WHITTINGHAM INITIALS
The Whittinghams, Charles the Elder (1767-1840), who founded the Chiswick Press, and his nephew and successor Charles the Younger (1795–1876), were among the finest English printer/publishers of the 19th century, noted especially for the quality of typographic design and evenness of printing. Their firm was also the chief printer for bookseller/publisher William Pickering, whose own devotion to quality was exemplified in his use of Aldus Manutius's anchor & dolphin printer's mark, combined with the motto Aldi Discipulus Anglus (Aldus's English Disciple).
Many of the distinctive, wood-engraved initials the Whittinghams used were designed by Charles II himself along with his artist daughters Charlotte and Elizabeth, almost all of which were engraved by English book illustrator and wood engraver Mary Byfield (1795-1871). The Whittingham initials shown here are from the 1896 Grolier Club publication, The Charles Whittinghams Printers by Arthur Warren (1860-1924), which itself is printed by one of the finest 19th-century American printers, Theodore Low De Vinne (1828-1914), who printed the book on handmade paper in an edition of 185 copies. Our copy is another gift from our friend Jerry Buff, a Grolier Club member.

Celebrating Diverse Books!
Reviewed by Anna-Celestrya Carr with help from her twins.
I’m so happy to have the opportunity to review three picture books for the 5th Annual Multicultural Children’s Book Day. A day to learn, share, and talk about the fantastic diverse literature available for young readers. It was a joy to share these stories with my twin three-year-old boys.
Disclosure: I received the following three books from their authors to give an honest review for #MCBD2018.
As an Indigenous woman with two little boys, finding them diverse stories is very important to me.  As biracial children I want them to have books that reflect their Indigenous heritage as well as stories from as many cultural backgrounds as possible. I want my boys to have the opportunity to not only see a representation of themselves in stories but find a connection to diverse characters.
A Tall Tale About a Dachshund and a Pelican How a Friendship Came to Be, written by Kizzie Jones, illustrated by Scott Ward and published by Tall Tales. This is a simple story about making friends regardless of differences and celebrating diversity.
This delightful flip-over bilingual English-Spanish picture book is a sequel to Kizzie Jones award-winning book How Dachshunds Came to Be. The illustrations are beautiful. As someone who grew up with a dachshund, I thought the artist portrayed the exuberance of Goldie the dachshund perfectly. Dog lovers will adore this story.
This tale is about the excitement of a dog wanting to make a new friend. The lesson to take away is unmistakable: you can like and appreciate someone without being similar.
It held the attention of both twins on our first reading. I can see it becoming a recurring book for story time. It is a charming sequel to the Tall Tale Series.
The next two picture books I have the pleasure of reviewing are Sporty Lou Soccer King and Johnny Skip 2 The Amazing Adventures of Johnny Skip 2 in Australia written by Quentin Holmes and published by Holmes Investment & Holdings LLC.
The illustrations in both Sporty Lou and Johnny Skip 2 have a cheerfulness to them. The bright color palette works well for both stories. It’s impressive that both books are drawn using the same style and the two little boys are completely different. The characters and background in each book are diverse.
Sporty Lou Soccer King is a story about Lou a spirited little boy being taught soccer for the first time. In Lou’s fantastic imagination his self-confidence is shown as he pictures a stadium full of people cheering his name. Lou’s disappointment in not being a naturally gifted player shakes that confidence.  Lou’s dad wants to share this great game with him and doesn’t let Lou stay discouraged. He gently teaches and encourages Lou to persevere.
Lou is a little boy with dark brown hair, dark brown eyes, and cappuccino skin color. He is ethnically ambiguous and could be any nationality. It’s possible a child from any race could look at Lou and see themselves or someone familiar. He’s every child.
I like the two sides we see of Lou; he pictures himself as a sports star and he’s a small boy who as he struggles, and misses finds the determination to keep trying.
Many kids who love sports will enjoy this book. But, I think the lesson of perseverance in Sporty Lou is important for any child to hear. I appreciated the thoughtful way the dad taught and corrected Lou. Sporty Lou Soccer King is an enjoyable read out load book.
Johnny Skip 2 The Amazing Adventures of Johnny Skip 2 in Australia is a story about Johnny, a black little boy, and his dog Grounder who use a remarkable device to skip all over the world.  They go to Australia to explore the outback and help a kangaroo.
