The Bridge Program is an amazing opportunity for people of color who plan on attending Smith. It allows these students to arrive a week before other students to create support students, learn about the resources offered at campus, and get used to college life. Some activities offered include: Zumba, Genki Spark show, karaoke, workshop on how to talk to professors, lecture by a Smith professor on his/her subject, etc. Other notable events for POC are Discovery Weekend (an extra day on campus in addition to Open Weekend) and Women of Distinction. I went to both Discovery Weekend and Bridge and I thought both experiences were essential to both my choosing Smith and creating my support system. I met a group of girls during Discovery Weekend (which is in May mind you) and I still talk to most of those girls now. So, if you have the means, I highly recommend going!!!

The purpose of this Certificate programme is to address the gaps between the undergraduate training of nurses qualified in non-EU/EEA countries and the requirements for nurse training stipulated by EU regulations. Through a combination of study-units the programme is adjusted to meet the needs of different applicants, after an evaluation of each applicant's qualifications. The programme is divided equally between a theoretical component and a clinical placement, which run concurrently.

The topics covered throughout the programme span across multiple facets of nursing care delivery. These encompass both health and social care issues, and range across the primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare settings. The core components of the programme address the over-arching requirements of the EU directive, and will enable students to consolidate their clinical competencies, to understand different healthcare systems, and to work as a nurse in healthcare systems within an EU-member state. In addition, alongside the core study-units, students will pursue a set of theoretical study-units selected as required from a wide array of study-units which address a range of clinical specialities, and nursing / health concepts.

Program Goals

Increase, within a decade, the fraction of physics PhDs awarded to underrepresented minority students to match the fraction of physics Bachelor’s degrees granted to these groups

Develop, evaluate, and document sustainable model bridging experiences that improve the access to and culture of graduate education for all students, with emphasis on those underrepresented in doctoral programs in physics

Promote and disseminate successful program components to the physics community

Key Components

Successful bridge programs share certain key elements, and exist within a supportive institutional context. These contextual and programmatic components build on one another to provide students with a complete educational experience, from admissions and induction to research and mentoring.

The deadline for 2018 applications is March 16, 2018.

The mission of the APS Bridge Program (APS-BP) is to strengthen physics in the United States by increasing the number of underrepresented minority students who receive doctoral degrees in physics. The APS-BP is open to prospective students who meet the eligibility criteria, exhibit academic promise, plan to pursue a doctoral degree in physics and can enhance the diversity of doctoral students in physics.

Students enroll in a one- to two-year Bridge Experience in a post-baccalaureate program that provides research experience, advanced coursework, mentoring, and coaching to prepare a graduate school application. The Bridge Experience aims to improve access to and culture of graduate education for all students, with emphasis on those underrepresented in doctoral programs in physics.

Successful applicants will be supported through a combination of funding from the Bridge institution and the APS Bridge Program.

We also forward information to institutions who may consider your application before this date, so please complete your submission as soon as practical.

The ideal candidate for this program will be a current or former undergraduate physics student, who for various reasons does not have the necessary coursework, research experience, or guidance to successfully apply for admission and complete a physics PhD program. Successful applicants must demonstrate the commitment, drive, and potential to complete a rigorous graduate physics program. Underrepresented minority students including African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans are strongly encouraged to apply.

Eligibility

Students must:

Degree must be complete by the time students enter the Bridge Program.

Degrees may include physics, applied physics, engineering physics, astrophysics, and other closely related disciplines. Non-physics majors must have completed core physics requirements to be considered (Read FAQ).

Did not apply to a physics graduate program; or

Applied to one or more physics graduate programs, but were not accepted by any program
