KUHN: SWAMP RABBITS WEEKLY #17
Tumblr media
Greenville hits the road to the Sunshine State BY: Jordan Kuhn, Greenville Swamp Rabbits GREENVILLE, SC - The Greenville Swamp Rabbits entered last week on the longest homestand of the season ahead of a road swing that would keep them away from the Bon Secours Wellness Arena due to Monster Jam and Cirque de Soleil. Three games featured top Kelly Cup contenders, and the other, a team that had given them fits all season long. Wednesday was the beginning of a rare losing streak for the top team in the South Division, as the Greenville Swamp Rabbits took it to them on Wednesday night. The night started sluggishly, but the second period completely changed the complexion of the game. Five-second period goals, including tallies from Nathan Perkovich, Karl El-Mir, two from Matt Marcinew and Mike Monfredo staked the Swamp Rabbits to a 5-2 lead after two periods. Jeremy Helvig was sharp all night for the Swamp Rabbits, as he made 34 saves in the win for Greenville. He held the Stingrays off the board in the first period, and during the Rays' third-period push. Friday saw a scorching hot Florida Everblades club in the midst of a massive winning streak come to town. Florida opened the game with a 2-0 lead, and the Swamp Rabbits found it difficult to mount a comeback against one of the best defensive teams in the league. Michael Pelech scored a power play goal to get within one, but the 'Blades pulled away. After two periods of play, Florida led 4-1. Perkovich, the former 'Blade, got Greenville within two, but Cam Johnson made 33 saves for the visitors, and Florida skated away with a 4-2 win over Greenville. Saturday was an unknown for both sides of the coin. It was the first and only matchup against the Utah Grizzlies, one of the top teams in the Mountain Division. The Grizzlies flexed their offensive muscle early with a 4-0 lead through 18 minutes. Pelech scored to end the first period, and that started the comeback. Greenville scored three unanswered goals and outshot the Grizzlies 20-5 in the second period in one of the most dominant 20-minute stretches of hockey the Swamp Rabbits have played all year. However, the comeback party came to an end at 17:37 of the third period, as a goal from Mitch Maxwell proved to be the game-winning goal in a 6-4 defeat at the hands of Utah. Sunday was a day of tasty revenge, to avenge the loss from the night prior. The Swamp Rabbits' devastating home offense returned in force in an absolutely dominant performance over the Atlanta Gladiators. Greenville toasted former teammate Chris Nell by shooting 29.0% on the day, and nine players posted multi-point efforts. The Swamp Rabbits never trailed in the game, and it was only tied once at 1-1. Greenville led 2-1 after one, 6-2 after two, and ended the game in a 9-3 win over their I-85 rivals down the road. The win was an appetizer to the Super Bowl, which kicked off just in time after the conclusion of the game at the Well. 1/29 vs South Carolina Stingrays - W 6-2 1/31 vs Florida Everblades - L 4-2 2/1 vs Utah Grizzlies - L 6-4 2/2 vs Atlanta Gladiators - W 9-3 UPCOMING GAMES Greenville Swamp Rabbits at Florida Everblades Friday, February 7 - 7:30 p.m. Listen — Watch Greenville Swamp Rabbits at Florida Everblades Saturday, February 8 - 7:00 p.m. Listen — Watch PLAYER OF THE WEEK Michael Pelech - 4 GP | 2 G - 7 A - 9 P Greenville's captain was the leading scorer in the ECHL over the past week and is nominated for ECHL Player of the Week. Over the week, he had two three-assist games, in both convincing wins for the Swamp Rabbits. In his 690 games in the ECHL, Pelech has scored 528 points (165 goals, 363 assists). RABBIT TAILS Much as Michael Pelech was one of the Utah Grizzlies' top scorers in franchise history, the team's leading scorer continues to climb the leaderboard in Greenville history. He passed Jordie Johnston and sits 8th in team scoring history with 105 points. He trails Sean Berkstresser by seven points (112). With the 2,708 fans that came to Sunday's game, the total attendance in the ECHL rose to 2,500,530 for the season. Jeremy Helvig's win on Sunday gave him 40 in his ECHL career and is tied for eighth in goalie wins (13). Karl El-Mir entered his stint as a Greenville Swamp Rabbit on a ten-game goal-scoring drought. He has scored three goals and an assist in his four games in the Upstate. Greenville's home offensive output has risen from 3.50 to start the week to 3.67 goals per game. Their 99 home goals rank second in the league behind Newfoundland and Allen's 111. Greenville's nine goals on Sunday were a season-high. It beat the previous season-high of eight, posted on November 15 in Norfolk. The Swamp Rabbits are now just one of three teams that are undefeated when leading after two periods of play (19-0-0), joining Brampton and Florida in that category. KUHN: (FRI) SWAMP RABBITS DROP DECISION TO EVERBLADES
