Costa Blanca South Bowls Roundup
COUNTRY BOWLS CLUB On Friday morning it came down to the last game of the season with Country Bowls Cubs holding onto 5th position by 1 point against the Roundheads, so everything was to play for. The Cubs welcomed San Luis Pumas and were motivated to score as many points as possible and they did not disappoint. With 4 out of 5 rinks winning and the overall shots were a positive difference to the cubs of 44, can they hold onto 5th place? The newly formed cubs have excelled in their first year at competitive bowling and deserve every success. Winning rinks were Sandra McIlroy, John Burke & John Mallet, Chris Stevens, Craig Dyson & Andrew Bryce, Dave Smith, Dot Davies & Niel West and finally Sheena Mallet, Derek Lewis and Peter Robins. Great result Cubs. Country Bowls Geckos were away for their last match of the season in  the afternoon against Quesada Swans. From the off the Geckos took command with a real determination to finish the season on a high with another good win.  A couple of the rinks were very close at the halfway mark and in the second half one rink was nip and tuck to the very end. By the 18th end the Geckos had their wish and were well up on all but one rink which was 3 shots up going into the last end, but unfortunately managed to drop 4 shots losing them the game by one shot. The victors were: Viv Brown, Pat Ray, Brian Ray, 20-12; John Jukes, Graham Richardson, Wayne Osguthorpe, 24-10; Carole Donnellan, Les Turner, Den Birkett, 18-13;  Really bad  luck to Sylvia Rennie, Jean Turner & Jim Rennie who have been so successful all season to lose by just one shot on the last end.  Well done the Geckos. For more information on Country Bowls please visit the website www.countrybowlsmurcia.com tel 966191552 or email [email protected] EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB Monday morning the Palominos entertained Greenlands Chestnuts and played well to take 3 rinks and the overall shots, with a wind that was tricky to say the least. A good result for the Palominos. The Raiders were at Vistabella playing the Buggies and met some strong opposition, though coming away without a point. Sometimes the opposition is just too strong. Meanwhile the Pintos were at Mazarron playing the Miners, the stiff breeze making playing a mat with a reduction from 8 rinks to 7, just a little difficult, never seems to work well to me. But as always the company was good and we enjoyed the day, though alas we came away with just one point. Friday found the Rangers playing host to La Marina Merlins, playing well and ending with 3 rinks and the overall shots by just the one, a good result showing that the extra moment of concentration can bring you the extra 2 points. Meanwhile the Mustangs were at Greenlands against the Oaks and put in a good effort and particularly perseverance in the case of John Skipper’s trip, getting used to the rink until 15-1 down, then coming back to win 17-16. The Mustangs came away with 2 rinks, a very good away result. We should at the end of the season thank the team captains for their sterling efforts. In the afternoon the Broncos were at home to La Manga Crusaders and had a great day, taking full advantage of the home mat by taking all the available points. Val Ryder, Sheila Cox and Mike Cox 18-17. Emma Walsh, Ann C Taylor and Keith Longshaw 25-10. Maria Wilkinson, Liam Foley and Rob Clark 33-10. Gill Bartlett, Marion Haynes and Dave Haynes 22-5. Brian Yates, Pam Harris and Brian Harris 27-11. New Release Roundup, 13 October 2018: Fantasy and Adventure
This week’s roundup of the newest releases in fantasy and adventure features ancient conspiracy theories, Saxon warriors, a Comanche rescue, the ultraviolent Goblin Slayer, and Haruki Murakami’s newest novel.
The Aryan Agenda (Harvey Bennett #6) – Nick Thacker
Ancient conspiracy theories. Neo-Nazis. Nonstop action.
Harvey Bennett and his CSO team receive a distress call from their friend, Sarah Lindgren:
Her father has been kidnapped. Worse, she believes his kidnapping is only the tip of the iceberg.
From Santorini to Egypt, Michigan to Athens, The Aryan Agenda is a nail-biting mystery/thriller of epic proportions!
Harvey Bennett is back in his most intense adventure yet.
Dragon Storm (Dragonwalker #5) – D. K. Holmberg
A war long thought over has returned, and this time the empire is not equipped to survive. Still, the dragons are safe, living in the heart of the forest near an ancient Deshazl settlement. Though hidden from the Damhur who would control them, Fes feels they deserve more and longs to see them fly free again.
When another attack leaves the empire weakened, Fes and a few friends search for allies. Finding those allies is key, but who can they trust? With the most recent attack, the likelihood of defeat looms close, and without help, they will certainly fail.
Worse, not all is as it seems. The war that has raged for centuries has left a far more lasting effect than any have ever known. The empire must be secured, and only then can Fes take the next step in ending the war—this time for good. But if he can’t protect the dragons, how can he defend against the Damhur?
Ghost in the Amulet (Ghost Night #3) – Jonathan Moeller
Caina Amalas was once a deadly Ghost nightfighter, a spy and agent of the Emperor of Nighmar.
For all her life, Caina has run from the memory of her cruel mother.
But her mother was merely the weakest member of a family of powerful and ruthless sorcerers.
Now Caina has the Ring of the ancient necromancer-king Rasarion Yagar, and her aunt Talmania Scorneus is hunting for her.
And to take the Ring, Talmania is willing to kill Caina and everyone close to her…
Goblin Slayer, Volume 5 – Kumo Kagyu
A young priestess has formed her first adventuring party, but almost immediately they find themselves in distress. It’s the Goblin Slayer who comes to their rescue–a man who’s dedicated his life to the extermination of all goblins, by any means necessary. And when rumors of his feats begin to circulate, there’s no telling who might come calling next…
A young noblewoman has disappeared while out on a goblin hunting quest. When Goblin Slayer and his party set out to find her, they are stunned to discover a horde of goblins have built their nest within an ancient dwarven fortress…and these ones even appear to be followers of some primitive, sadistic cult! But what troubles Goblin Slayer most of all is their leader, who is stronger and more intelligent than any goblin he’s faced before…
Grit – Ron Scwab
“Grit” McKay survived the bloodiest battles of the Civil War without incurring as much as a single scratch on his body. When money became hard to come by after the war, he began taking jobs to recover white children that had been abducted by raiding bands of Comanche.
Jessie Hamilton’s twin sister, Jennie, was taken by the Comanche when the girls were ten years old. Even though she has been separated from her sister for fourteen years—was Jennie even still alive?—Jessie still feels a powerful connection with her sister, and she is determined to find out what happened to her . . . with the help of Grit McKay.
Overflowing with breathtaking adventure, Ron Schwab’s latest Western novel has as many twists and turns as the trails Grit McKay must carefully navigate in his search for Jennie Hamilton.
Killing Commendatore – Haruki Murakami
In Killing Commendatore, a thirty-something portrait painter in Tokyo is abandoned by his wife and finds himself holed up in the mountain home of a famous artist, Tomohiko Amada. When he discovers a previously unseen painting in the attic, he unintentionally opens a circle of mysterious circumstances. To close it, he must complete a journey that involves a mysterious ringing bell, a two-foot-high physical manifestation of an Idea, a dapper businessman who lives across the valley, a precocious thirteen-year-old girl, a Nazi assassination attempt during World War II in Vienna, a pit in the woods behind the artist’s home, and an underworld haunted by Double Metaphors. A tour de force of love and loneliness, war and art—as well as a loving homage to The Great Gatsby—Killing Commendatore is a stunning work of imagination from one of our greatest writers.
