Resting (ca. 1885), by J.W. Waterhouse
In the 1880’s, Waterhouse visited Venice several times. The city had become a hype for tourism, as also nicely recorded in the novel “Death in Venice” by Thomas Mann (the movie with the same name, directed by Luchino Visconti, is also highly recommended). Although there are no known paintings of Venetian buildings and very few accounts of his whereabouts, we can now tell that Waterhouse must have spent considerable time there. One piece of evidence forms the striped garments, that in those days were very typical of Venice, as painted in above watercolor.
Other painters that visited Venice in the same period are his friend William Logsdail and the Austrian painter Cecil van Haanen, whose paintings were very popular in England.
