Another day, another disaster in Celebrity-Land. 

I don’t care much for celebrities these days, but this story exposes several uncomfortable facts about our culture. 

Note that this split is alleged, though potentially supported by photographic evidence. Furthermore, Lady Gaga’s reaction (silence initially) would indicate she was aware of this. 

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga should never have given people the impression that there was something more to their relationship outside of acting. This was grossly irresponsible, acting or none. The fact that Shayk stopped following Lady Gaga on social media speaks volumes as to her discomfort. She has a child with Cooper (whose life has now been turned upside down). I do not endorse having a child outside of marriage, but surely the stability of their family life, not to mention fidelity, should come before appearances and acting? 

Fans who encouraged Cooper to be unfaithful to, or worse, abandon the mother of his child, should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. Believing that a film was a depiction of reality, and riding off an incautiously intimate performance, they seemed fine with upending the safety and stability of a long-term relationship, and depriving a girl of a stable two-parent household. What irritates me is that many of these people pontificate about social justice elsewhere, but see nothing wrong with demeaning valuable bonds of social trust and stability, such as marriage and family. 

I don’t care what fashionable opinion (currently) dictates on this topic. If you want to act, then do so. But outside of acting, your first priority should be protecting and enriching the relationship you have, which means not leaving any opportunity to embarrass your spouse/partner by rumours of an affair. All the more so if you have a child together, as Cooper does with Shayk. 

If we cannot even insist that spouses or partners keep the promises they make to each other, then on what basis do we challenge injustice elsewhere? If we cannot insist that spouses or partners protect their union for the wellbeing of their child, then on what basis do we challenge the abandonment of children elsewhere?

Charity begins at home. If there’s little loyalty or fidelity around us, then we become desensitised to the lack of it elsewhere. 

Lady Gaga has now faced calls from some of her fans to begin a relationship with Bradley Cooper. Evidently, these fans are as craven as they are callous. One could only imagine the uproar if someone suggested that Joe Public or Jane Smith cheat on their significant other in order to satisfy the plot line of a film. But match-making for celebrities, despite the severe personal cost, seems acceptable-- particularly when the celebrities themselves do not draw a clear line between fact and fiction. 

In response, Lady Gaga has denied the affair rumours after splitting from her former fiancé, and now tells her fans to be kind of “f*** off”. 

Methinks that’s too little, too late.

This offers up an interesting line of inquiry into the “democratic” or equalitarian nature of online existence. Lil Nas X, the subject of a viral uprising that shot his hit “Old Town Road” to the top of the charts despite industry push back. Perhaps tho, as Alice Marwick suggests, the influence of the masses is limited to fleeting moments of online. Now that Lil Nas X is within the industry itself, the expectations of celebrity existence will likely shape his previously resistive potential into something more akin to mainstream celebrity culture.
