Gonna preface this with: tumblr discourse isn't real and can't hurt you...
Here's some two-cents on the stupid goth/punk as a music-based subculture discourse coming from someone who's clocked about a decade in a DIY scene, along with some info for those actually genuinely interested in pursuing a relationship with your local scene rather than arguing about things you have no knowledge of online. Your local scene is always looking for new people!
I'm not presenting myself as an expert here but I'm pretty knowledgeable due to my time involved. Under the cut I've got a rundown on how easy it is to break into your local scene instead of arguing online.
THE REALITY IS:
Preface: I don't want to discourage people and this isn't gatekeeping! Join your scene! A lot of these scenes are actually dying due to commodification and gentrification and they're always looking for new people! I have pals in hardcore bands who actually LOVE seeing tiktok kids at shows because there's a new generation of people interested!
One thing you'll discover if you become involved in your local scene is that it's most often entirely DIY based! Everyone is welcome and venues go out of their way to be accessible to everyone, including disabled folks, people of colour and queer people, so if you've spent time at even one show, you'd know "gatekeeping" isn't about keeping things pure, it's because we're trying to keep brands and instagoths/punks from gentrifying long-standing communities dedicated to the arts! What newbies and dweebs on here should understand is that going to shows, community-building and meeting like-minded people is what goth and punk are about. Not spending exorbitant amounts of money on clothes to look like you participate. Regardless of the community's political alignment (no, punk and goth are not one monolithic political opinion and if you got off the internet you'd figure that out pretty quick), the music is what brings people together, and often allows outcasts to find a community that brands simply cannot replicate.
The answer is: if you want to be a goth or a punk you have to listen to goth or punk music. This doesn't mean you can't listen to other things; you don't even have to dress the part at all to be in the scene! My partner plays in local goth bands and wears jeans and tees and that's about it. Because goth and punk are and have always been music-based, they require you to be involved in the music, and simply put, allowing people to believe it's an "aesthetic" gives way for brands to commodify an entire community. It jeopardizes the sincerity of art! And that sucks ass!
HOW TO GET INVOLVED:
If you're curious but don't know where to begin: your best friends for community-building, DIY and meeting people are your local thrifts, all ages and adult venues, queer clubs, zine-making nights, art shows, indie movie theatres, bookstores, record stores, Etsy, military surplus, vintage stores and I can't stress this enough, Instagram small businesses. Personally, my battle jacket is made up of patches I bought and also made myself, alcohol paint I got from the local art store, safety pins from the sewing store, chains from broken old belts and jewelry, studs from a small business, pins from small businesses and friends and the jacket itself was thrifted. My first battle vest I made when I was 15 was thrifted and almost all of my patches were hand-painted!
The best places to find shows are social media, posters on the street and at record stores, and asking around! There's a reason people you'll hear the term 'ask a punk' about the location of DIY venues; meet some people in the scene and most of them will be open to helping out. My first few shows I went to as a teenager I found on Facebook and through older friends.
This isn't to glorify scenes, they have their own independent issues varying city-to-city, but I promise you you will always find someone who's willing to help you out. What a real gatekeeper looks like is someone who's unwilling to give you a chance because of your identity, whether that be age, skin colour, gender, sexual orientation etc.
THE MUSIC
As I said, people are here first and foremost because of the love of the music. Here's some YT playlists I've put together if you'd like to explore what goth and punk actually are (it's literally not an aesthetic)! Some of this can be found on Spotify, and pretty much always on record/tape/CD!
(Thought I'd mention that maybe a couple of these bands have controversial politics; I do not condone it but regardless of politics they're critical to the history)
PS - I'm not a genre purist, sue me. These playlists include a lot of bands who might not fall under the traditional goth category, just songs that are critical to the subculture.
GOTH (including deathrockers, proto-goth, rivetheads, trad goths, new-wavers, post-punks, mod goths and more)
PROTO-GOTH - music important to the evolution of what became goth in the very late 70s as we know it! Starting with 30s delta blues up to 1980!
EARLY GOTH - the earliest days of goth, mostly focusing on late 70s post-punk, deathrock, new wave and early industrial through to the mid-ish 80s, some people call it proto-goth but I personally consider it first wave (it's all labels anyway!)
