Catherine of Aragon, The Divorced Queen (1/?)

Henry VIII was very much in love with his wife, Catherine of Aragon at the beginning of their marriage. But like a little boy fed up with his old toys, Enrique got tired of Catherine just three years after her marriage and three babies died shortly after birth. The king sought lovers among them, Elizabeth "Bessie" Blount, who became pregnant and this pregnancy was the reason for Henry to divorce Catherine, stating that she was a sterile woman and that with her by his side the Tudor dynasty could never continue in England.

At first Catherine was offended by this matter, but her father, Ferdinand II of Aragon, convinced her daughter to accept her divorce and return to Castile, stating that she would be free in her home instead of being locked in a poor castle. In the end, Catherine had to accept her divorce and that same year she returned to Castille, being received by her old father and her nephew, Ferdinand of Austria.

Catherine visited her sister, Joanna known as “Juana la loca” in Tordesillas where they both shared their sorrows and prayed continuously. Joanna surprisingly convinced her father to remarry her sister to another man, stating that she was still young to join Christ and that the words of the "English boy" were an insult to her family.

Ferdinand of Aragon was already a sickly man and he was almost finished, so he was more susceptible. Castile and Aragon had been at enmity with France for years, but these conflicts were costing both countries a toll, so Louis XII of France and Ferdinand II decided to reach an alliance of peace by marrying the dauphin Francis de Valois with the divorced Catherine, who still She was young, beautiful, and menstruated well, despite the rumors of her infertility.

At first, Francisco was engaged to his cousin Claude of France, but Claude died of smallpox in 1511 at the age of 12 and her mother, Anne of Brittany, left her dukedom to her other daughter, Renata, but at the Anne of Brittany passed away, Renata under the influence of her father agreed to leave the duchy of Brittany to her cousin. Francis at the age of 18 agreed to marry the 28-year-old woman, stating that she was beautiful and desirable, as well as knowing the political experience of the infanta and her gifts of governing her in England.

In 1513 Catherine left for France with her entourage and arrived two months later. The betrothed were attracted the moment they met and married two days later in Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

Pero como un niño pequeño harto de sus viejos juguetes, Enrique se canso de Catalina tan solo tres años de su matrimonio y tres bebes muertos al poco de nacer. El rey se busco amantes entre ellas, Elizabeth “Bessie” Blount la cual quedo embarazada y este embarazo fue el motivo que tuvo Enrique para divorciarse de Catalina afirmando que era una mujer estéril y que con ella a su lado jamás podría continuar la dinastía Tudor en Inglaterra.

Al principio Catalina se sintió ofendida por este asunto, pero su padre, Fernando II de Aragón convenció a su hija de aceptar el divorcio y volver a Castilla afirmando que seria libre en su hogar en vez de ser encerrada en un castillo pobre. Al final Catalina tuvo que aceptar el divorcio y ese mismo año volvió a Castilla siendo recibida por su viejo padre y su sobrino, Fernando de Austria.

Catalina visito a su hermana, Juana conocida como “Juana la loca” en Tordesillas donde ambas compartían sus penas y rezaban continuamente. Juana sorprendentemente convenció a su padre de volver a casar a su hermana con otro hombre, afirmando que aun era joven para unirse a Cristo y que las palabras del “niño ingles” eran un insulto hacia su familia.

Fernando de Aragon ya era un hombre enfermizo y estaba casi acabado por lo que era mas susceptible. Castilla y Aragón estaban enemistados con Francia desde hace años, pero estos conflictos estaban costando factura a ambos países por lo que Luis XII de Francia y Fernando II decidieron llegar a una alianza de paz casando al delfín Francisco de Valois con la divorciada Catalina, quien todavía era joven, bella y menstruaba bien pesé a los rumores sobre su infertilidad.

