Three Reasons to Visit Punta del Este in Uruguay
Tumblr media
Punta del Este is a tourist destination in Uruguay, South America. Along Uruguay’s Atlantic coastline, just east of the Bay of Maldonado, Punta del Este stretches 40 miles and comprises several neighborhoods and small towns. The population swells during the busy summer months between December and March.
Several attractions attract tourists to Punta del Este, including:
Cultural events and celebrations. Residents of Punta del Este organize several carnivals during the year. On a carnival night, the resort’s main avenue, La Gorlero, turns into a catwalk with glamorous parades. Thousands of spectators flock to it and the restaurants and nightclubs, where tourists can enjoy local music, culture, and cuisine.
Art. Punta del Este has several artistic attractions, such as La Mano, a giant hand emerging from the sand at Playa Brava, created by Mario Irrazabal in the 1980s. Tourists can visit Casapueblo, a castle near the sea built by Carlos Paez, where guests can attend a daily sunset ceremony. In addition, Punta del Este has several museums, including the Sea Museum, with more than 5,000 specimens.
Outdoor activities. Tourists at Punta del Este can swim with sea lions at Isla de Lobos, boat ride, jet ski, kite surf, or paddle board. It also provides on-land activities, including golf, running, cycling, and tennis.

Trying to remember where the catwalks are in my old neighbourhood (2023), site-specific vinyl lettering
The Bowness Community Association ARTS (Artistic Residents' Talent Share) program hosted me and my work for the months of March and April of 2023.
These images are of works I placed around the community centre, which include observations, confessions, and other snippets of poetic text. The pieces are about 8 x 8 in. in size, and located in places such as sliding doors, bathroom mirrors, and windows to the hockey arena.
These quiet works ask passersby to come closer and engage with the writing. The texts are a mix of poetic, arbitrary, and humourous messages. They can be read as observations- sort of like diary excerpts- about everyday things. They are specific and personal, but, at the same time, general enough for the viewer to potentially relate to them. Maybe they connect to an experience or give the viewer pause as they navigate though their day.

Brady Theater
Though you might not think of Tulsa as a hotbed of high-class culture, T-Town has actually played host to many history's most reputable entertainers, most of whom have played the city's Brady Theater. In its nearly one-hundred-year history, the theater has featured performances by such unforgettable names as Katharine Hepburn, Benny Goodman, Helen Hayes, Duke Ellington, Buddy Holly, and the Marx Brothers. Sadly, most of us will never get the chance to bask in the charismatic presence of our favorite classic entertainers, as they've not only left the Brady's stage, but also this mortal plane. That is, of course, unless you like opera.
One of the most highly regarded performers to appear at the "Old Lady of Brady" was the "Golden Voice" himself, Italian tenor Enrico Caruso. On October 17, 1920, the man who is considered one of the most significant vocal artists in history made his first and only appearance in Tulsa. In the flesh, anyway. Those who've worked at the Brady, and many who've visited, are adamant that Caruso has been making curtain calls for years now.
Caruso died shortly after his visit to Oklahoma from an illness that was apparently exacerbated by the state's dreadful fall climate. The concert promoters who organized the tenor's visit wanted to share the local culture with the esteemed performer by showing him an oil field. They drove Caruso out to Sepulpa in the west and blustery weather that befell the day of his performance. Following what must have been an exceptionally stirring field trip for the cultured Italian, the group turned back for Tulsa, but all three of the vehicles in which they were traveling broke down on the way. As a result, Caruso was forced to hitchhike in the cold, wet weather.
Caruso made it back in time for his performance that night, but it would prove to be one of his last. Less than two months later, he suffered a throat hemorrhage during a concert in New York after which he made only a handful of appearances as his health deteriorated, reportedly as a result of his ill-fated car trip in Tulsa. After months of suffering from a painful lung ailment, Caruso died in August 1921.
Since it was evidently his visit to the Brady that was to blame, it's said that Caruso returned to the theater postmortem to rattle patrons' nerves in retribution. Stagehands regularly hear noises in the theater when no one else is around. Sometimes, curtains move on their own. A local radio station even once held a séance at the theater, and although they were unable to identify the source of an otherworldly presence, participants were sure they had detected one.
Still, Caruso may not be the only one roaming the theater's halls. A despondent stagehand is said to have hung himself up in the catwalks several years ago and reportedly attends every show. Plus, the Brady played a central role during the Tulsa Race Riots of 1921, in which the building was supposed to serve as a safe haven for black residents, although it purportedly turned into a makeshift detention center into which some six thousand people were herded and subsequently mistreated. As many as three hundred people were unaccounted for when everyone was released, many of whom are said to have been killed, their bodies either burned in the furnace or buried in the basement. So even if Caruso himself isn't making repeat performances like they say he is, there are plenty of other spirits with reason to haunt the theater.