GOTH NINETIES - the 90s had a resurgence of goth subculture through industrial, industrial metal and a continuation of deathrock. Other genres begin to find an interest in darker material and take influence from goth bands.
MOD GOTH - the 00s to the present! This is super, super broad and should have something for everyone. There's a lot of modern music with goth influences.
I'm continuing to add to these playlists as I've made them for this post! Check back later and there'll be more.
PUNK (including hardcore punks, no-wavers, trad punks, proto-punks, dispunks and more)
For this I'm going to give you my personal punk playlist - it's such a broad genre with a million subgenres that I can't really cover it all in one post! The playlist is biased as I have my personal faves (including digihardcore, post-hardcore, skramz, no wave, electropunk, d-beat, noise rock and NYC '77). If you have questions about it DM me!
I REALLY hope this means something to someone, because I promise you there's places IRL where you don't have to argue about what makes you a fashion punk or not! If you're interested in the scene, start with the music and then go touch grass. It's music-based first and foremost; never mind the Dolls Kill bullshit.

A new study suggests that since Brexit complex regulations and red tape at the border have deterred clothing and footwear exports from the UK to Europe. However, beauty and health products, as well as gardening and DIY product exports remain robust. The UK has seen clothing and footwear exports to the EU fall significantly post-Brexit, according to a report by the online marketplace Tradebyte and consultancy Retail Economics. This is mainly due to increasing red tape and stricter border regulations. Footwear and clothing exports to the EU have dropped more than 50% from 2019 levels, to £2.7 billion (€3.17 billion) in 2023. In comparison, back in 2019, it was £7.4 billion. In turn, this has led to non-food goods exports to the EU single market falling 18%. This decrease is despite the European e-commerce market being very well-developed. According to the Retail Economics and Tradebyte report, as reported by The Guardian, “Online retail is estimated to add £323 billion of annual sales to EU economies, but additional trade frictions caused by Brexit-related complexities are curtailing this international sales opportunity for UK-based brands and retailers.” Post Brexit, UK and EU trade has fallen under the Trade and Co-operation Agreement, which enables tariff-free trade, however, does little to lessen trade barriers. According to the House of Commons, UK exports of goods and services to the EU amounted to about £340 billion in 2022. On the other hand, the UK imported 48% of its total imports from the EU, at around £432 billion in 2022. In the same year, the UK faced a £5 billion trade surplus with non-EU countries, whereas it had a trade deficit with the EU amounting to about £92 billion. Despite the decline in UK clothing and footwear exports, beauty and health product exports to the EU remain robust. Gardening and DIY products have also seen good export numbers.

Retail Liquidation in Arizona: Opportunities and Strategies
Retail liquidation in Arizona is a rapidly growing industry, offering unique opportunities for both businesses and consumers. As the market evolves, understanding the intricacies of liquidation can provide significant advantages. Whether you are a retailer looking to clear excess inventory or a bargain hunter in search of great deals, Arizona's Retail Liquidation Arizona landscape holds immense potential.
Tumblr media
Understanding Retail Liquidation
Retail liquidation involves selling off merchandise at reduced prices, often because the retailer needs to clear out excess stock, close stores, or manage financial difficulties. In Arizona, this process has become increasingly prevalent due to various economic factors and the dynamic nature of retail trends. Liquidation can occur through several channels, including online auctions, warehouse sales, and liquidation companies that specialize in buying and reselling surplus goods.
Opportunities for Retailers
For retailers, liquidation provides a vital tool for maintaining cash flow and reducing storage costs. When businesses face overstock situations or seasonal inventory changes, liquidation becomes a practical solution to move products quickly. By partnering with liquidation companies, Arizona retailers can efficiently offload surplus merchandise, freeing up valuable space and capital. This approach is especially beneficial for small and mid-sized businesses that may lack the resources to manage large inventories effectively.
Moreover, retail liquidation helps retailers avoid the pitfalls of discounting, which can erode brand value. Instead of slashing prices within their own stores, retailers can sell to liquidators, who then handle the markdowns. This strategy preserves the brand's image while still achieving the goal of inventory reduction.
Benefits for Consumers
For consumers, retail liquidation in Arizona is synonymous with savings. Liquidation sales offer access to a wide variety of products at significantly reduced prices. From electronics and home goods to clothing and toys, shoppers can find excellent deals that might not be available through traditional retail channels. The diversity of goods available through liquidation ensures that there is something for everyone, catering to a broad spectrum of needs and preferences.