A Rival From the Grave – (The Complete Tales of Jules de Grandin #4) – Seabury Quinn
Today the names of H. P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, August Derleth, and Clark Ashton Smith, all regular contributors to the pulp magazine Weird Tales during the first half of the twentieth century, are recognizable even to casual readers of the bizarre and fantastic. And yet despite being more popular than them all during the golden era of genre pulp fiction, there is another author whose name and work have fallen into obscurity: Seabury Quinn.
Quinn’s short stories were featured in well more than half of Weird Tales’s original publication run. His most famous character, the supernatural French detective Dr. Jules de Grandin, investigated cases involving monsters, devil worshippers, serial killers, and spirits from beyond the grave, often set in the small town of Harrisonville, New Jersey. In de Grandin there are familiar shades of both Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot, and alongside his assistant, Dr. Samuel Trowbridge, de Grandin’s knack for solving mysteries—and his outbursts of peculiar French-isms (grand Dieu!)—captivated readers for nearly three decades.
Collected for the first time in trade editions, The Complete Tales of Jules de Grandin, edited by George Vanderburgh, presents all ninety-three published works featuring the supernatural detective. Presented in chronological order over five volumes, this is the definitive collection of an iconic pulp hero. The fourth volume, A Rival from the Grave, will include all the stories from “The Chosen of Vishnu” (1933) to “Incense of Abomination” (1938), as well as an introduction by George Vanderburgh and Robert Weinberg and a foreword by Mike Ashley.
A Sellsword’s Valor (The Seven Virtues #4) – Jacob Peppers
Belgarin’s forces have retreated, but in the city of Perennia there is no rejoicing. The air is filled with the mourning cries of survivors, and the wind that blows through the city carries the smell of freshly dug graves and death.
As the city grieves, Aaron and his companions attempt to hold together an alliance that threatens to crumble around them. While the alliance’s leaders bicker and argue, Boyce Kevlane, an ancient wizard bent on revenge, has taken Belgarin’s place as king and uses his twisted powers to create an army out of nightmare.
To stand a chance of keeping the coalition together, Aaron is forced to venture into Baresh, a city gripped by madness and terror, in search of proof of the coming danger.
To survive, Aaron will be forced to call on his friends and the growing power of his bond with a creature of myth. Yet even this may not be enough. For there are other powers in the world, darker ones, and there is no telling what secrets the shadows hold.

His blood is Saxon His heart is Viking His battleground is England
While Uhtred might have regained his family’s fortress, it seems that a peaceful life is not to be – as he is under threat from both an old enemy and a new foe. The old enemy comes from Wessex where a dynastic struggle will determine who will be the next king.  And the new foe is Sköll, a Norseman, whose ambition is to be King of Northumbria and who leads a frightening army of wolf-warriors, men who fight half-crazed in the belief that they are indeed wolves. Uhtred, believing he is cursed, must fend off one enemy while he tries to destroy the other. In this new chapter of the Saxon Tales series—a rousing adventure of courage, treachery, duty, devotion, majesty, love and battle, as seen through the eyes of a warrior straddling two worlds—Uhtred returns to fight once again for the destiny of England.

Colorado football faces life after a dream season
Can Mike MacIntyre’s Buffs keep the magic going, or will defensive collapse kill the fun?
Most of us aren’t fans of a top team. Most don’t have memories of countless championships. For many of us, the defining moment of our fandom comes from something we never saw coming.
From 2009-12, Colorado went 10-36. From 2013-15, the Buffaloes went 10-27. This once-proud program produced five top-10 finishes in an eight-year span from 1989-96 and nearly reached the BCS Championship in 2001, but hadn’t been to a bowl since 2007 or had a winning season since 2005. A generation of young CU fans had no memory of success. Attendance hadn’t averaged over 40,000 since 2012.
Head coach Mike MacIntyre was building toward a third-year breakthrough in 2015, but his Buffs were obliterated by injury and went just 4-9, falling from 77th to 98th in S&P+. They were unlucky from a turnovers perspective, they lost a lot of close games, their starting quarterback was hobbled, and their two-deep at linebacker and defensive back was a smoking crater.
In 2016, they got healthy.
The injuries that hurt in 2015 had created depth for 2016.
The Buffaloes fielded one of the most experienced two-deeps in the country.
Second-year defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt finally had the pieces.
But we could only see it in hindsight. It was the Buffs’ turn to make a run. And they checked every box on the dream season checklist along the way.
— The Colorado Buffaloes are college football’s 2016 dream-season team
When the words “pitchers and catchers report” dangle in front of a Major League Baseball fan’s face in January or February, their eyes get a little bit glassy, their hearts full. At that moment, no matter which team you’re a fan of, you are the most optimistic version of yourself. If your team was good but came up just short last year, this is the year. If your team was bad last year, this is where the bounce back begins.
College football has its own version of that. Everybody’s always feeling good about Backup Running Back A and Redshirt Freshman B in spring football. True Freshman C is really turning it on in fall camp.
Usually, though? Our team this year is going to be about what it was last year. Except when it’s not.
The dream season is why most of us keep coming back. It is rare, and it takes sometimes absurd faith to believe it might happen to our team. And sometimes it does.
Colorado was once a mainstay on the national stage. The Buffaloes spent time in the AP top 15 13 times in a 14-year span from 1989 to 2002. Though they never reached No. 1 again after 1990, they finished third in 1994 and nearly made the BCS title game in 2001. They were one of the sport’s steadiest powers.
After a decade in the wilderness, Colorado finally returned to said stage. The Buffaloes began the 2016 season 4-2 with competitive road losses to awesome Michigan and USC teams, then ripped off six straight wins to secure the Pac-12 South title. They found themselves ranked for the first time since 2005, then jumped into the top 10 for the first time since 2002.
Sure, the end of the season was rough — against Washington in the Pac-12 title game and Oklahoma State in the Alamo Bowl, the Buffs were outscored by a combined 79-18. But most dream seasons aren’t about the final chapter.
Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports
Mike MacIntyre
Of course, in sports, there is rarely a true final chapter. It’s 2017 now, and all of the incredible moments of 2016 are now simply a prelude to whatever follows. Is Colorado “back” now? Was 2016 a sign of things to come or a time capsule, buried and unrelated to, and providing minimal context for, what followed?
There are just enough of last year’s faces gone and just enough returning that you can see what you want here. The pessimist could point out that starting quarterback Sefo Liufau is gone and that QB continuity is a huge thing for turning an out-of-nowhere surge one year into sustained quality the next. And the pessimist could certainly point out that defense was the strength of last year’s team and that defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt, the top three defensive linemen, and about half of the primary linebackers and defensive backs are all gone.
The optimist, meanwhile, could note that new starting quarterback Steven Montez got his feet wet when Liufau was hurt last year and showed some exciting explosiveness. The optimist could definitely point out that last year’s skill corps returns virtually intact, as does the offensive line, and that while a lot of edge play-makers are gone from last year’s defense, the backbone — particularly the inside linebacker and safety positions — appears sturdy and experienced.