Tumblr media
'Blades take a first-period lead, maintain an advantage BY: Jordan Kuhn, Greenville Swamp Rabbits BOXSCORE GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Greenville Swamp Rabbits cut the Florida Everblades' lead in half twice, but a 2-0 lead after the first period paced the visitors' attack as the Swamp Rabbits fell to Florida 4-2 on Friday night at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena. One special teams moment in the second period swayed the tide of the game for both sides of the coin. With a 5-on-3 in their pocket, the Swamp Rabbits took advantage. Michael Pelech tore into the Everblades' lead with a rebound goal on a shot by Patrick Bajkov. However, just over a minute later, a shorthanded goal took the wind out of Greenville's sails almost immediately. Hugo Roy pounced onto a turnover and broke down the wing. His initial shot was denied by Jeremy Helvig, but the puck squeaked through the pads, and Roy popped in the loose puck to re-establish the two-goal lead. Justin Auger added to the advantage and capped the scoring for the 'Blades at the 16:59 mark of the second period. Nathan Perkovich started the comeback early in the third period with a second chance opportunity off a blocked shot by Ryan Black, and the Swamp Rabbits outshot the Everblades 9-5 in the third period, but goaltender Cam Johnson made 33 saves to stave off the rest of Greenville's rally. Cody Sol and Logan Roe posted tallies in the opening period within six minutes to open the scoring. KUHN: SWAMP RABBITS WEEKLY #6
Tumblr media
Greenville approaches Thanksgiving mile marker in playoff contention BY: Jordan Kuhn, Greenville Swamp Rabbits GREENVILLE, SC - This week saw that a turnaround was needed after a bit of a slide, the Swamp Rabbits responded in kind with three wins in the four games this past week. While perhaps aided by a Norfolk team on a massive losing skid, Wednesday would lead you to believe otherwise. The Swamp Rabbits and Admirals traded goals back and forth, but eventually, Greenville took advantage of a mistake by a former teammate. Roman Ammirato turned the puck over just inside the line, and Patrick Bajkov led the two-on-one rush the other direction for the game-winning goal in a 4-3 win on a blustery Wednesday night. A few nights later, Greenville made it a no-doubter. The Swamp Rabbits scored three goals in the first period and never looked back. Kamerin Nault, Mason Baptista and Bajkov all netted tallies to extend the lead. The damage was further extended in the third period, when Rodrigo Abols posted a pair of goals, and Matt Marcinew and Michael Pelech added on in the 8-1 drubbing of the last place team in the South Division. A relatively unknown Indy Fuel club came to Greenville as the Swamp Rabbits were riding high on the offensive showcase they put forth the night before. The game was tied at one for all of 14 seconds, as at the 5:26 mark of the second period, Bajkov added his second of the night to get the lead back. Nathan Perkovich scored an insurance tally that ended up being the game winner. Jeremy Helvig made 42 saves, a career-high, to help cement the win, including his biggest glove save on Keoni Texeira in the final minute. Tied for the top spot in the South Division, the Florida Everblades closed out the busy week. Both teams were set to play their fourth game in five days, and the sluggishness was apparent. All Florida needed was a goal from Zach Magwood late in the first period, and a shutout from goaltender Cam Johnson, to seal the win. Ryan Bednard suffered his only loss of the weekend after winning both in Norfolk. 