Note
you can rank from richest to least rich. in one episode gossip girl says bart bass is richer than bloomberg (wtf). so maybe bass- vanderbilt(even though nate continued to live at chuck's, maybe he'll stay at the empire even after the CB wedding)-grimaldi- van der woodsen- waldorf- humprey- vanessa's family.
Now will I use this post to drag Louis? I sure will.
Chuck is most definitely first, as you said the gg voice over says that he has more bucks than Bloomberg and more towers than Trump. So considering that Bloomberg nowadays is worth around 59 billons USD you can guess about how big of a money we are talking about here. Plus after his marriage with Blair their net worth combined and we probably entered a brand new level. Which suits me because my Married Power Couple deserves all the diamonds and they need their private island and houses on every continent for their romantic trips.
Next I think we have Serena, her father was well known surgeon and her mother’s family owned record label in LA, so they were rich within their own right but then Lily married Bart and never truly divorced him so she took his money, she also has shares in BI which probably gives her very nice income. And we are talking here about the worth in billions.
Now I don’t who should I put here Nate or Blair? I feel like their families have very similar net worth. That is in millions not billions.
The one thing about Vanderbilts I think people need to realize is that they are not that rich, I mean they are but not as rich as you would think. Here’s a thing Vanderbilts used to be one of the richest families in New York but they’ve lost their money and were left with a very prestigious name and properties that in some cases aren’t fully theirs. They are actually known for the “fall of the Vanderbilt family” as they’ve lost so much. So they still have few hundred millions dollars, for reference Gloria Vanderbilt (Anderson Cooper’s mother) supposedly was worth 200 million dollars. So I’d say given that his dad had money on his own I’d say he is worth around double that.
Blair is an interesting case as her dad is probably from the old money and is probably super rich, plus as lawyer he wasn’t making pennies but rather bigger money. Eleanor was based on Carolina Herrera and her net worth is 130 million dollars, furthermore she is now married to Cyrus who is/was an entertainment lawyer which gives you huge money especially since his clients are of the Lady Gaga caliber. So I think that Waldorf family might actually be a bit higher than Archibalds.
Dan without the doubt is the lowest but also not super low, like his dad owned a gallery and then had his “I’m a music producer adventure” so they are still worth few millions.
Vanessa has for sure has lower net worth than Humphrey’s as she actually is from the working class, doesn’t go to their school, doesn’t just hang out in the loft and unlike Dan or Jenny actually had to work on her own. Her parents I think are like professors or sth like that but not in private university so it’s not anything crazy.
Now as for Louis, his family is for sure worth big money. Prince Albert (head of the Grimaldi family) is said to be worth 1 billion so frankly compare it to Bass family it’s lame but whatever Louis is even lamer. You see Louis isn’t entitled to this money as he isn’t high in the line of succession, he was supposed to be just Prince Albert’s nephew, Albert now has to 2 kids that are heirs to the throne and also has 2 other kids out of marriage. So Louis would just be somewhere in the background. To give an idea how much he could be worth Andrea Casiraghi (prince Albert’s real nephew) is set to have net worth around 1-5 million USD. So while sure Louis was rich and probably could use some of the Grimaldi privileges on his own he isn’t worth that much. Generally he sucks and it makes you see why he was so greedy for Blair’s dowry.

Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Said Set to Sell to Puig – WWD
https://pmcwwd.files.wordpress.com/2020/01/2017_01_25_charlotte_tilbury_emoji__shot01_245.jpg?w=640&h=415&crop=1
After months of speculation, the Charlotte Tilbury Beauty brand looks poised to have a new owner: Puig.
Numerous sources have told WWD that the Spanish fragrance and fashion house will reveal as early as Thursday that it has acquired the brand.
A Puig spokeswoman declined to comment on Wednesday, following swirling reports launched by Bloomberg.
One source told WWD that BDT Capital will also take a share in Charlotte Tilbury, and that its celebrity makeup artist founder is to retain a meaningful stake in her brand. Charlotte Tilbury Beauty chief executive officer Demetra Pinsent is also expected to maintain a position in the business.