"It's a model", Philippe Munda Munda is a strange creature based in a flat on the Avenue du Prado in Marseille. It's a place where he lives, and a space where he has set up a creative initiative called Salon du Salon. A place where artists and residents works on exhibitions projects and publications, both printed as well as on the web. ( www.instagram.com/salon_du_salon ).
Munda previously worked with the fashion world. As a photographer, he moved to the rhythm of the catwalks and other photo shoots, a player in an exuberant fauna. With this exhibition, Munda presents a self-portrait through the people he has met: women and men with whom he has shared moments in life, flats, intensities, passions and, of course, love...
Philippe Munda claims to work 'from life', with stagings in which the strict arrangement of the space underlines the adhesion of the subjects to the surroundings, as well as the bodies to the furniture, revealing the photographer's interest in style.
It's a model is a focus on images from his life in development.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally, this is my forth illustration, for this illustration I decided to illustrate Louis Vuitton SS24 London Fashion week look. The spring/summer 24 collection felt travel-inspired and adventurous. Nicolas Ghesquière plays with layered volumes to create airy silhouettes and tailored ensembles, each embracing a different facet of femininity, pairing leather bomber jackets with ruffled skirts and ’00s-inspired chunky belts in black and monogrammed leather.
The first artist I decided to collaborate with was Grace Ciao. She is a Singapore based fashion illustrator and best known for her work Bloom Belles which communicate the natural beauty of flowers and connects viewers by making them experience nature in new and surprising ways. She uses a combination of hand-drawn lines and watercolour brushstrokes with real, three-dimensional flowers. There I decided to incorporate a three dimensional aspect into my illustration.
The second artist I chose to incorporate into my own illustration is Jamie Lee Reardin, a Canadian-born although L.A. based artist known for her striking character design work in the fashion industry. She studied Fashion Communications and Design at Ryerson University, where she studies advanced illustration. Reardin creates a heady concoction of fashion, fantasy and Goth including long necks and stick-thin silhouettes. Dior spotted her and appreciated her works by appointing her as the resident artist for the brand. Since then, Lee Reardin has gone on to work with the best names in the fashion industry viz. Burberry, Barbie, Nike, Prada, Swarovski, Salvatore Ferragamo amongst others. therefore I attempt to include the overly round, shorts faces with the exaggerated long necks into my illustrations to showcase her work.
For this illustrations I began by drawing the face, entirely, inspired by Jamie Lee Reardin, I really enjoy how the head is almost the same widths as the body however still remains proportional. I then added a three dimensional garment to my illustration. I began by adding pleats to both layers of the skirts and the dying them a light pink. Furthermore, I separated the top into three sections and sewing together to create a corset look similar to that of the design. Afterwards I added straps and a pleated skirt to the corset to crest more layers. Overall I really enjoyed how this illustration turned out.
As a result of Grace Ciao using real three dimensional flowers, I attempted to incorporate this into my background. Therefore I used real life orange flowers to link to, not only the artist but also the background in the catwalk.

