” A chorus of yes, oooo’s and ahh’s echoed around the cherrywood table.

Wanda interjected, “Wow, Peter I love the idea. Jess would be the Jr. CEO and Steve’s son, Malachi as COO.”

Maria Hill cooed, “That’s a wonderful idea, Peter! What do you think?” she asked before looking towards Bucky and Steve.

Bucky nodded, “The kids would get a kick out of being Jr. Executives for a day. How about this Saturday? We’d shut the phone system down for a few hours and route all calls to the answering service.”

“Looks like the Rogers family’s going shopping this evening.” Steve beamed with pride.

Peter’s eyes gleamed. “Yes! The kids will have so much fun.”

Bucky asked Wanda to send out a company-wide email informing everyone about Saturday. The replies were overwhelming.

DRESSED FOR SUCCESS

Jessica ran to her daddy’s arms. “Hi sweetheart. How’s my girl?”

“I’m fine daddy. We had a good day in class. I said my ABC’S and numbers.”

“What? My goodness you’re smart!” Bucky kissed her cheek, nose and forehead. “How would you like to come to work with daddy on Saturday? You and the rest of the kids will run the company for the day!! How does that sound?”

Unable to contain her enthusiasm, Jess sang, “♪♫I’m the boss, I’m the boss♫♪”

Bucky reminded Jessica, “It’s important to treat your staff members kindly.”

“Okay daddy, I’ll be good.”

“That’s my big girl. Now, time to go shopping for a power suit, briefcase and shoes.”

TIME FOR WORK

Decked out in her suit with her briefcase and phone, Jessica Marie Barnes, CEO, reported for work. Already in boss mode, she greeted her “staff.” “Good morning everyone,” she said confidently.

Cameras clicked as the kids, dressed in business suits and dresses, laughed along with their parents.

Natasha’s daughter, Sage, donned a navy blue pantsuit, white blouse and blue tie. Malachi Grant sported a gray 3 piece suit, powder blue shirt, and striped tie. Other kids wore dresses or snazzy shirts and pants.

Wanda, Sam and Scott gushed over the kids. “Scottie, Mason and Jason are the cutest.” “Thanks Wanda. Thomas is quite handsome as well.”

Parents and kids alike assembled in the lobby. There were about 15 little ones; ages varied from 3 to 5. How much trouble could they get in right?

Bucky addressed the room. “I must admit, this is the best dressed staff in all of New York. Now kids, there’s cookies, fruit and juice boxes in the small conference room. Jessica, you have the floor.”

“Thank you Mr. Barnes,” Jess said. “Good morning. My name is Jessica Barnes but you can call me Jess. It’s time for our morning meeting. Follow me to the small room.”

Everyone applauded as Jess led her friends in for snacks.

Malachi instructed the “staff” to eat while he and Jessica spoke. “Okay, folks. We have a lot of work to do. There’s a meeting with people who want something built.”

One little lady asked, “Mr. Drant, who?” Malachi replied, “I dunno let’s make something up.”

BIG MISTAKE

Now, whoever decided to furnish snacks, didn’t take in consideration that pastries, fruit and juice boxes contained copious amounts of SUGAR! 3, 4 and 5 year olds hyped up on sugar makes for serious hijinx.

Next, a group of 3 year olds snuck into a few offices with sticky hands, pressing on the keyboards. Yep, they made a mess.

Not to be left out, Jessica and the gang visited the employee break room. The refrigerator and lower cabinets were raided, devouring sandwiches, chips, Christmas candy, and cookies leftover from an office meeting.

Smeared on the pristine white walls were tiny chocolate handprints, water and orange juice got spilled onto the floor, and a few kids ate too much and threw up. The room was an absolute MESS.

Mason and Jason tried to clean up the vomit by throwing paper towels over the 2 spots. Needless to say, they used an entire roll! Malachi retrieved a mop from the custodian’s closet and attempted to mop the liquid mess from the floor.

Instead of cleaning it up, he slipped, face first, soiling his new suit. Jessica, completely flustered, plopped on the floor in tears.

Checking the conference room, Bucky was alarmed. No kids in sight. Frantic, everyone split up searching for them.

Wanda, Sam, Scott and a handful of parents landed in the break room. Surveying the damage.

Nat gasped, “What the-?” Bucky shook his head. “This is our fault. Unattended kids equals a recipe for disaster. I’ll call the cleaning company.”

Pictures were taken and sleeping little ones snuggled in their parents arms.