The source pegged the brand’s purchase price at around 1.2 billion pounds, making the acquisition worth about five-times revenues. The company’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization are said to be in the high $20 million range.
In fiscal 2018, Charlotte Tilbury’s sales rose 34 percent to 100.9 million pounds, while EBITDA was 3.8 million pounds, up from 2.8 million pounds in the previous year. Net profit after tax was 3.5 million pounds, according to Companies House, the official register of U.K. businesses.
Speculation about a pending deal had emerged months ago, with Unilever, The Estée Lauder Cos. Inc., L’Oréal and Shiseido cited as front-runners.

According to a source, Charlotte Tilbury went into the sale process looking for a valuation of up to 3 billion pounds. WWD first reported that Tilbury was looking into a deal in 2019, and added investment bank Jefferies to work with Goldman Sachs on a deal early this year.
For Puig, the upsides of acquiring Charlotte Tilbury are manifold.
For one, it would give the Spanish beauty group a further push into color cosmetics, a product category the family-owned company first dipped into, with great success, after acquiring the Christian Louboutin beauty license in March 2018.
Puig, which mostly trades in the fragrance space, would also welcome a brand that has a swiftly growing skin-care business. Sources estimate skin care makes up about one-third of Tilbury’s sales. That share could rise to 50 percent by yearend, spurred by the successful launch of the Magic Serum Crystal Elixir for $80.
Several sources say the Tilbury web site has performed very well, which is attractive to investors, especially as brick-and-mortar retail closed worldwide due to the coronavirus. The brand’s sales online have more than doubled since last year, one source said.
Another source said during lockdown, online sales have been up 20 percent week-on-week.
Further, it’s believed Puig sees Tilbury as someone who can develop other lines, potentially a lifestyle concept. That’s a similar strategy Puig planned for Dries Van Noten when it acquired the label two years ago and at the time said the brand might be expanded into categories such as homeware.
Puig’s fragrance portfolio, which in 2019 generated estimated sales of 1.81 billion euros, up 3 percent year-over-year, is a mix of owned and licensed labels, such as Carolina Herrera, Nina Ricci, Paco Rabanne, Penhaligon’s and Comme des Garçons.
The Puig business hit some hurdles of late — not only as the domestic travel-retail channels dried up during the COVID-19 pandemic, but also as a couple of brands have left or are about to exit its stable.
In 2018, Puig’s fragrance license with Valentino was discontinued by mutual agreement. And on Jan. 1, 2021, Puig’s fragrance license with Prada, which began as a partnership in 2003, comes to an end.
Charlotte Tilbury Beauty, a rapidly growing hybrid skin-care, makeup and scent brand, was launched in the U.K. in late 2013.
Tilbury herself is not just identifiable by her flaming red hair and penchant for sky-high pumps, but has personified a new generation of beauty entrepreneurs who are rewriting the rules of marketing and are as adept at building online communities as making in-store appearances, as comfortable spearheading next-generation product development as reading a P&L.

Her brand — best known for Magic Cream, priced at $100, and Pillow Talk Matte Revolution Lipstick, at $34 — successfully represents the convergence of all of Tilbury’s worlds, creating “looks” (and attendant products), based on her work. So The Rock Chick — heavy on black kohl and mascara — was based on her friend Kate Moss, while The Golden Goddess translated Sienna Miller’s glow appeal.
Tilbury’s products are frequently merchandised with “look” suggestions that guide buyers to which products they can use to create various beauty moments.
“Designers tell you what tops to wear with what skirts and shoes,” Tilbury told WWD Beauty Inc in a 2016 interview, “but no makeup brand tells you what eyes to wear with what cheeks and what lips, and puts it all together in an easy format. What women want is time-effective, easy-to-use, easy-to-choose products. We are all time-poor. We want quick, efficient products.”
Tilbury relishes staging rollicking events with her retailers. “We live in an era where you can’t not be disruptive,” she said in the same interview. “We live in the digital era and to stay relevant, everyone has to change.”
