New York City Day Four: Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Wall Street
On our fourth day, we went to the place that you absolutely can’t miss on your visit to New York, The Statue of Liberty. I had already been there the first time I went to New York City when I was little, but I barely remember that. This time, I payed close attention to what I was seeing, payed attention to everything I learned in the museum about the history of when and how the statue was made.…

9/11 Memorial - New York
The 9/11 Memorial was the main ticket on the cards for the day. On a walking route, I would pass the Flatiron Building, Madison Square Park, Washington Square Park, Soho and more. Along the way taking a detour from Washington Square Park to visit the outdoor store REI (303 Lafayette). From REI, I cheated taking the Metro to 9/11 Memorial.  Still, it was a long day, I must have done close to 20km.…

Perhaps because of AI art, I am reminded of the 2017 Fearless Girl and Charging Bull incident.
It goes something like this, paraphrased from the Pedia of Wikis.
In the late 80s Arturo Di Modica, sicilian artist, dropped this thing in front of Wall Street:
Tumblr media
This is Charging Bull, aka 360 000 $'s worth of perfectly good bronze spent by the artist to send a message of hope and prosperity to the good people of america after the 87 crash. On the subject of the piece's meaning, the artist said: "My point was to show people that if you want to do something in a moment things are very bad, you can do it. You can do it by yourself. My point was that you must be strong" during an interview with critic Anthony Haden-Guest for Phillips.
The statue was later move to Bowling Green and has become quite a tourist attraction, as well as an object of hatred from anti-capitalist movements such as Occupy Wall-Street. It has been vandalized and decried, but the defacement I'm really interested in today is the Fearless Girl statue.
Tumblr media
Fearless Girl now faces the New York Stock Exchange that the bull once faced, but when it was first created, the girl was placed in front of the bull, which radically altered the meaning of the piece. It was comissioned by a bunch of suits in an asset management corpo as a PR stunt to promote gender diverse companies in their portfolio or something to that effect. Girlboss stuff, you understand. But as a result, the bull now symbolised patriarchy, an antagonist to our lil Girlboss.
This pissed off the artist, who complained until the statue was moved where it now resides, although its footprints are still there in front of the bull, as a commemoration, much to Arturo's chagrin, we can assume.
Am I going anywhere with this?
Not really. I don't have much of a horse in this race. I do think it is interesting though, in a moment in history where we discuss the ways MLAs can be used to create art. We talk about "theft" a lot, and if I'm honest, I'm still not sure where I stand on that issue as an artist myself. It's very complicated and I'm very tired.
It is however my impression that to Arturo, Fearless Girl was, in some way, an act of theft. Artistic theft. My understanding of this situation, if I were to agree with him, would be that meaning was taken away from his art piece and injected into another art piece. Stolen.
And I don't know if that's the correct way to look at it, but I do think it's an interesting point of view to consider. Do with that what you will.

Immersive New York
Looking for the Insta Moment in NYC. Excuse the rant, this attraction pushed my button.
Travel There – Looking for the Insta Moment On a random Wednesday afternoon in Lower Manhattan, when we’d had Fraunces Tavern Museum and Trinity Church virtually to ourselves, people were lined up to have their picture taken with the Bull. Both of the empty attractions were ever so much more interesting and meaningful than the Bull, but the Bull was getting all the attention. What you can’t see…
