Somewhat related to that Canadian bands poll here's a playlist of some of my favorite Canadian artists some of whom are absolutely famous in the states and some of whom I have literally never heard anyone talk about.
And yes I started it with The Arrogant Worms what do you take me for.
Honourable mention to Loreena Mckennitt; The Mummers Dance is a core memory but is completely incompatible with 99% of my taste in music

Few people had probably heard of frontotemporal dementia until earlier this year, when the family of actor Bruce Willis announced the 68-year-old had been diagnosed with the condition. Frontotemporal dementia is a rare disease – thought to account for only one in every 20 cases of dementia. Symptoms usually develop in a person's late 50s, first affecting their behaviour, personality and language ability. Unlike other forms of dementia, memory only becomes impaired in the late stages of the disease. People diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia usually die within eight years of their diagnosis. While around 30% of cases are inherited, the cause of frontotemporal dementia is largely unknown. This also means there are no cures available or treatments to slow its progression. But recent research, I have published with colleagues at Lund University, may have brought us one step closer in our understanding of how frontotemporal dementia develops and progresses. We discovered that the way your brain looks may determine your resilience to the condition.

This book presents a comprehensive view of the work of American painter Philip Taaffe (b.1955), who has expanded the parameters of painting through his use of silkscreen, linocuts, collage, stencils, gouache, chine-collé, marbling, acrylic, enamel, watercolour and gold leaf. Possessing many technical skills, Taaffe has moved decisively between unique pictorial inventions and appropriations, as well as overlaying divergent modes of representation, through cultural patterns found in ornament, and biomorphic abstraction.
John Yau's insightful text is the first to look at every part of Taaffe's artistic development, from the works he made at Cooper Union while a student of Hans Haacke, to the present. It pays special attention to Taaffe's acquisition of different techniques, as well as investigating his various sources of inspiration, which include the work of experimental filmmakers Stan Brakhage, Bruce Conner and Harry Smith, the Natural History illustrations of Ernst Haeckel, and the ancient art of paper marbling.

Bathurst Masters Championships preview part 1
It is less than two weeks to the World Cross Country Championships and to date attention has been focused on the open races, especially in Australian circles and rightly so, because the team of McSweyn, Caldwell, Hoare and Hull is a genuine medal chance in the 4 x 2km relay event.
Tumblr media
But for older athletes, there is excitement surrounding the Masters events being held in conjunction with the Open championships. Holding the two events at the same time and venue is a new idea. Until now, Masters athletes were used to finding cross country races scheduled for the first day of the World Masters Track & Field Championships held every two years. This was odd scheduling, because running a tough cross country is far from an ideal preparation for track racing. It did, however, guarantee strong fields, which unfortunately can't be said for Bathurst. There are very few overseas entrants for the races, probably because for northern hemisphere residents, it's an awfully long way to travel for a 6k or 4k race, plus perhaps a 2k relay. The 100 Euro entry fee probably hasn't helped! But despite the disappointing roll up of foreign runners, there will be some great racing across the age groups. There are some world famous names among the entries such as Moneghetti, Creighton, Stanton, Froude (NZ) and Robinson (NZ).
Tumblr media
So let's look at the age groups 40+ and 45+, with apologies to the 35+ athletes, who I'm leaving out because I think that 35-39 is far too young to be considered a "Master" of anything! For present purposes, I'm ignoring the 4 x 2k relay events because pairings are as yet unknown.
The men's 40+ 6k race has the highest number of foreign entrants of any race on the program with six countries plus Australia being represented. The strongest overseas competition will likely come from Ben Bruce (USA), who is an elite steeplechaser and ran 2:27 in last year's Boston Marathon, and is the clear favourite to win. Shane Grund from Victoria has been in sparkling form of late (14:49 for 5000m in 2022) and will be close to the front. NSW runner Russell Dessaix-Chin is another elite runner, but current form is unknown. Victoria's Steve Dinneen (Vic) will give it everything and is a strong podium chance. Sweden's Martin Kjall-Ohlsson is another runner to watch. The women's 40+ field looks comparatively weak. April Lund from the USA is the standout with times of 35:19 for 10000m and 1:19.51 for a half marathon last year and should make it a USA double. Nicole Joseph (Vic) is a former Australian W40 5000m champion, but has been quiet since her win in 2019. The form of the other W40 competitors is similarly unknown.
Tumblr media
The M45 race is going to be a beauty, with several runners in similar form. I like Paul Mulholland from South Australia, who ran 15:43/9:19 for 5k/3k in the SA Masters Champs in March 2022. Julian Marsh (once Victoria, now living in California) ran 32:55 for 10k just yesterday, so he will fancy his chances. Nick Moore (NZ) has a similar 10k time from 2021. Jeff Chaseling from NSW had some very fast times from 3000m to the marathon in 2021, but not much since. Any one of these four runners could take the chocolates. Nathan Crowley (Vic) will be better suited to the 2k relay. It is a shame that neither Sinead Diver nor Belinda Martin will be there to dominate the W45 race, but I guess the other women will be glad of that. Again the women's field looks much softer than the men's, with only two overseas entrants. Anna Kasapis (Vic) is in brilliant form, and although 6k will stretch her, I think she will win. Another Anna will be prominent - Anna Thompson Munro (Vic) is a five times World Cross Country representative for Australia. Mainly based on their 1500m times, Katie Siebold (Vic), Melissa Oloyede (ACT) and Kriszta Kovacs (NSW) are all podium chances.
Tumblr media
I am sure that some of my highly educated readers will have other insights into the chances of the various competitors in the 40+ and 45+ races, and I welcome any comments that readers may have. Otherwise, stay tuned for part 2 of this blog sequence, where I will preview the 50+ and 55+ events.
P.S. Thanks to Scott Lawrence for his help with the statistics.

