Choosing the Perfect Standalone Bathtub in Singapore
Are you on the quest for the epitome of relaxation and elegance in your bathroom? Look no further than a standalone bathtub in Singapore. Elevate your bathing experience and transform your space into a sanctuary of indulgence.
Tumblr media
Selecting the Ideal Standalone Bathtub
When it comes to standalone bathtubs, Singapore offers a plethora of options to suit every taste and style. From modern designs to classic freestanding tubs, the choices are endless. Consider the following factors to guide your selection:
1. Material Matters
Opt for a bathtub crafted from high-quality materials such as acrylic, cast iron, or stone resin. These materials not only ensure durability but also contribute to a sophisticated aesthetic.
2. Design Elegance
Choose a design that complements your bathroom's overall theme. Whether it's a sleek, contemporary look or a vintage charm, the right standalone bathtub can be a focal point that ties the entire space together.
3. Size and Space Considerations
Evaluate the dimensions of your bathroom to find a standalone bathtub that fits seamlessly. Balancing luxury with practicality ensures that your bathing haven doesn't compromise on comfort or functionality.
Benefits of a Standalone Bathtub
1. Aesthetic Appeal
Standalone bathtubs exude a timeless charm and sophistication that can elevate the visual appeal of any bathroom. Their standalone nature allows for creative placement, turning them into a striking centerpiece.
2. Spa-Like Experience
Immerse yourself in a spa-like experience within the confines of your home. Standalone bathtubs offer ample space to unwind and enjoy a relaxing soak, providing a retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
3. Versatility in Placement
Unlike built-in tubs, standalone bathtubs offer versatility in placement. Position it near a window for a scenic view, or make it the focal point in the center of the room. The flexibility adds a touch of personalization to your bathing space.
Transforming Your Bathroom Oasis
Now that you've chosen the perfect standalone bathtub, it's time to enhance the ambiance further. Consider these additional tips to transform your bathroom into a true oasis:
1. Ambient Lighting
Install soft, ambient lighting to create a tranquil atmosphere. This can be achieved through pendant lights, wall sconces, or even LED strips strategically placed around the bathtub.
2. Plush Towels and Robes
Invest in high-quality, plush towels and robes to enhance the overall luxurious feel. Opt for neutral colors to maintain a serene and sophisticated look.
3. Aromatherapy Touch
Introduce aromatherapy elements such as scented candles or essential oil diffusers. Choose calming scents like lavender or eucalyptus to promote relaxation during your bath.
Conclusion
With the right standalone bathtub and thoughtful design elements, your bathroom can transcend its utilitarian purpose and become a haven of tranquility. Elevate your bathing experience, indulge in luxury, and transform your daily routine into a ritual of relaxation.

Fan Ho
Fan Ho (Chinese: 何藩 ) 8 October 1931 – 19 June 2016) was a Chinese photographer, film director, and actor. From 1956, he won over 280 awards from international exhibitions and competitions worldwide for his photography.
Photography career
Fan Ho was born in Shanghai in 1931, and emigrated with his family to Hong Kong in 1949. At the outbreak of war in 1941, Ho's parents were stranded in Macau for several years and Ho was left in the care of a family servant. Ho began photographing at a very young age with a Brownie which his father had left at home, and later with a Rolleiflex twin-lens reflex camera his father gave him at the age of 14. Largely self-taught, his photos display a fascination with urban life, explored alleys, slums, markets and streets. Much of his work consists of candid photographs of the street vendors and children only a few years younger than himself. He developed his images in the family bathtub and soon had built up a significant body of work, chronicling Hong Kong in the 1950s and 1960s as it was becoming a major metropolitan centre. Ho would use the same Rolleiflex K4A throughout his career.
Upon seeing Ho's work for the first time in 2006, gallery owner Laurence Miller commented that "[they] felt like direct descendants of the Bauhaus, yet they were made in Hong Kong. They were abstract and humanistic at the same time."