Paris Fashion Week SS24
Here is the final one of my four catwalk looks. For my interpretation on Paris Fashion Week SS24, I explored Denyse Mushikiwabo wearing Balmain in the style of Jamie Lee Reardin and Zhenya Z. The aesthetic of this collection from Balmain is deeply rooted from the glamour of the 1980s with a running motif of roses explored throughout the garments. In a sense, this event really evoked the true powerful nature of the Balmain woman. As the models walked down the runway, they looked like heroines of Pedro Almodóvar’s classic films. In particular I chose this design due to the structured silhouette in which is covered in dimontes featuring 3D elements in which I really enjoyed illustrating.
One of the artists I chose was Jamie Lee Reardin. Jamie Lee Reardin is an Illustrator and artist who lives and works in Los Angeles. She studied Fashion Communications and Design at Ryerson University, where she focused her studies on Advanced Illustration. When she moved to Los Angeles she soon became known for her stylised character design work in the fashion industry. She was a former Artist in Residence for Dior Beauty, and the creator behind the New York City Ballet’s first-ever illustrated marketing campaign. Jamie Lee Reardin has collaborated with some of the world’s most iconic brands including Prada, Dior and Nike. With her inspiration rooted the Disney villain Cruella de Vil, a childhood obsession with Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice and a rare Picasso exhibition poster. Her hand-painted array of unusual characters are vibrant, peculiar, and consistently clad in haute couture. Infatuated with the process of traditional animation, Jamie also loves transforming her illustrations into charming short animations. For this illustration I was inspired by Jamie Lee Reardins unique character figure she creates featuring the long necks, elongated figures and "squashed" faces. Therefore I attempted to incorporate this into my illustration to showcase my inspiration from her.
The other artist I decided to use was Zhenya Z. A fashion Illustrator and architect, her aesthetic is created through her neat and elegant lines, filled with eye-catching and vibrant colours that capture each of her subjects' spirit, transforming them into a unique illustration. Zhenya Z works with some amazing companies such as Condé Nast, Grazia Italy and Australia, GarageNYC, L'Oréal Paris, Revlon and many more. She further taught illustrating at design schools around the world and has featured in a variety of magazines including Harper's Bazaar and Beauty Hub Magazine. For this illustration I was inspired by how Zhenya Z uses coloured backgrounds for her pieces as well as the use of pastels. I therefore applied this to my illustration as well as trying to attempt to create the "half finished" look she so effortlessly shows.
For this illustration I used pastels in which I was initially not a huge fan of however for this illustration especially as it was on a fairly dark background I really liked how bright and vivid the pastels were on the paper and the interesting texture they created. in addition, I think they created a really nice blend and gradient for the skin tone creating a rather 'realistic' looking piece
In conclusion, I really like this piece and the presentation as a whole. I love how to two artists styles merge together so seamlessly and how the pastels create a new view of this stunning dress by Balmain.