Additionally, with the rise of online liquidation platforms, consumers can conveniently browse and purchase liquidation items from the comfort of their homes. Websites and apps dedicated to liquidation sales have made it easier than ever for bargain hunters to score incredible deals without the hassle of visiting multiple physical stores.
Strategies for Success
To maximize the benefits of retail liquidation, both retailers and consumers should employ strategic approaches. Retailers should carefully select reputable liquidation partners with a proven track record of effective inventory management and sales. Establishing clear terms and expectations ensures that the liquidation process is smooth and mutually beneficial.
For consumers, staying informed about upcoming liquidation sales and understanding the nature of the goods being sold is crucial. Researching the reputation of liquidation companies and reading reviews can help identify reliable sources of quality merchandise. Additionally, being aware of return policies and warranty information can safeguard against potential disappointments.
The Future of Retail Liquidation in Arizona
The future of Retail Liquidation Sales Arizona looks promising, driven by continued innovation and adaptation within the industry. As e-commerce and digital marketplaces evolve, the accessibility and efficiency of liquidation sales are likely to improve further. For retailers, this means more streamlined processes and better opportunities to recoup investments. For consumers, it translates to more savings and a broader array of products to choose from.

The Hidden Gems of Online Liquidation Sales: Uncovering Deals You Never Knew Existed
Tumblr media
In the vast realm of online shopping, one of the most intriguing and often overlooked avenues for savvy consumers is the world of online liquidation sales. These sales offer hidden gems that can bring unparalleled deals on a wide range of products. From electronics to fashion, home goods to gadgets, the possibilities are diverse and exciting.
In this exploration, we'll uncover the secrets of online liquidation sales and reveal how you can unearth deals you never knew existed.
Online liquidation sales are essentially platforms where retailers and manufacturers sell excess inventory, discontinued items, or customer returns at significantly reduced prices. These sales can be found on dedicated websites, auction platforms, or even through certain online marketplaces. What makes these sales hidden gems is the element of unpredictability – you never know what treasures you might stumble upon.
One key advantage of online liquidation sales is the potential for substantial savings. As businesses aim to clear out surplus stock, prices are often slashed well below the original retail value. This creates an opportunity for consumers to acquire high-quality items at a fraction of the cost. Whether you're looking for the latest gadgets, fashionable apparel, or household essentials, liquidation sales can be a treasure trove of unbeatable deals.
Electronics enthusiasts are in for a treat when exploring online liquidation sales. Major retailers and manufacturers often liquidate previous models, open-box items, or refurbished electronics at deeply discounted prices. This provides a chance to grab the latest gadgets without breaking the bank. While the packaging may not be pristine, the products themselves are often in excellent condition, making it a win-win for budget-conscious shoppers.
Fashionistas can also score big in the world of liquidation sales. High-end clothing, shoes, and accessories from renowned brands can be found at a fraction of their original cost. Keep an eye out for seasonal liquidation sales where retailers clear out last season's inventory, allowing you to stay on-trend without burning a hole in your wallet.
Home improvement projects become more affordable with liquidation sales offering discounted tools, furniture, and appliances. Renovating or redecorating your living space can be cost-effective when you tap into these sales, providing access to quality items that might have otherwise been out of reach.
One must tread carefully, though, as the unpredictable nature of liquidation sales means items may have limited quantities or variations in condition. It's essential to read product descriptions, inspect images carefully, and be aware of return policies. While the element of surprise adds excitement, informed decision-making ensures a positive shopping experience.
In conclusion, the hidden gems of online liquidation sales offer an exhilarating shopping experience for those willing to explore beyond conventional retail avenues. The potential for significant savings, coupled with the thrill of discovering unexpected treasures, makes these sales a unique and rewarding adventure. So, dive into the world of online liquidation sales, and uncover deals you never knew existed – it's a journey that might just revolutionize how you approach online shopping.

Unveiling the Green Revolution: The Environmental and Financial Benefits of Cash for Clothes
In a world dominated by fast fashion trends and ever-evolving styles, our wardrobes bear witness to a constant cycle of accumulation and decluttering. For those seeking a sustainable and financially rewarding solution to manage their clothing surplus, the concept of "Cash for Clothes" has emerged as a transformative and eco-friendly approach.
