Bunny and Raffles are going on a cruise!
Well, not exactly a cruise. While the tour by ship concept was most definitely a thing by 1895, this voyage is actually a scheduled steamship service.
North German Lloyd, or Norddeutscher Lloyd (NDL) to use its German name, merged in 1970 to become Hapag-Lloyd, one of the world's biggest shipping companies. They still do cruises today if you're interested.
The 1890s were a time of intense Great Power rivalry, as the various colonial empires, which I am including the United States as one of, competed for global influence and prestige. The ocean liner business was one of those, as countries vied to have the biggest, fastest and most luxurious vessels.
Anyway, some notes on the trip:
Railway companies ran special trains that connected with the ocean liner departures and would be reserved for the passengers heading down to the port. These would have the best engines, carriages and most skilled crews driving the engines. They would also have plenty of space for luggage.
NDL's stuff generally started from Bremen and then docked at Southampton around 24 hours later. Or rather just off Southampton. Some of the ships of this period were too large to easily dock in some ports and so you'd use a smaller vessel called a tender to carry passengers and their luggage to/from shore. A tender that operated with Titanic at Cherbourg for its sole voyage is now at the museum in Belfast dedicated to that ship.
This is one of the real ships NDL had at the time, later sold to Russia.
By this point, evaporator technology for distilling drinkable water from seawater was becoming widespread, eliminating one major constraint on sea travel.
A pilot was a local seaman who would navigate the vessel into and out of a port, arriving and departing on their own vessel. They are still a feature of the business today as they know the local waters and even with GPS etc, a regular captain might not be familiar with every local feature.
Apparently, deckchairs could be reserved for the whole journey. This might be a good measure to stop certain people from putting towels on them at pools.
"von" indicates Captain von Heumann is of noble birth. While Germany abolished the privileges of its nobles in 1919, you can still get some people with those names today.
These ships would have also had less luxurious steerage accommodation for the less well-off travellers, especially migrants to the US and other places, which NDL carried a lot of.
Anyway, here's an 1889 brochure from NDL that covers things a lot better than I could:

Since it's literally the city's name (Bremerhaven is derived from "Bremer Hafen", meaning "Bremen's harbor"), here are some more port views! There are some really big wharfs, a cruise terminal, one of the biggest automobile hubs and one of the longest coherent riverside quays in the world.
It's the motor of the entire industry and city.

Rostock Port (No. 1)
Rostock Port is a large German port on the Baltic Sea, it is located on the Unterwarnow estuary in the city of Rostock. Most of the port infrastructure is owned by Rostock Port GmbH (until 2016: Hafen-Entwicklungsgesellschaft Rostock mbH "HERO"), a joint venture between the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (25.1%) and the Hanseatic City of Rostock (74.9%). The port operations are carried out by Euroports Germany GmbH & Co. and other private companies. With a total throughput of 28.8 million tons (2017), the ports of Rostock is the fourth largest German port (after Port of Hamburg, Ports of Bremen and Wilhelmshaven port).
The ports of Rostock include the Rostock seaport located on the east side of the Unterwarnow (built since the 1960s), the chemical port for Yara located east of it at Breitling, the independent freight and fishing port (RFH) in the west side of the Unterwarnow, the cruise terminal at the passenger quay in Warnemünde and other smaller facilities such as the Maritime Industrial Park (MAGEB) and the Quay of Alba Nord north of the RFH and the Rostock city port, where goods are handled no more.

