By now - I’m sure many have heard about the comments made by one hateful Cand*ce Ow*ns, who said that putting Disabled models in ads for clothing is inclusivity gone too far. ⁣ ⁣ I don’t like feeding trolls or giving energy to hate speech, I also don’t believe that representation under capitalism is everything - but I do want to speak from the perspective of a Disabled person who held a lot of shame about my body growing up, who would have been over the moon to see bodies like mine represented in popular culture. ⁣ ⁣ It would have made me feel more confident and less ashamed about my body. ⁣ ⁣ It could have helped me to see beauty in Disability, instead of constantly seeing the narrative that Disability is bad, which society and ableism consistently drives into us - causing layers upon layers of internalized ableism. ⁣ ⁣ It’s just a small part of the battle for inclusion which means a whole lot to 25% of the population. ⁣ ⁣ Yes, Disabled people wear underwear and yes, Disabled people need to be a part of the conversation. ⁣ ⁣ ID Slide 1 / An illustration by me @tovahsfine of @MarshaElleMusic. Marsha is wearing a pink bra and underwear with a garter. Marsha is a Black woman with long black braids. She has a prosthetic right leg. She is holding a pink phone taking a selfie. Bubble letters on the right read “Disabled people wear underwear.”⁣ ⁣ ID Slide 2 / The same illustration but with a tweet on top by @LonelyAllie that reads “Cand*ce Ow*ns saying that wheelchair users being portrayed in clothing ads is ridiculous and "inclusivity going too far" is wild, I swear this woman will do anything to be hateful.⁣ Wheelchair users wear clothes.⁣ That's it. That's the tweet.”⁣ ⁣ ID Slide 3 / A video of Imani Barbarin, (@Crutches_And_Spice) speaking on the topic. Imani is a Black Disabled woman wearing a blue and white sweater and a bonnet. I frequently see a lot of posts that talk about the importance of resting when we need it. And I absolutely agree. Rest should be a priority. ⁣ ⁣ But I also can’t talk about taking time to rest without acknowledging the fact that our current lives under capitalism don’t give a lot of people the opportunity to rest like we should all be granted. ⁣ ⁣ How can people prioritize rest when they need to work countless jobs to pay their rent because the cost of living has risen and the pay for work has not? ⁣ ⁣ How can Disabled people prioritize rest when we are made to jump through hoops to receive any kind of funding to help us just barely survive? ⁣ ⁣ We all deserve rest. We’re not all afforded rest. ⁣ ⁣ I want to live in a world that prioritizes rest.⁣ ⁣ I want to live in a world where *every one* is able to rest when needed and not just those with privilege and money. ⁣ ⁣ ID Slide 1 / An illustration by me @tovahsfine based on a photo of @OhhhhhhhhHoney sitting with her head resting on her hand. “Cats Against Capitalism⁣” ⁣ This post is in dedication to the cat who tried to get into a Japanese art museum and was turned away for being a cat. ⁣ ⁣ The museum then made merch out of the incident and the comments below the post were hilarious, I sent the post to my friend River (@thegrief.witch) who then inspired me to make this poster. ⁣ ⁣ And yes, this will be available to buy in my merch store. ⁣ ⁣ ID Slide 1 / An illustration by me @tovahsfine of my two Black cats Gale Weathers and Sidney Prescott sitting in front of a Monstera Deliciosa with the words Cats against capitalism written above and below them. ⁣ ⁣ ID Slide 2 / The original post by @puncrastinstion of a tweet by @/R__B__K__ on Twitter. I loved this little tweet thread by @NataliaSylv ⁣ ⁣ It hit home in so many ways about the experience of growing up Disabled and how silencing my pain for the sake of others comfort really affected me internally. (Hello #cPTSD)⁣ ⁣ The way we talk to people, especially children, is so important and affects us as we grow. We need to hold space for someone’s pain and allow them to feel it and grieve it instead of celebrating them for being able to withstand the pain without “complaining.” ⁣ ⁣ ID Slide 1 / An illustration by me @tovahsfine of an Asian woman with short pink hair and bangs sitting in her wheelchair. She is wearing a blue sweater and light blue jeans. Her nails are painted purple. There is a Pothos plant hanging from above and the words that read “you silence us for your comfort” are written on the left. ⁣ ⁣ ID Slide 2 / A tweet by @NataliaSylv on top of my illustration that reads “Please: I say this as someone who, as a disabled kid, learned to be silent about my pain & am still trying to unlearn it. don't tell kids you're proud of them for enduring medical procedures w/o "Complaining." Even that word alone implies that us being vocal is a burden on you.”