Kai (Kim Jongin) - 120315 High Cut April, 2012 Interview
                                     “EXO-K, The First History”
Their team name is EXO and the total amount of members is 12. EXO-K is comprised of 6 members and will promote in Korea while the other 6 will promote in China as EXO-M (Madarin). Although it’s prior to their debut, they’ve reached over a million views on their teasers which were released on Youtube at the end of last year. EXO gained the inspiration to their name from exoplanet which stands for the sun and a superior planet, doubling onto that is the meaning of having new stars coming from an unknown planet. We decided to meet the 6 members of EXO-K: Leader Suho (22), Baekhyun (21), Chanyeol (21), D.O. (20), Kai (19), and Sehun (19). This is their first interview and you can sense their awkwardness and nervousness, but in another aspect you can sense their innocence of having a lot of dreams as this marks our first meeting with EXO.
Tumblr media
After having f(x) make their debut in 2009, it’s been 2 years since SM has put out a new group. As high as expectations are in your surroundings, the pressure must be just as high. What are your plans for your upcoming debut?
Suho: Right now, we’re planning on working hard with the music and performance we’ve prepared in Korea, Asia, and worldwide for ourselves to be known.
In preparing your debut in SM, there must have been rewarding and joyful memories as well.
Kai: There was a motto in that instead of receiving, the training we received was giving in that although normally artists do receive a lot from fans, we felt that we should instead return the favor to our surroundings so all of us took up on doing charity work .I think one of the joyful memories we have is working in RCY (Youth Red Cross) or places like that where we either clean or play with kids who have disabilities. Even after making our debut, we plan on continuously doing charity work when we have time.
Tumblr media
We heard you all live in one dorm. How many rooms are there and how is it divided up?
Chanyeol: Two members share one room each and I share mine with Baekhyun, the others being that Sehun and Suho share a room while Kai and D.O. are roommates.
You must know each other’s sleeping habits, whether it being someone making noise from their noses. Baekhyun: Chanyeol’s breathing is really loud. Before he goes to bed, he always sniffles and it’s so loud that I can’t sleep. Chanyeol: (Countering that) Baekhyun always whimpers about 40 times during his sleep like a puppy.
Are the other rooms as problematic? (The rest of the members shake their hands in the air) No, we all sleep happily. Baekhyun: (Looking at Chanyeol) Maybe we shouldn’t have said it. Chanyeol: But we love each other (laughs).
How about food or laundry? Sehun: We tend to take care of ourselves and we choose a monitor to do dish washing every week. The plates you eat from, you wash and even things like socks, you wash your own. But often times, we do games like Bok Bul Bok, Rock, Paper, Scissors, or games from 1N2D like who can flick the bottle cap closest to the line.
Tumblr media
Who’s the best at games? (Altogether) Kai is the best. He’s like the status of a sniper as he can to alkkagi (T/N: where you try to knock an opponent’s piece in flicking your own piece), as he’s considered the masterof games.
Who’s the tidiest member? (Without hesitation, altogether) D.O. Sehun: If you look at D.O.’s dresser, all of his t-shirts are folded neatly in his draws and organized according to white t-shirts, v-necks, etc. as he’s the type to organize. But it’s not that I’m saying the other members are messy, it’s just that D.O. is the neatest out of all.
When you entered SM, you must have had the thought, “I want to be close to this senior.” Chanyeol: When I was younger, I didn’t really know about artists or idols and the first boy group I happened to come across was TVXQ, especially senior U-Know Yunho from TVXQ as he’s not only the leader, but seeing his charistmatic side was nice. Suho: Senior Yunho gave me a lot of advice in that as a leader, whether talking about image or in the musical aspect, and even choreography-wise, he gave me a lot of warnings as senior Leeteuk of Super Junior also gave me a lot of advice in regards to the position and responsibilities of a leader alongside teamwork.
