And Everything Changed
Tumblr media
Characters: Eddie Munson x reader
Summary: Eddie Munson’s D&D game takes a surprising turn when a new player arrives, leading to unexpected romance and vulnerability.
Word Count: 1527 words
Prompt: ‘Now Kiss her.’
A/N: This is for @caplanbuckybarnes Disney Celebration
Eddie Munson sat in the dimly lit room, drumming his fingers on the table, waiting for the Hellfire Club members to arrive. This was their big campaign night, the night when their characters would either emerge victorious or face unspeakable doom. But there was a problem—Gareth had dropped out last minute, flu. A replacement was required, and fast.
When Dustin suggested the idea earlier in the caffeteria, Eddie had balked.
"Are you sure about this?" Eddie asked, his fingers still tapping a restless rhythm. "She's never played DnD before."
"Trust me, Eddie. She’s cool. Plus, she's into fantasy stuff," Dustin replied, already confident that this would work out.
Eddie sighed and ran a hand through his untamable hair. It wasn’t that he doubted your ability to grasp the game—it was something else. You’d been hanging out with them more lately, joining their lunch tables and occasional after-school hangouts. And as much as Eddie tried to play it cool, there was something about you that made his pulse race and his thoughts jumble. You were... different. And maybe that’s what scared him.
"Alright, fine. Bring her in. But if she can't handle the pressure, it's on you," Eddie said, pretending to be casual, even though a small part of him was excited at the thought of spending the evening with you.
When you walked into the session that evening, Eddie’s breath hitched. You looked a little out of place, unsure of what you were stepping into, but still radiating confidence. Dustin had given you a brief rundown of what you were getting yourself into, but nothing could have prepared you for the theatrical spectacle that was Eddie Munson running a Dungeons & Dragons campaign.
"Welcome to the Hellfire Club," Eddie said, his voice deep and theatrical as he gestured to the table. "I hope you're ready for the most intense adventure of your life."
You smiled, a little shy but intrigued. "Thanks. I hope I don’t mess up too much."
"Nah, you'll be fine," Dustin chimed in. "Eddie's a good teacher."
Eddie shot Dustin a glare, as if to say 'don't oversell me,' but then he turned back to you and gave you one of his trademark devilish grins. "Alright, sit down, newbie. Let’s get started."
As the game kicked off, Eddie watched you carefully. You were picking things up quickly, asking questions when needed but mostly diving into the story with surprising enthusiasm. The room was buzzing with energy as everyone got lost in the game, but Eddie couldn’t help but be distracted by you.
It wasn’t just your character’s quick thinking or the way you seemed to take to the fantasy world so easily—it was you. The way your eyes lit up when something exciting happened in the game. The way you leaned forward when your character was in danger. And how, when you laughed at one of his ridiculous voices, it felt like a little victory.
As the campaign progressed, something shifted. The game wasn’t just a game anymore—it became a stage for something bigger. Every glance between your character and Eddie’s NPCs seemed to carry more weight. Every time your characters interacted, it felt like the two of you were playing out something just beneath the surface, something neither of you had the courage to confront directly.
And then it happened.
The group had just survived a major battle. Your character, an inexperienced mage, had managed to cast a spell that turned the tide in their favor, saving everyone from certain doom. Eddie, as the dungeon master, described the aftermath in vivid detail.
"The smoke clears, and all that’s left are the charred remains of your enemies. But as the dust settles, you realize something—your companion, Sir Andor," he said, referring to the noble knight NPC he’d been playing, "is badly wounded. He falls to the ground, bleeding."
You looked at Eddie, your brow furrowing. "I rush over to him. Can I do anything?"
Eddie leaned forward, the intensity of the moment pulling everyone in. "Sir Andor looks up at you, his breaths shallow. 'I fear... this is the end...,'" he said, dropping his voice low to play the character.
"No," you whispered, your voice filled with genuine emotion. "It can’t be the end."
The rest of the group was watching in silence, completely wrapped up in the drama unfolding between your character and Eddie’s. Even Dustin, who usually cracked jokes during the game, was unusually quiet.
"I want to... try to heal him," you said, almost hesitant.
Eddie’s heart skipped a beat. He wasn’t sure if it was the game or if it was you, sitting right there, your eyes locked with his. For a moment, it felt like everything else fell away.
"Roll for it," Eddie said, trying to keep his voice steady.
The dice clattered across the table. It was a high roll—just enough to succeed.
Eddie cleared his throat, slipping back into character. "Sir Andor looks at you, his eyes softening. 'You... you saved me,' he says, his voice filled with gratitude. He reaches out and touches your hand."