The Beagle Channel
Friday 31st January 2020
Brexit Day back home and we were navigating the Beagle Channel en-route to Ushuaia later in the morning.
We were a bit disappointed that our Captain didn’t warn us to get up extra early because when we traversed these waters aboard Arcadia 17 years ago, we had some spectacular views of the glaciers that come right down to the sea long this channel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But this morning, partly because the ship was too early and partly because of the overcast weather, the best we got were some close-ups of the Italia and Holanda Glaciers as we quietly slipped by at 6.45am.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Still pretty impressive though.
Tumblr media
Throughout the morning, as the light improved, so did the view and there was some wonderful scenery along the channel, with Chile still on both sides and eventually,
Tumblr media
Argentina on our port side, before our arrival in Ushuaia, Argentina, set against the backdrop of the Darwin Mountains of Tierra del Fuego.
Tumblr media
We arrived in Ushuaia at 11am to find 6 other cruise ships in port: Hamburg, L’Austral, Expedition, Bremen,Stella Australis and Hurtigruten’s Midnatsol – a long way from home in Norway!
Tumblr media
Interesting fact: I Ironically, back in December 2004, Midnatsol experienced engine failure passing a stretch of sea just a few miles from where we had our experience last year on Viking Sky. n 2004, the captain’s first attempts to anchor the ship failed and passengers were roused at 4am to board the lifeboats but eventually the anchor caught ground and the crew restarted the engines! The cause of the failure that time was a blocked engine inlet!

Photoshoot of the Week: January 13th-19th 2019 - Jasmin & Yamaha YZF-R3
In Medieval times the Weser River brought Europe to Bremen’s door, and the city grew in stature as a Free Hanseatic City from the 12th Century. Sea trade has always been in Bremen’s blood, and from the 17th century exotic products like coffee started arriving. Germany’s first ever coffee house opened in Bremen in the 17th century, while the Bremen-based coffee merchant Ludwig Roselius was the man who invented decaf coffee at the start of the 1900s. Basically caffeine runs through the veins of Bremen inhabitants. To paraphrase a Norwegian saying, “There’s no such thing as bad coffee, just bad roasting.” The same can be said for motorcycles. Certain machines are preferred by one rider over another, in the same way certain coffee roasts are preferred. Sometimes it’s based on nostalgia or budget, sometimes it’s for purely visceral reasons. Anyway it's not hard to explain why bikers from Bremen just love sportbikes: just like caffeine, riding triggers the release of adrenaline and fuels a new sense of fun, adventure, and practicality. Motorbikes can easily become one of the greatest joys of life, if you're ok with the hyper-aware emotional state it puts you in, and proud Bremen citizen and motor-addicted socialite Jasmin has definetely made her choice, as shown by her beautiful photoshoot in the city outskirt. So relax, take a seat and a cup of coffee and soak up the atmosphere watching her great pics because, as Bremen people can confirm you, the best way to enjoy coffee is by drinking slowly and savoring every drop to the full. Then, when the coffeine will take effect, go suddle up and take your bike for a ride! There's always a Jasmin out there that you can try to reach for a run together, but you'll need to go fast! *** *** The Yamaha YZF-R3 is a modern entry-level