Her motto? “Give a woman the right makeup and she can conquer the world,” she told WWD Beauty Inc. “I’m incredibly ambitious and hard-working, and I’ve had a vision of that since I was a young girl. This is what I’ve always wanted to do.”
In 2017, Charlotte Tilbury Beauty took on a new minority investor, Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm Sequoia Capital. Welsh-born billionaire Sir Michael Moritz, a partner at Sequoia Capital, joined the board of the beauty brand.
Sequoia, which is based in Menlo Park, Calif., was an early investor in Google, Alibaba and WhatsApp. Tilbury’s other minority investors include Venrex Investment Management, run by Mark Esiri.
Charlotte Tilbury has won scores of industry awards, including the 2015 Beauty Inc Indie of the Year prize. The brand regularly scoops CEW U.K. Awards for a variety of its products.
The company is also widely recognized for its social, community-based marketing strategies, and is big on innovation, introducing the augmented reality “Magic Mirror” to Westfield London and the brand’s Covent Garden shop, launching a virtual reality perfume experience involving Moss, and creating the “Hot Lips x Women for Women” lipsticks. A percentage of proceeds from the sales go to the Women for Women charity.
During an interview in May 2019, when Marc Puig, Puig’s chief executive officer was discussing the company’s overall 2018 results — net profits rising 6 percent to 242 million euros and stable sales at 1.93 billion euros — he also talked about the makeup category and the Christian Louboutin brand.
“We are eager to, step by step, gain experience and territory in that category,” said Puig. “So far the potential of the brand, the evolution and progress we’ve made is beyond our expectations.
“And in the near future there will be some of the brands in our portfolio that will enter the color-cosmetics cosmetics category, too. We want to do it right — not necessarily big up front,” he continued.
The Carolina Herrera makeup brand was introduced in March. It began with a range of lipsticks and compacts that comes in packaging so sculptural and precious it can double as jewelry.
Puig has been honing its focus on niche brands, as well. In 2018, for instance, it increased its stake in the Eric Buterbaugh Los Angeles fragrance business. It also holds a stake in the Brazilian high-end beauty maker and retailer Granado.

You’ve Got to Have Faith! …Saying Goodbye to a CRE Icon
This post originally appeared on tBL Marketplace Partner member  The Massimo Group Blog and is republished with permission. Find out how to syndicate your content with theBrokerList.
Over the recent holiday week the commercial real estate industry lost one of its retail icons, Faith Consolo. I was deeply saddened to learn Faith suffered a fatal heart attack at the young age of 69.
I had the honor of getting to know Faith some 7 years ago when I wrote my first book, Brokers Who Dominate. Faith was gracious enough to let me sit down and interview her in her Manhattan office. Immediately, I knew Faith had to be included in my book. Her story is one of perseverance and inspiration.
I had the privilege of speaking with Faith every year since the launch of the book. She would always ask me how she could help sell more books and how she could help my business. She was the closest thing to Zsa Zsa Gabor I ever met. She simply made me smile.
I thought I would share an interview I conducted with Faith, as her approach to success is timeless.
1. What do you think is your “secret” to success?
Beyond the obvious credos, i.e., service, tenacity, determination, staying on top of the marketplace (which in my case is retail real estate), and implementing endless global outreach to prospective clients — the most important tool any consultant or broker can have is the “silver lining” mentality. I call it Shoptimisim – positive outlook and uplifting spirit. It’s contagious!
During the downturn in 2008 and 2009, my team never stopped making deals. In fact, we had one of our best years ever in 2009! We discovered innovative retail businesses in out-of-the-way places, such as India, Brazil, Korea and China — and brought them to New York. Working on deals with landlords to attract new businesses and help them develop into successful tenants. Leasing the first luxury “pop-up” stores along luxury corridors, such as Madison Avenue and in Soho. Working our way uptown to Harlem and across the bridge into the boros landed national retailers. Always positive by being creative, as a result, everyone benefited. And now that the market in New York is starting to normalize, we are continuing our march to take many of our clients to expand nationwide.