The room was thick with tension, everyone waiting for what would happen next. Your character had saved him, but the moment felt bigger than the game.
Dustin, sensing something in the air, leaned forward with a mischievous grin and whispered, "Now kiss her."
The table erupted in laughter, breaking the tension. But Eddie, instead of laughing it off, looked at you. He wasn’t sure why, but he couldn’t pull his eyes away. His heart was racing, and the playful comment had hit a little too close to home.
You looked back at him, a small smile playing on your lips. "Well, Sir Andor?" you teased, breaking the silence.
Eddie chuckled, but there was something different in his laugh now—something real. "I think Sir Andor... owes you more than just a kiss."
The rest of the game played out smoothly, but the dynamic between you and Eddie had changed. What had started as a game had turned into something far more personal. By the end of the night, as the other players packed up their things and said their goodbyes, you lingered behind, waiting for Eddie.
"I had fun tonight," you said softly, your voice carrying more meaning than just the game.
"Yeah? Even though you got thrown into the deep end?" Eddie asked, trying to sound casual, but his nerves were betraying him.
You shrugged. "I think I did alright. Plus, I had a good teacher."
Eddie smiled, but there was a vulnerability in his eyes now. He wasn’t sure if it was the game, the way you’d thrown yourself into the character, or the fact that you’d stayed after everyone else had left—but something had shifted. He wasn’t just crushing on you from a distance anymore. There was a real connection here, something deeper.
"I, uh..." Eddie started, his voice faltering. He wasn’t sure how to say what was on his mind, so he just blurted it out. "I’ve kinda liked you for a while, you know."
Your eyes widened slightly, but instead of pulling away, you stepped closer to him. "I know," you said quietly.
Eddie blinked, surprised. "You do?"
You nodded, a small smile tugging at your lips. "I’ve noticed. And... I kinda like you too."
Eddie’s heart skipped a beat, the world around him fading into the background. For a moment, he didn’t know what to say. He wasn’t used to feeling this vulnerable, this exposed. But at the same time, it felt right.
"I, uh... I don’t know how to do this," Eddie admitted, his voice softer now. "I’m not exactly the guy who gets the girl, you know?"
You reached out and took his hand, your touch grounding him. "You don’t have to be perfect, Eddie. I don’t want perfect. I just want someone who sees me, who’s willing to stick around even when things get messy."
Eddie looked at you, his heart swelling with something he hadn’t felt in a long time—hope. "Yeah?"
"Yeah," you said, stepping even closer. "I want someone who can love the parts of me that aren’t always easy."
Eddie swallowed hard, his eyes searching yours. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. It was like you were speaking the words he’d always longed to hear but had never dared to hope for.
For a moment, there was nothing but the two of you, standing there in the dimly lit room, the echoes of your words hanging in the air. And then, without thinking, Eddie leaned in and kissed you—not in the way Sir Andor would have kissed your character in the game, but in a way that was real and raw, like it was the first time he’d ever truly let himself feel this way.
When he pulled back, his heart was pounding, and he could barely catch his breath. "So... does this mean you’re coming back to Hellfire next week?" he asked with a teasing grin.
You laughed softly, still holding his hand. "Yeah. I think I’ll stick around."
And just like that, everything changed for Eddie Munson.

All the books coming this winter/spring...
Ok, folks. It's cold. Time to dive under the covers and hibernate next to a teetering pile of books. Time to kick off that 2020 reading challenge. Time to plant the TBR seeds that will go into the flowers that make up new spring books...or something (I don't know, I'm sleepy). Here we go!
JANUARY 2020
1/14: Zed by Joanna Kavenna: In the not-so-distant future, a global tech corporation has made a perfect world with a perfect algorithm...but what to do about all these messy people?
1/21: The Janes by Louisa Luna: the follow up to Luna's thriller TWO GIRLS DOWN, THE JANES follows private investigators Alice Vega and Max Caplan as they work to identify two Jane Does discovered on the outskirts of San Diego.
FEBRUARY 2020
2/11: The Illness Lesson by Clare Beams: at a newly founded school for girls in 19th century New England, the students are falling mysteriously ill...when a sinister doctor is brought in to treat them, a young teacher must decide how to save her pupils - and herself.
2/25: Soot by Dan Vyleta: the sequel to national bestseller SMOKE, this fantastical story brings readers back into a universe that is "part Dickens, part dystopia, and totally immersive" (Entertainment Weekly).