After making its grand debut at the The World Forever Changes Barbenheimer 7 21 23 Shirt But I will love this Cannes Film Festival, Wes Anderson’s new film Asteroid City made its New York City premiere last night—and the star studded cast came out for the red carpet affair. A listers such as Margot Robbie, Bryan Cranston, Tom Hanks, and Scarlett Johansson all made a cameo on the glitzy step and repeat. But the night’s most head turning fashion moment came courtesy of Maya Hawke, who chose an unexpected accessory for her look A bejeweled swim cap. Hawke wore Prada’s black sequined dress with a square neckline and wide pleated skirt—but it was her embellished headwear that really made the look. Instead of a traditional chapeau, the fitted cap had her looking ready for a dip in the pool—yet she somehow totally pulled it off. Its shimmering treatment made the accessory feel elevated, and it added a dash of whimsy to her otherwise streamlined ensemble. It’s not the first time the swim cap has gone high fashion, either A few years ago, labels such as Dior, Chanel, and Valentino all sent them down the catwalk.
Tumblr media
Photo Getty ImagesThe question is Would you rock an evening swim cap for your next gala or soirée? Only the The World Forever Changes Barbenheimer 7 21 23 Shirt But I will love this brave will attempt it. Clearly, Hawke gets an A for risk taking. And an A+ for somehow making it feel red carpet worthy, too. At this point, Beyoncé’s Renaissance world tour is part concert, part extended exercise in seeing just how many custom looks one pop star can commission and pack. Queen Bey has upended the typical stadium show model and turned it into an ever changing format full of surprises and new looks. Nearly every tour stop so far—there are 51 dates on the books in total, as of right now—has featured a new never been seen look designed by some of the biggest names in contemporary fashion. Off White, Balmain, Brandon Blackwood, and on and on. What you may not have noticed, however, is that Bey often honors the country she’s in by wearing a designer who calls that nation home Jacquemus for Marseille, France (the designer’s hometown) Alexander McQueen, David Koma, Robert Wun, and Stella McCartney for the singer’s five night residency in London custom Fendi in Barcelona that featured designs pulled from Spanish artist Antonio Lopez. It’s the pop star’s version of fashion diplomacy. Using fashion as a medium to silently signal a connection and appreciation towards a culture or community is nothing new, but it’s more usually the territory of royals (see Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle) and political figures (first lady Jill Biden being one great example). But then again, Beyoncé, with over 300 million followers on Instagram, is her own kind of head of state. The full throated amplification of international voices feels even more poignant in a post COVID landscape. Only a mere few years ago, such a large scale world tour, bringing together thousands of people, was hard to imagine happening again.

Harry Styles Receive A Banner For His 15 Sold-Out Shows In MSG.
As we all know Harry Styles just finished his 15-show sold-out residencies in Madison Square Garden, where this iconic arena has been packed with fans singing and dancing to Harry throughout the whole 15 shows. Reports show he is doing more shows in one month than many other artists would do in a year (ps. Thanks harry for letting us enjoy you all this time). "This guy's music is not offensive. There's something familiar in the DNA of his music. He's likable across the board and he knows that, and he keeps it going. I think that's really fresh, and if I might be so bold, part of the genius of his success has to do with the collective ambition of leaning into who he really is naturally," said Darryl Tookes) for CBS news report about Harry.
In the final show for the historic 15-night run in New York, the Garden raised a banner to the rafters commemorating his record-setting run of 15 sold-out. Also, the garden made sure each seat had its feather boa, officially making the arena as Harry’s House. “Any time that you come to Madison Square Garden and you see that, remember it’s because of you. That is ours.” Harry said after openly weeping and taking a tissue from a fan near the catwalk (I can’t stop crying after watching that video). Styles is now the third music artist to have a banner hanging in Madison Square Garden Rafters.
Harry, we are all so proud of you and we love you!
See you later for more updates from Harry.
Love, Martina.

Charles Turner, Marcus Scott & Sean Mason in MELANIN or THE IN CROWD July 31, 2021 at Catskill’s Bridge Street Theatre
A Brand-New Musical in Concert at Catskill’s Bridge Street Theatre
Tumblr media
Wrapping up a recent Artists’ Residency at the Catwalk Institute with pianist/composer Sean Mason and playwright Marcus Scott, Brooklyn-based vocalist and composer Charles Turner will present a one-night only “tasting” from the project they’ve all been creating together. This will be the very first airing of selections/songs from “Melanin or The In-Crowd”, an exciting new musical theatre piece in its nascent stages, to be performed live at Catskill’s Bridge Street Theatre on Saturday evening July 31 at 8:00pm.
Over the course of a weekend, a cadre of young, upscale, globetrotting professionals gather for one last hurrah in and around NYC’s lounge scene. Celebrating the newfound success of one of their own who has received a lucrative job offer overseas, the coterie spends an unforgettable weekend, touring various nightclubs in an endless cavalcade of booze, hookups and cheap thrills.
Inspired by the classic golden age MGM Hollywood musicals, but filtered through a modern lens, this splashy new musical encompasses a variety of musical styles such as blues, jazz, swing, big band, jazz fusion, progressive soul, psychedelic soul, cinematic soul, Sophisti-pop, quiet storm, urban, doo-wop, hip-hop soul, neo-soul, alternative R&B, funk, dancehall, reggae, highlife and afro pop. “Melanin or The In-Crowd” is a postmodern coming of age rom-com that explores themes including millennials and the youth of America, materialism, consumerism, capitalism and commodification, classism, colorism, selfishness, respectability politics, depersonalization and dating in the digital age, sexism, sexual freedom, and modern love, all through the prism of black bourgeois culture.
The multi-faceted Turner has performed at such venues as Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Birdland, Smoke Jazz club and the historic Minton’s Playhouse in Harlem. International performances include PizzaExpress in London, Sunset/Sunside in Paris, Sala Clamores in Madrid, and other venues abroad from Seoul, South Korea to Wellington, New Zealand. His passion is to bring swing and jazz to listeners of all generations, carrying the Spirit of Harlem and the torch of the past into the present day for music lovers and dancers throughout the world to experience, embrace, and enjoy. This new collaboration with pianist/composer Sean Mason and playwright Marcus Scott extends Turner’s range even further and promises to be an event to remember.