En un principio, Francisco estaba comprometido con su prima Claudia de Francia, pero Claudia falleció a causa de la viruela en el 1512 a los 12 años de edad y su madre, Ana de Bretaña dejo su ducado a su otra hija, Renata, pero al fallecer Ana de Bretaña, Renata por influencia de su padre acepto dejar el ducado de Bretaña a su primo. Francisco con 18 años acepto casarse con la mujer de 28 años afirmando que era hermosa y apetecible, además de conocer la experiencia política de la infanta y sus dotes de gobernación en Inglaterra.

En el 1513 Catalina partió hacia Francia con su comitiva y llego dos meses después. Los prometidos se sintieron atraídos en el mismo momento en el que se conocieron y se casaron dos días después en Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

Desafío 2 — Serina Lich

Cierto día, el pequeño Dios se encontraba emocionado por la carrera que estaba a punto de iniciar.

Contemplaba, desde el cielo, el imponente castillo y sus amuralladas paredes rosadas que, de seguro, sería una pista perfecta. Así que concentró toda su atención en el joven, de aspecto aventurero, que estaba en la meta de salida.

Dios sabía muy bien lo que sentía Max al subir en su monopatín aerodeslizador. Si no ganaba la carrera, no tendría el dinero suficiente para la operación y su hermano mayor, nunca podría volver a despertar de aquel sueño profundo. Entonces Dios, deseo con todas sus fuerzas que su monopatín no dejara de funcionar cuando pasara por los charcos de agua, que dejó la lluvia.

Max ocupó la posición adecuada y las trompetas señalaron el arranque de la carrera. Pequeño Dios gritó al ver que su salida fue perfecta, pero se preocupó cuando Brittany, la doctora, le rebaso en la primera vuelta haciendo mohín por su falta de práctica.

Dios no dejaría que Max perdiera contra esa antipática mujer que no quiso salvar a su hermano, así que “sin querer” salpicó un poco de agua y su aerodeslizador se averió; dejándola fuera de la carrera.

¡Bien!, festejaron a la vez Max y Dios.

Solo faltaban dos vueltas más y obtendría la victoria, pero Max olvidó los obstáculos. Un troncó saltó frente a él ocasionando que perdiera el equilibrio y saliera volando. Apenas pudo aferrarse al monopatín y cuando acordó rendirse, las imágenes de su hermano, postrado en la camilla del hospital, lo llenaron de energía. Entonces tomó impulso y…

—¡Max, toma tu impermeable! —le llamó su madre—. Tenemos que irnos ya al hospital.

—¡Ya voy mami!

El pequeño Dios tomó a Brittany y la colocó, junto a Max, dentro de su caja de juguetes.

Dean/Merit List Recipients

Alvin Community College recognized students for making the Fall 2017 Dean’s and Merit Lists during a reception on February 20.

To be eligible for the Dean’s list students must earn at least a 3.5 grade point average for 12 or more credit hours in a semester and no course with a grade lower than a C. To be eligible for the Merit List, a student must have 7 – 11 college-level semester hours during a semester with a minimum 3.5 GPA with no F or incomplete. College-level courses exclude credit-by-exam, nontraditional, transfer, or developmental courses.

Marcela Trujillo (1969) Artista “Muchas mujeres están usando el cómic para entenderse a sí mismas”