Tumblr media
When did you first want to become artists? It must have not been easy in qualifying in SM auditions. D.O.: I liked singing since I was younger and before I got into SM, I did attend a music academy. I took the SM audition back in 2010 and at the time, I was a 2nd year in high school and my parents didn’t oppose my dreams as they encouraged me in that if I work efficiently, then I should hear the compliments of doing well from others for the fruit of my labor. I want to become a singer that is acknowledged for my vocals. Chanyeol: I liked using instruments since elementary school and during middle school, I was in band and I would feel overwhelmed in receiving claps from the audience when finishing a performance and since then, I took steps into becoming a singer as my dream. At the time, I was a first year in high school and qualified the SM auditions in 2008. Sehun: I was casted in a lucky opportunity I had received as I was passing by my school and someone from the SM casting team asked me if I was interested in doing an audition. At the time, I was young so I told my mother and she had spoke with one of the SM staff members herself. Back then, I was in 6th grade. I took auditions for 2 years and I was qualified in my 2nd year of middle school. Honestly, at the time, I didn’t know anything about celebrities but being in SM where I learned how to sing and dance, my greed for becoming a singer grew. Baekhyun: I wanted to become a singer since 4th grade and I would even tell my friends that I was going to become a celebrity. And when I started taking auditions, I failed for other companies and after getting into high school, I was preparing to advance into a university with a music impact but oddly enough, the opportunity came to me. The day I went to take my exams, I was pretending to be a musician in that I was holding the music notes in front of the school and relaxing my vocals when someone suddenly tapped my back. I’m not sure if I can call this a luck of thousand years, but that’s how I was fatefully casted into SM. Kai: Since 3rd grade, I learned jazz dance and ballet. I just liked dancing so I would learn this dance and that dance. One day, I saw Shinhwa seniors dancing on TV and I asked my dad when seeing that, “What kind of dance is that?” He replied to me in saying, “That’s a dance that singers dance.” I told him, “I want to learn that dance.” My dad encouraged me to do so if it was something I wanted to do and since then, I prepared for 2 years for auditions and I passed. That was when I was in 6th grade and the company thought I was too young so they told me, “Come back in 2 years if you still want to be a singer.” So I entered SM in my 2nd year of middle school. Suho: I had dreams of becoming a singer since elementary and although it felt so far, I was coincidentally casted in middle school when I was going through my growth spurt as I was pretty tall and was casted by various places. I heard that the people from Seoul Samsungdong’s Trade Center would come by often since our house was nearby. Then I received an offer from SM’s end and I told my parents, as they said that if it’s a company like SM, it’s worth giving a shot and if I failed here, then I should draw the line of quitting. I’m not sure if I should be fortunate that it was luck, but I was given the chance to make a debut.
Tumblr media
What’s your relation to EXO-M and do you feel like one team or feel a sense of rivalry with one another? Sehun: Although we’re doing separate promotions, we’re overall one planet, one group. We practice and eat together, so if you’re talking about rivalry, you can say it’s just rivalry out of good intentions. When we work on the same choreography, we look over and monitor each others’ videos and critique on what we lack in each other’s and there’s a little rivalry hinted, but wait, it’s not rivalry, just good intentions, good intentions is all.
How would you like to classify EXO’s music genre? Suho: We want to make our own genre for EXO. When people hear this song, they’ll think, “This is an EXO-like genre” and “This song has a feeling that’s extra-terrestrial.”
Do you have any family members working in this field? (Everyone looks around at each other while Chanyeol says) To be honest, my sister is a news anchor… (Everyone looks in shock and he interrupts) She’s preparing to become a news anchor!
Chanyeol is rumored as the “ulzzang of Hyundae High School.” Chanyeol: I’m not an ulzzang, but I heard a lot of things like that because I was known as a trainee while I was in high school. That stuff doesn’t really happen at school as I’ve never been asked out by a girl and I just wanted to be a quiet and calm student in school.
Tumblr media
What are your images of yourselves for your futures that you dream of, as well as the image of EXO-K? Baekhyun: I wish for us to be a group that marks history. 100 years from now, a group that can come up in history books like Beatles or Michael Jackson. Personally for me, whether it be varieties or acting, I want to do various types of promotions. Chanyeol: I wish for all 12 members of both K & M to be able to promote together forever. Personally for me, I’d like to be better in factors like composing or acting, even playing instruments like the guitar or drums. I want a lot of people to listen and like the music I make. Suho: As an artist, I want EXO to be recognized and be overall entertainers. Kai: I’ll do my best in my role for EXO. I really want to be acknowledged by all for dance and I want the world to know of our music. D.O.: I want to become a team that is loved by everyone across the world. I had other things I wanted to challenge since I was younger aside from being a singer and if the opportunity comes, I want to try becoming a chef too. Kai: D.O. is honestly the cooking monitor of the dorm. D.O.: I want to try being a hair designer or a fashion designer.