Maria Blaisse (b 1944, Amsterdam) graduated at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy Amsterdam 1968. Two years later she was a participant in the design studio of Jack Lenor Larsen New York. After this she did research on traditions of textile techniques and natural dyeing of fibers in South America for 2 years.
Her projects can be understood as sculptures or costumes. In many cases, it is difficult to determine which is in control: the body or the form. Perhaps more clearly than any other artist, Blaisse resides firmly between the disciplines of art, design, textiles, and fashion. Her work is an investigation of form and material. The results have found homes in the theater, on the fashion catwalk, and in the art gallery.

New York High Line designer to create raised park on disused railway in Camden
US studio James Corner Field Operations has won a competition to convert a kilometre-long section of disused railway in central London into "a garden in the sky" named the Camden Highline.
Informed by the New York High Line, which was designed by James Corner Field Operations with US architecture studio Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the Camden Highline will run from Camden to King's Cross.
The London version of the highly successful New York linear park will be designed by James Corner Field Operations in collaboration with local studio vPPR Architects.
Top: the Camden Highline is planned for a stretch of disused railway. Above: it will be built in central London
The park will be built on a section of railway viaduct that was abandoned around 30 years ago when a length of four-track line was reduced to double-track.
Located eight metres above ground, the raised park will be accessed by a series of staircases positioned along its route.
"Camden is such an extraordinary place, a vibrant, hip, and diverse community that will soon enjoy an amazingly unique, public green thread that ties its various communities together in ways both revelatory and transformative," said James Corner, lead designer at James Corner Field Operations.
"We could not be more excited to work with residents and stakeholders to create a one-of-a-kind elevated park along the viaduct that speaks to the magical symbiosis of nature, culture, arts, and community."
The park will run alongside an operational railway
Much like the original High Line in New York, the linear park will have a timber walkway along its length.
Sections of the walkway, which will be separated from the still operational tracks by a perforated fence, will contain picnic tables, conversation pits, grandstand seating and trampolines.
Alongside the walkway, there will be various planters containing birch and oak trees, butterfly gardens and perennials. Hanging vines will be planted to grow over the edge of the viaduct.
The Camden Highline team plans to create a plant-filled walkway
James Corner Field Operations and vPPR Architects' design was chosen from five shortlisted teams bidding to create the raised park.
The studios will now work with London artist Hew Locke, community consultant Street Space and Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf, who designed the gardens for the New York High Line, to seek planning permission for the park.
"Camden Highline has the potential to become a really important new asset for the local community in Camden and people across the capital," said London mayor Sadiq Khan.
"This is exactly the sort of innovative, environmentally sustainable and locally-driven project which could make an important contribution to London's recovery from the pandemic. I really look forward to seeing these ambitious plans take shape."
The High Line in New York is an elevated park that was built on a section of abandoned railway on the west side of Manhattan. The first two-kilometre section of the park opened in 2009 with a second section that doubles its length following in 2011.
The park became so popular that by 2012 the New York Times said it had become a "become a tourist-clogged catwalk".
A third stretch of the High Line opened in 2014 and a further extension to connect the park to Penn Station was announced earlier this year.
Since the completion of the High Line, projects from the MVRDV's "plant village" in Seoul to the Atlanta BeltLine have tried to emulate its success. In London Diller Scofidio + Renfro designed an elevated linear park called The Tide on the Greenwich Peninsula.