S&P+ basically splits the difference between optimism and pessimism. After surging from 97th to 18th last year, MacIntyre’s Buffaloes are projected 50th in 2017. That probably means a bowl game but minimal South division contention. It would obviously be quite the drop from last fall, but considering that the roster is dominated by underclassmen everywhere outside of the skill corps, and considering MacIntyre just signed CU’s best recruiting class in nine years, that would be a decent bridge toward future solid seasons.
That might be the most lasting takeaway from last season’s dream run: There’s a Colorado future worth talking about now. Welcome back, Buffs.
2016 in review
2016 Colorado statistical profile.
If you somehow saw last season’s incredible run coming, you had the opportunity to make quite a bit of money on Colorado early in the season. It took quite a while for both S&P+ and Vegas to catch up to the Buffs. The same went for opponents, I guess.
First 5 games (4-1): Avg. percentile performance: 83% (~top 20) | Avg. yards per play: CU 6.4, Opp 4.3 (plus-2.1) | Avg. performance vs. S&P+ projection: plus-23.3 PPG
Next 7 games (6-1): Avg. percentile performance: 77% (~top 30) | Avg. yards per play: CU 5.2, Opp 4.9 (plus-0.3) | Avg. performance vs. S&P+ projection: plus-1.4 PPG
Last 2 games (0-2): Avg. percentile performance: 27% (~top 95) | Avg. yards per play: Opp 6.0, CU 4.0 (minus-2.0) | Avg. performance vs. S&P+ projection: minus-29.2 PPG
Perhaps the most impressive part of CU’s 2016 run was how the Buffs so quickly learned to grind out results against solid teams while destroying lesser ones.
They allowed teams like Idaho State (56-7), Oregon State (47-6), and Arizona (49-24) minimal hope while figuring out ways past pre-collapse Oregon in Eugene (41-38), Stanford in Palo Alto (10-5), and Utah at home (27-22). The offense was awful against UCLA, but the defense rose to the occasion. The defense couldn’t get a handle on Oregon, but the offense carried the day.
This all came to a screeching halt late in the year, once CU had secured the South title. But the final two games don’t completely change the effects of the first 12.
Offense
Full advanced stats glossary.
All signs points to at least some degree of regression for a Colorado defense that leaped from 89th to 12th in Def. S&P+ last year. That puts quite a bit of pressure on an offense that itself rose from 95th to 47th in Off. S&P+; the Buffs’ attack appears far more likely to sustain its gains, but it will have to do more than that if CU wants to remain a South threat.
The co-coordinator combination of longtime MacIntyre assistant Brian Lindgren and former Buffs captain and Texas Tech assistant Darrin Chiaverini found some sparks in its first year. CU was explosive early in the season and able to grind later on. The Buffs figured out ways to move the chains with quick passing and strong short-yardage rushing, and early in the season, Montez was every bit as good at this approach as Liufau.
Montez’s redshirt freshman campaign was dramatically up-and-down. He went 0-for-7 when Liufau got hurt against Michigan and 9-for-21 in the blowout losses to Washington and Oklahoma State at the end of the year. But when he had a moment to prep as the No. 1 passer, he showed major promise. Against Oregon, Oregon State, and USC, he was 67-for-99 for 823 yards, seven touchdowns, three interceptions, and a 154.8 passer rating.
If that’s the Montez we can expect with a full offseason to prepare, then CU’s offense will be ridiculously good. That’s an “if,” not a guarantee, but it’s on the table.
Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports
Shay Fields
Montez’s supporting cast is deep and exciting.
Tailback Phillip Lindsay is back after combining 1,252 rushing yards with 520 receiving yards in 2016. He struggled at times behind a line that had to start nine different guys due to injury and shuffling; he averaged 4.6 yards per carry through the first four games, 7.6 over the next four, and only 4.1 thereafter. But he’s steady and versatile, and he doesn’t move backwards that much.
Slot receivers Devin Ross and Jay MacIntyre combined for 101 catches, 1,199 yards, six touchdowns, and a 51 percent success rate in possession roles. Senior receiver Bryce Bobo provided decent efficiency (46 percent success rate) with decent explosiveness (12.5 yards per catch) over about five targets per game.
Wideout Shay Fields was the big-play guy, averaging 15.8 yards per catch with a solid-for-a-big-play-guy 58 percent catch rate. Plus, in limited roles, senior Kabion Ento and senior Johnny Huntley III combined to catch nine balls for 128 yards, 14.2 per catch.
This is one of the most experienced sets of skill corps talent in the country, and while you’d like to see a little bit more explosiveness, perhaps that will come. Montez appeared to be a more aggressive passer than Liufau at times, Fields has all sorts of deep ball potential, and quite a few youngsters — Huntley, redshirt freshman Derrion Rakestraw, maybe a freshman like KD Nixon, Laviska Shenault Jr., or Jaylon Jackson — could provide an occasional over-the-top threat.
A little bit more explosiveness in the run game wouldn’t be a bad thing, either. The Buffs were efficient on the ground but rarely carved out chunks larger than five yards. That assured second-and-manageable, but it also meant CU had to go quite a few plays without a mistake to score points. Lindsay wasn’t particularly explosive, but he was Dalvin damn Cook compared to backups Kyle Evans and Donovan Lee. A steadier line — one that returns all-conference tackle Jeromy Irwin and honorable mention all-conference guard Gerrad Kough — could help.
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports
Phillip Lindsay (23) and Tim Lynott (56)
Defense
If Montez is the real deal and one more big-play guy emerges, the CU offense could potentially rise into the top 30. That would be preferable because the defense is probably going to drop out of the top 30. There are quite a few veterans back, and as mentioned above, the backbone of the defense could be solid. But you simply don’t lose this many playmakers, plus your defensive coordinator, without a drop-off.
Defensive ends Samson Kafovalu and Jordan Carrell and tackle Josh Tupou combined for 14.5 tackles for loss and nine sacks, solid production from linemen whose top job was to occupy blockers and not necessarily make plays. They were also almost the only three linemen who played major minutes. None missed a game, and only one other lineman (end Leo Jackson III) made more than 6.5 tackles.
Linebackers Kenneth Olugbode and Jimmie Gilbert combined for 20 TFLs, 12.5 sacks, eight passes defensed, and seven forced fumbles. They, too, didn’t miss a game, nor did returning inside linebackers Rick Gamboa and Addison Gillam. These four made 86 percent of CU’s tackles at linebacker.
Corners Chidobe Awuzie and Ahkello Witherspoon and safety Tedric Thompson combined for a patently absurd nine TFLs, four sacks, and 58 passes defensed, plus three forced fumbles. They also didn’t miss a game. Neither did the top three returnees. Six DBs accounted for 93 percent of CU’s DB tackles. Half are gone.
In these previews, I try to focus mostly on who’s back, not who’s gone. But ... damn. In one year, CU improved from 71st in havoc rate to 31st, from 21st in DB havoc rate to an easy first. Almost all of the reasons for that improvement are gone, and it’s all but certain that the injury bug is going to bite harder than it did last year.
Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports
Addison Gillam
New defensive coordinator D.J. Eliot is in a thankless position; the former Kentucky defensive coordinator inherits a defense nearly guaranteed to fall backwards a bit, but he might have the right approach. His hire was honestly a bit curious to me — in four years as UK defensive coordinator, he managed a Def. S&P+ ranking better than 68th just once, and his 2016 D ranked just 86th — but to the extent that UK had defensive success last year, it came in the form of big-play prevention. The Wildcats allowed 194 gains of 10-plus yards (90th in FBS) but only 26 of 30-plus (49th).