11/13 at Norfolk Admirals - W 4-3 11/15 at Norfolk Admirals - W 8-1 11/16 vs. Indy Fuel - W 3-2 11/17 vs. Florida Everblades - L 3-0 UPCOMING GAMES Greenville Swamp Rabbits at South Carolina Stingrays Tuesday, November 19 - 7:05 p.m. Listen — Watch College Night + Thirsty Thursday ($3 Beer) Greenville Swamp Rabbits vs. Jacksonville Icemen Thursday, November 21 - 7:05 p.m. (NOTE THAT THIS TIME HAS CHANGED FROM PRIOR SCHEDULING) Tickets — Listen — Watch Hockey Fights Cancer (Family 4 Pack) Greenville Swamp Rabbits vs. Atlanta Gladiators Friday, November 22 - 7:05 p.m. Tickets — F4P — Listen — Watch PLAYER OF THE WEEK Patrick Bajkov - 4 GP | 4 G - 2 A - 6 P Now the team leader in points, Patrick Bajkov's game has risen to a new height. The British Columbia native has taken games over with six multi-point efforts on the season. He had three of them this past week, including the game-winning overtime goal on Wednesday in Norfolk, and two key goals in the win over the Indy Fuel. Bajkov set a new season-high in points in 18 fewer games. He is shooting an outstanding 31.0% on the season, almost four times more than the league average. RABBIT TAILS Reassigned to Greenville early last week, Cliff Pu and Rodrigo Abols paid immediate dividends to the Swamp Rabbits. Pu posted a goal and five assists in four games last week, and Abols scored three goals and an assist in the same span. When leading heading into the room for intermission, the Swamp Rabbits have not lost. The team is 5-0-0 when leading after one, and 6-0-0 when leading after two. Jeremy Helvig made his first start for the Swamp Rabbits on Saturday, and made a career-high 42 saves in the effort. Helvig now has a career ECHL record of 28-9-4, a 2.36 GAA and a .918 save percentage. In the early going, Greenville does most of its damage in the second period (21 goals), but has its best goal differential (+4) in the third period (19-15). SOUTH DIVISION STANDINGS South Carolina Stingrays (11-1-0) - 22 pts Florida Everblades (11-4-0) - 22 pts Greenville Swamp Rabbits (8-7-1) - 17 pts Atlanta Gladiators (6-7-0) - 12 pts Orlando Solar Bears (4-7-2) - 10 pts Jacksonville Icemen (3-7-2) - 8 pts Norfolk Admirals (2-11-3) - 7 pts *standings as of 10:00 a.m. on November 18, 2019 Read the full article

KUHN: 'BLADES BLANK 'BITS
Tumblr media
Cam Johnson makes 32 saves in Florida's win BY: Jordan Kuhn, Greenville Swamp Rabbits BOXSCORE GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Greenville Swamp Rabbits, facing the fourth game in five days, saw their three-game winning streak come to an end. The visiting Florida Everblades rode the heights of the first goal of the game and never looked back in a 3-0 win over Greenville on Sunday afternoon at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Zach Magwood tallied twice for the 'Blades in their shutout win, the team's first of the season. It was the second time the Swamp Rabbits were blanked at home. It was also just the fifth time this season the Everblades scored the first goal. Magwood started the scoring at the 14:24 mark of the first period. Extended zone time by the visitors allowed John McCarron to get open space and find Magwood in the slot, and his shot rose past the glove hand of Ryan Bednard to open the scoring. The 'Blades struck twice in the second period. Magwood's second came on a neutral zone turnover. Physical defenseman Arvin Atwal set up Magwood racing down the wing, and another wicked shot found paydirt to double the lead. Justin Auger put on his dancing shoes with a tremendous deke across the crease and posted his seventh goal of the season to cap the scoring. Greenville's power play, given five chances on the night, could not break through the Florida penalty kill, which ranked towards the top of the league. The 'Blades outshot the Swamp Rabbits 34-32 for the game. Bednard made 31 saves in the loss. Cam Johnson stopped all 32 shots fired his way in the shutout effort. The Swamp Rabbits head to the road on Tuesday to take on the South Carolina Stingrays. Catch the action on the Swamp Rabbits Broadcast Network, or on ECHL.TV. CANTLON: WOLF PACK OFF SEASON - VOLUME 12
Tumblr media
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - The life of a hockey executive never ends... Oh sure it slows down, but all the coaches and management in professional hockey are all working to construct and hopefully improve their rosters for the 2019-20 season. PLAYERS AND COACHING MOVEMENT The New York Rangers inked their first-round (Second overall) draft pick, Kaapo Kakko, to the standard max Entry-Level Contract of three years at $925K-NHL/$70K-AHL. Last Wednesday, the Rangers signed two more players destined for Hartford. Philippe Di Guiseppe played with four teams last year, two of them in the NHL (Carolina, Nashville) and two of them in the AHL (Charlotte, Milwaukee). He was signed to a one-year/one-way $700K contract. He was originally drafted by Carolina in 2012 in the second round, 38th overall. Ryan Dmowski (Old Lyme/Gunnery Prep) was given a one-year, AHL deal. He played ten games and earned a goal and four