2. Please share a story that reflects the value you bring to your clients.
In 2009, we were given the exclusive agency for the multi-level retail portion of a gorgeous brownstone on Madison Avenue’s Jewel Coast, between 63rd and 64th Streets. The market was abysmal at the time, but we came up with a broad-based marketing strategy that brought millions of eyeballs to the space from around the world. First, we hosted a party at the site for New York’s top commercial brokers, using a famous caterer. Concurrently, we offered a Mini Cooper as a prize to any broker who could lease the space – in addition to full commission. The slogan, “You Give us Your Maxi, We’ll Give you a Mini,” was featured in direct marketing, advertising and public relations campaigns and went viral around the world. Not only did our local daily newspapers cover it, the marketing caught the attention of cable news programs, German and Spanish broadcast networks and online media as far as China. Next, we helped organize a weeklong charitable pop-up store to benefit the New York City Opera. Top designers like Carolina Herrera and Donna Karan showcased their clothes to thousands of shoppers and opera buffs who bought fashion for less to benefit a great institution. Again, the exposure was astounding and attracted a global pantheon of luxury fashion retailers. I am delighted to say that Soignè K, a luxury joaillerie and fashion house with stores throughout India and in Dubai, took the space at the end of last year and opened to much fanfare in September 2010. We represented both the landlord and tenant on this transaction. Moreover, we are the exclusive representatives for the tenant’s newly planned U.S. expansion.
3. Tell me about your team.
I have been fortunate to work with some of the best people in the business who share the same dedication to our work. I may be the face of the brand, but it’s an entire group that makes the magic by working together tirelessly to maintain the highest standards and service to our clients. Overseeing both seasoned and junior brokers in our group, all of whom put in many long hours to grow their careers. We love what we do and, I like to think, inspire each other.
4. What advice would you give to a junior broker just starting out?
Walk the streets of New York or your designated market until you are intimately familiar with every block, every building and the names of every building owner. Read a variety of newspapers daily to know what’s going on in the world and you’ll understand the impact it will have on your work. Keep up with relevant television programs on CNBC, Bloomberg and Fox Business News. Follow that up by subscribing to the business and trade publications, so that you get to know the people driving our industry. Most importantly, focus on developing a good rapport with both landlords and tenants by providing best possible service and always keep them in the loop on your progress on representing them and what you are doing on their behalf. Be a joiner, I recommend being involved in industry associations to get to know the other players on a more convivial, yet strategic, level.
5. Every successful business person is driven. What drives you? Think as far back as you can. What event or habits were instilled in you to make you so driven by success?
Having Faith in yourself – passion is my fashion! I was raised by my grandmother, who was a very loving disciplinarian and instilled in me a commitment to excellence in everything I did, whether it was schoolwork or keeping my room tidy. That ethos has stayed with me throughout my life. My approach to anything is giving it my all, from the simplest tasks to my career. And the strongest quality that drives me is passion. I am absolutely passionate about my work!
6. What if anything did you do prior to your brokerage career, and what led you to commercial real estate?
I have had dozens of careers, but they’ve all stemmed from design, which was my major in school. In the early 1980s, I moved back to New York from Los Angeles, where I’d had my own interior design firm and a client roster that included many boldface names from the entertainment industry. My plan was to continue working in the field and I already had introductions to several prospective clients. But soon after arriving here, I connected with Garrick-Aug, at that time the City’s top retail real estate firm, and accepted the offer to become one of the first women in commercial real estate. It was quite a challenge and, at the same time, a perfect fit: Retail is My Detail; I have always loved shopping and the idea of helping retailers find the right space to attract people like me, was exhilarating. Eventually, I convinced Garrick-Aug to let me open an office in Paris. I spent the next three years traveling between Europe, Asia and New York, helping dozens of fashion designers and other retailers open their first U.S. flagships. My background as an interior designer certainly helped lay the groundwork, but I am also naturally drawn to creativity, which is the backbone of retail. Every day, I get to use so many of the skills developed through past experiences and careers, that in the 20-plus years I’ve been doing this work, I’ve never looked back.