Ho was a Fellow of the Photographic Society of America, the Royal Photographic Society and the Royal Society of Arts in England, and an Honorary Member of the Photographic Societies of Singapore, Argentina, Brazil, Germany, France, Italy and Belgium. Ho was named one of the "Top Ten Photographers of the World" by the Photographic Society of America between 1958 and 1965.
"Approaching Shadow", 1954 《陰影》
"Approaching Shadow" (Chinese: 陰影) was one of Ho's most famous works. He asked a cousin to pose by a wall at Queen's College in Causeway Bay and added a diagonal shadow in the darkroom to symbolize that "her youth will fade away" since "everyone has the same destiny". A print of "Approaching Shadow" sold for a record HK$375,000 in 2015.
Film career
Ho was a Hong Kong film director and actor.
He joined Shaw Brothers in 1961 to develop his career in cinema. He started as a continuity assistant in the movie The Swallow (1961) and moved on to act in several movies for Shaw. Ho played the Monk, Tripitaka, in the lavish Shaw Brothers adaption of Journey to the West four-picture cycle of films. Ho became disillusioned with Shaw's revenue-driven formula, and sought creative relief in photography and in other studios.
During the early 1960s he also produced a series of independent short films, the first of which, Big City Little Man (大都市 小人物; 1963, 30 min), won the "Honor Award Certificate" from the Japan International Film Festival in 1964.
Ho left Shaw Brothers in 1969 to develop his career as a director, making over 20 films with various studios in Hong Kong and Taiwan. He has had three films in the "Official Selection" of the International Film Festivals of Cannes, Berlin and San Francisco; and five of his films have been selected in the "Permanent Collection" of the National Film Archives of Taiwan and Hong Kong. As well as his independent film work he worked in erotic cinema (Category III films), with such films as Adventure in Denmark (1973), The Girl with the Long Hair (1975) and Temptation Summary (1990).
According to Mark Pinsukanjana, director of Modernbook Gallery in San Francisco, CA, his debut feature, Lost (1969), was Ho's favourite.
He also served on the jury of the Golden Horse Film Festival and Awards Festival and Hong Kong Film Award.[citation needed]
Post-retirement career
Sotheby's Hong Kong Gallery Fan Ho Exhibition in 2017
Ho's wife and children emigrated to San Jose, California in 1979 to pursue a university education. and he followed in 1995 after retiring from cinema. Restless in retirement, Ho's health began to decline until his family suggested that he pursue photography again. Rather than using modern equipment and taking photographs locally in the San Francisco Bay Area, Ho went through his old negatives from Hong Kong and began showing his portfolio to local galleries.
He exhibited slides of his photographs, some of which were in the permanent collection at SFMOMA, at the 1998 New Asian Cinema Festival, which was screening his 1988 film Carnal Desire at the 4 Star Theater in San Francisco. A chance meeting with Mark Pinsukanjana in 1999 led to Ho being featured at Pinsukanjana's Modernbook Gallery in Palo Alto in 2000, his first solo exhibition since the 1960s,and in 2001, and Ho's films and photographs continued to be shown at festivals hosted at the 4 Star. Ho's daughter credits the first Palo Alto exhibition in 2000 with restoring Ho's confidence and happiness.
Modernbook went on to stage his vintage work at photoLA in January 2006, and upon seeing his photographs of Hong Kong, fellow gallery owner Laurence Miller was moved to acquire 26 prints and put on a solo exhibit for Ho in New York City later that year. Ho would go on to publish a new monograph, Hong Kong Yesterday in 2006 after receiving international attention for this early work. By compositing old negatives, Ho continued to produce new prints of scenes that have now vanished from modern Hong Kong. Many of the resulting composited prints were published for the first time in his final monograph A Hong Kong Memoir in 2014, following exhibits of the same title at Modernbook in summer 2011 and from December 2014 to January 2015.
He died in San Jose on 19 June 2016 of pneumonia at the age of 84. Posthumously, thirty-two photographs taken in 1950s Hong Kong as well as related objects, including his Rolleiflex camera and an early book, Thoughts on Street Photography, were exhibited at Sotheby's Hong Kong gallery in the last half of June 2017. A new monograph, Portrait of Hong Kong, was published in June 2017 to coincide with the exhibition.