sport motorcycle, being introduced only in 2015. With power coming in at approximately 50 HP from the 320cc inline twin lightweight aluminum engine, the R3 is more than capable of hard acceleration, cruising at speed, and track riding, as it has a total wet weight of 368 lbs. For the 2020 model year, Yamaha has also produced a YZF-R3 Monster Energy MotoGP model, which is primarily cosmetic with new panels that reflect the YZR-M1’s aggressive racing lines with Monster sponsorship, including a fuel tank badge with the Monster logo. No engine or systems modifications are made, and it uses the same dual-zone ABS, anti-slip, and traction control systems that the base YZF-R3 uses. The cowl shape of the R3 is the same as the R25. The position varies depending on the color, but the difference is only the logo character of “R25” and “R3”. The vehicle size and weight of the R3 are the same as the R25 (ABS). The engine displacement of the R3 is increasing, but the weight does not change, so it is unlikely that it will not be able to support even if foot grounding is slightly worse. The newly adopted LED dual headlights are glared eye designed and expresses more aggressive. At a glance, the M-shaped duct in the center may be like the intake port of the ram-air, but it plays the role of the radiator air intake. The tail light is LED as usual. The R3 has an LED taillight that is the same as the previous model. The R3 has the same duct in front of the fuel tank as the YZF-R1 fuel tank, moreover, a dent is provided to the fuel tank to make it easier for the rider to face down. The height of the fuel tank is lowered by 20mm compared with the previous model at the position of the top of the fuel tank cap. The machining lightweight top bridge succeeded from the YZF-R1 is also adopted to the YZF-R3. Not only the design of the top bridge, but also the handlebar position has been changed. The handlebar position has also been changed from the upper mount of the top bridge of the previous model to the bottom mount of the top bridge when the R3 got a minor change. By that, the handlebar position has been lowered by 22mm. If you ride with high gears, the acceleration is slow at low rpm and changing gears frequently made a busy impression. That is why the YZF-R3 has no need for frequent gear changes and is comfortable to use, because even if you ride the YZF-R3 with high gear, it will accelerate at low rpm. Even when cruising at high speed, I feel that it is 100km/h at 6,000rpm of 6-speed, which is also lower than the YZF-R25, and I feel that I can afford to ride. Above all, the power is higher with the same body and weight as the 250cc class, which makes the winding a lot more fun, and the power-weight ratio is quite excellent. If the cost and effort of the vehicle inspection clearly do not become a negative factor, the YZF-R3 will be more fun and easier to ride. Since there are many common parts, it is also good that you do not have to worry about customizing. #bikergirl #yamaha #yzfr3 #r3 #r1 #yzf #yamahayzfr3 #yamahayzf #bikergirls #bikergirlsofinstagram #bikelife #superbike #throttlezone #instamoto #instamotogallery #biker #bikerchicks #yamahagirl #revsyourheart #universalbikers #motorcycle #motard #superbikes #ridefast #bikeracing #motosports #motolife #fastbikes #RidinGirlsBlog #racing #motorbike #bikelife #bikersofinstagram #bikerfamily #riderich #girlsonbikes #ridemore #sportbike #sexybiker #bikerchick #bikerlady #motorbike #speed #roadracing #ridingsexy #girlswhoride #motorrad #girlsonbikes #motorrad #motogp #moto #helmetporn #yamahar3 #alpinestars