The Essence of Cash for Clothes:
At its core, Cash for Clothes is a concept that encourages individuals to sell or trade their gently used clothing for cash or store credits. The process involves individuals bringing in their unwanted garments to participating stores or recycling centers, where the items are evaluated, and compensation is provided based on factors such as condition, brand, and style.
Financial Liberation and Decluttering:
One of the most compelling aspects of Cash for Clothes is the financial liberation it offers. It turns the act of decluttering into a rewarding experience, where individuals can earn money while making space in their closets. This financial incentive not only motivates people to part ways with garments they no longer need but also contributes to a more sustainable and responsible approach to managing one's wardrobe.
Environmental Impact:
The environmental impact of the fashion industry is a growing concern, with the industry being a significant contributor to pollution and waste. Cash for Clothes programs play a crucial role in mitigating this impact by extending the lifespan of garments. Rather than discarding clothing into landfills, individuals can actively participate in recycling and reusing, reducing the demand for new production and conserving valuable resources.
Circular Fashion in Action:
Cash for Clothes aligns seamlessly with the principles of circular fashion—an approach that prioritizes keeping clothing in use for as long as possible. By selling or trading gently used items, individuals become active contributors to a circular fashion economy, where the lifecycle of garments is extended, and the environmental footprint of the fashion industry is minimized.
Tumblr media
Community Connection:
Participating in Cash for Clothes programs creates a sense of community among individuals with shared values. Many of these initiatives involve local consignment shops, thrift stores, or online platforms that connect sellers with buyers. This community-driven approach not only fosters a sense of interconnectedness but also encourages conscious consumerism within local neighborhoods.
How to Get Started:
Gather Your Unwanted Clothing: Start by sorting through your wardrobe and gathering clothing items that are in good condition but no longer serve a purpose for you.
Quality Check: Ensure that the items you intend to sell are in good condition. Clothing with minimal wear and tear is more likely to be accepted and fetch a higher price.
Research Local Programs: Look for Cash for Clothes programs in your local area. This can include consignment shops, thrift stores, or online platforms that facilitate such transactions.
Prepare Your Items: Clean and present your clothing items attractively. Taking clear photos and providing accurate descriptions can enhance their appeal to potential buyers.
Visit the Designated Location: Take your items to the designated Cash for Clothes location. The evaluation process will determine the compensation you receive based on factors like weight, style, and condition.

Straight size, to Plus Size, Acceptance and back to Straight Size
CW/TW for discussions of weight and size changes. Not much weight numbers, but definitely size numbers.
Note: All sizes will be in UK. For US conversion, subtract 4
Chubby childhood, going up, up again, got rid of all my smaller clothes and now I'm back down, missing tonnes of lovely clothes. Typical!
I had a rough childhood, without too much detail, as a Neurodivergant Mentally Ill child, you can imagine what I was going through. Food was a BIG source of comfort for me, possibly bordering Binge Eating Disorder and I'm only figuring out control/balance.
My Personal Size History
Throughout my life, I've ALWAYS been the second biggest or biggest in a room/group. From about age 9 I started wearing women's size 8's and 10's. I always wore the 14-15years in the children's section, which I put a positive spin on "because I was so mature, like a grown up" (yes, 15 was the PEAK of maturity in my eyes. I used to lie on Movie Star planet that I was 15 to seem cool and mature).
At about 16-17 I was about a size 14. Throughout school, Covid-19, college and my collapsing mental health, I went up to a 16-18.
Then after a really rough personal time an 18-20 (depending on the garment/brand).
Self-Acceptance
I started to accept my new size and get rid of some of the old, smaller garments that I was hoping I would fit into one day and I bought clothes that were a little loose so I wouldn't have to rebuy anything.
I became more active/aware of plus size/fat issues, worked on being inclusive of all bodies as possible. (And I still do). I also started actively using the labels of the plus size community and really loved engaging with some of the in-jokes from online.
My New Size, the Here & Now.
Today, I write this as a size 12. No longer plus size (at least, not in Europe). It has been a really strange process with a light grief of my plus size Identity.
I think I should have a proper funeral for my identity. I had really grown to love it in some ways.