Partió con la pintura, luego vinieron las historietas autobiográficas y, ahora, Marcela Trujillo acaba de lanzar su primera novela gráfica, “Idolo”. Ahí, la autora de “El diario íntimo de Maliki 4 ojos” ficciona uno de sus viajes a una convención de dibujantes en Lima, y mientras el autor nórdico que más admira parece estar prendado con ella, los personajes de los libros que deja en el velador se escapan de las páginas a sus propias aventuras: Maliki y su chancho, Santa Rosa de Lima y Sarita Colonia. Como siempre con Trujillo, “Idolo” no sólo está lleno de humor, sino que es una voz femenina, donde puede reflexionar sobre la importancia de las mujeres en el cómic, la intimidad y la diferencia con el sexo, hasta el frizz implacable de pelo por la humedad de la ciudad. ¿Qué te entrega el comic, y ahora la novela gráfica, que antes no te entregaban otras disciplinas? Creo que el comic me da algo que la pintura no tiene, que tiene que ver con la relación con el público, o el lector. Mis pinturas también tenían mensaje, una narrativa; eran autobiográficas, pero simbolizadas. Y cuando mi pintura dejó de ser autobiográfica y más estética, apareció el comic. Empecé a contar todo con dibujos y texto, y me pasó algo que nunca me pasó con las pinturas: recibía el feedback de la gente. Llegaba a mucha gente. La pintura es más estática y más de elite, y se demora mucho más. El cómic, como se reproduce, llega a todas partes. Y las personas se acercan a uno; empecé a recibir muchos comentarios a través de redes sociales. La pintura genera una cierta solemnidad y respeto y hay una distancia entre el espectador y artista. El comic me da una libertad que la pintura no me da, y una rapidez. A pesar de que me demoré tres años en hacer el libro, los dibujos van saliendo rápido. Eso me gusta mucho, de que la gente pueda leerlo y comentarlo. Es que leyendo “Ídolo” se genera una identificación femenina desde lo más sencillo: por ejemplo, la protagonista está en Lima y varias veces se preocupa del frizz de su pelo, lo que es muy gracioso. (Se ríe) Eso es algo que me regaló el cómic: me dio voz. Y esa voz la use para decir cosas que son mías. Yo tengo una relación con el pudor muy resuelta, lo que me da pudor no es lo que le da pudor a los demás. No me da pudor el cuerpo, o el sexo, sino que otras cosas. Yo aproveché esas voz para decir cosas que me importan, más allá de que sean profundas o para la posteridad, de a diario, la cotidianidad. Lo del pelo lo puse porque es real. Encuentro que es súper ridículo que me guste tener el pelo liso si lo tengo crespo, y necesito una hora para alisarlo. Y digo qué ridícula. Y siempre que me lo aliso pienso lo mismo, tengo la voz que dice qué ridículo, y la que dice tengo que hacerlo. En la presentación del libro en México la Abril Castillo me dijo que le parecía muy interesante el tema del control: cuando ella se quiere alisar el pelo. No quiere comer carne. No quiere tomar la iniciativa. Claro, no quiere perder el control en ningún frente. Yo nunca vi eso; obvio que es un tema en mi vida, pero no hago mis cómics a partir de un tema, a diferencia de otros autores. En la pintura quizás sí. Pero con el cómic estoy liberada de lo conceptual, y es infinito. El tema aparece después, según quién lo lee. Como yo hablo cosas que son parte de mi vida cotidiana, por lo mismo son importantes, y creo que no me pasa solo a mí, sino que a muchas mujeres, porque somos todas muy parecidas.

En el libro muestras un congreso con un panel de mujeres dibujantes con una conversación muy interesante. ¿Cuál es la importancia de tener pares o referentes, siendo que a nivel histórico y masivo el cómic ha sido más dominado por hombres? Es importante. Yo empecé a dibujar cómics porque leí libros de mujeres. Leí muchos libros de hombres por años, pero nunca me dieron ganas de hacer lo mismo. Pero cuando leí el libro de Julie Doucet, por ejemplo, El diario de Nueva York, dije también quiero dibujar esto. O cuando leí a Phoebe Gloeckner, o Aline Kominsky. Para mí fue importante leer esos cómics. Y después de que empecé a dibujar apareció Alison Bechdel, Lucy Knisley, que son mujeres super power. Tienen una característica y es que por el mismo hecho histórico de que ellas no ocuparon ese puesto, y ahora sí, ya tienen la información de antes. Ya se hizo el cómic de superhéroes para entretener, el de aventuras. Entonces dices: qué hago ahora. Y como hemos estado calladas mucho tiempo, tenemos mucha energía y a veces somos mucho más valientes y patudas que los hombres. Estamos más ansiosas, porque los hombres han tenido más tiempo y tienen toda la libertad del mundo.

