DOCTOR CLIMAX Season 1 (2024): Colorful, poppy Thai comedy-drama, created by Ekachai Uekrongtham and set in the late '70s, about "Doctor Nat" (Chantavit Dhanasevi), a dorky dermatologist who parlays his experience treating STIs into a second career as a pseudonymous sex advice columnist for the Bangkok Express, scandalizing half the country and drawing the ire of an outspoken conservative MP (Bobby Nimit Lugsamepong). Ironically, Nat himself has a terrible sex life, and pursues an awkward flirtation with the newspaper's foxy graphic designer Linda (Arachaporn Pokinpakorn) rather than fixing things with his timid wife Tukta (Chermawee Suwanpanuchoke), who eventually has a sexual awakening of her own. For the most part, DOCTOR CLIMAX endears with its goofy sense of humor, surreal touches, and good-natured sex positivity, although it doesn't do a great job of conveying the passage of time and it stumbles when the story turns more serious — particularly in a later sequence in which Nat's well-meaning advice to a young gay man has unintended consequences, and in the season finale, which is marred by frustrating ambivalence about abortion. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Strangely not. VERDICT: Doesn't really stick the landing, and the dorkiness can be a bit too much, but charming overall. Photosensitive viewers should note that the final episode has some flashing/strobing effects.

WU-TANG: AN AMERICAN SAGA (2019–2023): Passable but overlong and overly sanitized fictionalization of the formation and early years of the hip-hop supergroup the Wu-Tang Clan. Created by Wu-Tang co-founder the RZA (Bobby Diggs, played by Ashton Sanders) and Alex Tse, the show is neither fish nor fowl: It's much too drawn out for casual viewers, who may get restless with the pacing (the group isn't even formed until the middle of the second season, while the third season's depiction of the members' many ego clashes starts to strain patience), but dedicated fans may object to the various dramatic liberties it takes with the story. My knowledge of Wu-Tang lore is not deep, so I can't tell you exactly what's been changed or nerfed, but the tang of artificial flavoring is hard to miss, and it's telling that several of the other members say they never even watched the show, feeling that it doesn't represent their story. WU-TANG actually works best when it steps further away from its mundane network TV dramatics for the occasional surreal fantasy sequence; there are several episode-length examples in Season 3, including a Blaxploitation spoof/pastiche directed by Mario Van Peebles. Ironically, while the show presumably represents how the RZA wanted his own story told, Sanders is by far the weakest of the ongoing cast, and the show's young RZA often comes across as deeply corny even when he's right. Nonetheless, the show's most interesting episode (S02E06, "Protect Ya Neck") makes an earnest effort to visualize his creative process, and makes a strong case for the artistic legitimacy of hip-hop sampling. CONTAINS LESBIANS: Ol' Dirty Bastard's alter ego in the Blaxploitation episode has a mff threesome, but that's it. VERDICT: Most viewers would probably do just as well sticking with Season 2, which covers the more expected biopic territory of the group's formation and debut.

Hello! I have plenty of rec lists of yours saved and plenty of stuff that I still need to watch, so I really really should not ask this question. But I am curious, so ...

I recently watched Spare Me Your Mercy and Cheery Lee, Village Headman and Paradise of Thorns and now I want to ask if you know more Thai series/movies that play in rural areas as opposed to the cities we more frequently see?

I am aware of Doiboy and A Tale of A Thousand Stars as well... Anything you know of that I am missing? As you can see I am genre hopping anyway, so anything might be interesting if it tickles my fancy ...

I'm sooooo very glad you enjoyed Cheery Lee, Village Headman.

While I'm not the most avid lakorn watcher (like nowhere near as good as @nonkul in watching long lakorns), these are some countryside/rural life/period setting Thai series I've quite enjoyed.

1. Nha Harn (2022)

This series is probably the closest to what you might be looking for in terms of depiction of countryside life of Isan teens with a dash of BL.

2. My Love in the Countryside (2024)

No QL in this one but it's one of my favorite rural setting romcom. Great pacing, sizzling chemistry between ML and FL, and a very likable FL.

3. Doctor Climax (2024)

While technically not a rural setting piece, this raunchy sex dramedy, set in 70s Bangkok, is THE most gorgeous cinematography I've witnessed in a Thai series last year. The main protagonist is a total cheater bastard so I could have loathed him but I'm glad he was played by one of my favorite Thai actors, Ter Chantavit so the hate was mildly lessened. There's an episode focusing on a gay character played by Ud Awat (who's in Doi Boy).

4. Once Upon A Star

The film is about a traveling pharma-cinema troupe as they go on the road to spread the joy of live-dubbed movies. It's like a beautiful and poignant love letter to Thai 60s cinema.

5. The Teacher's Diary

I actually got around to properly watching this film just the other day. It's a classic GTH/GDH film that was very popular when it was released about a former wrestler who got sent off into to teach kids at a rural house boat school.

6. You & Me & Me

A beautiful coming of age film about twin sisters You and Me who moved to the countryside for the first time and experienced their first love with a countryside boy named Mark.

There's in fact a lot more lakorns with rural setting due to the popularity of hi-so girl/farmer boy trope in thailand but I just wanted to give spotlight to some of the more underrated/heart-tugging works that really stuck with me (which tends to be works that lean more into the bonds between characters rather than leaning into the romance although romance is there).

hi! nadao bangkok was the company sky was in prior to gmmtv ! however they shut down in 2022, so i think sky was freelance for a bit before joining gmmtv

you'll hear lots of hype around being an ex-nadao actor because nadao was known for their excellent quality shows and acting. they weren't as big in size like gmmtv is, but they focused more on quality over quantity, which made them quite well-known in thailand and intl, + lots of their artists are very successful since (billkin, pp, tor, jj, ice paris and many more were all in nadao).

Just to give a little bit of context for anyone who isn't familiar...

Mine Media is the production company under Davika 'Mai' Hoorne (she's my tumblr icon at the moment hehe) and Chantavit 'Ter' Dhanasevi. Davika is a well-known triple threat in Thailand...actress/model/singer. P'Ter is an actor and screenwriter.

Davika's been on record stating that she intends to produce sapphic media. Whether these sets of photos have anything to do with a planned GL...I really don't know (no official news has been released).