They were also dreadfully inefficient, though. Again, a curious hire.
If Jackson, junior tackle Jase Franke, and either of two JUCO transfers (end Chris Mulumba or 350-pound man-mountain Javier Edwards) can occupy blockers up front, the linebackers should be able to flow well to the ball. Gamboa and Gillam are back, as are juniors Drew Lewis and N.J. Falo, and senior Derek McCartney, basically the only regular to miss significant time with injury last year, is vital. He had 11.5 TFLs for a 2015 defense that lacked disruption. He could fill a similar role this year.
The safeties should be rock solid, too. Afolabi Laguda and Ryan Moeller were key members of last year’s rotation, and junior Nick Fisher saw some minutes, too. But the Buffs are starting over at cornerback. Converted receiver Anthony Julmisse is their official veteran leader after recording seven tackles and a single interception last year. JUCO transfers Dante Wigley and Kevin George will be asked to contribute immediately, and if they don’t, I’m not sure who does.
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports
Isaiah Oliver
Special Teams
Not every Colorado unit improved last year — special teams remained pretty bad. The return game, with Anthony Julmisse on kick returns and Jay MacIntyre and Isaiah Oliver fielding punts, was explosive and reasonably efficient. But punts and kickoffs were shorter than you would think in Boulder’s thin air, and CU tried three place-kickers with minimal consistency. They combined to miss three PATs and make just 74 percent of their under-40 field goals, about 10 percent lower than you’d prefer.
Most of last year’s pieces are back, but the legs desperately need to improve.

Little improvements could go a long way for Colorado in 2017. The No. 50 S&P+ projection makes sense to me, but it creates a schedule overloaded with relative tossups.
The Buffs have a win probability between 37 and 61 percent in eight games. There are two likely losses (Washington, USC) and two likely wins (Texas State, Northern Colorado), and everything else is up for grabs. If the offense exceeds a frankly conservative No. 47 projection, or if Eliot can keep his finger in the dam for a while on defense, an eight- or nine-win season is very much within reach.
On the flip side, of course, if injuries pile up and the defense collapses, then having only two sure wins makes the floor awfully low.
There’s still quite a bit to like, though. Montez really did look awesome in his midseason audition, and he’s got countless experienced weapons around him and a better line in front of him. And McCartney’s return and a new set of JUCOs might give CU just enough options on defense to hold the fort.
Big-time football made its return to Boulder last year. Now we get to see if Mike MacIntyre can keep it around a while.

GRUNDY: (FRI) PACK BEAT ROCKET IN OT, 2-1
Tumblr media
Hartford Wolf Pack 2, Laval Rocket 1 (OT) BY: Bryce Grundy, Hartford Wolf Pack Hartford, CT, October 25, 2019 – Danny O’Regan’s goal with 41.4 seconds left in overtime gave the Hartford Wolf Pack a 2-1 win over the Laval Rocket Friday night at the XL Center. The Wolf Pack trailed the game as late as the 18:23 mark of the third period, when Nick Ebert scored, with goaltender Igor Shesterkin headed to the bench for an extra attacker. “I think they wanted to come in and be the first ones to beat us in regulation,” Wolf Pack head coach Kris Knoblauch said. “It felt like a playoff game tonight.” The Rocket jumped on the board first with the man advantage in the second frame. Ryan Poehling got the lone goal for the Rocket at 7:33, with assists from Phil Varone and Alex Belzile. Laval nearly made that lead stand up, but Ebert finally solved Rocket goaltender Charlie Lindgren (19 saves) with a slap shot to the stick side. “Their D gave a nice screen for me,” Ebert said. “At the end of the game, we got the job done. It wasn’t the prettiest, but it’s two points. We’ll come back at it tomorrow.” It was then O’Regan who sealed the deal for the Pack in overtime, letting go a blistering one-timer from the left-wing circle, off a cross-slot pass from Boo Nieves. The goal came one second after a tripping penalty to Laval’s Josh Brook expired. “I saw Boo rush and had to jump into the play,” said O’Regan. “I drove the net and he put it right on my tape. “We worked hard and are a tough team to play against. The power play is something we need to work on to get some momentum.” Shesterkin also provided the team with much-needed momentum throughout the game, stopping 18 of 19 Rocket shots. “Couldn’t be more impressed with Igor from the second he got here. He’s got a great attitude,” commented Wolf Pack defenseman Ryan Lindgren “Tonight showed a lot about our team and the way we play the game. We’re able to finish late.” The win kept the Wolf Pack unbeaten in regulation for the season, at 6-0-0-1 for 13 points. The Wolf Pack are right back at the XL Center Saturday night, hosting the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at 7:00 PM, and it’s “Witches & Wizards night”. Costa Blanca South Bowls Roundup 3 Feb 19
El Rancho Bowls Club Monday morning found the Pintos playing the Dalmations at San Miguel in a nippy and tricky wind, but the Mustangs persevered and came away with a very good result, taking 4 of the 5 rinks and the overall shots. Malc Sykes, John Skipper and Jim Gracie 20-10. Ann C Taylor, Denise Morgan and Bob Taylor 20-16. Ron Greenstreet, Diane Yates and Bob Morgan 20-13. Irene Thomson, Keith Cunningham and Eddie Thomson 20-16. Brian Gilham, Paul Durham and David Whitworth 13-20. Meanwhile the Raiders had a bye.The Palominos were at home to another San Miguel team, the Pointers, who went away with all the points. But there is no shame in that, as all continue to hone their skills and gain experience, with two of the rinks losing by just one shot. On Friday morning the Rangers took on Emerald Isle Outlaws at home and although they took just one rink, they lost another by just one shot and had another close match. However with the introduction of 5 rink matches and more team, I think some players are in a lower division than they would have been and it is only fun after all. Meanwhile the Mustangs were at San Luis playing the Tigers and played some tough matches, but came away just the one rink, but we had good fun and some interesting bowls. In the afternoon the Broncos played the Miners at Mazarron and put in a good performance to come away with 2 rinks.   For further membership information contact Sheila Cox at [email protected] or Brian Taylor on 965077093 or at [email protected] COUNTRY BOWLS CLUB For the third time in seven days Country Bowls played host to a team from La Siesta ( they must like us! ). Winning rinks: Agnes Burke, Pat Ray & Brian Ray 30 – 8, Rob Hallam, Graham Richardson & Jim Rennie 16 – 12, Craig Dyson, John Burke & Dennis Birkett 25 -11, John Jukes, Derek Jiggins & Geoff Paylor 20 – 9. Great result. Middle of the league Country Bowls welcomed leaders Greenland’s Cedars to a wet and windy miserable Friday morning in the Valle Del Sol. The Cubs stacked up ready to do battle and try to improve on their 10 – 2 defeat from the first leg. Everyone dug deep and the standard of bowling was exceptional, the Cubs held their own at the half way mark. The wind continued to blow and the bowling didn’t ease. In the end, the newly developed Cubs for this season took the spoils on three rinks and drew on one giving an overall score of 9 – 3 to the Cubs. Winning rinks; Chris Stevens, Craig Dyson & Andy Bryce. Steve Mattison, Agnes Burke & Lynne Bryce. Sandra McIlroy, Dot Davies & Peter Robins. What a fantastic and encouraging result. Well done Cubs. In the afternoon the Geckos travelled to Quesada to play a strong team currently lying third, just one point behind the second place team La Siesta Golds. Quesada proved to be too strong for the Geckos winning on three rinks and winning the overall shots. The Geckos winning teams are; Pat Patton, Dennis Wade & Brian Patton, Sylvia Rennie, Jean Turner & Jim Rennie. A reasonably good performance by the Geckos against such a strong team away from home. We only managed one winner so congratulations to the rink of Roy Thompson, Dennis Wade, Fred Trigwell and Brian Patton who won 19 - 12. One of our other men’s rinks had a very close match but were just pipped at the post.  