7. What tips do you have about prospecting effectively?
Provide the very best service, always being accessible as constant contact is key, toss a wide net and maintain your stature. Learn from experience – knowledge from the past becomes precious pearls of wisdom in the now.
8. What tips do you have about creating a market presence – being top of mind?
We use all marketing disciplines to their greatest advantage, whether it’s direct marketing– online and/or print – advertising or public relations. Then we get out there and meet-and-greet almost daily at industry events, conferences, parties, seminars, breakfasts, lunches and dinners. I also help cultivate future stars by lecturing at universities working closely with intern programs and I recognize that we need to pass on our gifts. I have my finger on the pulse of the market and I am called upon as a source for trend tracking and industry data by the press constantly. All of these initiatives take time and are inherently demanding, but in the long run, it’s well worth the effort. We have been through the worst of times but we made it the best of times. Confident and well-positioned for the next boom!

5 Good packaging designs
As a part time job I work within the Fragrance retailing industry, due to the nature of this task I thought it would be useful to take advantage of my time in work and analyse some of the products there.
With Fragrance packing, both the actual box and bottle are considered under this title. I thought analysing both of these elements and their relationship together would be interesting to investigate.
————————————————————————————————
Carolina Herrera Good Girl Fragrance
Tumblr media
With the Carolina Herrera Fragrance they tried to achieve an overall classy, seductive, and luxurious branding approach. The box is actually quite simplistic with the block colouring and typography focused design they’ve achieved an overall sophisticated look. The use of gold colour emphasises the implication of luxury and desirability. The type is very bold and almost mimics that of the vogue and Harper’s bizarre design font, both notable fashion based designer magazines. The bottle itself fits the colour scheme of the packaging and really matches the tone of voice the box design creates. Heels have been a symbol of desirability for centuries so fits the message they are trying to send out.
I feel that both elements of this design are very well executed and that it is all cohesive and portrays a strong message. However if I were judging it on its messaging I might not consider it to be in the good catagory. It gives almost dated sexist messages which it’s seductive implications.
————————————————————————————————
Carolina Herrera Good Girl Fragrance gift set
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Continuing from the last packaging evaluation I found a gift set version of the product.
They continued to use the black and gold colour scheme, instead this time using the additional colour red which adds to the theme of seduction, luxury, and desirability . As well as this it also fits in well for Christmas, this product has been especially made for Christmas sales so it is an effective way to make it festive while both sticking to the cohesive branding. Another Christmas detail is the bow on the shoe on the front of the box which is a symbol of a gift.
For such a large box/packaging I am very impressed that they kept the simplistic/minimalistic style that the individual product illustrates. It really gives you the feel of a luxury product due to the overall quality of it. The box is shaped like a book which has a magnet built into it to help it close. As well as this the glitter sections have real glitter on, the red has almost a velvet texture. The overall experience the customer would have with this product is an immensely high quality one, which you would expect nothing less for £70 worth of product.
—————————————————————————————————
Gucci Bloom Fragrance Packaging
Tumblr media
The Gucci Bloom Fragrance is made up of three main floral notes, which makes it no surprise that the packing adorns what looks like an authentically printed flower pattern. Just like the good girl Fragrance it has a basic three colour scheme of black red and white. The red just contrasting enough that it makes it stand out but not be too overwhelming, while still keeping the complexity of the pattern. Gucci as a brand has featured many a floral print, so not only does this suit the nature of the fragrance, but the brand also. It looks like quite a high quality material due to the texture of the box as well as the emboss net of the logo.