Portrait of Hong Kong 《念香港人的舊》contains 153 new street photographs which were selected from 500 negatives chosen by Ho before he died in 2016. After his death, the surviving family members spent about a year completing the project, together with support from Sarah Greene (Blue Lotus Consultancy) and WE Press (香港人出版). 20 quotable excerpts from Ho's earliest book, Thoughts on Street Photography 《街頭攝影叢談》, were included. These 153 photographs provide not only glimpses of Hong Kong in the 1950s and 1960s but also recall the indomitable spirit of the people at the time. This body of realistic street photographs were never highly recognized during 1950s and 1960s, despite being Ho's favorites, as quoted in Ho's reply to Sarah Greene during one of her visits to Ho in early 2016.

A 20-Year-Old HDB Maisonette That Was Transformed into a Cool Nest for Two
This home has a dance studio and a bedroom that’s twice the size of a regular one.
After its renovation, this Hougang HDB Maisonette, which was previously a worn-out, empty apartment, now has a cosy, serene atmosphere that envelops its surroundings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(How the living room looked like, pre-renovation)
According to Fifth Avenue Interior’s Royston Ho, who worked with fellow designer Cerine Wee on this home, the entire HDB flat was renovated to better suit the owners’ lifestyle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The living room was transformed by adding glass casement doors that separate it from the balcony outside. New vinyl flooring was also installed to replace the original floor tiles.
Tumblr media
For the living room furniture, simple pieces, such as a modular sofa and a small study table, were chosen to keep the layout uncluttered.
Tumblr media
On the other hand, the kitchen was renovated more extensively. A kitchen island was built, which allow the owners to use the space as a ‘office-style’ break area.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the second floor, there’s a dance studio that was specially created for the female homeowner who is a pole-dancing enthusiast.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The master bedroom was built by connecting two smaller bedrooms; one half of the room is use as sleeping area, while the other half is a cosy corner for movie nights.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The master en suite is a combination of two bathrooms as well. “Combining both of them was a challenge, because we had to figure out how to fit in a large bathtub and ensure the waterproofing would work,” says Royston.
Tumblr media
Finally, the common bathroom, which was originally a utility area, was given a new wall-hung toilet bowl, along with cool industrial-style fittings for an edgy look.

What does the beautiful, functional bathroom of the future look like? Does it have expensive tiles and a massive bathtub? Does it feature fixtures created to conserve water and reduce bills?
Singapore interior designers have their specific visions when it comes to bathroom design. There isn’t a single answer to the question what’s trendy right now. Several bathroom design trends have gained traction in 2019 and it looks like they’re here to stay.
Unusual Colours for the Bathroom
What colour palettes are most typical for bathroom projects? You’ll probably think of white, beige, blue and black at the top of your head.
These colours probably account for 95 per cent of the bathroom design executions. A new trend, however, is bringing some diversity into this part of the apartment.
Colourful bathrooms are becoming more common in Singapore as home owners are looking for something brighter and a bit more exciting than the standard neutral palettes.
Splashes of orange, red and purple can easily be incorporated in the design through the selection of the right tiles. The creative use of lights in the bathroom can also change the ambiance and bring some unusual colour to the interior.
Countertops featuring different kinds of glazes can also be used to have a bright focal point in an otherwise neutral room. Don’t settle for what’s typical and readily available. As more and more people are looking for colourful executions, the number of available products and accessories in unusual tones is bound to grow on the Singaporean market.
Floating Vanities
Typical vanities are solid and they reach the bathroom floor. Singapore interior designers, however, have started looking for more streamlined and innovative solutions. Thus, the floating vanity became quite popular in 2019.
Floating vanities add an airy feel to the design of the bathroom and they’re also starting to gain traction in other parts of the house.
The good news is that the number of available options on the market is growing. Floating vanities are crafted from solid wood and some lighter materials like vinyl. The colour and texture combinations are also endless.
A floating vanity isn’t a designer favourite just because of its appearance. The fact that it doesn’t reach the floor makes cleaning a whole lot easier in the bathroom.