In spite of the result a good day was had by all as both the weather and the company were excellent.  This was a good experience to play with what you would call ‘better bowlers’.  Many thanks to   Country Bowls for hosting the event and providing a very good meal afterwards. On Monday the Falcons in the Discovery Division were away to Quesada Rubies.  Not a good result for us as we only won on one rink.  Our winning rink was:  Debbie Perryman Fred Trigwell and Barry Evans 14 – 12.  The final result being 55 shots for to 83 against.  2 points to Horadada to 10 for Quesdada.  Onwards and upwards Falcons, keep going. Friday saw Horadada Royals away to San Miguel Boxers.  The weather was a bit iffy. Will it rain or not?  The rain stayed away till the last 2 ends.  It came down quite heavily and everything changed!  Again not a good result for Horadada.  But team don’t despair, we had one winning rink and as is unusual for a report, I feel I have to mention the one rink that was a nearly!  It was down to the last end and when rain postponed play, the skips were still to bowl. Not looking good for Horadada as we were 4 shots down, then our skip came in and moved the jack back to give us two shots up.  Nail biting stuff, have we just got it?  No, ‘cause opposition skip came in with last wood and claimed shot.  Horadada lost by 2 shots.  Our winning rink was: John Goddard, Jack Linehan and Barry Evans 18 – 15.    Well played Guys.  Final score was shots for 70 to 120 against.  Points gained 2 to 10 against. Keep ‘em bowls a rollin’ Horadada.  We can show ‘em! Horadada offers a warm welcome to new or experienced bowlers, and provides the necessary equipment.  Our roll-up days for this friendly club are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings.  Please contact Fred Trigwell on 659139129 for more information. After a very competitive and close match, the Pearls won on 3 rinks, lost one and drew one. So they won overall 9 - 3 points with the shots 91-88. This means they’ve held on to their 4th place in the league just 2 points behind San Miguel Beagles. Meanwhile, Quesada Diamonds entertained San Miguel Beagles at home. Good mornings bowling with some really close scores, 3 rinks were won on the last end, against a very strong San Miguel side. Despite some close games, the Diamonds only won on one rink so the result was a win for San Miguel 10-2. Reflecting the tight match, the overall shots were close at 101-96. Costa Blanca Bowls Roundup 26 Jan 2019
COUNTRY BOWLS CLUB Monday saw La Siesta Sputniks orbiting around the Country Bowls rinks. Three of the Sputniks got ‘lost in space’ but two of them managed to hang around giving a result of Flamingos 8 Sputniks 4. Winning rinks; Agnes Burke, Pat Ray & Brian Ray 25 – 9 Rob Hallam, Graham Richardson & Jim Rennie 27 – 8 Craig Dyson, Derek Jiggins & Geoff Paylor 19 – 10 Well done Flamingos. Country Bowls welcomed La Siesta Silvers on a beautiful dry Friday morning. Both teams were poised to take the points and as the wind picked up, the individual matches were thrown into turmoil. Rinks 5 & 6 both playing two styles of game and strategy and adjustments were the order of the day. In the end it was 3 – 2 to the Silvers with the Cubs taking the shots by 1. 76 – 75. Overall a great days bowling and a very fair 6 – 6 result. Winning rinks; Dean Webb, Derek Lewis & John Mallet Chris Stevens, Craig Dyson & Andy Bryce. Good work Cubs. The second game of the day saw the Geckos away in the afternoon to San Luis Leopards with no less wind than the morning match. Winning rinks; Pat Emmett, Les Turner & Jim Rennie 26 – 14 Pat Patton, Dennis Wade & Brian Patton 22 – 9 John Jukes, Pat Ray & Wayne Osguthorpe drew with 16 – 16 Shots 97 – 83. Points 7 – 5. Well done Geckos. For more information on Country Bowls please visit the website www.countrybowlsmurcia.com, email [email protected], or telephone 966191552. El Rancho Bowls Club Monday found the Palominos having a bye. The Pintos played the Hawks at Horadada, with a stiff cold breeze bringing out the thermals and many layers, of course by the end of the match we had warmed up. The Pintos took a while to get used to the mat and in the end came away with two rinks, never a bad score away from home.In the afternoon the Raiders were at San Miguel playing their Pointers, which turned out to be a tough match, as we would expect as San Miguel always turn out a good team particularly with the home advantage, it's a hard call. The Raiders came away without a point but were not shamed. Friday morning found the Mustangs entertaining Emerald Isle Cavaliers on a wonderful morning with a stiff breeze, which made the bowling very tricky. Most of the way through the match the Mustangs were behind on all rinks, but came good to take 4 of the rinks and the overall shots by just the one shot. The Broncos were at Horadada playing the Royals and put in a good performance to take 3 rinks, a very good away result. The Rangers played the Conquistadors at Vistabella and were a trip short and no doubt the wind caused a few problems. They came away with one rink, but enjoyed the challenge. The annual President’s versus Captain’s teams will be played on wednesday 6th February, all are invited to bring donations of non perishable foodstuff, toiletries and unwanted clothing for Reach-out a charity for the homeless.  For further membership information contact Sheila Cox at [email protected] or Brian Taylor on 965077093 or at [email protected] Emerald Isle Bowls with Elwyn Morris Monday took the Titans to La Marina Explorers, and they had a great 10-2 aggregate 97-81, winners were M Riley P Coffey I Brewster 21-13, D Rhodes K Jolliffe D Gerrard 21-14, M Veale G Odell J Smyth 19-14    J Pooley D Leeming B Kavanagh 15-14 Neptunes played at home against Monte Mar Torreodores and had a fine 12-0, aggregate of 98-55    winners were M Whitelock J Westall P Heaney 30-9, D Horne S Wickens D Donovan 20-12, E Morris C Parsons A Malcolm 17-14, A Brown S Watson C Warner 14-13 Moonrakers played at home against La Marina Pathfinders, and had a good 10-2 aggregate 108-70, winners were, L Harris P Willicott R Clive 25-9, D Close J Loughran E Bennett 25-17, ,I Hughes G Ponsford M Willicott 24-10, V Cameron G Dyer P Dix 24-10, this trip scored a HOT SHOT Saturns travelled to La Siesta Pioneers and they got beaten 4-8 aggregate 85-94, winners were C Selby G Smith E Shepperd 26-19, J Elliott  F Thomas R Ede 17-14 Wed saw the Emerald Isle travel to BBC in the winter league, and they lost 4-8 aggregate 86-90 winners were R Clive C Smyth M Odell C Lindgren 17-12, D Jones M