Trip to Chinatown
Entering the third week of class excursions, I was able to tour one of Chicago’s most historic and ethnic neighborhoods, Chinatown.  The location of the city’s Chinatown was not always located on the south side.  Originally Chinese immigrants arrived in Chicago only after the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad, with the influence of harsh ethnic violence found on the west coast of the United States (Kiang, 1992).  Enclaves were initially formed in Chicago’s Loop, with a quarter of the Chinese population residing there; slowly the newly migrated Chinese found acceptance from their new neighbors and Chinese business sprouted throughout the city (Kiang, 1992).  Although the Chinese were experiencing success in the booming industry center of Chicago, renewal of the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1892 amplified discrimination to the Chinese communities.  Due to the increasing and frightening racism, the Chinese communities fled south of the loop near Armour Square.  This push to the south side was aided by the oppressive taxes applied to Chinese land and business owners; even Chinese homeowners felt the economic impact of the governance targeted against them (Ling, 1956)
What is now considered, ‘New Chinatown’ is the southern haven Chinese immigrants were able to build and grow.  The neighborhood is relatively small and walkable, being bounded to the northwest by the southern branch of the Chicago river.  Running from its northernmost point on 18th Street, south to the Stevenson Expressway along 26th Street.  It stretches from its easternmost claim running along the redline of the ‘L’ rail lines to the west being bordered by the Dan Ryan Expressway.  The neighborhood, although minute in size, is rich in activities for visitors to enjoy.  On my trip to Chinatown I was able to visit the New Chinatown Library, explore Ping Tom Memorial Park, walk through the Chinatown Square and mall, tour the Chinese-American Museum of Chicago, and enjoy the numerous artistic and architectural landmarks scattered throughout the neighborhood.

Although this new Chinatown has been standing decades, the inevitable development and gentrifying nature of cities endanger the culturally authentic neighborhood.  Pressured by McCormick Place from the east, new hotels and entertainment functions raise the living standards of the area (Ecker, 2019).  Rising rents in the adjacent neighborhood to the west of Pilsen also intensify increasing wealth gaps.  Most salient to the neighborhood is the newly acquired sixty-two acre plot of riverfront land located just north of Chinatown.  This land was purchased for seven billion dollars, with intentions for a development project to emplace ten-thousand new residential units (Ecker, 2019).  What is most concerning for this existing population is the lack of wealth accumulated in the neighborhood.  A majority of the household incomes in Chinatown earn less than fifty-thousand dollars a year.  With increasing interest in Chinatown from outside investment as a potential new key sector connecting the periphery neighborhoods to the central business district and loop; existing residents must recognize and prepare for the looming increase in economic activity to come.
One exemplary model of the neighborhood’s ability to combat against external development is the construction of the New Chinatown Library.  Designed by the same architects who created the One World Trade Center in New York City, and the Centennial Tower in San Francisco, the library is renowned for its beauty and design, as well as, the sustainable architecture embedded in its arrangement (Clark, 2016).  The building was designed with community input in mind, utilizing the principles of the Chinese design style of feng shui (Clark, 2016).  Upon first entrance of the building, I was astounded by the design and function of the library.  Incredibly different from the library I am accustomed to at home or even found on my campus, the building allows bountiful amounts of sunlight to enter.  The books are organized as in a traditional library, but many of the books found on the shelves of this library were published in Chinese languages.  When walking up to the second floor, you are overwhelmed by the view of the city’s skyline.  The library displays a large ornate mural, filled with traditional Chinese designs, and gorgeous coloring detail.  Also displayed in the library are pictures illustrating significant Chinese accomplishments in the city of Chicago.  One note about the library was I imagined the building to be quite larger inside, because grandness of the building from the outside, but the internal space was  underwhelming.