Es la ansiedad del ¡por fin! Y con la maternidad pasa también; cuando uno tiene un hijo, adquiere un poder casi de superhéroe, y lo ocupamos. Pero a veces se sobre ocupa, porque has sido sometida mucho tiempo, le pones más, y te transformas en “loca” para los hombres o incluso para algunas mujeres. El estereotipo de la “mujer loca”, uno que todas repetimos sin pensar. A mi me interesa hablar de lo que me importa a mí, y eso será importante para los demás. Por ejemplo, cuando uno lee un cómic donde una mujer habla del abuso, como Debbie Drechsler, uno queda para adentro, porque se atrevió a hacerlo y está exorcizando sus demonios. Y le está dando la oportunidad a cualquier mujer que lo lee y ha sido abusada, sin ser capaz de decirlo, para que diga, yo también debería hablar. Se crea una sororidad donde las mujeres pueden imitar la valentía. Eso ocurre mucho en el comic de mujeres.

Meterte en ficción, crear personajes de libro que cobran vida, ¿te dio vértigo? Me dio mucho nervio. No sabía si resultaba, y en el primer capítulo en que aparecen esos personajes, Maliki y el chancho, que se escapan de sus libros, pensaba, ¿tendrá sentido? Nunca había hecho una novela. Me creó mucha angustia, porque nunca lo había hecho, pero cuando pasé esta angustia, lo disfruté mucho. Cuando aparecieron los otros personajes de ficción. El personaje de Santa Rosa de Lima, que es muy graciosa, siempre al borde del éxtasis místico. Cuando lo vio el editor español, me dijo está buena la historia, pero el personaje de la monja no la compro. O cambias la historia, o no hacemos otro libro. Y no publiqué con ellos al final, porque no les gustaba la monja. Para mí representa ese anhelo de la mujer de estar en deseo todo el rato. Creo que de ahí viene para nosotros, culturalmente, el estereotipo de la mujer que vive para el hombre. Y que lo único que quiere es tener felicidad interna, pero para satisfacer al hombre, y para eso tiene que sufrir, no dormir, no comer, pegarse. Ponerse una corona de espinas. ¿Qué de eso tenemos nosotras? ¡Mucho! Hasta el alisarse el pelo es un sufrimiento. Tenemos muy normado el sufrimiento para las mujeres y los hombres no. A una le duelen los ovarios, tiene el parto; nos apropiamos del sufrimiento como si fuera parte de nuestras obligaciones y creo que de ahí viene. Santa Rosa es importante por eso en la historia. Y nunca quise reírme de ella. Porque encuentro que ella representa una parte que yo tengo, y debo acostumbrarme a vivir con eso, así que la vi con compasión. En una entrevista leí que no te sentías feminista y que te diste cuenta en el camino que tus libros finalmente lo eran, porque daban una voz que no existía normalmente. Soy súper reacia a formar parte de grupos políticos, por ejemplo. Y resulta que llegó la Brittany Tullis a Chile, y ella es historiadora, lingüista, norteamericana. Especialista en comic femenino y feminista. Vino a Chile porque tenía dos sujetos de estudio, que era Powerpaola y mi trabajo. En su charla ella mostró mi libro “El diario íntimo”, y le hacía una lectura feminista. Yo quedé para dentro porque nunca lo pensé de esa manera. Los libros son como los hijos, una los hace y tienen vida propia. Su postura dice que esto es feminista, porque se habla desde la mujer, desde su interés, y no es la mujer que tienen un rol para satisfacer al hombre. Pero puedo decir que en mi vida siempre he tenido ese rollo, siempre he sentido que los hombres tienen más derechos que las mujeres, y lo encuentro muy injusto. Me he tratado de construir como una persona independiente, siempre he dicho lo que siento, no he tenido vergüenza. Qué libros de mujeres en novela gráfica recomiendas a alguien que leyó “Ídolo” y quiere seguir explorando. Me gusta mucho “Virus tropical”, creo que es una obra maestra de Powerpaola. Fun home de Alison Blechdel. “Diario de una adolescente” de Phoebe Gloeckner. También “La hoja naranja” de la Sol Díaz, uno de sus libros más lindos que habla de como se pasa del estado de niña a mujer, todos los estereotipos que hay a través de un cuento medio mágico, fue importante ese libro para mí. Frannerd, con “Personas favoritas”, escrito con su marido. Ella tiene una relación consigo misma, se está mirando, pero también a su relación con las cosas, con el mundo material. Y su amor con el manga, lo que no es menor, porque el manga es una gran influencia en las niñas que quieren dibujar. Ella lo transformó en un estilo propio. Lucy Knisley me encanta, también hace diarios. La Margarita Valdés, que hizo un libro que se llama “Chikijet, memorias de una infancia ochentera”. La Paloma Valdivia y el diario de cuando se embarazó, “Es así”, derribando mitos. Muchas mujeres que están usando el comic no solo para entretener, sino para entenderse a sí mismas.