Veale J Mulloy P Coffey 20-17. We are also on Facebook Quesada Bowls Club Report by Dee Stephenson In the South Alicante Winter League all 3 Quesada squads played San Miguel teams this week. Quesada Pearls travelled to San Miguel to play the Beagles for a morning of very competitive bowling. Due to illness, the Pearls were unable to field a full squad but they won on 3 of the 4 rinks played and achieved 68 to 66 shots before penalties of 2 points deducted. They’ve maintained their 4th place in the league, just one point behind 3rd place San Miguel Beagles. Meanwhile on a lovely sunny morning perfect for bowling, the Diamonds entertained San Miguel Alsatians, currently a couple of places below them in the League, so a result was a priority for both teams. Quesada won 3-2 rinks but the shots went to San Miguel by the narrowest of margins 91-90. The points were drawn 6 each so the Diamonds maintained their position in the league. The Rubies also hosted San Miguel - the Dalmatians. Not the best of days for the Rubies who lost the match 2 -10 and the shots were 65 to San Miguels 112. Onwards and upwards Rubies, plenty more matches to play! In the Southern League, Quesada Swifts travelled to Mazarron for a sunny and warm days bowling. Another important league match between Mazarron the leaders and the Swifts in second place, so everything to play for. After a tough morning, Mazarron were victorious winning 4-1 rinks and 97 to 54 shots, winning the match 10 points to 2 and maintaining their lead at the top of the league. In the Winter league, Quesada hosted Javea and the match ended in a draw 6 points each. In the Federated 4’s, Quesada Panthers played San Miguel Mohawks. Quesada won the rinks 2-1 but lost the shots by one, 48-49, so the match ended in a draw 6 points each. At Quesada Bowls Club we welcome both new and experienced bowlers. We’re a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. In addition to league matches and Club competitions we have our popular Saturday morning chicken drive which is open to visitors, and we have free coaching for new members.  So come along and see what we have to offer! Costa Blanca Bowls Roundup WE 10 November 18
Country Bowls Club by Jo Richardson The Flamingos travelled to Greenland’s on Monday in good spirits. Our old sister club is blessed with some fine bowlers and so the morning progressed with each rink being keenly contested. By early afternoon, however, the game had taken on a different look and the Flamingos went on to record another fine away win. Results are; Rink 4 – Sylvia Rennie, Dave Smith and Jim Rennie 11 – 21, Rink 5 – Pat Ray, Peter Robins and Brian Ray 30 – 21, Rink 6 – Ben Noke, Pat Emmet and Ray Emmet 20 – 13, Rink 7 – Dennis Wade, Les Turner and Phil Warrington 20 – 21, Rink 8 – John Jukes, Derek Jiggins and Geoff Paylor 23 – 28 Friday saw the Gecko’s arriving at the club to a green that had experienced a wild hailstorm through the night and Graham, the owner of Country Bowls, working the carpet brush to clear the sitting water and make the green playable. After a couple of hours of hard work the game was back on. San Miguel were tough opposition coming to Country Bowls from a great win against the top of the league team Mazarron Miners. The Gecko’s played hard and fought to the end in very difficult high winds resulting in a great win. The Gecko’s winning teams were Pat Patton, Den Wade and Brian Patton. 26 – 10, Ben Noke, Pat Ray and Brian Ray. 22 – 18, And Brenda Jiggins, Derek Jiggins and Ray Emmet. 18 – 13. With a total of 95 shots against San Miguel on 88,the Gecko’s enjoyed a welcome 8 – 4 win. Our second game on Friday were the Cubs away to Vista Bella Conquistadors on a very windy afternoon. Whilst the bowls ran straight on one hand and swung far on the other, it took both teams all their skills and talent just to play to the jack. A closer game could not have been predicted with Country Bowls taking the shot difference of 6 and winning on 3 rinks. Overall score 8 – 4 to the Cubs. Winning rinks Joel Fernandez, Craig Dyson and Andy Bryce, Chris Stevens, Dot Davies and Peter Robins, and lastly Rob Hallam, Dave Smith and Niel West. A great week for Country Bowls, congratulations Cubs on a great win. Onwards and upwards. Peter Parsons, Don Fowkes and Barbara Forshaw had admirable draw at 20 – 20. Then away went the Pathfinders to play Vistabella  Eagles and came away 12 – 0 winners much to the delight of Captain Jean  Perchard and Hubby Terry who won 18 – 11 with  help from Margaret Sadler. Not to be out done Barry Sadler, Dave McGaw and Desna Lowe won 26 – 14. Dave Hadaway, Bernie Carr and Jean Tregoing won 18 – 12 while John Withers, Mike Lowe and  Reg Jackson managed one less 17 – 12.  Garth Slater, Paul Tregoing and Trevor Hancock had a nice 22 – 14 win.  This puts the Pathfinders at the top of the Discovery League. Tuesday was Race Night; It started out as Rat Racing and has since progressed to its present form of Monkey Racing. I daren’t comment how it got that name.  Over eighty people attended and it was an extremely funny and jovial evening with all punters having a great time. Sue Freeman was the overall Champion Jockey closely followed by Trevor Hancock.  Thanks to all members who put in the time and effort to make it such a success.  Not much success in the Winter league when we travelled up to Javea being beaten 10 – 2.  Our winning rink was Don Fowkes, Peter Parsons, Jean Fowkes and Jan Parsons, well done to them.  Come Friday and in the Southern League Div  A the Ospreys cut the Greenland Oaks down to size with a 12 – 0 whopping.  Rumour has it that the Captain might not get another game this year the way things are going. Roy Hart, Don Fowkes and Barbara Forshaw won 31 – 9.  Peter Parsons, Wendy Latham and Anne Stone 18 – 15 winners.  Mike Stone (the man in form), Cliff Rawlinson and Janet Parsons had a fine 15 – 10 win.  Alex Whyte, Jim Reeves and Kathy Manning came back to win 23 – 18.  Shirley Hadaway, Phil Pape and Margaret McLaughlin had a good win 21 – 10. Costa Blanca South Bowkls roundup 1 July 18
Country Bowls Club by Geoff Paylor The ‘Badger’s’ got to grips with La Siesta ‘Hornets’ in their final home game of the summer league. Winning on 5 of the 6 rinks for a total of 10 points did not indicate the closeness of the games with the final shot difference. A close run thing at 103 shots for and 97 against. A pleasant, friendly game in the hot hot sun. Winning rinks; Brenda Jiggins, Lynne Bryce & Geoff Paylor 23 – 12, Joel Fernandez, Derek Jiggins & Peter Dix 18 – 7, Niel West, Ben Noke & Andy Bryce 18 – 14, Dean Webb, Geoff Eggleton & Phil Warrington 20 – 17, John Hassell, Graham Richardson & John Mallet 19 – 16. Well done for a great team result. Also, we celebrated our President’s 85th Birthday with a cake and a song. Happy Birthday again Joel Fernandez. On Wednesday saw the ‘Herons’ travel to our local rivals Horadada for the final match of the VCL season. Horadada were lying middle of the table with the ‘Herons’ below so nothing to play for! A nice friendly match! No such thing, the morning proved to be very hot, not only weather wise but also on the rinks. We held it together and went out with a bang winning 9 points to 3 leaving a good feeling of a job well done. Winners; Ladies singles Brenda Jiggins 21 – 16, Men’s pairs Ben Noke & Geoff Paylor 19 – 11, Triples Lynne Bryce, Derek Jiggins & John Mallet 11 – 10. And a good point in the rinks Geoff Eggleton, Graham Richardson, Andy