Capture and Output Group Questions
Camera Sensors:
Charge-coupled device (CCD) – CCD (shortened for Charge-coupled device) was the first sensor to be used on a digital camera and was created in the 1970’s by Willard Boyle and George Smith. CCD sensors are known to be high quality and contain more pixels, they are commonly used for photographing images with low noise. CCD sensors tend to cost much more money to manufacture than other sensors and consume a huge amount of power than other sensors.
Electron-multiplying charge - coupled device (EMCCD) – A EMCCD sensor (shortened for Electron-multiplying charge – coupled device) provides much faster and more sensitive imaging than other sensors, this means they can be very useful for low-light imaging or even photon counting. They are back-illuminated and have very large pixels which increase sensitivity.
Complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) – CMOS sensors (shortened for Complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) were created in the 1950’s though only became comarative enough to be satisfactory for scientific imaging in 2009. Almost all smartphone cameras, digital cameras or imaging devices use a CMOS sensor. CMOS sensors are also very popular as they consume the least amount of power.
Back-illuminated (sCMOS) – sCMOS (Back-illuminated) sensors was first used by photometrics in 2016 on the Prime 95B camera. Camera’s using a sCMOS sensor usually help improve sensitivity and have high speeds alongside a large field of view.
Photographic Dynamic Range
The dynamic range shows the difference between the darkest and the lightest part of the subject. This takes a measurement of the range of light intensities from the shadows to the highlights – in low light conditions the dynamic range is small and on a sunny day the range is much higher. The dynamic range of a camera differs between cameras and sensors, and we can see this range by looking at the histogram. A dynamic range is important as it helps the photographer keep the correct exposure.
Tumblr media
Bit Depth
Bit depth relates to the amount of colour information in an image. You can use a bit depth from 1 bit to 16 bit. Bit depth is important as is affects the tonal and colour values of your image. Images with a bit depth of 8 would only have 256 shades of grey available whereas a bit depth of 16 could hold 65,536, this
means the higher the bit depth the more detail and colour there will be in an image.
Tumblr media
Digital Noise
Digital noise occurs when a photo taken has random pixels scattered across it. This usually happens when taking images in low light or using slow shutter speeds or even using high sensitivity modes. These pixels can appear as random dots or stains on the photograph like grain.
Types of Output
Digital photo process, Dye sublimation, Electrography, Inkjet, C-type and Giclee
Paper Types & Surfaces
Glossy paper – A smooth surface with no texture, it is very prone to glare.
Matte Paper – A textured surface that reduces glare unlike glossy paper. Cheaper than most paper types so very popular with photographers.
Satin Paper – A smooth surface that leaves your photo with a slightly glossy look.
Luster Paper – A textured surface, offers vivid colours without the glossy look.