Bucky and Steve stood in awe of their Jr. CEO and COO. “Buck, what a mess. Guess I’ll take Malachi home” “Yep!! Jessica’s reign is over.”

The “Bring Your Kids To Work” disaster was a bit hit, for the children. The time had come to clean up and prepare for Monday morning. Hope was that the computer keyboards are cleaned, along with the delightful “copies.” Someone’s in for a major surprise! Jessica Marie Barnes will remember the day forever. She was the “CEO” of her daddy’s architecture firm. In Heaven, Lillian Marie Barnes was their Guardian Angel.

The pandemic has driven significant digital transformation efforts among enterprises looking to adapt to the new normal and effectively support growing remote workforces. As a result, SaaS platforms and services have become critical for business success. Unfortunately, with this growth, organizations and employees are becoming more prominent targets for ransomware. In fact, according to a recent report, ransomware attacks increased by 150 percent in 2020. As this threat continues to evolve, businesses are increasingly facing what’s referred to as cloud ransomware – a new generation of attack that explicitly spreads through the cloud and encrypts SaaS data associated with cloud services.

Ransomware has gotten so pervasive that, according to Cybersecurity Ventures, it’s estimated the cost of ransomware will top $20 billion in 2021. These costs include a wide range of variables, including ransom fees, forensics, legal work, fines and penalties, data recovery requirements and more. The costs are rising, and unfortunately, so is the volume of effective ransomware attacks. In fact, in 2020, 73 percent of ransomware attacks were successful, which was an increase of 600 percent over the previous year. And every 11 seconds, a new organization falls victim to ransomware, according to Cybersecurity Ventures. Today average downtime from a ransomware attack is 16 days. And as an example, healthcare organizations pay out more than $8,851 per minute of downtime. The reality is that ransomware has become a multibillion-dollar industry for cybercriminals. Like any other successful business, ransomware schemes want to show positive revenue traction year over year.

But what exactly are criminals targeting with these attacks and why? First, cybercriminals are looking for new market opportunities. Many offline businesses remain closed due to Covid-19, which has somewhat narrowed the traditional “playing field” for cybercriminals. As a result, they’ve increased their focus and efforts toward phishing attacks to compensate. Last year alone, more than 75 percent of organizations worldwide experienced some sort of phishing attack. During this same period, as the global pandemic forced organizations to transform business operations, cloud services and applications have become even more mission-critical for businesses. The data shows just how significant a cloud has become. According to Synergy Research Group, worldwide spending on cloud infrastructure services increased by 35 percent year over year, and Flexera’s State of the Cloud Report shows that most companies spend more than $1M a year on cloud services. In addition, companies are now fully committed to using services such as Google Workspace, Microsoft Office 365, Salesforce, Dropbox and Box, to name a few. This culmination of critical cloud service adoption and phishing attacks is creating a perfect security storm.

Securing data in the cloud As cloud services accumulate vast numbers of users in a single ecosystem, they become prime targets for criminals. Just imagine the damage a well-designed ransomware attack can inflict on a large segment of enterprises that all use Microsoft Teams or Salesforce. The economic impact has the potential to be devastating. And protecting against ransomware is becoming more and more challenging as cybercriminals release increasingly sophisticated algorithms each year. For example, new ransomware attacks block on-premises antiviruses and backup agents, delete backed-up data, and download sensitive information. They steal a victim’s saved credentials from web browsers and email clients (and threaten to upload it to public view if the victim doesn't pay the ransom), and more.

Here’s a simple cloud-to-cloud example of a ransomware attack targeting SaaS data. First, a user gets an email that appears to be from their cloud service provider. It requires the user to click a phishing link to update an application. Second, a user installs a malicious OAuth app or a Chrome extension that requests a scope of permissions to access Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 SaaS data. Third, once permissions are granted, the app starts encrypting data directly in the cloud.

The bad news is that there’s no miracle solution that can help you to keep your business data 100 percent secure in the cloud. But the good news is that a combination of best practices can help you significantly reduce the impact of a ransomware attack on your organization.

You need to continually (24/7) monitor your SaaS environment using a third-party provider. The provider can identify new ransomware attacks in real-time, remediate them, alert you immediately and provide an advanced incident response plan. One of the critical components of such a solution should be machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms that can minimize false-positive rates and automate the process to reduce the human factor significantly.

Data backup Data backup is incredibly important as well. Use an independent cloud-to-cloud backup provider to back up your sensitive SaaS data to secure cloud storage. AWS, GCP and Azure are the most secure and trusted cloud storage services. Daily backup is a vital part of this process.