————————————————————————————————
Jean Paul Gaultier Fragrance Packaging
Tumblr media
Jean Paul Gaultier is another luxury brand, however based on first impressions on this packaging you may not get a particularly luxury feel. A massive part of JPG fragrances branding is around their staple tin packaging. All of their fragrances have this very individual packaging technique, however this has worked in their favour as it has become a unique element of the brand and is a massive part of their modern identity. JPG also has some nautical themes for some of its fragrances, so having their fragrances in the form of a tin is almost reminiscent of shipping containers. Although you might think that it doesn’t exactly seem worth the price for a bit of tin, it actually would cost the manufacturers more money to produce it in this material rather than card. It is something no other fragrance company do for their individual frangrances so this investment of money has definitely worked out for the brand.
————————————————————————————————
Jimmy Choo Fragrance Packagaing
Tumblr media
Jimmy Choo is a very famous designer, however he is usually recognised for his shoes which have many an iconic design. This fragrance is Jimmy Choos signature fragrance, as a result of this it seems fitting that is adorns the staple snake skin pattern that he uses quite frequently through his products. The tones of pink have been used consistently through both box and bottle which makes it feel overall cohesive. Again it has gone for a bold typography surrounded by quite a blocky bit of colour acting as a frame against the very textures and complicated design. It is very unique and makes you instantly recognise the brand.

Is Our Obsession With Nostalgic Fashion Trends a Coping Mechanism?
I grew up watching Three’s Company and cultivating the conviction that being a grown-up meant living with a couple of good-looking roommates somewhere near a beach and getting embroiled in misunderstandings involving double entendres and a swinging kitchen door. But mostly it meant that I would grow up to wear the hell out of ’70s-style midi-length skirts like Suzanne Somers’s Chrissy Snow. If Chrissy was my style hero, it wasn’t for the tight tops or bouncing flaxen ponytails. (Lord knows, blond and busty I am not.) But those swingy, waist-whittling A-line silhouettes, in shades of rust and sand and saddle brown, ideally partnered with espadrilles or stacked-heel boots, embroidered themselves in my imagination as the ultimate costume of young adulthood.
In fact, it occurs to me now that I’ve spent most of my life wanting to dress like (be?) a character in a ’70s sitcom. The Mary Tyler Moore Show’s Mary Richards instilled in me the fantasy that all that stood between me and competent, independent, self-possessed womanhood was a pair of dramatically-high-waisted wide-legged trousers. (I’m particularly weak to their summer sister, wide-legged button-front sailor pants. I’m sorry to add that I now claim more pairs of sailor pants than Captain High Liner, but it appears that I’m still waiting for the “competent” part to kick in. The possession of high-waisted trousers, it turns out, does not result in sexy self-possession.)
I now claim more pairs of sailor pants than Captain High Liner, but it appears that I’m still waiting for the “competent” part to kick in. The possession of high-waisted trousers, it turns out, does not result in sexy self-possession.
For all of this longing for a bygone time and its superior outfits, I can also blame my mother. She is French and therefore unusually brilliant at longing. For her, nostalgia, along with its passel of écharpe-wearing, Gitanes-puffing relatives—ennui, melancholy, malaise—is a cultural sport. (It’s also, come to think of it, the only sport at which I excel.)
But whatever the reason for this sartorial pining—maybe it’s because images of these outfits are so well parcelled with my childhood or because they dressed characters at the start of their new careers and lives—these clothes seem to me to be the wardrobe of beret-tossing hope and freedom. If I’m still weak in the face of a D-ring belt and a calf-grazing hemline, it’s because these clothes, to me, evoke a fantasy of fresh adulthood: the sitcom version—one not yet buttoned to commitments and uncreased by disillusionment.

I am hardly alone in my love affair with ’70s fashion. French fashion house Chloé has long escorted us back to a silk-jersey-swathed golden age; its newly minted creative director, Natacha Ramsay-Levi, has cited ’70s stars Anjelica Huston, Isabelle Huppert and Sissy Spacek as style heroes. (Suzanne Somers was not on the list. I know—a stunning oversight.) Meanwhile, indie cult brands like New York’s Apiece Apart can’t keep their pintucked overalls and wide-legged cropped Merida pants in Chrissy-friendly shades of camel in stock. And ’70s-style denim—a buckle-belted midi-skirt from London-based designer Rejina Pyo, a wide-legged contrast-stitched cropped jumpsuit from Ulla Johnson and an A-line cotton-chambray shirtdress from Gabriela Hearst—brought a certain come-and-knock-on-my-door vibe into the current era.