After my exploration of the library, I ventured north in the neighborhood to explore Ping Tom Memorial Park.  Along my walk to the Ping Tom Park I encountered the Chinatown Square and Mall.  In the square Chinese zodiac figures are littered, displaying birth years and traits of persons belonging to a certain zodiac.  After a brief search of my birth year, I was able to find my Chinese zodiac sign, the dragon.  The dragon as depicted in the description, is the most mythical of the zodiac signs, with dragon people being characterized as confident and enthusiastic individuals.  They are perceived to have reputations of loud mouths, but in actuality are soft-hearted and intelligent.   It is noted that dragon individuals excel at right brain activities such as artistry and writing.  Also located in the square is a large stage for performances to be held for the community (Kennedy, 2002).  On the opposite side of the stage along Archer Street one can locate the large Immigration Mosaic.  The mosaic depicts illustrations of Chinese immigration, with ships representing the trip across the Pacific Ocean for many immigrants, as well as, images of trains to symbolize the honorable work of the Chinese immigrants who constructed the transcontinental railroad.

The mall was something quite unique and a foreign concept to my understanding of stripmalls.  In the Chinatown Mall a two story system is utilized with catwalks along the second floor, for customer access to business.  Numerous businesses and economic functions practice out of the mall; dining, leisure, and exercise sites are just a few of the businesses one can find.  The mall is a refreshing break from the city.  It incorporates plenty of greenery through the use of trees and flowers along the business fronts.  The Chinatown Square and Mall provide much needed promotion of cultural retention in the neighborhood, while simultaneously stimulating the local neighborhood economy.

Finally, after the brief detour through the square, I headed on my way towards Ping Tom Memorial Park.  Originally the site was utilized as a Chicago and Western Indiana Railroad yard, and was not acquired by the Chicago Park district until late in the twentieth century (Chicago Park District, 2020).  During the period of time prior to attainment of the land Chinatown was plagued by a complete lack of open green space and recreational functions for the community.  The ultimate tragedy that stemmed from this lack of park space was two entire generations of children and families in Chinatown had zero access to a neighborhood facility (Chicago Park District, 2020).
Beginning in 1998, the Chicago Park District transformed the once harsh, industrial landscape to the inviting, green space that stands today.  The park incorporates a playground for small children, as well as community gathering areas.  Tom Ping park also offers immaculate views of the city’s skyline, and has cemented many walking trails for visitors to enjoy.  The park emphasizes the cultural value of the Chinese community and integrates Chinese design elements throughout the park.  Even a few intricate artistic murals can be spotted in the park as well.

The name of the park remembers and honors the man who pressured and advocated for the need of the recreational commons, Ping Tom; who passed away shortly before the opening of the site.   Tom who spent his life living in Chinatown was the formulator of the Chinese American Development Corporation, this private firm created the previously regarded Chinatown Square (Chicago Park District, 2020).  On top of his development works, Ping Tom was an active civic and cultural leader to the neighborhood; he engaged and fostered relationships, even acting as an advisor to U.S. senators, Illinois governors, and mayors of the city.

In full honesty the entrance to the park was anything like I had ever seen before.  Prior to entering the park you are encountered with railroad tracks that one must cross prior to entrance.  It is important to be aware of your surroundings during this crossing, as the train line remains active for trade and commerce.  Upon entrance of the park all patrons will be greeted by the large pagado-style pavilion found near the park’s river edge, along with the imposing bronze bust of Ping Tom.  Walking north along the river located underneath the highway two large murals are painted along the supporting beams.  The murals depict traditional Chinese artworks illustrating natural landscapes and ornate flowers.  In person the murals are massive and quite detailed, they provide a refreshing renovation to the blighted highway that cuts through the park.  Continuing just north of the murals a uninterrupted view of the city’s skyline can be seen.