Since the majority of phishing emails represent the first stage of a ransomware attack, you need to protect yourself with an anti-phishing monitoring solution.

Additionally, you must monitor and assess all third-party apps your employees install. This includes marketplace apps, Chrome extensions, add-ons, iOS apps, Android apps, non-marketplace apps and any others that have access to your SaaS data. Some apps can be time bombs designed to launch ransomware attacks when you least expect it!

And finally, you should be educating your employees by implementing security awareness training on a quarterly basis. There are many online tools that can help you with this. Continue doing all the necessary data security work like managing files’ permissions and access, outlining clear security policies and more.

At the end of the day, you need to evolve along with the changing ransomware landscape. In the past, cybercriminals have either broadly targeted every end user in hopes of receiving a small payment, or focused in on a single approach that used social engineering tactics targeted at specific organizations that are more likely to pay a higher ransom. That’s no longer the case now that we’ve entered the cloud ransomware era. The mass adoption of cloud services by a broad range of business sectors has created an attractive aggregation point for both approaches. And they’re successful because cloud providers have lagged when it comes to addressing security concerns. Don’t let your organization be the next victim. Use the information above to close potential security gaps and shut out cloud ransomware before it’s too late.

Ransomware is a widespread threat to organisations across all sectors in 2021. According to The State of Ransomware 2021 report by Sophos, 37 per cent of organisations around the world were hit by ransomware in 2020 and the average cost of recovery from such an attack has more than doubled, from $0.76m in 2019 to $1.85m in 2020.

The average ransom paid was $170,404 – and almost a third of victims paid up. In addition to the significant financial cost and resource demands of recovering from an attack, ransomware can destroy brands and reputations, especially when personal data and other confidential information is involved. The annual Sophos survey, which polled 5,400 IT decision makers in 30 countries around the world, (mainly from mid-sized organisations) shows how not all industry sectors have been impacted as adversely by ransomware attacks.

Media, leisure and entertainment along with distribution and transport topped the list of sectors able to block an attack before their data was encrypted – with 47 per cent and 48 per cent, respectively, able to do so, compared to a global average of 39 per cent. In local government, which can have limited IT resources, only 28 per cent managed to avoid encryption, while healthcare (28 per cent) and oil and energy (25 per cent) also struggled.

The threat landscape for ransomware is changing. At one end of the spectrum there are unskilled criminals using off-the-peg ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) software, such as Dharma, in a spray-and-pray approach. At the other end there are advanced, targeted and manually orchestrated attacks that involve innovative tactics, techniques and procedures as well as tools that are often also used by IT administrators and security professionals for everyday tasks. These advanced attacks involve the highest ransom demands, often running into millions of dollars. In addition, such attacks can combine encryption with the theft of data, which the attackers then threaten to make public unless a ransom is paid.

Some adversaries are skipping the data encryption stage altogether and are simply demanding a ransom to delete, or agree not to publish, the stolen data. A small, but significant 7 per cent of respondents to the global survey had experienced such attacks – double the 3 per cent affected in 2019. Anecdotal evidence suggests that central government and retail organisations may be particularly vulnerable to this kind of approach.

Does it pay to pay a ransom? The universal answer is no, but not everyone feels they have a choice. If you don’t have up-to-date offline backups, a decryption key provided by the attackers may be the only way of getting your data back. But it is rarely that simple. The survey found that of the organisations that pay a ransom, fewer than one in ten (8 per cent) get all their data back, while 29 per cent recovered no more than half.

Chester Wisniewski, principal research scientist at Sophos, says: “This could be in part because using decryption keys to recover information can be complicated. What’s more, there’s no guarantee of success. For instance, as we saw recently with DearCry and Black Kingdom ransomware, attacks launched with low-quality or hastily compiled code and techniques make data recovery difficult.”

Some attackers remain in the victim’s network after launching the ransomware, to see if the attack succeeded, but also so that they can threaten a repeat attack if the victim doesn’t pay. Identifying and removing any trace of the intruders is vital to prevent this from happening.

What did the survey respondents expect from ransomware in the future? Of the 62 per cent of organisations that had not been hit by ransomware in the past year, nearly three-quarters expect to be targeted at some point. Around half of them (47 per cent) said this was because of the increased sophistication of attacks. The good news is that 6 per cent of those that had escaped attack – and felt they were unlikely to be a target in the future – said this was down to the expertise of their IT teams.