Christmas Market Cruising in Germany
I usually associate cruising with sunshine but I was really excited about cruising to Germany to see the Christmas Markets, even if it did mean packing all my warmest clothes and a woolly hat! We were sailing on my favourite ship, Black Watch, to Hamburg and Bremen, for our annual girls trip. We had a fairly smooth sailing to Germany and got up early the first morning to take the ships shuttle bus into Hamburg. The market here was laid out in a big square, with stalls all neatly in a row, it quickly became apparent that the correct way to ‘do’ a german Christmas market, is to start with a mug of Gluhwein! (Mulled wine) Early as it was in the day, the cold weather took away any doubts I had about drinking alcohol, and we purchased our little souvenir mugs and started as we meant to go on! The wine tasted nicer than any mulled wine I have had before, but it might just be the setting?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The stalls were very pretty, and bursting with lots of beautiful christmas gifts, baubles, hand made goods etc, thrn dotted in between each stall were food stalls, so we soon got into a little routine of drink, eat, shop, repeat! Our favourite food was little delicious pillows of donut, on long sticks, covered in icing sugar, they were divine! We ate quite a few of these....
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The shops surrounding the market were very upmarket designer stores, with guards at the doorways etc, not our cup of tea, so once we had exhausted the market we headed back to the ship.
Our next port of call was Bremen, a smaller, much quainter market, spread out throughout the town, rather than in one square, and with so much character. Again, we collected some really cute little mugs, and tried various drinks, Mulled wine, with added amaretto, mulled rose wine, hot chocolate, the list was endless and the locals do love to drink! Food offerings here were again fantastic, we had potato rosti, caramlised nuts, chocolates, chips with mayonnaise, and of course, sausage!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Evryone we met was so friendly, Germany really is a fantastic place to visit.
We were even lucky enough to meet the big man himself, Santa!
Tumblr media
We took a walk along the historic river district, which had even more stalls, in a much more traditional style, then eventually took the bus back to the ship, Black Watch looked really lovely with the snowy backdrop, and we were welcomed back warmly and ready for a nice nap before dinner! This was a truly memorable cruise and one I would do again in a heartbeat.