The Queen and Duchess French (1/?)

Catherine de’Medici was the only daughter of Lorenzo II de Medici and Madeleine de La Tour d'Auvergne who died shortly after her birth. Clement VII sought a husband for his beloved niece and Francis I of France offered his second son, the Duke of Orleans, Henry as the little girl's husband. In 1533 the young woman traveled to France and married the prince in the city of Marseilles. Catherine was attracted to her husband, considering him very attractive, but Henry was not attracted or had no interest in the Italian.

While this was happening, Henry VIII of England sought to negotiate a commitment between the dauphin, Francis with his young daughter, Elizabeth Tudor, however the King of France would only accept a marriage with the eldest daughter of the English king, Mary Tudor and that this follow being part of the succession of the throne. Soon after, Mary left for France. The princess she arrived almost a month later to the town of Fuenterrabía where she was waiting for Francis I, the dolphin and the court. The betrothed were quite pleased and Francis came to say that her betrothed had a very sweet face, while Mary had said that her future husband was very tall and with beautiful eyes.

The couple married two days later in 1536 when Maria was 20 years old and Francis 18, marrying in the duchy of Brittany that belonged to the dolphin.

The new dauphine met her brother-in-law, the other children of King Francis, and her sister-in-law, Catherine de’Medici. At first the two liked each other and even had something in common, but especially in religion, both being fervent Catholics. That relationship ended up making water when Maria became pregnant shortly after and gave birth in 1537 to her first child, Henry, who would be King of France as Henry II. The birth of the new heir was a great joy in France and various festivals were held in honor of the dolphin.

Catherine de’Medici was frustrated with the birth of the new prince because she could not get pregnant after three years of marriage, which separated her more from her husband and she became very envious of the happy life of the English princess.

La Reina y la Duquesa Francesa (1/?)

Clemente VII busco algún marido para su querida sobrina y Francisco I de Francia ofreció a su segundo hijo, el Duque de Orleans Enrique como marido de la pequeña.

En 1533 la joven viajo a Francia y se caso con el príncipe en la ciudad de Marsellas. Catherine se sintió atraída por su marido considerándolo muy atractivo, pero Enrique no se sentía atraído o no sentía interés por la italiana.

Mientras esto sucedía, Enrique VIII de Inglaterra busco negociar un compromiso entre el delfín, Francisco con su hija pequeña, Isabel Tudor, sin embargo el rey de Francia solo aceptaría un matrimonio con la hija mayor del rey ingles, María Tudor y que esta siguiera siendo parte de la sucesión del trono. El rey se había casado con su amante Ana Bolena mientras se estaba divorciando de su primera esposa, Catalina de Aragon y todos veían a su única hija, María como la verdadera princesa de Gales.

