H. Letter (active late 16th c) The Battle of Lepanto, 7 October 1571 National Maritime Museum, Greenwich The Battle of Lepanto, fought on October 7, 1571, was a major naval battle between the Holy League (Spain, Venice, the Papacy, and other Catholic states) and the Ottoman Empire. The Holy League, led by Don Juan of Austria, decisively defeated the Ottoman fleet, marking a turning point in the struggle for control of the Mediterranean Sea. The battle took place in the Gulf of Patras, off the coast of western Greece. The battle was a major victory for the Christian forces, stemming the advance of the Ottomans into the Mediterranean and preventing a potential Ottoman invasion of Europe.