Scientists Are Stuck on an Ice-Locked Ship in the Arctic Due to Coronavirus
For the past six months, the German icebreaker Polarstern has been drifting through the central Arctic Ocean, intentionally frozen into the ice. A rotating cast of hundreds of scientists from all over the world have been traveling to and from the vessel for months at a time to assist with the MOSAiC expedition, an enormous polar science effort aimed at improving our understanding of the Arctic environment in a time of rapid, human-caused climate change.
The year-long expedition’s next crew rotation was set to fly to the Polarstern from Svalbard, Norway, in mid-April. But thanks to a global pandemic, that plan has been dashed. Now, the scientists currently aboard the Polarstern are preparing to stay put for approximately six weeks longer than they had planned in order to keep the ship’s myriad research projects alive.
Earlier this month, the government of Svalbard—a remote island archipelago in the Arctic Ocean—closed its borders to outsiders amid growing concerns over Covid-19. As a result, roughly 100 scientists and support staff who had planned to relieve the crew that’s been aboard the Polarstern since February no longer have a flight. MOSAiC’s organizers are now scrambling to pull together a contingency plan, which will likely involve ferrying the next group of scientists north with a resupply shipment aboard a giant icebreaker vessel.
“There’s no way to carry out these flights for the crew rotation,” said Markus Rex, an atmospheric scientist at the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research and expedition leader for MOSAiC. “That has a major impact on how we plan the expedition.”
As the coronavirus pandemic ripples around the globe, travel by air, land, and sea has been brought to a standstill. This is upending countless scientific field expeditions, including planned trips to Greenland this spring, NASA-led Earth science airborne campaigns, and dozens of oceanographic research cruises using ships that are part of the U.S. Academic Research Fleet, which was ordered to stand down earlier this month.
MOSAiC scientists face the challenge of continuing a massive international research endeavor that can’t easily be stopped. As organizers navigate travel restrictions in order to keep crews of scientists and support staff rotating on and off the Polarstern and ensure a steady influx of new supplies, they’re also doing everything in their power to prevent a deadly virus from spreading to the vessel, which is difficult to reach by air and takes weeks to reach by sea.
The first signs of trouble came earlier this month, when a researcher who had planned to participate in survey flights out of Svalbard to support MOSAiC tested positive for the virus. That caused MOSAiC to delay its spring airborne campaign, and subsequently, the campaign was canceled as the Norweigan government and local authorities on Svalbard began restricting international travel. The MOSAiC team is exploring the possibility of extending a series of planned summertime flights to compensate, although Rex warned that it’s “too early to say what will happen to the summer phase.”
The cancellation of these survey flights, which were going to study Arctic ice, cloud, and aerosol properties, are a disappointment, but they don’t compromise the campaign’s core scientific mission.
The bigger concern now is what to do about the crew that was supposed to link up with the Polarstern in April, relieving the roughly 100 scientists and support staff currently aboard. Fortunately, the Polarstern is in no danger of running out of supplies anytime soon, and the scientists currently on board are continuing to go about their day-to-day activities.
“People on Polarstern are safe, they are in a virus free environment, they have all the provisions they need,” Rex said. “They are focusing on science.”
The contingency plan now taking shape involves chartering an icebreaker vessel to ferry the relief crew north after everyone’s undergone a 14-day quarantine and tested negative for the coronavirus. Organizers are currently in talks with “a number of icebreakers,” Rex said, as well as authorities in various partner countries to determine where their vessel can ship off from.
Or, instead of chartering an entirely new ship, the team could potentially accelerate the expedition’s next resupply cruise. MOSAiC had already chartered the Swedish icebreaker Oden to ship north and rendezvous with the Polarstern in June. Organizers are now looking into the possibility of bumping that resupply shipment forward to approximately mid-May, and sending the relief crew along with it. In that scenario, the team currently aboard Polarstern would spend about six extra weeks on the ship, and instead of three more crew changes between now and September, there would be two.
While this would mean leaving behind some scientists who had planned to participate in MOSAiC, Rex says it’s likely that a number of researchers will not be able to go anyway due to travel restrictions from their institutions or countries.
Another challenge MOSAiC’s organizers have been wrestling with is disembarking an outgoing expedition of scientists who left the Polarstern in early March bound for Tromso, Norway. Until very recently, it looked as if these researchers—traveling aboard the Russian icebreaker Kapitan Dranitsyn—would need to find a new port due to Norway’s coronavirus travel restrictions. But recently, the team got some good news: The Norweigan authorities are granting the Kapitan Dranitsyn an exception so that its crew can disembark and head to a nearby airport.
“We will bring them from a bus transport from the port to a shuttle flight back to Germany,” Rex said. “And we have support from the German authorities to travel to Bremen and back to their home countries from Bremen. Obviously that was quite a bit of work to make that happen.”
As the MOSAiC mission soldiers on, other scientists are coming to terms with the fact that their own expeditions, some of which have been in the works for years, are going to have to wait as well.
These include a University of Rhode Island-led campaign to study symbiotic relationships between deep sea animals and bacteria at hydrothermal vents in the southwest Pacific in April, and EXPORTS, a NASA-led effort to study ocean carbon cycling that includes over a dozen research projects and was set to kick off next month in the North Atlantic.
Both cruises were called off earlier this month amidst the U.S. Academic Research Fleet’s 30-day suspension, and both are now anticipating significant delays.
“We don’t know when this cruise will be rescheduled,” said Roxanne Beinart, an assistant professor at the University of Rhode Island leading the deep sea campaign, noting that it took several years for her team to secure both the vessel and underwater robots needed to carry out their planned field work. “Even if the pandemic miraculously resolves very quickly, it could be easily a year before we get back on the schedule.”
As for EXPORTS, it’s currently unclear whether it can be resuscitated in the exact manner as was planned for this year, partly because one of the participating research vessels, the R/V Atlantis, wasn’t scheduled to be in the Atlantic in 2021. Science lead Dave Siegel of the University of California, Santa Barbara said the team has reached out to various European partners to see if a different ship can be secured. But ultimately, some science might have to be sacrificed for the sake of expediency, since a key goal of the campaign was to provide data in support of an $800-million NASA ocean satellite slated to launch in 2022.
“Science is going to go forward,” Siegel said, noting that an initial 2018 campaign in the North Pacific was quite successful. “But having the opportunity to get all the resources in the same place at the same time? I don’t know if we’ll be able to do that again.”