A Vintage Comeback
While modern designs are always a good choice, some old-school classics also maintain their appeal.
Vintage bathroom design has made a big comeback in 2019.
Gold and brass elements, as well as elaborate shower head or sink designs have returned to Singaporean homes. Warm tones and exposed plumbing fixtures add a bit of depth and dimension to the bathroom, making the space very inviting.
Traditional modern bathrooms feature greys and neutrals. Stainless steel and polished chrome are two of the most common finishes. Brass and copper elements come in stark contrast with the coldness of the greys and silvers. Such warm elements create beautiful focal points and accents, especially when they’re not overdone.
Interior designers also have the opportunity to play with multiple finishes – glossy, matt and even satin. A material that’s not typical and a fun finish –what’s not to love about this retro comeback with a modern twist?
High Tech Elements and Smart Bathrooms
Smart bathroom solutions became an important part of interior design in 2018. In 2019, one thing became obvious – these technologies are here to stay and they’ll become even more all-encompassing in the future.
In 2018, many Singaporean homes got smart toilets that control the water flow, offer automatic lid opening and even warm themselves up for a more pleasant experience. Such smart solutions have now been extended to other parts of the bathroom.
Intelligent shower thermostats, automated sinks and built-in deodorisers are all available on the market. A bathroom can easily be transformed into a personalised spa that can “predict” the needs of the homeowner and offer an experience that’s entirely in line with these preferences.
Bathroom Art
As already mentioned, the standard bathroom format is getting a major makeover in 2019.
Many interior designers have started looking for innovative ways to make bathrooms more fun and inviting. Thus, they’ve introduced elements that aren’t typical for the bathroom into this space.
Artwork in the bathroom is a cool trend that we hope is here to stay. It adds a lot of fun and excitement to a space that tends to be way too neutral and personality-free.
Photography, paintings and sculptures have the power to create a specific room and brighten even the most mundane room in the apartment. The only thing to keep in mind here is that the respective piece of art will have to go through moisture treatment in order to remain in a good condition for years to come.
Unusually Shaped Tiles
A final fun bathroom interior design trend that deserves to be mentioned focuses on one of the most important products utilised in the creation of a beautiful décor – the tile.
Tiles are crafted from many materials and they can feature both beautiful colours and patterns. One thing, however, remains unchanged and that is the shape of the tile. They’re either rectangular or scale and there isn’t a whole lot of variety.
Singaporean homes have started witnessing the introduction of funkier tiles than ever before. Long, skinny tiles became a thing in 2019.
Many sizes and widths are already available on the market. These allow for the creation of intricate pattern and they also produce a very beautiful texture that can’t be achieved when larger tiles are being used.
You can have fun with the bathroom décor and break the rules of interior design to personalise that space.
Home Guide embraces new trends that result in a more functional, more beautiful and happier décor. We’ve worked on numerous residential and commercial bathroom projects through the years, focusing on both innovative and vintage trends.

What to Consider Before Purchasing a Unit Among the Upcoming EC Launch in 2022?
Tumblr media
Singapore is the country where land is deemed as precious as gold. Some can afford landed residential properties, while most of the population still depends on public housing units offered by HDB. For young professionals, working residents, and those who can afford more than HDBs but find landed properties too pricey, buying an executive condominium is indeed a solid option.
However, acquiring an EC in Singapore isn't always all about the building's area and features. There are several factors to consider before purchasing a condo in Singapore if you want to make one of your most important financial investments worth it. If you are looking forward to the upcoming EC launch in 2022, this guide is for you.
Real Estate Market Timing
Before browsing online for available condominiums and the upcoming EC launch in 2022, it is wise to check the real estate market's current state. Yes, there's a proper time to get a property. Try purchasing a unit when the market is at its peak, and you will be surprised to find that you are paying more than what it's worth. As a common rule, the best time to buy a condo in Singapore is when transaction volume goes up while the price remains steady.
Project Developer
Not every condominium is created the same. Depending on the quality of materials used, structural design, and project developer, some are built to last a lifetime. In contrast, others will show signs of wear and tear within a couple of years. If you need a quality condominium unit, pick a developer with a proven track record.