Bryce & Phil Warrington 12 –12. I would just like to thank all our teams for a fine effort in what was a difficult season for the ‘Herons’. Well done everyone. For more information on Country Bowls please visit our website www.countrybowlsmurcia.com or ring 966 19 1552 or email [email protected] El Rancho Bowls Club. With the Buckskins having a bye this week, our VCL team had the only league match, this being at San Miguel against the Marshalls. The marshals having the home advantage proved to be too strong on the day for El Rancho, despite some good all round play. El Rancho came away with one rink, that being the rinks match. Ladies singles: Diane Yates 14-21. Gents singles: Jim Gracie 8-21. Pairs: Rob Clark and John Skipper 7-23. Trips: Sheila Cox, Mike Cox and Brian Taylor 16-26. Our condolences go to Barbara and the family Greenlands Bowls Club by Dave Webb In the VCL League Greenlands Jasmines were away to La Marina, and In very hot weather both teams played their best and after a very close game it was the Jasmines who came out on top. Final score was - total shots for - 98. total shots against - 86. Points for - 10.  points against - 2. Winning rinks were - Ladies Singles, Mary Lockley - 21 shots to 16.  Pairs - Phil Lockley, Dave Webb - 21 shots to 18. Trips, Sandra Jones, Val Duchet, John Obrien. - 17 shots to 15. Rinks, Jean Thompson, Janet Webb, Dave Dudding, Barry Collins. - 19 shots to 16. We should all pat ourselves on the back for getting promoted last season and finishing near the top with 67 points in this league. Bodes well for next season, well done everyone. Horadada Bowls Club by Irene Graham This week we were away to a strong La Siesta team, who have now caught us up in the league table.  It was a disappointing result for us on a really warm day and it saw us wilt in the heat, losing the overall shots total by 123 - 86 and the match by 10 points to 4. Our two winning trips were Wayne Jackson, Margaret Odell and John Hurlock by 25 - 14, Ron Odell, Jack Linehan and John Bailey by 24 - 9. The consolation was the warm welcome we received, and the friendly sporting attitude of all concerned; a good morning's bowling enjoyed by all.  We have 1 more match to play to finish the season and that is at home against the leaders San Miguel Moors.  With La Siesta Wasps hot on our heels we have to do well on this last match, so no pressure then Team Horadada! On Wednesday we played the final match in the VCL League at home to Country Bowls Herons.  We only managed to win on one discipline and that was the Gents Singles represented by John Jukes.  John played well and held his own throughout the match taking it 21 – 15.  The rinks ended up a draw which was a just result as both teams played some crackin’ woods winning only 1 shot on most ends and both sides getting a 2 and a 3.  This was a hard fought match played by: Irene Graham, David Miles, Roy Thomson and Bryan Eatough 12 shots each. I have to mention our Trips represented by Peter Davis, Les Davies and Terry Hucknall.  Once again, this was a hard fought match with our Guys just losing by 1 shot 11 – 10.  Disappointing, but very well played. After being promoted last year we knew we were in for a rough ride playing against tough opposition but in saying that to finish 4th in the table is a good result considering the size of our club.  A huge thanks to all who participated – players, reserves, markers and not forgetting the Club Captain Fred Trigwell and Vice Captain Allan Miller. Horadada offers a warm welcome to new or experienced bowlers, and provides the necessary equipment.  Our roll-up days for this friendly club are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings.  Please contact Fred Trigwell on 659139129 for more information. Monte Mar Bowls and Social Club Sponsored by The Belfry, The Pub, Bowling Abroad, Avalon, Lounge D and Rogers Monday 18th June Monte Mar Torros v Country Bowls Badgers After the long drive to Country Bowls the Torros had a disappointing result winning on only two rinks. We done to the two winning rinks of Julia Hamilton, Iain Sheridan and skip Joan Harding, Howie Williams, Joe Ridley and skip Diane Ridley. Shots Torros 95 – 99 Badgers. Points Torros 4 – 10 Badgers. Wednesday 20th June Monte Mar Lords v Greenlands Jasmine A tough match against the Jasmines at Greenlands. Only winning on one rink well done to Wendy Sheridan, Rod Chamberlain and skip Dave Melville. Shots Lords 62 – 93 Jasmine Points Lords 2 – 10 Jasmine Monday 25th June Monte Mar Torros v San Luis Hercules A great performance by the Torros in there last game of the season against second in the league Hercules. The Torros won on five rinks and losing by only three shots on our losing rink. With one match left for some clubs only Country Bowls can match our points total but they will need to win 14 – 0 and by more than seventy shots to pip the Torros for the league title. Well done to everyone who has played for the Torros during the season. Shots Torros 115 – 75 Hercules Points Torros 12 – 2 Hercules Wednesday 27th June Monte Mar Lords v San Miguel Deputies Away to San Miguel for the last VCL match, the lords won on two rinks. Well done to Pauline Woodfine (singles) John Hunt and Jack Burrell skip. A big thank you to all who played for the Lords during the season. Shots Lords 71 – 84 Deputies Points Lords 4 – 8 Deputies For further information about Monte Mar Bowls and Social Club check out our website  www.montemarbowls.com or email us at [email protected]. We are also on Facebook. Quesada Bowls Club by Dee Stephenson This week the Lancasters played at San Luis. As the season is coming to a close, they went in with all guns blazing and came away with 3 winning rinks against tough opponents! Well done John Cleal, Ian Forbes & Jacqui Johnston;  Mel Highland, Peter Farrell & Peter Bradbury and Claire Dye, George Kershaw & Abby Benson. Another 6 points for the Lancasters. Next week, at home against Emerald Isle Victors, its all to play for in order to avoid relegation. The Blenheims are hot on the heels of San Luis with equal points at the top of the league but San Luis just edging ahead on shot difference. On a very hot day against San Miguel Christians, the Blenheims kept their cool and won 5 rinks, only just losing by 2 shots on the 6th rink. A great victory for the Blenheims with a win of 12-2 points. Watch this space for the race to the top of the league next week!! And theres plenty of tension in the VCL league as well! The Lions started the day 10 points behind San Luis with 12 points available to decide the winner of the League. Unfortunately the task proved impossible - both the San Luis singles players winning their games, which means that San Luis has won the title. Well done to the winning rink - Derek Sale, Carol Broomfield, Caroline Smyth & Jason Prokopowycz and to the men’s pairs Del Toozer and John Smyth who drew on their rink. The Cheetahs played their final match of the season away at La Siesta. It was a particularly hot and humid day and unfortunately one of the Cheetahs members had to retire so the men’s pairs couldn’t finish their game. Meanwhile the Cheetahs had wins in both the mens and ladies singles by John and Dee Stephenson. The day finished with a celebration lunch at the nearby Gran China restaurant where they were joined by their colleagues QBC Tigers. With a bye for the last week of the season The Tigers finished overall winners of the league by 11 points - fantastic result! This means that the Tigers will be promoted to Division 2 of the VCL next season. Congratulations and very well done! Quesada Bowls Club is sponsored by Spanish Life Properties https://spanishlifepropertiessl.com Vistabella Bowls Report With Lynne Bishop SA Spitfire League Greenways away to the Emerald Isle Victors. The last game is on Monday ...good luck Greenways. VCL..The Vikings, after a poor start to the season sitting at the bottom of the league showed an improvement in the last few games to finish a respectable third, their last game was at home v San Miguel Sheriffs who were fighting for league survival, they finished with a draw of six points each. The Vikings had two wins and the overall shots. Charlie Watkins & Gary Thorpe won the Pairs 22-10 and Lynne Bishop, Jeff Neve & Carol Thorpe won the Triples 19-12.  Shots, VB 84(6) - 81(6) SM. The Saxons played their final game at the Emerald Isle where they won the Ladies Singles 21-9 well done Maggie Furness and also to the Rinks team of Mike Irwin, Neil Burrows, Barbara & Arthur Brown 22-11. Costa Blanca South Bowls Roundup – 16 April 18