2/25: The Storm Before the Calm by George Friedman: a master geopolitical forecaster predicts the dramatic upheaval of government, foreign policy, economics and culture in the 2020s.
MARCH 2020
3/3: The Back Roads to March by John Feinstein: a fascinating journey through the unsung, unpublicized, and often unknown heroes of college basketball.
3/3: The Body Double by Emily Beyda: an unnamed young woman is approached and asked to give up her old life and identity to impersonate a reclusive Hollywood star...gritty, glamorous, and seriously deranged.
3/3: The Velvet Rope Economy by Nelson Schwartz: if you've ever been to Disney World, or flown on an airplane, applied to college, or stayed in a hospital...you're familiar with the way an invisible velvet rope divides Americans in every arena of life. This book investigates the toll this velvet rope takes on society.
3/10: Good Citizens Need Not Fear by Maria Reva: A brilliant and bitingly funny collection of stories united around a single crumbling apartment building in Ukraine.
3/17: Child of Light by Madison Smartt Bell: the first and definitive biography of the great postwar American novelist Robert Stone.
3/17: The Dream Universe by David Lindley: A captivating book that asks the question: what happens when science becomes more theoretical and less tangible? Does modern science have more to do with the philosophy of Plato than measurable phenomena?
3/17: The Lady's Handbook for Her Mysterious Illness by Sarah Ramey: The darkly funny memoir of Sarah Ramey’s years-long battle with a mysterious illness that doctors thought was all in her head—but wasn’t. A revelation and an inspiration for millions of women whose legitimate health complaints are ignored.
3/17: The New Life of Hugo Gardner by Louis Begley: Divorced after decades of comfortable marriage, retired journalist Hugo Gardner sets out to explore paths not travelled in this sharp new comedy of manners.
3/17: The Red Lotus by Chris Bohjalian: an American man vanishes on a rural road in Vietnam, and his girlfriend, an emergency room doctor trained to ask questions, follows a path that leads her home to the very hospital where they met.
3/31: Code Name Helene by Ariel Lawhon: a story about the BADASS "socialite spy" who killed a Nazi with her bare hands and went on to become one of the most decorated women in WWII.
APRIL 2020
4/7: Hidden Valley Road by Robert Kolker: The heartrending story of a midcentury American family with twelve children, six of them diagnosed with schizophrenia, that became science’s great hope in the quest to understand the disease.
4/14: Bubblegum by Adam Levin: a crazy, hilarious, profound and epic novel that takes place in an alternate-universe Chicagoland suburb where the Internet has never existed. OH, AND THE COVER ACTUALLY SMELLS LIKE BUBBLEGUM.
4/14: Notes From An Apocalypse by Mark O'Connell: absorbing, deeply felt collection of essays about our anxious present tense–and coming to grips with the future.
4/21: What's Left of Me Is Yours by Stephanie Scott: A gripping debut set in modern-day Tokyo and inspired by a true crime, What’s Left of Me Is Yours charts a young woman’s search for the truth about her mother’s life–and her murder.
4/28: Camino Winds by John Grisham: John Grisham returns to Camino Island where mystery and intrigue once again catch up with novelist Mercer Mann, proving that the suspense never rests—even in paradise.
MAY 2020
5/12: The Anthill by Julianne Pachico: A wildly original blend of satire and social horror that follows Lina, a young woman returning to her home country of Colombia after many years away to volunteer at a daycare center called The Anthill. For fans of movies like Get Out and Parasite.
5/12: Flash Crash by Liam Vaughan: The story of a trading prodigy who amassed $70 million from his childhood bedroom–until the US government accused him of helping trigger an unprecedented market collapse.

Say What Now?!(Sam Wilson x Female!Reader)
Fandom: Marvel, MCU, Characters: Sam Wilson, You/Reader, Clint Barton, Faery Queen(OC) Relationships: Sam Wilson x Female!Reader, M/F, Summary: For Caplan’s Disney Challenge, “True love’s kiss!” @caplansteverogers Word Count: 951 Warnings: Swearing, any others that I don’t know is possible, possible typos A/N: There might be typos, I just wrote it. Un-beta-ed.
Masterlist
Why did we end up here? Y/N cursed, glaring at Sam Wilson as the vines curled around him and Clint Barton. The vines soon would start to strangle and kill them if the Queen’s orders weren’t followed through.
“What is it?” Y/N asked, forcing her face blank. This was her goddamn fault, if she had just come here and visited her mother on her own this wouldn’t have happened. The Faery Queen smirked in her childish, immortal beauty.