Don't be mistaken, I think being a 12 and losing all that weight is great! I've put a LOT of effort and I'm overjoyed to start seeing results. I get such a sense of inclusion that I can march into any shop I want and pick up things in my size.
The Other Size of the Hill
I think it's just a mourning process of change and that the grass is always greener.
For example, I'm a regular charity shop patron and I use second hand fashion reselling apps quite a bit. Around the time I went down to a 14-16, of course, suddenly EVERY charity shop was BURSTING with gorgeous dresses and pants in a size 18. As I've discussed before, money isn't exactly plentiful in my life and it's not a rational nor worthwhile decision to buy garments that won't fit me for very long nor is it feasible to take in most of my garments.
So naturally, the sight of all these stunning pieces did have a twinge of longing.
As is well known in the plus size community, fat girls will wear their items to shreds because nice, fashionable plus size clothes are hard to come by and generally quite pricey.
But straight sized women don't really have this issue as much. And when you consider the consumer habits of Western teen girls who are growing up and outgrowing clothes, there's often a surplus of their lightly worn tacky club clothes (see the Shien-pocalypse for more examples)
All this to say, it's clear the grass actually isn't greener almost all of the time. It was just a moment of 'grief'.
The Future of my Fashion & this Account
As I discussed in my second most recent post, I'm having a style revamp! Mainly, because nothing fits me well and historical fashion is generally quite size adaptive (or at least can be made to accommodate size fluctuations more easily than modern fashion).
I hope to continue my body positivity/neutrality no matter if I'm a size XS or an XL.
If anyone has any advice on the themes and struggles discussed in this post from articles, blog posts, videos, documentaries, films or any other kind of media please let me know!
Thank you all for taking the time to read this post

OVERCONSUMPTION AND MASS PRODUCTION OF FAST FASHION
More clothing is being produced than ever, as retailers and their customers churn through styles at a frenetic pace. Estimates from consulting firm McKinsey and the World Economic Forum suggest the number of garments produced each year has at least doubled since 2000.
Tumblr media
The rapid production of cheap clothing that is advertised as seasonal ranges and must-haves by brands encourages people to get their hands on everything. This idea of staying “in-trend” leads to mindless consumption of clothing. The core issue remains that both excessive production and consumption result in the creation of significant amounts of waste. The surplus inventory frequently ends up in landfills, undergoes incineration, or gets exported to countries such as Uganda, where it contributes to the second-hand clothing market.
Tumblr media
Beyond being wasteful, we're already aware of the pollution caused by the clothes we wear. Thought plastic was bad? Every year, during washing, garments release half a million tons of microfibers into the ocean — the equivalent of more than 50 billion plastic bottles. These microfibers are near-impossible to clean up, and can enter food chains as well as harm our marine life.
“Fast fashion companies & consumers get scapegoated for the problems of the global fashion industry.”

Tumblr media
What Are Liquidation Pallets?
Liquidation pallets consist of surplus, returned, or overstock items from retailers. These goods are sold off at a discount to clear out space or recover costs from returned items. Pallets can include anything from electronics and home goods to clothing and toys. For businesses, this represents an opportunity to acquire products at lower costs, which can then be resold for a profit.
Benefits of Buying Liquidation Pallets
Cost Savings: The primary benefit is the cost savings. Buying items in bulk at a lower price can significantly increase your profit margins.
Variety of Products: Liquidation pallets often come with a mix of items. This variety can help diversify your product offerings, appealing to a broader range of customers.
Eco-Friendly: Purchasing liquidation items helps reduce waste by giving returned or surplus products a second life.
Where to Find Liquidation Pallets in Arizona
Several companies and online platforms specialize in liquidation pallets. Here are some reputable sources in Arizona:
Local Liquidation Warehouses: Arizona is home to several local warehouses that offer liquidation pallets. Companies like Bargain Junction and Arizona Liquidators provide a variety of pallets, often sourced from major retailers.
Online Marketplaces: Websites such as Liquidation.com, B-Stock, and Direct Liquidation allow you to purchase pallets directly online. These platforms often provide detailed manifests of the pallet contents, helping you make informed decisions.
Retailer Auctions: Some retailers, like Walmart and Amazon, have dedicated auction sites where they sell liquidation pallets. These can be a great way to get quality items at competitive prices.
