a shopping trip is the last thing you expected for your first mentorship with ane-san.
she hardly looks the frivolous type, you observe, even as she wears all those thick robes and ribbons and flower pins in her hair. "one's manner of dressing tells who you are without need for words."
first impressions, too, are important, especially in a large-scale organization like the mafia. you learn all these, little by little, with an earnest desire to do things right this time.
(you thought you already knew how to survive in this cruel world, until everything you know has been snatched from you.
it's why you accepted the black fedora offered to you, on bended knee.)
you enter an upscale boutique— the first of many, ane-san assures you— with a bowed head and both hands in your pockets. the suit jacket alone makes you think in numbers, as you wonder how many meals it can buy.
ane-san senses your guilt at once, bringing you back to your senses with an almost-imperceptible tap on your shoulder. "a full outfit for my associate here, please," she beckons to the assistant there. he meekly shows you the fitting room, and you feel yourself relax, just a bit.
you come out of there with the smallest-available three-piece suit in hand, swapping out the black vest for a wine-red one because you don't want to match outfits with the suicidal bastard. ane-san nods encouragingly, and you are proud of yourself for it.
("live not on the approval of others alone. always carry your own pride in your heart."
you start to change, too, little by little.)
you forget the hours as you visit more shops, your wallet thinning and your heart bursting. you wonder at how each bag and each box is both heavy and light at the same time— oh, clothes do make a man, you realize happily, trying not to cry.
the last place you visit carries accessories, too. the early sunset is distorted by the glass doors, and you blink—
that's when it catches your eye: a soft, black thing, with a sliver of a gem hanging from the thin buckle, reflecting the same sunset as if it beckons you to itself.
you find yourself touching it longingly before you know it. a soft squeak from the cashier brings you back to the present, and you bow your head again, shoving your hands in your pockets.
ane-san chuckles from behind. you slowly turn to her, ears and cheeks as flushed as your hair. she only smiles and nods back.
all at once, you forget you are an associate of the mafia, and ask for that choker like a child on christmas morning. that last purchase turns out to be the most expensive for the day, but the small box you now carry is your most prized possession of the day.
you can already imagine yourself, decked out in full regalia after today. "chin up, eyes forward. you're doing well."
a single tear leaks out this time. ane-san notices the way the fading sunlight glints off the trail down your cheek.
she holds you closer to her side this time, out in the open. "you must be tired. shall we have dinner?"
you blink back the rest of your happiness and nod in earnest. "yes, ma'am. i'm absolutely famished."
today, you decide, is the best day of your life, by far. and you promise, too, to grow into your own, into the best version of yourself you can be proudest of, bar none.

Kittery expands it's tap list. Woodland Farms Brewery will start pouring their "fine fermented products" on Thursday January 19th. Here's a little bit about their Grand Opening from their FB page. " Folks, it humbles me to say it, but Thursday January 19th we will officially open for business. Its been a long build out but I can't wait to share our beer with you all. Hours will be 1pm to 8pm on Thusday and Friday. We're super honored to have "Maine Man" playing on Friday evening as well from 6 to 8. Saturday we'll have a go at it from noon till 9pm to see what traffic is like on a full day, and Sunday we'll be there from noon till 6pm. Fedex/UPS willing we'll have 5oz samplers, 14oz samples and growlers available for: Prenderpils: 5.3% Irish Pilsner: Our Flagship pilsner. Hoppy, malty, light, dry and drinkable. Why's it Irish? BECAUSE I SAID SO! 216: A 6.4% IPL. 56 IBU with Lemondrop and Sorachi Ace hops (216 is the number of days it took to get my TTB approval) Second beer on the system brewed with the cicerone from York River Landing; Nick Evans. Much like Nick its larger than life and a damn good time. Cervesa Medico: a 5.3% Mexican lager. Another Flagship beer, this is excellent for Sunday's and the Pats game. Simple, but not to be discounted. Excellent session beer. Pearl hops. Dunnington: A classic canadian mild. 3.6% Light brown in color, low abv, full on flavor. Another beer at home with either the sportsball type folks, or a cèilidh of silly sots. UK Fuggle and EKG is this mild mannered denizen. The Cruikshank Crank: 5.6% Pale Ale This is a galaxy forward pale ale and was originally going to be just a calibration beer for the brewhouse. It came out freakin awesome so I'm so happy to share it will you all. This is a modern pale ale with Galaxy, Lemondrop and Azzaca hops in it. Backyard Scientist: 7.4% Our Flagship IPL. Designed to showcase eastern european yeast and malt with big american hop flavor. Just because we love lagers doesn't mean we do not love hops. CTZ, Cascade, Centennial, Columbus, Nelson, Citra and Warrior. ON DECK: Rowanbrau: 5.6% I got turned onto the Dortmunder Export style while working my way through "Brewing Classic Styles" by Jamil Zainascheff & John Palmer a few years ago. Researching the style, I found "Tasty" Mike McDole's Recipe on homebrewtalk.com and I just plain fell in love with this beer. I brewed his recipie many many times as a homebrewer and then tweaked it for my tastes and I'm so happy to share it with you all. Crisp and Dry, Malty and Hoppy, its just a classic balanced lager. Sportballer: 5.1% Oh, you like the sports? You like the beer? This light lager will get you though any game. Monroe: 5.3% West coast dry hopped oatmeal stout. Columbus and Simcoe in the dry hop create a unique nose over a silky and slightly dry oatmeal stout. Berliner? I just met her! : 3.9% Low abv, sour/tangy traditional german berliner weisse. Available with Mary Janes raspberry sauce, or more traditional woodruff syrup. If you've read this far, my goodness! Thanks and we look forward to seeing everyone for the coming years. sláinte mhaith!" You can find them at 306 route 1, suite C. Check out their Facebook page for more updates. See you there!