If you have the opportunity, you can have D.O. style your hair. (All the members) We don’t really want to trust him with our hair

Popularity of K-pop fan culture activities
By Lau Zhi Xin
U1630093E
Introduction
In May 2018, hit K-pop boy group BTS took their first top spot on the Billboard 200 chart with their Love Yourself: Tear album. This is also the first time any K-pop album has clinched the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart. BTS albums have also continuously topped iTunes Top Album charts across different regions, with their latest album Map of Soul: Persona dominating the charts of at least 86 regions.
The success of BTS in international markets outside of South Korea has been described as “breaking through the glass ceiling of Asian pop in the United States”, and has earned BTS the title of “the biggest boy band in the world.” While BTS’ music and performances are key reasons to their popularity, it is undeniable that their fans and the Internet have a hand in propelling them to these successes.
K-pop fandoms have become such key contributors behind the success of K-pop idol groups that they can potentially determine whether K-pop groups or idols survive in the industry. Along with their K-pop idol groups, K-pop participatory fan culture is also gaining prominence worldwide, and it is thus crucial to examine the extent of their popularity.
Background
The idea of fandom was defined by Jenkins (2010) as a social structure and cultural practice conceived by engaged consumers of mass media properties, and “participatory culture” is explained as a method used by fans to claim their rights to participate in media culture by creating new works out of materials originally produced by the culture industry (Jenkins, 1992).
In the case of K-pop, Jung (2012) described participatory fan culture as an example that distinctively brings emphasis to the fan groups’ initiatives, as well as their active and collective involvement in online activities. Devoted fans often participate in various fan support activities to show their affection and support for their idols, as well as help to keep them in the news.
Participatory fan culture in South Korea is not something recent, but it rose to prominence only in the 1990s with the fans of popular K-pop groups such as Seo Taiji and the Boys, H.O.T and Sechkies, also known among K-pop fandoms as the first generation K-pop idols. Participatory fan culture has also evolved with each generation of K-pop idols and has taken many forms across the years – coloured raincoats, balloons and fan chants in the 1990s, lightsticks, fan banners and mass dances in 2000s, fan support events and projects of the 2010s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Popularity spanning across different types of activities
While traditional participatory fan culture remains relevant in K-pop today, it has gained such immense popularity that products of today’s participatory fan culture have taken on many new forms including fan slogans, cup sleeve events, subway station advertisements and involvement in good causes in the name of their K-pop idols. These fan support activities vary in terms of number of fans involved and engaged, as well as the amount of money spent.
Fan slogans
Fans slogans can be viewed as an evolution of fan banners used to cheer for K-pop idols at concerts and weekly recordings. Fans are involved in the entire creative and sale process, from taking photos of their K-pop idols, to designing fan slogans and selling them to other fans. Fan slogans are sold to fans in South Korea as well as across the globe with the help of other fans acting as group order managers (GOM) who will coordinate the sale and order in their respective countries. Fan slogans offer a more individualised option than traditional fan banners to a small extent, as there are many varied designs of slogans that fans can purchase, depending on what they like.