The Ping Tom park was truly a hidden gem and a pleasant escape from the industrial and urban environment Chicago creates.  Although the entrance is a bit peculiar, any person attending the park will undoubtedly experience the beauty in the park.  To note as well, was how surprisingly quiet the park was.  Despite being surrounded by industrial infrastructure, the highway and rail line had a negligible impact on the park, but I must admit, on my first attempt at exiting the park I was prohibited from doing so due to a train.
To end my trip around the neighborhood I headed towards the Chinese-American Museum of Chicago to learn more about the origins of the neighborhood.  Along my way I was able to see the Chinatown Gate, which symbolizes the entrance to Chinatown.  The gate was constructed in 1975, designed to reflect similar characteristics to gates found in Beijing.  The Chinese characters displayed atop the gate translate to mean, “the world belongs to the commonwealth” (Male, 2020).  Chinatown Gate was implemented in order to promote increased unity and intensified cultural exchange in the neighborhood.  The gate is quite spectacular and provides a grand entrance to Chinatown, a worthy entrance to a community full of rich culture and trade.

Passing the gate, I arrived at the museum.  The Chinese-American Museum mission preaches for the appreciation of Chinese-American culture by means of education and through exhibitions.  The museum aims to preserve the history of the culture, as well as, the future (Chinese American Museum of Chicago, 2020).  The museum was compiled on two floors.  On the first floor, pictures, decorations, clothing, jewelry, and many other traditional Chinese artifacts were presented.  What stood out to me most significantly were the wooden carvings hung along the walls.  Traditionally known as the folk craft of Guangdong, carving styles illustrate flowery, layered scenes depicting generally historical events and legend.  The Guangdong carvings located in the museum were massive, and it was apparent the laboring efforts required to create such a work of art.
Tumblr media

On the second floor of the museum, a theatre can be located; in which a brief informational video is presented showcasing staple Chinese cultures and customs, along with discussing the historical founding of the neighborhood.  The video was illuminating and educational, presenting the history of Chinatown quite well.  Found on the second floor as well are depictions of successful Chinese-owned businesses.  Early in their settlement to Chicago, the Chinese population discovered laundry services and facilities required little capital to start and the skills required were easy to learn.  Because of these two factors within a span of fifty years the number of Chinese operated laundromats from two, in 1872, to nearly five-hundred, by 1926 (Chinese American Museum of Chicago, 2020).  Displayed in the museum’s laundry are a manual cash register, a business license from 1959, as well as, typical laundry accessories, such as irons, sprayers, a darning machine, and spindles of twine.

Beginning my trip I was unsure of what impression Chinatown would leave me with, after my first thorough visit.  Initially I imagined Chinatown to be noisy and busy, with highways circling the neighborhood, and the red line ‘L’ track running on its boundary; but this was not my lasting memory of the neighborhood.  As I explored more I was able to recognize the escape that Chinatown provides from Chicago.  The New Chinatown Library provides excellent educational resources to the community, while also promoting the use of sustainable infrastructure in further development of the neighborhood.  Chinatown Square and Mall stimulates the local economy for the neighborhood, simultaneously providing a gathering place for its residents.  The implementation of Ping Tom Memorial Park was a much dire need for the community, providing green space and recreation.  The Ping Tom park in my opinion provides the greatest experience of any park I have visited in Chicago.  Chinatown is a deeply cultural neighborhood and this is extremely important and apparent as one walks through the neighborhood.  As the pressures of gentrification and city development continue to trouble the existing community, it is crucial steps be taken to preserve the neighborhood.  Although this is much to ask and prevent, small actions, like supporting a small business or leaving a donation at the Chinese-American Museum, can go to support the community and uphold the culture built in Chinatown.