“True love’s kiss!” Her mother said causing Y/N pale considerably. “The cure to all. You kiss who you truly and wholeheartedly love and your friends will be free, daughter.”
“Why is the game always on me?” Y/N asked, thinking as quickly as possible. This is going to be painful, but it had to be done. Her mother could not be reasoned with.
“True…love’s kiss?!” Clint laughed half-heartedly before making a strangled sound, Y/N looked to see the cause and saw that the vines were starting to strangle her friends.
Y/N glared at her mother, sneering at the Fae. “Fine!” Y/N spat out before spinning around and stalking towards the man that she loved so dearly, the very person that would probably hate her after this. What she was…it was supposed to stay a secret, but secrets never stay that way. Y/N swallowed, looking Sam in the eyes, she whispered, “I’m sorry.”
Y/N wrapped her arms around Sam’s neck, pressing their lips together and ignoring the stabbing feeling from the vines. Closing her eyes, Y/N pretended that this kiss was happening somewhere more pleasant and under better circumstances.
As the vines pulled away from Sam, he leaned into the kiss and wrapped his arms around her. They held each other close, not daring to pull away and break the illusion. All too soon there was a cough.
“Well –“ the Faery Queen started.
“Mother, that is enough don’t you think. You’ve had your fun with the mortals. Now, may we leave your Court,” Y/N interrupted, trying to leave quickly as possible so the reality of what had just happened wouldn’t rain down on her.
“Yes, I think so, daughter,” the Faery Queen agreed. “Bye bye bye~”
Y/N hurried out of the Court as fast as she could without running, looking everywhere, but at Sam, not even at Clint. Even so, she held herself as the faery part of her would. As if she was better than those following her and nodded at a few of that she knew well. Y/N could feel the faery grace in her posture and gait, she wanted out of there.
Even in the forest, she did not dare to slow that is what happened before that got them into that mess.
“Hey, Y/N, do you think that you could slow up?” Clint asked.
“No, our leisure walking earlier is what caused us such trouble. We should leave as soon as we can, before other incidents arise.” Y/N could feel how the land was sinking into her, she shuddered. This is why she tried to stay away from it, she passed it every time she was on a run though she tried to plan not to come by the portals.
Once passing through the portal, Y/N following the others through, she tried to continue, but Sam grabbed her arm stopping her.
“Are you not going to –“
“No,” Y/N stated firmly. “You weren’t even supposed to find out that I’m part faery.”
“That’s not the problem!”
Y/N scoffed jerking her head. “Not the problem! I’m part faery, that isn’t even the worst part! I’m the blood daughter to the Faery Queen. The faery that just about killed you!”
“Because I killed some bugs on a tree, that was my fault!”
“I know I shouldn’t get between you two, but you are in love with Sam, Y/N, and Sam is in love with you,” Clint said. “And you’re a faery, so what, you’re still Y/N. Probably more powerful then you let on, but you are you, nothing’s changing that.”
“Clint is right, Y/N, I’m in love with you and you being a faery and the daughter of a dangerous and terrifying faery, who happens to rule the Fae Land, doesn’t change that.” Sam looked deeply into her eyes, Y/N tried to swallow. He loved her! She could barely believe it, even though he knew her parentage.
“I never wanted to know about my faery part. Faeries are tricksters, part demon part angel being that live for a long time and I don’t know what that means for me. I try to avoid that part of me as much as possible. I –“
“I love you, Y/N L/N. I have for a long time, don’t try to tell me that your mother’s deal with the ‘True love’s kiss’ thing was all a houxe.” Sam’s eyes seemed to beg her to say something. Y/N slumped.
“You can’t trick magic, not magic like that at least,” Y/N said quietly. “I’m in love with you, Samuel Thomas Wilson. I’ve been completely head over heels for you.”
Sam was smiling like he almost couldn’t believe it either. “Can I kiss you?”
Y/N smiled. “Hell yes.”
Sam wrapped his arms around her and pulled her to his chest, now grinning. Both leaned in, kissing with their whole being. So wrapped up in the moment that they had not only forgot that Clint – who was smiling the whole time – was still there and was now taking pictures with his phone.
When they finally pulled back for air, Sam and Y/N were panting and grinning at one another. Clint snorted, but was glad they finally got their shit together.
Y/N tapped Sam’s chest. “That…was something, Wilson.”
“Indeed it was.”

How 'Coco' makes new musicians out of actors Gael García Bernal and Benjamin Bratt
Tumblr media
‘Coco’ (Disney/Pixar)
Attention, Wikipedia contributors. Please update the respective biographies of actors Gael García Bernal and Benjamin Bratt to include “and musician” among their listed professions.