Tumblr media
Cup sleeve events
Fan support in the form of cup sleeves is a relatively new addition to this participatory fan culture as it only started to grow alongside the strong and still expanding café culture in South Korea. As with most products of participatory fan culture, cup sleeves and cup sleeve events are designed and organised entirely by K-pop fans themselves. Cup sleeve events are typically held at cafes to celebrate an idol’s birthday, anniversary or achievements. With the café decked in merchandises and posters of a K-pop group, fans can collect specially designed cup sleeves with a purchase made from the café. Such events often see a high turnup as they also act as a venue for fans to gather and get to know the community, as well as sell or trade their own merchandise
Tumblr media
Subway station advertisements
Besides the typical advertisments for brands and organisations, subway stations in South Korea also frequently feature fan support advertisements for K-pop idols. These are typically put up to celebrate an idol’s birthday, anniversary or achievements as well. Collectively, fans will raise funds to buy advertisement spots at different subway stations. Such subway advertisements contributes to K-pop idol’s popularity and are effective methods to show fans’ support. In 2018, NU’EST’s JR showed his appreciation to L.O.Λ.Es for the love that he has received by going around subway stations in Seoul displaying his birthday advertisements to greet fans, and repeated this once again in 2019. Trainees who appeared on the recent Produce X 101 were also gifted with their own subway advertisements by their fans even though they have yet to officially make their debut.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Involvement in philanthropy work in the name of their idols
Perhaps the best outcome of participatory fan culture is fans’ involvement in good social causes in the name of their idols. Ever since 2007 when fans of Shinhwa’s Shin Hye-sung donated “fan rice” to celebrate his first solo concert, this charity trend has now become widely popular and common. These are carried out to celebrate idols’ birthdays, anniversaries and achievements, but they also serve to make K-pop idols look better to the public and create a better reputation of the fandom itself.
Popularity in terms of scale of projects
Fandoms and individual fans have to pay for such fan projects, usually through donation drives carried out among the fandom or from their own pockets. A whole-page coloured advertisement in a daily newspaper in 2014 cost about ₩10 million and a subway advertisement can cost between  ₩1.5 million and  ₩4.5 million, depending on its location. According to Seoul Metro, there were 1,576 subway advertisements dedicated to K-pop idols, a sharp increase from the 76 in 2014.
K-pop fandoms, similar to K-pop itself, thrives on competition. Such activities of participatory fan culture only continue to expand in scale and popularity, as it is often seen as a competition between and even within fandoms. Subway station advertisements dedicated to K-pop idols have already taken step further to include an entire cabin in subway trains itself. In August 2019, fans of BTS, also known as ARMY, decked out subway trains in Seoul to celebrate Jungkook’s 23rd birthday. In honor of RM’s birthday, ARMYs also donated a total of ₩1.994 million to build a forest of 1,250 spirea prunifolia in the Jamsil Hangang Park.
Tumblr media
Popularity on an international scale
K-pop participatory fan culture is not limited to South Korea alone and has spread across the globe. International K-pop fandoms often replicate these activities of participatory fan culture in their home country, or they may change it to be relevant to their location. In order to match the donation made by Korean ARMYs to build a forest in honor of RM’s birthday, international ARMYs also made a donation of ₩9.12 million to build a second forest. In Singapore, subway advertisement for BTS was put up by local ARMYs in June 2019 at Dhoby Ghaut MRT station to celebrate BTS’ 6th anniversary. This was the first of its kind in Singapore, but is unlikely to be the last.
K-pop fans have also managed to put up advertisements on Times Square ads promoting their K-pop idols, and according to Branded Cities Network who have worked on multiple K-pop advertisement campaigns in Times Square, these are usually sponsored by fans in China, which further highlights the international popularity of such activities. K-pop idols who have been featured on Times Square advertisement spaces include EXO, BTS, Wanna One’s Kang Daniel and NCT’s Taeyong.
Tumblr media
Instead of donating rice or planting forests that are now common charity trends by fandoms in South Korea, French ARMYs have recently organised a litter picking activity. This was in part an effort to counter the bad press that Korean ARMYs received for littering outside cafes after celebrating Jungkook’s birthday. French ARMYs picked up cigarette butts littered on the streets in France and stored them in plastic bottles.
Tumblr media
Conclusion
As the popularity of K-pop continues to grow across the globe, we cannot say for sure when the craze will burn out. However, it is clear that the popularity of K-pop fan culture has also grown tremendously with the idols. In terms of variety and number of activities, financial scale and manpower involved, as well as countries and regions which they take place in, activities of K-pop fan participatory culture are likely to continue to grow and fandoms compete to outshine one another.

I feel an amazing kinship with this man. Seriously. And not even in a fangirl way. It’s pretty easy for me to tell that Oppayam has depression. He tries to hide it, but not really. He sort of spelled it out in his photo essay, his FB posts, etc. He has even mentioned that he thinks he has depression. When he smiles his beautiful smile, sometimes it doesn’t quite reach his eyes. Behind his smile, there is pain.