points at the end of last season with the Wolf Pack after completing his four-year collegiate career at UMASS-Lowell (HE). While playing in college, he registered 67 points in 132 games with the River Hawks. The Detroit Red Wings have released the details of the annual Traverse City Prospects Tournament. The tourney will be held September 6th -10th. The Rangers will play in the Ted Lindsay Division with the prospects for Columbus, Dallas, and Minnesota. The Gordie Howe Division will feature Chicago, St. Louis, Toronto, and host Detroit. The round-robin tournament will be the first look at team prospects playing in actual game action. Ex-Pack/Ranger, Artem Anisimov, was traded on Tuesday to Ottawa for forward, Zack Smith. Former CT Whale / Ranger, Michael Del Zotto signs with one of his three teams from last season, the Anaheim Ducks. His deal is for one-year very cap friendly $750K one Sway deal. He ended last season the Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues but played no games in the Finals. Ryan Donato, the son of ex-Pack and Sound Tiger, Ted Donato, signs a two-year, one-way deal paying him $1.9 million per year with Minnesota. Ex-Pack, Michael Joly, signed a one-year AHL deal with the Colorado Eagles. Ex-Pack goalie, Charles Williams signs with Indy (ECHL). One-time New Haven Nighthawk, Willie O’Ree, will likely add his last major award of the last few years as he is expected to receive a Congressional Gold Medal in honor of his being the first black player in NHL history. O’Ree, a long-time San Diego resident was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Former CT Whale VP of Marketing, Bob Ohrablo, remains as team President of the Jacksonville IceMen (ECHL) who were sold to a new management team last week. Hartford Whaler legend, Ron Francis, was hired to be the first GM for the brand spanky new Seattle NHL franchise. He was interviewed by his one-time teammate, and now former Seattle Hockey Advisor, Dave Tippett, who took the head coaching job in Edmonton. Francis drafted a large portion of the AHL Calder Cup championship Charlotte Checkers squad and constructed the Carolina Hurricanes team that went to the NHL Eastern Conference Final. He was unceremoniously demoted and eventually relieved of his duties in Carolina which ended Francis' long association with the franchise. The first thing he will do is hire a small pro scouting staff to observe the NHL and AHL over the next two years to prepare for the expansion draft. Expect former Hartford Whalers teammate, Sean Burke, to be among that select group. Burke is presently a scout for Montreal and works for Team Canada where the duo designed the Canadian Spengler Cup championship team last December. Read the Seattle Times piece HERE The Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins continue their strong off-season reloading campaign. They signed Myles Powell, who had a strong rookie year in Rochester, to an AHL contract. Goalie, Cam Johnson, switches teams. He leaves Binghamton to Milwaukee on an AHL contract. Forward, Chris Connor departs Lehigh Valley to Binghamton. Ryan Obuchowski (Yale University), who played for Kelly Cup finalist Toledo (ECHL), signs with SV Ritten/Renon (Italy-AlpsHL) for next season. Six more AHL’ers sign Euro deals in their native countries. The latest pair is Mitch Callahan of Bakersfield who goes to Augsburger (Germany-DEL) and Chase Balisy leaves Belleville for EHC Straubing (Germany-DEL). Adam Musil, the nephew of former Whaler and New York Ranger, Robert (Bobby) Holik, exits San Antonio to sign with HK Dukla Jihlava (Czech Republic-CEL). Juho Lammikko departs Springfield and signs back home with Karpat Oulu (Finland-FEL). Colton Hargrove from Texas signs with HC Bolzano (Italy-EBEL) while Brady Brassart of Syracuse inks a deal with Stavanger (Norway-NEL). 59 AHL players have signed overseas. 