Freedom of Space
Unlike landed residential properties that are large and spacious, condominiums are limited in floor area. And this certainly is one of the many factors to consider buying a condo in Singapore. If you desire freedom of space, you can still enjoy it by mindfully selecting the appropriate unit type. Moreover, new developments feature terrace-style balconies that you can use as additional space to expand your floor area within the unit.
Heat and Noise Pollution
This is one of the most often overlooked factors when purchasing a condo unit in Singapore; the heat and noise pollution can frustrate even the most tolerant buyer. Typically, agents will show you the unit at the most convenient time of the day, early morning or late afternoon when the sun isn't hot and when your neighbors are out sleeping or in the office.
To avoid annoying neighbors, lovely views turning into heating ovens, trucks, and buses causing undesired noise, it is best to tour the condo at various times of the day; this is especially true for units directly facing the sun located within major highways.
Amenities and Facilities
Although often used synonymously, amenities and facilities convey different meanings. Facilities are things that you and your guests can use, such as swimming pools, saunas, gyms, café, restaurants, etc.
On the other hand, amenities are conveniences within your unit, such as air-conditioning, internet access, cable, bathtub, patio, and the likes. Keep in mind that not all condominiums offer the same amenities and facilities. Although, remember that the more services there are in a condo, the more expensive they can get.
Building and Unit Maintenance
More commonly identified as maintenance fees, association dues are required payments made by unit owners to the building administrators. This payment is used to maintain the common facilities of the building and the individual units as well. Note that this is a mandatory payment that cannot be haggled, and it is made on top of your monthly home loan if you have one. When buying a Singapore condo, always go through the monthly maintenance fee because this is not standardized.

Discover the advantages of a waterproof mirror television and how it can enhance your lifestyle
Particoloured, moving objects and images displayed on surfaces such as walls or large white canvases have been implemented some decades ago to entertain people with picture slide shows and some movies, but who would have ever thought in those years that one day, you will be able to use a mirror to watch a television broadcast or as a smart device.
Nowadays, a waterproof mirror television is considered a popular item in the UK as it is specially designed to withstand humidity and moisture, and the UK with its above normal annual rainfall is certainly regarded as one of the world’s ‘moister’ countries, compared to others.
Using advanced technology, today's mirrors are multi-functional and no longer just an item used to reflect your own image. A good example is the new and innovative 13.3" smart mirror TV with built-in Health and Skin and Weight Applications from a well-known brand name.
This device allows consumers to watch television broadcasts while in the shower or bathtub, for example, but it can also be used like any other smart device to use different applications, watch a live stream or download music or movies. On top of that, it serves as a stylish finish for any room and when the screen is off, it displays like any other mirror.
The mirror television is suitable for any weather as the screen is equipped with special heating so that no condensate accumulates. When you buy a mirror or smart television from a trusted name in the technology industry, you will also receive a 12-month warranty.
It is easy to install a mirror TV. During installation, a mirror television set for the bathroom will be fixed against a wall or furniture niches and hinges are installed on the brackets. The moisture-free mirror television has the same performance characteristics as traditional TVs, namely excellent picture quality, great colour resolution, a wide viewing angle and a variety of features.
One of the best and most interesting features of the mirror television is its amazing integration function, which allows for the transmission of broadcast, while simultaneously serving as a mirror, which means the device can be used as a mirror for facial care (for example, a man can shave and a woman can apply her makeup) while staying abreast with the latest televised news.
Whether to buy a waterproof mirror television for the bathroom or not and which model to buy, ultimately depends on the interests and abilities of each individual family and modern operating equipment offers at affordable prices, but many consumers will agree that this innovative device is a great addition to any room.
If you are interested in purchasing a mirror television in the UK, you must know where to shop and choose a high-quality product. In the competitive world which we live in, competition is fierce and as a result, there are many counterfeits of original products which are not the well-known brands you may know, and these products usually offer more attractive prices.