Two ships collide in Mediterranean near Corsica | News | DW
Two cargo ships collided in the Mediterranean Sea near the island of Corsica on Sunday, causing a leak that is most likely fuel, coastal authorities said.
The Ulysse, operated by the Tunisian operator CTN, ran into the Cyprus-based CLS Virgina while it was anchored about 30 kilometres (20 miles) off the northern tip of the island at around 7:30 a.m. local time, the regional naval authority said in a statement.

No one was injured but “the collision caused considerable damage, with an opening several meters long in the CLS Virginia’s hull,” the statement said.
The spill created a trail of pollution 4 kilometers long and several hundred meters wide, heading away from Corsica to the northwest, toward the French and Italian mainland, the statement continued.
10 years of shipping through the frozen north
Let there be sea
Once, only explorers in search of adventure or scientific discovery braved the icy heart of the Arctic. But the ice is vanishing. August 29, 2008 marked a turning point: For the first time, merchant ships could navigate both the Northeast Passage and Northwest Passage, without icebreakers. This ship-friendly period in summer has been getting longer and longer ever since.
10 years of shipping through the frozen north
Shortcut from the Atlantic to the Pacific
The 6,500-kilometer-long (4,000-mile) Northeast Passage leads from Asia, past Russia and Norway, and connects the Atlantic with the Pacific Ocean. The slightly shorter Northwest Passage runs past Canada toward New York. Both routes cross the Bering Strait and the Arctic Ocean. This is only possible if ice cover does not block the way.
10 years of shipping through the frozen north
Taking the long road
To get from Rotterdam to Tokyo, ships currently pass India and go through the Suez Canal in Egypt. That’s about 6,000 kilometers longer than the route through the Northeast Passage. Ships travel to the US East Coast from Asia via the Pacific and through the Panama Canal. Here, too, taking the Northwest Passage cuts over 4,000 kilometers off the journey.
10 years of shipping through the frozen north
Arctic pioneers
In 2009, the Bremen-based Beluga shipping company sent two German heavy-lift carriers through the Northeast Passage for the first time. Since then, shipping traffic in the region has increased. Still, Burkhard Lemper of the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics in Bremen says the Arctic Ocean is not (yet) heavily frequented — if only because the route is only open at certain times of year.

Open water
No climate scientist can say for sure how global warming will progress around the North Pole. But, “Everyone agrees the Arctic will be ice-free within the next 30 to 50 years,” says sea-ice expert Christian Haas of the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven, Germany. Researchers describe the Arctic as ice-free when ice cover falls below 1 million square kilometers in summer.

Disturbing the peace
Biologists fear for the unique wildlife in the Arctic as shipping traffic increases. Beluga whales, Greenland whales and walruses, for example, could be a risk, US researchers say in a study published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. They studied 80 populations of marine mammals and found that more than half are resident along the Northeast or Northwest Passage.

Very special residents
Scientists fear that narwhals in particular could suffer from shipping traffic in the Arctic Ocean. The marine mammals stay close to coastal pack ice. The males are easily recognizable by their helical tusk, which can become up to three meters long. This is a life-size replica in the Ozeanum Oceanographic Museum in Stralsund, Germany.

Antarctica as a model
Researchers and environmentalists are calling for guidelines on Arctic shipping. For example, ships should avoid the whales’ main hunting grounds, fit sailing schedules around their migration, and keep noise and speed in check. “This does not yet exist in the Arctic — that’s the big difference from Antarctica,” Greenpeace biologist Christian Bussau says.

The calm before the storm?
According to Greenpeace expert Bussau, only 50 ships pass through the Northeast and Northwest Passage each year. The German Shipowners’ Association says the figure is in the double-digit range. But Bussau says time is of the essence: “In the long run, there will be a lot going on in the Arctic.” So far, there are no environmental regulations for shipping in the region.

Spill likely fuel
Officials said they were yet to identify the liquid, but a source close to the inquiry told French news agency AFP it was probably leaking “from one of the fuel tanks.”
The Tunisian ship “was maybe going too fast compared to its ability to react,” the source told AFP.

According to the CTN’s published shipping schedule, the Ulysse was traveling from Genoa in Italy to the Tunisian port at Rades near Tunis.
A tugboat has been sent to the scene and the French navy has also provided a vessel specialised in containing and cleaning up pollution spills.
Italy has also offered its assistance as part of the Ramogepol accord between France, Italy and Monaco to jointly intervene in cases of maritime pollution.

Tourist attraction
Cozumel is one of the most popular destinations for cruise ship tourism. As a result, the island’s harbor is large – up to seven ships can anchor here at the same time. They bring five million visitors a year to an island, which has less than 100,000 inhabitants.

4,000 passengers on board
Most of the tourists come from the United States. About 4,000 of them fit on a single one of the huge ships. The pier is called Puerta Maya. It is designed as a shopping mile for cruise ship tourists.