25 of the 31 AHL teams have lost at least one player so far to a European signing. Ex-Sound Tiger, John Persson, leaves Mora IK (Sweden-SHL) for SaiPa (Finland-FEL). The Bridgeport Sound Tigers have signed seven players for next season. The signings start with veteran forward and powerplay net-front pest, Steve Bernier, and defenseman Mike Cornell, in his third AHL season, and John Stevens Jr., who's coming off an injury-riddled sophomore campaign, is the son of ex-Whaler, John Stevens Sr. Nick Schillkey from the Calder Cup champion Charlotte Checkers, Nic Pierog (Canterbury Prep) from now-defunct Manchester Monarchs (ECHL), goalie Ryan MacKinnon, and Kyle MacLean from Oshawa (OHL), who just completed his junior career with 110 points in 227 games and is the son of former NHL’er John MacLean, are the rest of the signings. Former UCONN Husky, Maxim Letunov, had his AHL contract with the San Jose Barracuda extended by one-year by the San Jose Sharks. Ex-Sound Tiger, Cole Markison, goes from Texas to Charlotte. Joining him on the reigning Calder Cup champion is Hunter Shinkarul from Laval. Tariq Hammond leaves Binghamton for Hershey. Michael Kapla, who split last season between Iowa and Binghamton, signs with the Toronto Marlies. Goalie Hunter Miska leaves the Tucson Roadrunners and signs with the Colorado Eagles for next year Ex-Sound Tiger, Lukas Sutter, is hired as an amateur scout by Columbus. Nine more college players sign North American pro deals. They include Luke Shiplo of Quinnipiac University and Michael Ederer of St Lawrence University from the ECACHL. Both of them sign with Wichita (ECHL). A player with another great hockey name, Tanner Jago, goes from Bentley University (AHA) to sign with the Texas Stars. Vincent Desharnais of Providence College (HE) signs with Bakersfield. Eric Israel of Robert Morris University (AHA) goes to Fort Wayne Komets (ECHL) while Brett Boeing of UMASS-Amherst (HE), hooks up with Toledo (ECHL) and Dakota Joshua of Ohio State (Big 10) was traded by Toronto to St. Louis. The Blues signed him to a two-year, two-way deal and will likely start next year in San Antonio. Austin Plevy of Northeastern (HE) and Scott Davidson of Quinnipiac University (ECACHL) both sign with Adirondack (ECHL). Three have signed In Europe. Dylan Malmquist of Notre Dame (Big 10) signs with Nottingham (England-EIHL). Jeremiah Luedtke goes from University Alaska-Anchorage (WCHA) to Krefelder EV 1981 (Germany Division-3), and Jalen Schulz of University Nebraska-Omaha (NCHC) to EV Fussen (Germany Division-3). 185 Division I players have signed North American pro deals. 49 go to Europe while 233 players overall have signed deals. Paul Selleck of Cowichan Valley (BCHL) commits to Trinity College (NESCAC). Jared DeMichiel (Harwinton) gets a promotion to associate head coach with UMASS-Amherst (HE). Another school takes the first steps toward becoming an NCAA Division I varsity hockey team from a club program in Penn after 42 years of being a club program. Read it HERE. Luke Curadi (Cheshire/ND-WH/Hartford Jr. Wolf Pack) was named the USHL Director of Player Development. He had been the Eastern USA Scout for the USHL Green Bay Gamblers the last three years. IN MEMORIAM The Wolf Pack family lost another of its original pieces and a man who served pro hockey in Hartford for 45 years as the Chief of Off-Ice Officials, Robert (Bob) Henry Guarente, 77, lost a second battle with throat cancer. Only Frank Camera of Bridgeport (who started in New Haven) has served longer in an off-ice role in Connecticut minor-league hockey history. Guarente started in 1975 with the New England Whalers for the first four years, then all 21 years of the Hartford Whalers and all 22 seasons with the Wolf Pack before stepped aside in February because he could no longer speak. Sadly, he is the third off-ice official to pass in the past 18 months and fourth in the 22-year history of the franchise. He would always greet me in a poor impression of an Irish accent, “What’s up with the leprechaun today?” After the pre-game meal and before we left one of us, he had a tell an off-color joke, One of his favorite oft-repeated jokes was this one; Mary and Tom O’ Brien were walking in the town center and run into Father O’Malley. Father O’Malley chats with them and inquires why they have no children. Mrs. O’Brien replied, “We’ve tried and tried Father with no success.” Father O’Malley says, “I’m going to the Vatican next week and I will light a candle for you.” Five years go by and he runs into Mrs. O’Brien and she has four kids in tow and she is pregnant with number five. Father O’Malley with a big smile says, “Oh, I’m so happy for you. Your prayers were answered, but where is Tom?” Mrs. O’Brien replied, “He’s at the Vatican Father trying to blow out that candle you lit!” It would always bring a smile to his face and he would let loose with his trademark cackle laugh. There should be a new AHL Award created with his name. It should be started for the best off-ice crew in the AHL every year. He will be greatly missed at the XL Center come September, a dedicated loyal husband, friend, soldier and Off-Ice Director. RIP you have earned your wings. Read the full article