Country Bowls Club A fantastic start for Country Bowls Badger’s on Monday, we couldn’t have hoped for better. We played against El Rancho and they were certainly put to the test. Congratulations to all the players, a tremendous team effort. The scores are as follows; Rink 1 – B Nokes, D Jiggins & A Bryce. 28 – 6, Rink 2 – L Freeman, G Richardson & G Paylor. 30 – 10, Rink 3 – L Bryce, B Jiggins & G Ponsford. 32 – 9, Rink 4 – S Hempstead, P Emmett & J Mallet. 22 – 16, Rink 5 – N West, R Emmett & P Warrington, Rink 6 – G Eggleton, D Smith & J Hassell. 36 – 8, Total points 14 – 0. Brenda Jiggins and Geoff Paylor won the men’s and ladies singles while Gary Ponsford and Linda Freeman held a strong lead right through to the last three ends in the pairs but Greenlands came in strong at the end for a win. Lynne Bryce, Derek Jiggins and Pat and Ray Emmett in the rinks were jousting for lead all the way through but Greenlands took the spoils for another win. Graham Richardson, John Mallet and Andy Bryce in the triples had a hard game and were overcome by the home team in a deserved win on the day. While the total shots were close, the overall went to Greenlands with a final score of 8 – 4 . For more information on Country Bowls Club please visit our website www.countrybowlsmurcia.com. Our 1st Harrier League match of the season, on Monday, was a little bit of a disaster as far as the score went; Country Bowls took all the points and deserved them. We were outplayed, but we did have a good time, which is the main thing. On Wednesday our VCL team were at home to La Siesta and had a splendid match, taking all the points with the home advantage. Makes you glow a little, doesn’t it? Ladies singles: Sheila Cox 21-10. Gents singles: David Whitworth 21-11. Pairs: Sheila Cooper and Carolyn Harris 22-15. Horadada Bowls Club by Irene Graham On Saturday 7th April Horadada were represented in the Les McCracken tournament at Emerald Isle. This is an invitation event where 7 different Clubs provide a rink to play against each of 7 rinks from Emerald Isle. Each game was over 4 ends with 2 points going to each winner and 1 point for a draw. Our rink of Linda Hier, John Jukes, Jeff Hier and Barry Evans finished a very credible 2nd on 10 points having won 4, drawn 2 and lost only 1. This was only 1 point behind the winners Vistabella. Because of our better shot difference things could have been even better had the opposition skip not drawn shot with the very last wood of the last end of the last game thus giving us only a draw. Still that’s bowls! On Monday we played the first of the Hurricane Division matches at home against Emerald Isle Vulcans.  After a very hard fought match, during which, on the majority of rinks, fortunes swung back and forth, we managed to win on four rinks gaining 10 points to Emerald Isle’s 4.  The results were as follows: Pat Patton, Wayne Jackson and Brian Patton 15 – 12, Margaret Odell, Linda Heir and Terry Hucknall 13 – 10, Jeff Heir, Fred Trigwell and Barry Evans 23 – 9, David Miles, Roy Thomson and John Bailey 22 – 19. The overall shots were 99 – 88 so congratulations to every member of the team, and let's hope we can emulate last season and win this division as well!! Wednesday’s match was the VCL League at home to San Miguel Deputies. There was some great bowling from both sides, and it could have gone either way, but the turning point was the fours getting 5 shots on the last end, and the trips winning by three shots on the last end which gave us the overall shots and 8 points to San Miguel’s 4.  The results of our winning rinks were as follows: Gents Singles -  John Jukes 21 – 11, Triples – Carol Linehan, Jack Linehan and Barry Evans 15 – 12 Rinks – George Burrage, Roy Thomson, Bryan Eatough and Terry Hucknall 23 – 16. The overall shots were 77 – 74. Once again congratulations to all our players and thanks to Fred Trigwell and Alan Miller for marking duties. On Saturday 14th April 4 of our players are representing Wales in the 4 Nations competition to be held at Monte Mar. We wish them all good luck and good bowling. Horadada offers a warm welcome to new or experienced bowlers, and provides the necessary equipment.  Our roll-up days for this friendly club are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings.  Please contact Fred Trigwell on 659 139 129 for more information. SAN LUIS BOWLS CLUB with Sheila Cammack On Saturday 7th we held our annual Presentation Dinner at Casa Ventura. For those who had won, or were finalists, in the club championships the presentation of awards was a bonus. For everyone else there was an enjoyable evening with a tasty meal, good company and lively entertainment for those who were energetic enough to get up and dance! We hope that our winning club representatives all have the same success in the Champion of Champions Tournament hosted by San Luis (first 3 days) & Quesada (all 7 days) from 16th to 22nd April. Friday 13th VCL: SL Hawks were badly mauled at home by the Quesada Tigers. Fortunately Ros Holmes took charge of her singles match, picking up 3 shots on the last end (not needing her last bowl) to win 21-16. Congratulations to Martin Foulcer, Mike Regan, Gary & Carol Thorpe for winning the Les McCracken tournament last weekend at the Emerald Isle. SAL Summer Enterprise league saw our Greenways team go down six wins to two against the Christians at San Miguel. It was the first game for our new squad so things will get better... The two winning teams were Mike Irwin, Martin Foulcer & Eric Bishop 30-11 and Lin Watkins, Bill Corbishley & Peter Whitehall 20-13. Shots, VB 94(4) - 118(10) S.M. VCL. Hard games this week with both the Vikings and the Saxons playing very strong sides. The Saxons at home against San Luis managed two wins from the Men’s Singles Martin Foulcer 21-15 and the Triples Neil Burrows, Stuart Allman & Brian Dunn 14-12. Shots, VB 71(4) - 91(8) SL. The Vikings still shell shocked from their big defeat at San Luis last week suffered the same fate at Quesada this week. Nil wins again but that didn’t reflect on how well the team played, Men’s Singles and the Triples only lost on the very last end and the rinks team led the way until the last couple of ends...should have been six points but was not to be! Shots, VB 84(0) - 108(12) Q. A short break now while the Champion of Champions are being played, good luck to all our representatives.