Al final tras recibir la amenaza del Rey francés de hacer alguna alianza con España, Enrique VIII mando a llamar a su hija que servía a su hermana, Isabel en su castillo en Hatfield. Padre e hija se reunieron en el castillo de Ludlow donde el rey declaro ante testigos la legitimización de su hija mayor como princesa de Inglaterra y aprobando con el embajador de Francia el matrimonio de María con Francisco III de Bretaña.

Tras este acontecimiento a María se les fue devuelta sus posesiones como princesa de Gales y su pensión por este mismo cargo (el cual lo destinaría a su madre, Catalina de Aragon). Poco después María partió hacia Francia. La princesa llego casi un mes después a la localidad de Fuenterrabía donde la esperaba Francisco I, el delfín y la corte. Los prometidos se agradaron bastante y Francisco llego a decir que su prometida tenia un rostro muy dulce, mientras que María había dicho que su futuro esposo era muy alto y de hermosos ojos.

La pareja se caso dos días después en 1536 cuando María tenia 20 años y Francisco 18, casándose en el ducado de Bretaña que le pertenecía al delfín.

La nueva delfina conoció a sus cuñados los otros hijos del rey Francisco y a su cuñada, Catalina de Medici. En un principio las dos se agradaron e incluso tenían una que otra cosa en común, pero sobre todo en la religión siendo ambas fervientes católicas. Aquella relación acabo haciendo aguas cuando María se quedo embarazada poco después y alumbro en 1537 a su primer hijo, Enrique que sería Rey de Francia como Enrique II. El nacimiento del nuevo heredero fue una gran alegría en Francia y se celebraron distintas fiestas en honor a la delfina.

Catalina de Medici estaba frustrada con el nacimiento del nuevo príncipe debido a que ella no lograba quedarse embarazada después de tres años de matrimonio lo que la separo mas de su marido y llego a sentir mucha envidia por la vida feliz de la princesa inglesa.

13 Major Oil Spills Of The Maritime World

Oil spill is the release of oil into the environment. Spilling of crude oil or any oil distilled product ( like gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuels, Stoddard solvent, hydraulic oils, lubricating oils) pollute the surface of the land, air and water environment

Oil spill is a kind of environmental pollution. Oil spill affects marine life for a decade after they occur. The effects are worse if it happens near the coastal communities. Birds, Fishes and other mammals all are affected. The oil penetrates into the structure of birds and the fur of mammals, reducing its insulating ability and making them more vulnerable to temperature fluctuations and much less buoyant in the water. Seas mammals, birds and fishes die if they ingest or inhale the oil. They may suffer deformities like stunted growth, fin abnormalities, fertility problems, etc.

Oil spills also have a negative impact on the local industries. The fishing, shipping and tourism industries often suffer economic losses.

Major Oil Spills

Here is the list of some of the major oil spills in the history of the maritime world.

Gulf War Of Oil Spill

The Gulf War of Oil Spill was one of the largest oil spills in history. It occurred because of the Gulf War. It was not an accident but a deliberate spilling. In 1991, retreating Iraqi forces intentionally released more than 240 million gallons of oil into the Persian Gulf. They did so in order to prevent US forces from landing on the Kuwait beach.

The resulting oil slick ravaged the marine ecosystem of the area. Thousands of seabirds and other endangered species died. A major health hazard on the people was pressed after the spill. The slick reached a minimum size of 101 miles by 42 miles and was 5 inches thick in some areas.

Booms and skimmers were used in order to keep the oil away from the desalination plants, which provided drinking water to residents in the area.

Deepwater Horizon

Deepwater Horizon oil spill is also known as the Gulf of Mexico oil spill or BP oil spill. This oil spill occurred at the Macondo Prospect on April 20, 2010. The BP oil spill is considered the largest marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry and estimated to be 8% to 31% larger in volume than the previously largest, the Ixtoc I oil spill. This accident led to the release of 4.9 million barrels of oil into the sea.

The accident was caused by the explosion at the oil rig. The oil continuously leaked for 85 days until it was plugged. 11 workers died in this accident.