Tips for Buying Liquidation Pallets
Research the Seller: Ensure you’re buying from a reputable source. Check reviews and ratings to avoid scams or low-quality products.
Understand the Condition: Liquidation items can vary in condition. Some might be brand new, while others could be returns or damaged goods. Always read the manifest and understand the terms.
Consider Shipping Costs: Pallets are bulky and can be expensive to ship. If you’re buying from an out-of-state supplier, factor in these costs to determine if it’s still a good deal.
Start Small: If you’re new to Liquidation Warehouse in Arizona, start with a smaller purchase. This allows you to gauge the quality and understand the process without a significant investment.
Network with Other Resellers: Joining local reselling groups or forums can provide valuable insights and tips. Networking with other resellers in Arizona can help you find the best deals and avoid potential pitfalls.

Week Six: Social Media Influencers and the Slow Fashion Movement
To many, fashion provides a form of self-expression, with fashion and one’s outward appearance influencing how they are perceived in their everyday lives. With the rise of social media, aesthetics plays a critical role in the way you are perceived both through your online and offline persona. This week’s reading analyses the popularity of the fast fashion movement and the subsequent reactionary ‘slow fashion’ movement that followed, particularly through the lens of social media influencers.
In his paper ‘Slow Fashion in a Fast Fashion World: Promoting Sustainability and Responsibility’, Brewer discuses that the rise of fast fashion is largely due to the rapid production times that are able to reproduce popular trends at an affordable price (Brewer, 2019). Often, fast fashion brands create ‘knock offs’ of popular clothing brands or items that may be expensive or possess an element of exclusivity, and thus, are unattainable to most. This is appealing to many as it allows consumers to wear clothing that is trendy and current, whilst still affordable. Brewer refers to this as ‘democratized style’ (Brewer, 2019, p. 1), allowing all consumers to obtain exclusive or perceives expensive clothing items and remain up to date on current trends.
Tumblr media
However, the democratisation of fashion has also led to throw-away culture, promoting short lifespans of clothing as fashion trends cycle through at a rapid rate, with consumers constantly chasing the latest it piece. Brewer states that the ‘prevalence of social media fuels the virtually instantaneous movement of trends within communities and networks across the world’ (Brewer, 2019, p. 3).
As a result, the slow fashion movement has gained popularity around the world, encouraging ‘brands to embrace a quality-based rather than a time-based business philosophy based around slower production, ethical attitudes, and well-made and long-lasting products’ (Domingos et al., 2022, p.2). It also encourages consumers to analyse their consumer behaviour and the environmental implications of their purchases, prioritising fewer well-made garments over a surplus of cheaper trend based garments. In the required reading, it is highlighted that those with a higher ethical commitment and environmental awareness are more likely to partake in the slow fashion movement (Domingos et al., 2022).
Tumblr media
In order to promote ethical fashion consumption, it is important to look at how the government can work together with businesses to slow down consumer behaviour and promote ethical consumption (Henninger et al., 2017). Additionally, social media provides a platform to educate and inform people on the importance of ethical fashion and minimising their overall carbon footprint.

Examples of Barter Transactions
Tumblr media
Let's explore a variety of examples showcasing how B2B companies leverage the barter system across different industries.
Media Company and Outdoor Advertising Service: A media company specializing in online advertising may enter into a barter deal with an outdoor advertising service for promoting the outdoor advertising service online.
B2B Products and Services Exchange: A manufacturing company producing industrial equipment might engage in a barter deal with a logistics service provider. In exchange for the manufacturing company's products, the logistics company offers transportation and warehousing services.
Barter Deal in the Health Sector: Healthcare providers can participate in barter transactions to enhance their services. A hospital may barter with a medical equipment supplier, providing them with advertising services in exchange for advanced medical equipment.
Cashless Business Transactions in the Fashion Industry: In the fashion industry, a clothing manufacturer might engage in barter with a marketing agency. The manufacturer provides the agency with clothing items for promotional events, and in return, the agency offers marketing and advertising services to boost the visibility of the clothing brand.
Barter System Integration in Manufacturing: In the manufacturing sector, companies with surplus raw materials may engage in barter to acquire the materials they lack.
These examples illustrate the versatility of barter transactions in the B2B landscape, showcasing how companies from various industries can strategically exchange goods and services to address their specific needs while fostering collaborative and mutually beneficial partnerships.