Biggest business
Most people working on Cozumel depend on cruise tourism in one way or another, says the security chief of the pier, José Nieto. Therefore, it’s almost impossible to imagine the island without them.

Second largest reef in the world
The island’s coral reefs are part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest reef system in the world. Despite the ships, it is still in good shape: Underwater visibility is excellent, more than 300 species of fish and unique corals live here.

Main attraction: Diving
Diving instructor Raymundo Ramirez says that only few tourists know how to behave in the fragile ecosystem of a coral reef. He himself only takes small groups below the surface, giving precise instructions so that the corals are not damaged.

Art and history
The people of Cozumel are ambivalent about the island’s reputation as a hotspot for cruise ship tourists. They would rather attract day visitors from the mainland and backpackers who are interested in the culture and the Mayan history of the island.

European Ports Continue to Adopt Shore Power for Marine Use
Challenged to meet increasing environmental concerns and address the emissions levels from ships on dock, a growing number of ports are exploring or expanding shore power alternatives. While supporters believe that shore-to-ship power holds the potential to virtually eliminate ship emissions in ports, critics point to the lack of infrastructure investment, government support, and the potential of simply transferring the environmental impact from ship to shore as the power must still be created.
Ports in Europe and North America have been among the leaders in the technology known as cold ironing. The trend continues to gain momentum at ports ranging in size from the largest to regional ports in especially environmentally sensitive locations. Two additional European ports recently announced plans to proceed with shore power projects.
The Senate in Bremen, Germany recently resolved to create comprehensive additional shore power supply facilities at the ports of Bremen. The plan calls for eight shore power supply units for maritime shipping and two additional connections for inland shipping. Under this plan, by the end of 2023, two shore power supply units will be installed for maritime shipping in the container throughput area in the city of Bremen, another one in the ro-ro port area, and one at the cruise terminal. At Fischereihafen in Bremerhaven, there will be three facilities for government vessels and one for research shipping.
Bremen’s current shore power capabilities are focused mostly on the port and service vessels as well as inland. Two additional facilities for inland shipping at Bremen’s Industriehafen will be added under the new plan so that all the relevant mooring points for river traffic will be equipped with shore power connections.
“The creation of shore power connections for maritime shipping is another step forward and an important milestone in our endeavors to become a green, climate-neutral port,” said Dr. Claudia Schilling, Senator for Science and Ports. “Accordingly, the electricity for these permanently installed shore power connections will come entirely from renewable energy sources.”
The total investments for all ten new connections will amount to 32.4 million euros, half of which will be funded by the Federal Land of Bremen, the other half by the federal government with an administrative agreement to be signed between the federal and state governments.
Calling for ship owners to design and operate more eco-friendly fleets, the senator said, “We can only achieve our goal of clean shipping if everyone involved makes a concerted effort. The more ports that provide shore power, the more cost-effective it will be for the shipping companies to adapt their vessels.”
The pristine environment in port of Flam, Norway
One of the smaller, more specialized ports serving the cruise industry the Port of Flam, Norway is also working to meet the more stringent emissions requirements of the cruise industry by offering hydropower to ships while alongside the port.
Enova SF, owned by Norway’s Ministry of Climate and Environment, recently agreed to provide a third of the cost for a project that includes an underwater cable directly from the hydropower station in Aurland to Flåm. This cable will accommodate future demands and open for development and innovation.
“This was big and important news for us,” said Tor Mikkel Tokvam, Port Director for Port of Flåm. “This shows that we are ready for a changeover. Now we need to find a balance when it comes to the OPS facility and the opportunities it gives us.”
The port director highlights that the project aligns with the regulations for the World Heritage Fjords set by the Norwegian Maritime Authority and the Norwegian Parliaments, which seeks to make the world heritage fjords emission-free in 2026
The port estimates by establishing its OPS facility, that emissions from cruise ships will be reduced by 75 percent while also contributing to Flam’s overall supply of electricity.