Almost 10 million pounds of oily residue was removed from Louisiana shorelines. It killed vegetation and caused erosion. The oil disaster affected the cellular function of the killfish. A US district court found BP responsible for the spill due to negligence. They had several fines and civil settlements totaling 60 billion dollars. It is still to date one of the most infamous oil spills in the US.

Ixtoc I Oil Spill

Ixtoc I oil spill accident led to the release of 140 million gallons of crude oil into the Bay of Campeche. Ixtoc I was an oil well bring which was being drilled in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico by a government-owned country Pemex in 1979. On June 3, the circulation of the drilling mud failed, causing an oil spill, explosion, and fire that led to the destruction and sinking of the rig.

The spilled oil covered the area of 1100 square miles. It caused severe damage to marine life. To slow down the flow of the oil, mud and sheet balls were dropped into the well. Later the spilled oil was contained using skimming equipment and bonus.

Atlantic Empress

Atlantic Empress Oil Spill

SS Atlantic Empress was a large crude oil carrier built in Denmark and launched in 1974. Just five years later, in 1979, it collided with the Aegean Captain 18 miles off the coast Tobago. It was on its way to Texas while the other oil transport was en route to Aruba. It was owned by the South Gulf Shipping Company of Greece. The collision and fire claimed the lives of 26 of the Empress’s crew members.

Atlantic Empress burnt for two weeks before it sank after it was towed to shore. About 88.3 million gallons of crude oil were spilled into the sea. It was the largest ship-source spill ever recorded. No oil came ashore and no indications of any environmental damage were observed.

Atlantic Empress was the largest ship ever sunk. There wasn’t much cleanup needed because of the climate conditions.

Nowruz Field Platform

This massive oil spill accident took place on February 10, 1983. This oil spill was caused by a tanker ramming into a rig. 1500 barrels of crude oil leaked per day but as it was in the middle of the war zone so the oil spill could not be capped. The platform was attacked by the Iraqi helicopters and the slick caught fire. The rig was eventually plugged in September 1983.

Overall, 80 million gallons of oil spilled. Eleven people lost their lives during the capping. Skimmers and pumps of Norpol (a Norwegian company) were used for the cleanup process.

ABT Summer

ABT Summer Oil Spill

ABT Summer oil spill was loaded with approximately 1.9 million ballers of oil when it exploded just 800 miles off the coast of Angola, Africa. Tanker blew up at random causing the entire ship to start sinking. The cause of the explosion is still unknown. Out of 32 crew members, one died in this accident and 4 members went missing. They were never found and were declared dead.

ABT Summer oil tanker was an Iranian crude oil ship that was built in South Korea. 51-81 million gallons of oil spilled in this accident. The environmental impact was very less compared to what was expected. There was not much to clean up after the oil spill. The tanker burned for three days before sinking. Surprisingly, the oil was broken up by high seas. Along the coast, the action was taken to clean up the spill. It took a large number of workers and machinery to clean it up.

Castillo De Bellver

Castillo De Bellver oil spill started on August 6, 1983. This crude container ship caught fire about 70 miles north-west of Cape Town, South Africa. The tanker was carrying crude oil through an environmentally sensitive area. It was carrying 250,000 tonnes of light crude oil. The vessel was abandoned and broke apart after drifting offshore. Luckily, no human life was lost in this accident. A total volume of 145,000-170,000 tonnes of oil entered the sea.

Although the accident took placed in the area having rich flora and fauna, the environmental damage was less. There was little damage to the local fish market. “Black rain” of oil droplets fell immediately to the east of the spill during the first 24 hours on wheat-growing and sheep-grazing fields, but no long term damage was recorded.