All of this might explain why, when I was about 23, I bought an A-line dark denim midi-skirt—a Chrissy Snow classic as far as I was concerned—and proceeded to spend the better part of my 20s wearing it. If a decade can be defined by a piece of clothing, this skirt was the uniform of my 20s. Here’s how we met: I was in New York for a weekend, visiting a friend, when I popped into Agnès B.—a move that felt, at the time, like sashaying into Céline—and fell in destabilizing love. I still remember the skirt’s price tag ($145 U.S.) because I spent the rest of the weekend rationalizing why it was entirely worth this (then-reckless-and-financially-ruinous) sum. I was just about to start my first real job (as a junior editor at a magazine), and the skirt—simple but with just enough working-girl pluck—would be my armour for my professional debut. I bought it.
I quit that job a few years later, but I remained deeply committed to the skirt. Then, sometime after I turned 30—I don’t know when or how—I lost it. I moved so many times from apartment to apartment (none of them near a beach, by the way), I don’t know what became of it. Sort of like a college boyfriend, it was so central in my life for so many years until one day it wasn’t. Although it disappeared over 10 years ago now, I find myself wondering about it, longing for it, sometimes even popping into Agnès B. thinking it will be there. (It never is.)
I have the wide-legged trousers but not the newsroom and I’m-gonna-make-it-after-all life to wear them in.
I have now worked as a freelance writer for 15 years and never quite became the careerist I thought I’d grow up to be. (I have the wide-legged trousers but not the newsroom and I’m-gonna-make-it-after-all life to wear them in.) I now spend more time in playgrounds and in pyjamas than I do, say, trading witticisms and tossing berets on my way up the professional ladder. I’m all for the present…I know you can’t live in the past, fair enough, but you can try.
In Paul Simon’s ’70s “Slip Slidin’ Away,” he sings that “a bad day’s when I lie in bed / and think of things that might have been.” On a recent bad day, as I online-shopped for the person I might have been, I came across the dreamiest dress version of that long-lost skirt, courtesy of Los Angeles-based brand Co, which is helmed by married couple Stephanie Danan and Justin Kern. It was divine in dark-rinse Japanese denim and accoutred with patch pockets and a full A-line midi-skirt.
“The ’70s is a place of nostalgia for me, too—it’s the time I remember my mother at her most glamorous,” Danan, who is from Montreal, tells me. “My mom was a designer in the ’70s and ’80s. She sold her line at Holt Renfrew and had a shop-in-shop at Ogilvy, and every Saturday I would follow her around for hours on end from vintage store to vintage store on St-Denis Street. And so began my own relationship with nostalgia and looking at clothes from a more historical perspective.” Danan and Kern founded the brand in 2011 after years of working in the film industry. Their signature silhouettes are hot sellers on Net-a-Porter and Goop, and they count Gwyneth Paltrow, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Jessica Seinfeld as fans.
When I meet Danan and Kern at their office in downtown L.A., I confess my ’70s sitcom habit and my current infatuation with that denim dress. “We tend to reference the ’40s more in our clothes,” Kern offers summarily. “That dress definitely has a ’40s vibe, but you can also imagine it with a pair of ’70s boots,” adds Danan. I prefer to imagine myself in it. In it, I’ll be young, at the start of something new and exciting, and I’ll be the person I might have been. It will take me back to a time when I only looked ahead. Danan kindly suggests that I try it on.
In it, I’ll be young, at the start of something new and exciting, and I’ll be the person I might have been. It will take me back to a time when I only looked ahead.
But the dress looked so much better on me in my head. Maybe because what I want is not the skirt or the dress but the time of life it belonged to. It turns out you can’t find the past—not even at full price on Net-a-Porter.