You should therefore be aware of the fact that the market is flooded with cheap imitations, but these products probably offer no guarantee and can cost you hundreds of pounds in the long run. Rather shop online from established and trusted retailers where you should receive a 12-month warranty with your purchase. Also, make sure the waterproof mirror television you choose is IP65 certified and find out if the company you buy the product from, offers free delivery in the UK.
With a mirror television, there will also no longer be a war between family members over who takes charge of the remote control and you can watch your own TV shows or anything you prefer, in the privacy and tranquillity of your own bathroom.
About us: Sarason Style and Technology is the UK's number one waterproof LED television retailer and the most trusted technology names in the country. With more than a decade of experience in the bathroom TV and outdoor TV industry, their team of experts has the skills and knowledge that customers need when choosing a waterproof TV. Casa Etérea is a mirrored off-grid cabin on the slopes of the Palo Huérfano volcano
Solar panels and harvested rainwater power this mirrored holiday home by first-time architect Prashant Ashoka, which was designed to be self-sufficient and in harmony with its surroundings.
Casa Etérea is nestled into the slopes of an extinct volcano in the Los Picachos highlands, near the Mexican city of San Miguel de Allende, and surrounded by 10,000 hectares of rugged, unspoiled nature.
Casa Etérea features a mirrored facade
The structure of the 75-square-metre cabin was made from local materials, in line with Ashoka's aim to design the retreat as if it was "birthed from the mountainside itself".
Its foundations are formed from volcanic rocks collected on-site and its walls from bricks that were made locally and finished with micro-cement, before being clad in mirrors.
It is situated on the slopes of the Palo Huérfano volcano
"While there is nothing new about the concept of mirrored buildings, Casa Etérea does something different by putting sustainability first," Ashoka told Dezeen.
"I hold self-sustaining architecture in high reverence, especially in our time of climate crisis, and believe that off-grid homes represent our ultimate integration with the environment."
The V-shaped building holds a small courtyard at its centre
The cabin is formed of two rectilinear volumes that meet to form a wide V-shape, framing an internal courtyard with a patio and a small swimming pool clad in mosaic tiles.
The side of the building that faces the Palo Huérfano volcano is finished with panoramic glass doors and designed by Ashoka to act like a "theatre to nature", while the exterior facade that faces the valley beyond is completely shrouded in mirrored panels.
Beyond affording privacy to the guests, this allows the structure to act like a seamless extension of the environment, reflecting the changing light of the days and seasons.
A small swimming pool is finished in mosaic tiles
"Light becomes a structural element of this design, distorting the perspective of where the observer begins and the landscape ends," said the designer.
"I wanted this interplay of light and scale to evoke a deep sense of awe for the wild and to beg questions about our role as stewards in the preservation of our ecosystems."
The bathroom area is fringed by floor-to-ceiling windows
According to Ashoka, the design was informed by the idea of emotional architecture, which was coined by seminal Mexican architect Luis Barragán to describe a style of building that encourages quietude and introspection.
With the aim of leaving the surrounding nature largely undisturbed, a patterned, ultraviolet coating was applied to the mirrors, marking the structure out for passing birds to prevent collisions while remaining invisible to humans.
Ceiling beams are left exposed throughout the interior
The cabin is solar-powered and harvests rainwater, and the orientation of the site itself helps to naturally regulate the indoor air temperature and conserve energy.
"By positioning the house to take in full morning light up until noon, the sun naturally heats the space," Ashoka explained. "This heat is then trapped by double-glazed, insulated glass sliding doors keeping the temperature regulated throughout the day."
Panoramic sliding doors open up from the bedroom onto the courtyard
The interior, styled by local studio NAMUH, features an open-plan layout with exposed ceiling beams and natural, tactile finishes of stone, wood, jute and leather.
A copper bathtub sits next to the bed and, like the rest of the bathroom area, is left entirely exposed to the views from the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Ashoka is originally a photographer and writer who emigrated from Singapore to Mexico in 2017. He built Casa Etérea over the course of three years, together with a team of six collaborators, despite having no background in architecture or design.
Mirror cladding is proving to be a popular choice among architects of remote retreats, who want the surrounding nature to remain unspoiled.