⁣ ⁣ ID Slide 3 / A tweet by @NataliaSylv on top of my illustration that reads “I see this too often for it to be a subtweet. This is a perfect example of how "good intentions" can do so much harm. When non-disabled people call us "brave" & "strong" for what is essentially, us not voicing our very real & valid experiences, you silence us for your comfort.”⁣ ⁣ ID Slide 4 / A tweet by @NataliaSylv on top of my illustration that reads “It's how we internalize that we're a burden. It's how we learn that your comfort takes priority over our pain. Which is another way of saying non-disabled lives matter more.”⁣ ⁣ ID Slide 5 / A G F M request on top of my illustration that is titled “Sun’s accessible home fund” 615 USD raised of 10,000 goal. So I fully started #EMDR again the other day. It was a pretty intense session. Lots of memories and tears but by the end of the session I was grounded and relieved that I wasn’t in that place of trauma anymore. ⁣ ⁣ In the few days following my session I knew I would be more sensitive as I continued to process more emotions and more memories from the past would come up. ⁣ ⁣ I ordered a package of some things we needed for our home last week. On Monday I had a note that my package was going to be delivered that day and I was thrilled it came so quickly. ⁣ ⁣ That didn’t happen. I was disappointed but I kept reminding myself I would likely only have to wait one more day. ⁣ ⁣ On Tuesday it said my package was out for delivery so I was excited again, but the package was delayed and I told myself again “it’s okay, just one more day.” ⁣ ⁣ The package was literally down the street and I found myself getting increasingly more frustrated because I didn’t know why my package was so close but I was unable to have any control when it was delivered to me. ⁣ ⁣ It’s Friday. I went to the post office and was told the driver had been absent from work for 3 days and so they had a backlog of items. I asked if they could grab my package and they said they were unable to. ⁣ ⁣ I left discouraged but it was good to know I had an answer for why this was constantly happening. ⁣ ⁣ When I got home I sat down and started to dissociate. Michael saw me and asked what was wrong. He reminded me it was Friday and that my birthday was tomorrow. ⁣ ⁣ But all I could think of was not having access to my package. I kept wondering why I was so stuck on it. It was just stuff, why couldn’t I get over it?⁣ ⁣ Then my brain brought up a memory of how I was constantly disappointed as a child. I would tell someone that they needed to get/do something for me, and because of their addiction, they would frequently forget. ⁣ ⁣ I was a kid. I couldn’t do the things I was asking an adult to do for me. I had to just sit with it and internalize my anger and disappointment because I couldn’t act out these emotions or I would get punished. ⁣ ⁣ In the present, I realized this… ⁣ Cont in comments ⁣ ⁣ (at Everywhere) https://www.instagram.com/p/CofVL0_r9JC/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Online advocacy is real advocacy.⁣ ⁣ In an inaccessible world it is easier for some Disabled people to contribute to advocacy online.⁣ ⁣ We all have a necessary role to play. ⁣ ⁣ The other week - a Chronic Illness page announced they were having an in person conference. When asked if masks were going to be required, they deferred to the CDC guidelines. Which meant, as most of us knew - masks would not be required. ⁣ ⁣ Many Disabled and Chronically Ill people spoke up about this and notified their communities. ⁣ ⁣ Later on in the day - that page announced that they were going to officially ask for masking to be required at their event. ⁣ ⁣ If online advocacy didn’t exist - maybe that event would have taken place with the laid back CDC guidelines instead of protecting the most vulnerable with masks. ⁣ ⁣ A lot of people talk about the negatives of social media - but positives exist as well. ⁣ ⁣ With social media we can create m*tual aid campaigns to save the most vulnerable members of our communities. ⁣ ⁣ We can problem solve with like-minded friends. ⁣ ⁣ We can be present when our bodies are unable to cooperate physically. ⁣ ⁣ We can make change in the physical world through our advocacy online. ⁣ ⁣ Social media and online activism is a tool. Some people are able to access the physical world with ease - and others are not. ⁣ ⁣ We all have a different role to play in society.