NWR #43 “Bruno”

Bruno is one the last of the Southern Pacific AC-12 Cab Foward locomotives, built in March of 1944 as number 4294, making him the youngest of the AC-12s. He worked on Donner Pass & Cascade Summit line until he was withdrawn in 1956. But instead of going to be scrapped, he was purchased by the NWR, who were looking for a new locomotive to haul mixed traffic work since Sam was being repaired following an accident. He was moved to the east coast and loaded onto a ship, and was sent away to the island of sodor. Once arriving on his new railway, he was modified with new bufferbeams and requested he would be given a livery based on the Sodor Line Cabooses, since he liked how unique there livery was compared to the ones he’d seen in America. Bruno has a hard time trying to fit in at sodor, mostly due to culture shock, but after awhile, he gotten used to it. He was given the number 43 in 2019, and still runs goods and passenger trains on the mainline as of 2023. He’s also good friends with fellow autistic engines, bobtail and duck. As terms of personality, he’s pretty much the same as his AEG counterpart, but he also gets grumpy sometimes as well, and he doesn’t have ADHD like bobtail. And he did sorta like his portrayal in AEG, but wishes he could have been a locomotive in the show and not a caboose.

And if your curious the Sodor Line Cabooses in my AU all wear a red livery with black roofs and wheels, white lining and yellow bufferbeams.

Moment of appreciation for Diesel and Bruno's bond because they genuinely mean so much to me. All of the main cast are good friends to Bruno but I've noticed that Diesel is almost always the one with him if they need to put him next to someone and I think that's great. Like there's multiple occasions of Diesel looking out for him and encouraging him to use his headphones to block out the overstimulating things he's hearing. They're even canonically best friends like does it get any better than this.

Oh my goodness! Thank you so much!🥹🫶 It's always fine to ask some questions!

1: Anything on rosie or rebecca?: I got some stuff! I'll do Rosie first. Just like the series, she's got a little crush on Thomas when she's younger and Thomas isn't having it. Lol. She is a tomboy, but still enjoys girly stuff too. As she gets older, she grows out of her childhood crush and her and Thomas remain good friends. She matures into quite a graceful, strong, and respectable lady. Unfortunately, I don't have a design or much info for her yet. But hopefully soon!

Then we have Rebecca! She's definitely interesting! I based her design off frilled lizards and sunflowers! She's the youngest out of the female characters! Probably just in her teenage years!

Rebecca crash landed on the island and claimed that she was traveling with her clan there. She waited for days for them to show up. But they never came. Now, Thomas and his family couldn't possibly let such a sweet dragon get abandoned like this. So they let her into their clan! Rebecca shockingly got very attached to Gordon. And vise versa. He becomes a father figure to her. (In fact, he ends up adopting her eventually!) Rebecca reminded him of his younger sisters whom he loved.

2: How about anything of the narrow gauge engines (they're my favs) like proteus, luke or stanley/smudger? Who’s your fav?: I love them and they definitely in here! They're the Mountain Cave Clan! A clan of small ground dwelling dragons! With Skarloey as their Patriarch! There's tons of them! From well known characters like Duncan, Peter Sam, and Rheneas, to obscure extended family! And Proteus is actually their guardian spirit! I'm still figuring out his role and powers, but just like in the series, if you can find his lamp, it will grant you a wish! But you have to pass a series of trials and tests to even get your hands on it! (Oh, and Luke was my favorite when I was a kid! I loved him!)

3: Are ya gotta add any aeg characters like bruno, sandy or kana? Kana’s gotta be a speedy queen: I think so actually! I've seen a lot of AUs with Bruno as Henrietta and Toby's kid and OH MY GOSH YES. That's adorable.😍 And Kana is definitely there! She's Kenji's little sister in this! I'm not sure about Sandy yet. But she seems cute. So maybe!

Being so fr I've never seen an autistic character that I've connected with as much as Bruno. Every episode I watch is just me going "HE'S JUST LIKE ME!!" because....like...I idenitfy with him so hard even though we're still a bit different. I can handle eye-contact and I have an incredibly expressive voice in contrast to Bruno not enjoying eye-contact and having a less expressive voice. But his reactions to certain upsetting situations and social interactions reflects a lot on myself and I feel so incredibly seen. Most shows made for grown adults can't get a single thing right but this kids show has made a character that is both relatable to an actual autistic person AND isn't talked down to by the other characters. Bruno isn't afraid to speak up about his feelings, and nobody shames him for doing so. When he's is upset, even if his friends are confused, they still do their best to understand why he's upset and what they can do to fix it. They learn to find a way to go about their activities while still making Bruno feel comfortable and included. When he loses a comfort object his friends spread the word as quickly as possible, and they do things that will help Bruno feel calmer until they can get the object back. That is the kind of support I wish I got when I was younger (and today tbh) and so it's really healing to see a character I like getting that kind of love and support.