Casa Etérea is Ashoka's first architecture project
Chinese firms Wiki World and Advanced Architecture Lab recently designed a series of 18 mirror-clad timber cabins, set in the snowy mountains outside Yichang in Hubei province.
And in the US, designer Tomas Osinsk and film producer Chris Hanley worked together to create a mirrored house near Joshua Tree National Park that resembles a New York skyscraper laid on its side.

Expert Design Notes: How to Use Marble in the Bathroom
NOVEMBER 20, 2018
If there’s one material that instantly elevates a bathroom from functional to luxurious, it’s marble. This polished stone has been used in bathrooms for many years because it’s both sturdy and beautiful. Plus, there’s a marble color and style for everyone. The following design tips will help you understand the most popular types of marble — and how to incorporate them into your bathroom.
Options for a Marble Bathroom
Using Marble in the Bathroom
Marble can be the primary design element in a bathroom. This is the case in a New York apartment showcased by Architectural Digest’s Allix Cott. The bathroom features marble across the walls, floor, countertop and backsplash. Chrome fixtures and black elements add a sophisticated touch.
Singapore Home Decor writer Domenica Tan shows how marble floors and walls can be paired with a glass shower to add space to a bathroom. When the marble used on a shower wall and floor isn’t obstructed by a shower curtain or opaque shower doors, light has more surface area to bounce around on. This makes the space brighter and more inviting.
See too how marble can be used uniquely in the shower by considering a project by Salt Design Co. Led by interior designer Sarah Brady, this custom shower installation uses small gold-flecked tiles to create a fish scale-inspired pattern. There’s also a horizontal built-in shelf that provides accessible storage while adding an interesting design element to the space.
The durable and resilient qualities of marble make it a great choice for bathroom flooring, too, Ozge Tirpan at marble supplier Sefa Stone notes. Marble floors are resistant to water damage and so will look new for a long time. Since each marble stone is unique, marble flooring can make a bathroom look more authentic as well. And, different cuts of marble can be assorted and mix-matched on the floor for a truly custom look.
Enjoying the long-lasting beauty of marble will require maintenance, however. Bernard Fournier says that marble must be sealed in order to maintain its appearance. Sealing marble with a slip-resistant finish can also make it safer, since it is normally quite slippery when wet.
Marble Countertops and Sinks
Pairing Marble with Wood and Metal
Decorating an entire bathroom in marble can sometimes feel too stark and cold. Fortunately, marble plays well when balanced with warmer, natural materials like wood. A bathroom showcased by interior designer Kylie Mawdsley shows how a marble, cool gray paint and a medium tone wood vanity work together in harmony. The wood in this bathroom also helps adds a homey and cozy touch to the cooler elements in the space.
Wood and marble also create a compelling contrast that’s equal parts elegant and rustic, sophisticated and approachable. According to La Maison Jolie founder Rani Engineer, marble inlaid in wood is a popular trend that many bathroom and kitchen designers are experimenting with.
White carrara marble is especially common in interior designs, she adds. This is because carrara often has silver and gold veining (the naturally-occurring color deposits in the stone), which compliments metal fixtures in the bathroom.
Aside from wood, the most popular marble pairing materials today include brick and metal, according to Mar Esteve Cortés at The Size, a surfacing material distributor. While silver metals exude a cooler feel, gold metals give a cozy and inviting to the space. The most popular trending combination for bathrooms is marble and copper.
Bronze is often paired with marble for a modern, sophisticated look. A freestanding tub is paired with bronze and marble, writer Warren Singh-Bartlett at Wallpaper notes. The white and gray marble flooring in this luxury hotel bathroom in Kuwait is complemented with contemporary mashrabiya screens, which provide a delicate privacy wall around the bathtub.
When tiles need to be repaired, grout can be a creative method, adding a decorative metallic touch. Metallic grout creates a wow effect, interior designer Anna Lysik explains. It echoes the streaks and lines that are naturally occuring in marble. When installing new marble tiles, metallic grout can be used instead of black or white grout as well