⁣ ⁣ Of course I would love for the physical world to be more accessible to Disabled people - but until then - the internet is a tool for change - and one that is much easier for Disabled people to access. ⁣ ⁣ @tovahsfine #DisabilityJustice #DisabilityRights #CommunityCare #CommunitySafety #DisabilityAdvocate #HumanRights #SocialJustice #OnlineAdvocacy #SocialMediaTools #DisabilityInclusion #AbleismIsTrash #AbleismKills #Accessibility #AccessibilityForAll ⁣ (at Worldwide) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoXmfJRLx29/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Some important tweets - CW / m*rder by police, fatphobia, mention of killing and r*pe⁣ ⁣ Regarding slide 6 - this was a tweet in response to someone talking about how killing people can sometimes be justified but r*pe can never be justified. The wording of the original tweet wasn’t the best - and I preferred this response to the tweet instead. ⁣ ⁣ ID Slide 1 / Brutally killing people and then telling the public to only respond peacefully is one of the most wildly absurd things that's normalized as police kill more and more yearly. When they say "peace" they mean respect and accept the state's monopoly on violence. @WilliamCSon ⁣ ⁣ ID Slide 2 / being a trauma survivor often means fleeing at the first sign of tension before imminent danger. the body is always in a state of planning an escape route, never getting too comfortable. my wish for so many is to feel safe in their bodies, to feel safe with people who value you. @OMFGWavy⁣ ⁣ ID Slide 3 / Wild how a nation can't afford eggs⁣ are drooling over celebs plastered in diamonds that literally cost more than the house they're living in. Celebrity idolization is wild. Call me a hater but thinking about this from a bigger perspective is wild. Celebs are a joke. @/ADoseOfMars on Twitter⁣ ⁣ AID Slide 4 / Free yourself from the idea that you can behave in a way that will "make" people who already don't respect, value or see the humanity in you feel that way. It's beautiful over here. @NinaMonei⁣ ⁣ ID Slide 5 / Someone cast Brendan Fraser in something else pronto so people stop pretending like The Whale is anything but super offensive. We all love Brendan and want him to make a comeback but not at the expense of fat people. Can we just like... get him in a romcom or something? Anything? @RosieeThor⁣ ⁣ ID Slide 6 / Yeah you can kill people in self defense, to save people, or to stop them from doing bad things. It's bad in general but there are acceptable cases. But raping someone is never going to help anyone, it's unequivocally evil @/JoeyFazzole on Twitter⁣ ⁣ Alt text available, more captions in the comments. ⁣ #DefundThePolice #AbolishThePolice #TraumaSurvivor #CelebrityCulture #DisabilityJustice #CatsAndPlants (at Everywhere) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn92iOfLJQ_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

<CW mention of r*pe on slide 3> Trauma victims and survivors are frequently told we are strong because of what we went through, that our trauma MADE us stronger. ⁣ ⁣ Like going through trauma is a badge of honour and increases our strength meter. Like going through trauma is character development. ⁣ ⁣ That’s not how it works.⁣ ⁣ I didn’t need to go through trauma to become strong. ⁣ ⁣ The strength was always there - and I would rather not have had to use it. ⁣ ⁣ Trauma didn’t make me stronger, I had to be in order to survive. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #TraumaRecovery #TraumaHealing #TraumaRecovery #PTSDSurvivor #PTSDRecovery #YouDidntDeserveIt #PTSD #cPTSD #TraumaDidntMakeMeStronger #MentalHealthSupport ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ID Slide 1 / An illustration drawn by me @tovahsfine of a yt femme with long blue hair giving the middle finger. She is wearing a pink tshirt and blue jeans. There is a rhaphidaphora Tetrasperma growing behind her. The words “Trauma didn’t make me stronger, I had to be in order to survive.”, are written next to her in white on top of a pink bubble. ⁣ ⁣ ID Slide 2 / Same illustration with a tweet on top that reads “here's to you, trauma survivor.⁣ you're fucking here despite everything working against you - people, society, yourself. You're fucking here.” @/McKennaSpeaksUp on Twitter⁣ ⁣ ID Slide 3 / Same illustration with a tweet on top that reads “I feel like the first trauma is being assaulted, but the secondary traumas are all the ppl ignoring u and telling u that ur lying, u deserve it, or that their friendship w the rapist is more important than the assault” @/WhoraXXX on Twitter @PlantainChipss⁣ ⁣ ID Slide 4 / Do I want to live authentically as my true self & reduce my dependence on what other people think about me? Absolutely <100 emoji>⁣ But is this safe for me as a marginalized person? Is this feasible for me as a trauma survivor? Probably not <sad face emoji> @/Hi_Its_AnnaLeah on Twitter (at Worldwide) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn7mVeavP7j/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