This story has a lot going on for a picture book and it didn’t hold my three-year-old boys’ attention. I think it would be better enjoyed by kids five to seven.
This interactive adventure is an ambitious series that combines science and magic. The book teaches about the culture, language, animals, and environment of a continent. The story presents a lot of information on Australia quickly, but this causes the rhyme structure and rhythm of the text to feel forced making it difficult to read out loud.
I’m interested to see what is next for both Sporty Lou and Johnny Skip 2 in their series.
Reading diversity in fiction creates empathy and understanding in real life. These three books reflect a piece of our diverse, beautiful and complicated world.  I’d like to thank Kizzie Jones and Quentin Holmes for contributing their stories to Multicultural Children’s Book Day.
Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2017 (1/27/18) is in its 5th year and was founded by Valarie Budayr from Jump Into A Book and Mia Wenjen from PragmaticMom. Our mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in home and school bookshelves while also working diligently to get more of these types of books into the hands of young readers, parents and educators.

Harry Potter 4 – Ohnivý pohár
V bradavické škole čar a kouzel počtvrté, a tentokrát velkolepě. Budeme svědky významné události, kdy Bradavice hostí turnaj tří kouzelnických škol a šampionem může být jen jeden. Rhode Island Social Science Teacher Arrested For Vandalizing Columbus Statue
For many of us, the spasm of vandalism of public art and history has been painful to watch as mobs destroy a vast array of statues around the world, including such bizarre anti-racism vandalism like defacing Abraham Lincoln’s statue in London.  The arrest of Derrick Garforth in Rhode Island is particularly disturbing after he allegedly vandalized a statue of Columbus. Garforth is a social science teacher in Middle School who teaches history but sought to destroy a historical monument. It is a powerful lesson for his students but not one that you would expect from a history or social science teacher.
I have long opposed the sweeping efforts to dismantle or destroy historical monuments and statues. (Here and here and here and here and here and here and here) While I recognize that there are some statues that should be removed, my primary objection is to the lack of a public debate over how we should address these calls. Instead, mobs have been destroying or defacing statues.
Arrested with Garforth, 34, were Charlotte Whittingham, 28, and Mackenzie Innis, 26.
What has been chilling is the role of teachers like Erin Thompson, a professor of “art crime” at the City University of New York’s John Jay College.  Thompson actively  advised how to best destroy art in a tweet thread.
According to news reports, Garforth was charged with felony desecration of a grave or monument over the vandalizing of a statue of Christopher Columbus in Providence, Rhode Island.  Police say that Garforth and two others ran after police spotted them splattering the statue with paint.
The question is how the middle school will respond. We have often discussed how schools have react in vastly different ways if they agree with a teacher’s criminal actions.  For example, universities continue to honor Feminist Studies Associate Professor Mireille Miller-Young with pro-life advocates on campus. Miller-Young led her students in attacking the pro-life display, stealing their display, and then committing battery on one of the young women. Thrin Short, 16, and her sister Joan, 21, filed complaints and Miller-Young was charged with criminal conduct including Theft From Person; Battery; and Vandalism. Miller-Young was convicted and sentenced for assault.  She was not fired for her assault and instead she was supported by faculty and students including some who insisted that she was “triggered” by the pro-life activists. Some called pro-life activists as effectively terrorists.
Rhode Island General Law requires that anyone hired directly by the private school or public school department, contractual employees of the private school or public school department, and those individuals, who may have direct or unmonitored contact with children or students, must undergo a state criminal background check. Under the statute, the state criminal background check is valid for one year. However, state law confines “Disqualifying information” to those “offenses listed in §§ 23-17-37, 11-37-8.1, 11-37-8.3, 11-9-1(b), 11-9-1(c), 11-9-1.3.”
It is not clear that destruction of public property is a de facto disqualifying crime. The second provision, 11-37-8.1, involves sexual assault and the third provision, 11-37-8.3, is attempted sexual assault.   Section 11-9-1(b) and 11-9-1-13 concern child pornography.
The first provision, 23-17-37, actually deals with health care facilities but give a list of offense:
§ 23-17-37. Disqualifying information.
