But in all seriousness it is very interesting seeing the reactions The Color Purple draws from Black men. When the book came out they swore that it was gonna set us back and that it was meant to bash them. The same thing happened with the movie and now it’s happening with the musical. They don’t like being held accountable for anything. Like we can’t not address the things that did and do happen to Black women. The abuse we face and the situations that are very real and very important. And no this isn’t a generalization. Y’all know who you are. A lot of dogs have been hit and they are definitely hollering.

I’ve also seen ppl saying that Nettie should be played by a dark skin actress but here’s the thing with that. We know the musical is closer to the the book than the movie is, and in the book Nettie’s skin tone isn’t really specified. We can use context clues but there’s still no sure answer. However, Celie is deemed to be ugly due to her being dark skin while words like pure and innocent are used to describe Nettie. You can view that however you want but seeing as how Alice Walker is the one who coined the term colorism I think it was done on purpose.