In Shinhwa Broadcast episode 5 when the members gathered for drinks, Dongwan was the only one absent. And he was unreachable. When Eric was asked about this, he said that Dongwan frequently disappears, that he’ll even go abroad without telling anyone.
In Shinhwa’s 2013 episode of Radio Star, the members said they became emotional watching Dongwan’s drama because his character reminded them of how he was in his 20s. Innocent. Eric said that the world had changed him.
The Unchanging Part 2 V-Live where he sat in silence without any expression? People who have a cold may be silent to avoid damaging their voice, but they don’t usually have no reactions.
There are more moments, but I would rather not list them.
I’m sure people will say that I can’t possibly diagnose someone. That is true—I am not a psychologist. However I have had depression for more than 15 years and I’ve worked with others who also have it. The signs are there. I may be wrong, but I don’t think so. But I hope I am.
If I am right, even with the numbness, lack of motivation, and shame that are depression, he manages to function; he keeps himself busy. He travels and goes on adventures. He reads, writes, learns languages, and donates to charity. He tries hard at everything he does.
This is why he inspires me so much. I find it hard even to eke out enough motivation to get out of bed. But watching Oppayam doing his best to fight depression makes me realize that it is possible to survive with it. He gives me hope that I, too, will be able to cope, and perhaps even thrive despite it. I want to thank him.
I want to tell him that true Shinhwa Changjos will always be there for him, no matter the mistakes he makes and his momentary lapses in judgment—because we all have them. I want to tell him that I care more about his happiness, career satisfaction, and what he wants to do in his career than I care about the “accolades,” the trophies and recognition, that could come with it. And most important, I want to tell him that he should never feel unworthy of receiving love. No matter what.

What a better and more meaningful birthday gift and a gift of life?
As usual, long time fansite, UBEric (Ubiquitous Eric), is doing a fundraising to celebrate his birthday next month. Together with all supporters, we've been donating to KCLF (Korea Childhood Leukemia Foundation) to celebrate Eric’s birthday each year and 2020 is probably no exception.
There are some prizes for highest contributors so contribute as much as you can.  Any question, you can contact UBEric’s twitter or by emails (same as the PayPal email).

Andy will hold a fanmeeting event with Red Hearts:
After 20 years of success, the member Andy of South Korea's group Shinhwa known as « the long living idol » will come to Taiwan for the « Red Hearts Club » to raise funds for the disadvantaged children on May 27th   through the event called 「2018 Andy Come Home Love Taipei Fan Meeting」. Andy addressed to the fans and invited everyone to 「go home for dinner 」 (it's the theme of the fanmeeting), after the meeting, in order to thank the fans, Andy will also take a one-to-one picture with all the audience.
Andy said : This is the third time that I'm coming to Taiwan to participate in the Red Heart Association's charity activities. I am very happy and satisfied to participate in such a charity event. I also thank fans who have been with me to help the disadvantaged families in order to let these children read and study in a good environment. In order to take good care of them, I will do my best to help!
The organizer of the Red Heart Association said that this year's meeting will be based on the theme concept "Andy's home in Taiwan". In the event, Andy will present a unique charm. In addition to performing multiple songs, he will also perform a number of activities with fans, close interactions and interactive games. ANDY said: When I came to Taiwan last year, I said that I hope to have the opportunity to come to Taiwan to travel, camp. At this meeting, we will have an open-plan, family space, living room, sofa, kitchen, bedroom. With our stories we can work hard to build dreams, encourage each other. We can also build together for many disadvantaged children. A happy home. When filming a message to promote the meeting, Andy also said in Taiwanese:「go home for dinner 」.
Different from (sorry can't read the name)'s visit to Taiwan, this time 「2018Andy Come Home Love Taipei Fan Meeting」will be based on donations. The audience is not divided into sections, and there is a limited amount of 500 tickets, ticket that can be obtained with a donation of 4,500 yuan.
The「2018Andy Come Home Love Taipei Fan Meeting」 will be held at Taipei's Neo Studio (NEO19)  on May 27th, and will be open for donations from 12:00 (noon) on April 22nd. Please refer to "Red Hearts" Facebook for more informations.