(a) Information produced by a national criminal records check pertaining to conviction for the following crimes will result in a letter to the employee and employer disqualifying the applicant from employment: murder, voluntary manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter, first-degree sexual assault, second-degree sexual assault, third-degree sexual assault, assault on persons sixty (60) years of age or older, assault with intent to commit specified felonies (murder, robbery, rape, burglary, or the abominable and detestable crime against nature) felony assault, patient abuse, neglect or mistreatment of patients, burglary, first-degree arson, robbery, felony drug offenses, felony larceny, or felony banking law violations, felony obtaining money under false pretenses, felony embezzlement, abuse, neglect and/or exploitation of adults with severe impairments, exploitation of elders, or a crime under section 1128(a) of the Social Security Act (42 U.S.C. § 1320a-7(a)). An employee against whom disqualifying information has been found may provide a copy of the national criminal records check to the employer who shall make a judgment regarding the continued employment of the employee. An employee against whom disqualifying information has been found may provide a copy of the national criminal records check to the employer who shall make a judgment regarding the continued employment of the employee.
So what does Jenks Middle School do now that Garforth has been placed on leave pending an investigation?  This is not just a criminal act but a lesson to children that they should destroy symbols and art that they oppose.  I expect many will come to support his case but it is the very definition of mob action.  It is the rejection of intellectual discourse and debate that defines education.  He is a social science teacher who wants to destroy monuments and art so that others cannot enjoy them, or reach their own conclusions on its merits of their worth. Unlike our prior discussion of social media and blog controversies, this is a case involving conduct not speech.

Shropshire’s female business leaders meet to celebrate achievements
Shrewsbury-based law firm Aaron & Partners holds special event for some of the most influential women in the region.
Female business leaders from across Shropshire came together at a special afternoon tea event hosted by law firm Aaron & Partners to celebrate the achievements of women in business.
On Friday 19th May more than 50 of the region’s most influential women met at the Mytton and Mermaid Hotel, in Shrewsbury, for an afternoon that began with a Prosecco reception in the courtyard.
Guests from businesses including Santander, Whittingham Riddell, Marches Growth Ltd and Savills then enjoyed a sumptuous afternoon tea in the hotel’s Mermaid Suite.
Marie Scott-Goldstone from Aaron & Partners organised the event, which was hosted by Trish Randles, a Real Estate Partner at the firm.
“It was fantastic to see so many influential women from right across Shropshire’s business community at one event,” said Trish.
“This region has a vast number of high achieving women who are working in or running some of the most successful and well known businesses.”
“This was our biggest ever gathering and that is a testament to the success that women are having across a wide range of business sectors in Shropshire.”

St. Distaff’s Day
Today, January 7, is St. Distaff’s day. It is also the first Monday after Epiphany which makes it Plough Monday. These days mark the time when men and women returned to work after the twelve days of Christmas. When they both fall on the same day there tends to be an additional day of merriment before really returning to work.
There is no actual St. Distaff. A Distaff is a tool used to spin flax into yarn or thread. The act of spinning was traditionally women’s work and distaff became a term used generally for all women’s work and eventually a term for women themselves or the female (distaff) side of the family.
The booklet shown above include an address by American librarian and museum administrator Henry W. Kent to a group of distaff members of the bookmaking profession in New York in 1937. The women present found the speech appealing, so printers Elizabeth Mann, Margaret Evans, and Janet Doe worked together to typeset, decorate, and print it. It was released as Keepsake No. 57 in 1938 by the American Institute of Graphic Arts in a limited edition of 750 copies.
Mr. Kent notes that American historian and librarian L.C. Wroth records Dinah Nuthead, as “the first of a long line of women distinguished in American typographical annals.” He then speaks of the long history of women who carried on their husband’s businesses, “they worked, they contrived, they managed (you may be sure), and they did it very well.”
He laments that there is little record of the artistic achievement of women in the book arts. He then mentions Charlotte and Elizabeth Whittingham who created “embellishments” for both Charles Whittinghams, and Mary Byfield who cut their designs in wood.
I welcome this opportunity to say, what all must feel, that I am glad the Distaff, emblem of women’s work these many centuries, should by them be kept as their sign now that the days of spinning are over, now that they, whether widow, wife, or maid, have turned their hands and their arts so effectively to the making of books.