Amoco Cadiz

Amoco Cadiz Oil Spill

Amoco Cadiz oil spill took place on March 16, 1978. It was a very large crude carrier (VLCC) owned by Amoco Transport Corp. On its last journey, the ship was heading for Lyme Bay in the United Kingdom when its rudder and hydraulic system were damaged. Several attempts were made by the German and French tug boats to pull the ship to open waters. But the ship hit a rock and began to leak. The stormy weather resulted in the complete breakdown of the ship. The ship ran aground on shallow rocks off the coast of Brittany.

Amoco Cadiz contained 1,604,500 Barrels of light crude oil. The US NOAA estimates that the total oil spill amounted to 220,800 metric tons of oil. It was listed as the world’s fifth-biggest oil tanker accident. The oil penetrated up to the depth of 20 inches in the sands of affected beaches. The Amoco Cadiz incident resulted in the largest loss of marine life ever recorded after an oil spill of that time.

Taylor Energy

Taylor Energy was an American oil company. Taylor oil spill is an ongoing spill located in the Gulf of Mexico, around 11 miles off the coast of the U.S. state of Louisiana. The spill started in 2004 because of the destruction of a Taylor Energy oil platform during Hurricane Ivan. It was noticed after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill took place.

Satellite imagery shows slicks varying in size, sometimes ranging up to 30 miles in length. These slicks have the potential to impact public marine resources including plankton, fish, birds, mammals, and turtles. As of 2018, it was estimated that 300 to 700 barrels of oil spills in the ocean every day. Taylor Energy has spent as much as $435 million or more decommissioning the site. They contend that nothing can be done to contain the spill.

MT Haven

MT Haven was a VLCC, hired by Troodos Shipping. In 1991, the ship exploded, caught fire and sank off the coast of Genoa, Italy. It became one of the largest shipwrecks in the world. Also, it was one of the worst oil pollution incidents in the Mediterranean Sea. The tanker was carrying 144,000 tons of crude oil.

The reason for the explosion was poor maintenance of the ship. Six crew members lost their lives in this accident. About 45 million gallons of oil spilled for 12 years. The oil spill caused severe damage to the marine life of the sea. Booms and skimmers were employed by a private company that recovered approximately 35,700 barrels of oil.

Odyssey Oil Spill

Odyssey was a Liberian tanker that sunk into the ship because of the explosion. This accident happened on November 10, 1988, 700 miles off Nova Scotia. The tanker suddenly exploded and broke into two, catching fire. The explosion occurred because of the storm. The spilled oil caught the flames and burned, so no oil reached the coastal area.

27 crew members went recorded missing and were assumed dead. About 43 million gallons of crude Brent oil spilled into the sea. There was no cleanup required as most of the oil had burnt away. The impact on marine life was also less. Only the fishes, birds were affected.

Exxon Valdez Oil Spill

Exxon Valdez oil spill was a massive oil spill that occurred on March 24, 1989, in Prince William Sound, an inlet in the Gulf of Alaska, the U.S.

The ship was carrying 53 gallons of crude oil when it struck Bligh Reef. The impact of the collision tore the hull of the ship and 11 million gallons of oil was spilled.

It was the worst oil spill in the history of the U.S. until the Deepwater Horizon oil spill that occurred in 2010. The oil slick covered 1300 miles of the coastline and killed hundreds of seabirds, otters, seals, and whales. Exxon paid about 2 billion dollars for the cleanup and 1.8 billion dollars for habitat restoration and personal damages related to the spill.

Kolva River Spill

Kolva River is a river that is surrounded by the cities in Russia such as Perm and Usinsk, Russia. They are in the Komi Republic. Kolva River oil spill took place on August 6, 1983. The cause of this oil spill was poor maintenance of the pipeline. Oil pooled around the rupture site for eight months. It was contained by the dam, but the dam ruptured letting the oil spill into the river.

About 2 million barrels of oil spilled into the river. Nobody died but the people of the village Kolva report digestive and respiratory organ issues along with the infectious disease. It is considered one of the major oil spills in Russia.

These were the major oil spills that took place in the maritime time world over time. These all resulted in the loss of marine life, loss of human life and economic loss.