The two boldest-faced names in the voice cast of Coco, Disney-Pixar’s poignant new love letter to Mexico, Dia de los Muertos, and musica, García Bernal (Y Tu Mamá Tambien, Mozart in the Jungle) and Bratt (Miss Congeniality, Law & Order) count themselves among the least experienced musical performers in the ensemble. That’s even compared to their 13-year-old costar Anthony Gonzalez, who plays Miguel, the boy who inadvertently crosses over into the Land of the Dead when he strums a few notes off a magical guitar. Gonzalez has been a street performer since age 4.
Coco, in fact, marks the first time we’ve heard Bratt, who plays a crucial role as Mexican folk legend Ernesto de la Cruz, sing on screen. “The great irony is I have always wanted to be a singer or talented musician,” Bratt told Yahoo Entertainment. “I could never achieve that dream, though I’ve often said, ‘I’d give my left toe to be a talented balladeer.”
Bratt got his opportunity when Coco co-directors Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina recruited him for the role of de la Cruz, introduced in the story not only as Miguel’s idol but the greatest balladeer Mexico has ever known. “When I was first given the chance to take on the role, Lee said, ‘We’d also like you to sing.’ So my initial reaction was one of pure terror. But I’m also up for a challenge. He said, ‘Look, we’re going to provide a huge safety net. We’re going to get you the best training that there is.'”
youtube
García Bernal does at least have some limited musical experience: He performed a ranchera-themed cover of Cheap Trick’s ’70s rock hit “I Want You to Want Me,” “Quiero Que Me Quieras,” (complete with a highly entertaining green-screen video) for the soundtrack of his 2008 soccer drama Rudi y Curso.
“I love singing, and I love music, but I am not a musician,” insisted García Bernal, who plays Héctor, the deceased trickster who aids Miguel on his quest through the Land of the Dead and who is eventually revealed to have his own complicated musical history. “I can only sing through a character… Even in karaoke, I have to be a character. I can’t be myself. I just don’t have a singing voice… If I was in one of those singing shows where you have to stand up and sing to impress people, I would fail miserably.”
Coco audiences will probably disagree. Bratt and García Bernal own some of the film’s biggest sonic triumphs, beginning with Bratt’s instantly infectious version of the heartbreaking “Remember Me” (which the actor performed live with Gonzalez at D23 in July and is already an early Oscar favorite for Best Original Song) and continuing with García Bernal’s tender acoustic track “Everyone Knows Juanita,” among other contributions.
Both actors stress they had plenty of assists. Part of the “huge safety net” Bratt mentioned was vocal coach Liz Caplan. “She’s the wizard of all musical voices in New York. She works with all the Broadway stars and other film actors who have to sing on camera,” Bratt said. “And through lots of rehearsal, lots of training, lots of nerves, and lots of tears, we finally arrived at something that was usable. But you know, they’re wizards, so I’m sure there was some aid in there, too.”
youtube
It also helped that Coco‘s songwriters were Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Bobby Lopez, music-and-lyrics maestros who know a thing or two about writing hit songs for animated movies, having penned those ubiquitous numbers from Disney’s 2013 mega-hit Frozen. “They were so helpful, they made you feel comfortable,” García Bernal said. “They gave me really interesting tips. They take care of you, and they do it really properly.”
Even if the musical initiations of Bratt and García Bernal don’t connect with moviegoers (fat chance), there’s at least one place Bratt will exercise bragging rights: In his own casa. “What I am quite thrilled about is now my children can no longer say, ‘Dad please don’t sing, you’re not a singer,'” he laughed. “I am now in fact a professional singer, because they paid me to do it.”
Coco is now in theaters. Watch the trailer:

“He was this close—just staring at me.”
“Do you trust me?”
“(And) You will always be in my heart.”
“I especially love his smile.”
“New and a bit alarming.”
“Now kiss her.”
“How can I prove myself if no one will give me a chance?”
“People around here think I’m crazy, but I don’t care.”
“I’m a damsel. I’m in distress. I can handle this. Have a nice day.”
“Guys….I want a castle.”
“If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothin’ at all.”
“When I look at you, I can feel it. I look at you, and I’m home.”
“Put that thing back where it came from or so help me.”
“There’s no one I’d rather be than me.”
“It was worth it…if you learned something from it.”
“You deliberately disobeyed me.”
“I’m surrounded by idiots.”
“How could you do that to me?”