A playlist for if anyone wants to feel sad about the passing of great artists, and also possibly reflect on the lack of diversity in my music taste. The ones I came up with when thinking of my five favourites in this category (which I was thinking of because I've been getting really into Corb Lund's new-ish album, El Viejo) do give you ten names that are remarkably similar, demographic-wise.
It's also not completely fair; I'm pretty sure the gender diversity in my music collection is... not amazing, but definitely has more women than what I usually write about on here. One of my very favourite songs in this niche is actually by Lynn Miles, a local folk singer who's near the top of the artists I've seen live most times in my life/have had her full discography since I was about 14 (her discography's expanded since I was 14, and my collection has expanded accordingly). But it doesn't quite fit because Merle Haggard's American.
youtube
I do occasionally listen to women, I promise. Though the fact that these are all white people writing about dead white people, I've got no defense for that. I was raised on Canadian folk and country music. It's got a lot of white people writing about dead white people in it. Sometimes you get white people writing about living white people. Sometimes you get Francophones. Lennie Gallant's Acadian. That's what passes for diversity.

FROM THE SMALL’S LIVE STREAM: BEN WOLFE with Nicole Glover, Peter Bernstein, and Aaron Kimmel, SMALL’S JAZZ CLUB, 5 MAY 2023, 9 pm set
I was so struck with Nicole Glover’s 8 November trio set at The Jazz Gallery that I am going back through the Small’s Archive to see at what point her playing, er, call it, mellowed—not as rushed, more melodic and linear, with a middle registered tone. It is perhaps the result of her not being the leader and playing someone else’s compostions or playing, as with George Colligan on 5 November or here more than six months ago, both with a chordal instrument. In any case, she is just as smart a student of the instrument and the music as a whole, but she is not as intense.
This gig had Peter Bernstein’s guitar, if anything more steeped in that instrument’s tradition, than Lage Lund who was so key to Melissa Aldana’s 12 Stars. Seeing that band and living with that album got me thinking about saxes and guitars (Sonny Rollins with Jim Hall, Pat Metheny’s Song X with Ornette Coleman and 80/81 with Michael Brecker and Dewey Redman, Paul Desmond also with Jim Hall but also Ed Bickert) and the possibility that the narrower range of the instrument opened up more space for the horn. As a one off gig, I don’t imagine that this fundamentally transformed Glover’s playing. But with BEN WOLFE’s smart tunes with extended intricate lines played in sync with guitar and/or bass, Glover drew on those different skills than in her earlier trio work.
Sideways opened things easily settling into an extended parallel line for all of them to play. Glover took her turn with a linear mid-ranged solo that had a punch without being rushed. In Community she came in with an extended note over the moody tone Bernstein added to Wolfe’s defining figure. Masked Man for Lenny Bruce had a late 50sish bounce and either had a second part that was slinky and smoky. Lots of interplay among bass, guitar, and tenor. Aaron Kimmel’s Unjust was bright but also included a bop quote and a rich fluid solo from Glover. She was plaintive on the ballad Love Is Near. The closer Blind Seven had both a relaxed pace and another extended line with a double time section before releasing nicely.
Wolfe was properly forward as the leader but wasn’t overwhelming. Bernstein was a tasteful team player as was Kimmel. All contributed mightily, but I was listening with a purpose and focused on Glover. Wolfe’s tunes gave her an interesting platform to showcase facets of her art that I’m noting more carefully.

5 years ago, on May 29, 2016, the Hollywood Vampires realized their 4th concert of the “Raise the Dead/2016 Summer Tour” rocking the Gröna Lund Park, in Stockholm, Sweden.
This show marks: * The third show of the Vampires outside the USA on this tour (after Portugal and Germany) * Their first show in Sweden (where they’d return for more two shows in 2019) * The first time they performed in an amusement park (the Gröna Lund also hosts various special musical events throughout the season) * Their first show performed during the “Midnight Sun”, a natural phenomenon occurring in the summer months where the sun can be seen even in the middle of the night. The Vampires played at daylight on that day... * The first time Johnny and the Hollywood Vampires were a victim of boycott.
> Behind the Scenes: Boycott and threats towards Johnny.
While people were excited for the show, behind the scenes, things were not so good. After Ms. Heard accusations made two days earlier, on May 27, some people tried to boycott the event to the point of the Head of Information at Parks and Resorts, Annika Troselius, release an open statement online:
"We are opposed to any sort of violence, of course. But it's also equally important that we cannot judge someone beforehand. Everyone, including Johnny Depp, should be allowed to have the right to be considered innocent until proven guilty." -  Annika Troselius (May 30, 2016)
Johnny was also going to a tough moment alone... It was revealed by some of the hotel employees and fans that although he was respectful, shy as always, treated everyone kindly and even signed autographs for fans outside of the hotel. He was also quieter than the usual, tried not to call attention and decided to “keep to himself”, staying on his room (a £8,000 penthouse suite) at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm throughout most of the day, ordering room service and choosing not to spend time with his band mates which stayed at the hotel's restaurant and enjoyed the city. He was probably fearing for his life...
It was also revealed that along his usual bodyguards, a total of eight were protecting him, and Johnny even asked for a private boat to go with Joe Perry to the amusement park which is located on an island. It was said that the bodyguards were ready “to protect him at all costs” once there were a certain fear of someone attempt or even threat Johnny’s life. On the park, it those who attended the show also said that there were more security guards than usual, one of them (or a stage crew) was even on the left side of the stage paying attention to the crowd.
Fortunately, nothing happened. The set-list remained the same from the previous shows as well the support from the fans which started queuing outside the park since 10 in the morning. Although some people tried to boycott the show, those who attended and believed in Johnny made this a SOLD-OUT show and the boycott failed.
