WHITTINGHAM INITIALS
The Whittinghams, Charles the Elder (1767-1840), who founded the Chiswick Press, and his nephew and successor Charles the Younger (1795–1876), were among the finest English printer/publishers of the 19th century, noted especially for the quality of typographic design and evenness of printing. Their firm was also the chief printer for bookseller/publisher William Pickering, whose own devotion to quality was exemplified in his use of Aldus Manutius's anchor & dolphin printer's mark, combined with the motto Aldi Discipulus Anglus (Aldus's English Disciple).
Many of the distinctive, wood-engraved initials the Whittinghams used were designed by Charles II himself along with his artist daughters Charlotte and Elizabeth, almost all of which were engraved by English book illustrator and wood engraver Mary Byfield (1795-1871). The Whittingham initials shown here are from the 1896 Grolier Club publication, The Charles Whittinghams Printers by Arthur Warren (1860-1924), which itself is printed by one of the finest 19th-century American printers, Theodore Low De Vinne (1828-1914), who printed the book on handmade paper in an edition of 185 copies. Our copy is another gift from our friend Jerry Buff, a Grolier Club member.

"And we’ll sweep out the ashes in the morning …”
Maverick Sunday is always a little bittersweet: still good music left to enjoy but only a few more hours in which to enjoy it, with a bit of a ‘morning-after-the-night-before clearing-up and putting-away’ feel to it.
Getting a lift in with one of the festival crew meant a nice early arrival, allowing us to hear the excellent Chris Murphy [below] sound-checking almost his entire set ahead of his 10.30 start, the expansive Halfway Around The World sounding highly atmospheric drifting out of the empty Barn in the unbroken sunshine. A later highlight of his set ‘proper’ was a full-crowd participation Tinder disaster ballad (who says country music isn’t bang up to date?) Done With Diane.
Tumblr media
Bau Cat (Abby Butler and Jim Davies of the late, lamented Goat Roper Rodeo Band) turned out a suitably chilled Sunday morning set with Carib and Latin flavours topped by a nice harmony combination of her silky tones and his gruffer vocal (not often heard in the GRRB!) And they didn’t seem at all phased at being introduced by an impromptu, but full-length, rendition of Mercedes Benz by the Moonshine’s on-duty soundman…
The only performance on The Green (as always) on a Sunday came from The Rabble Chorus, with a mix of mildly spiritual and secular choral music: no Bach or Haydn sadly, but they did ‘do’ the Hothouse Flowers! Normally unaccompanied they’d drafted in a couple of guitars on this occasion. The only quibble Plunger have is that the choir could benefit from a little amplification, to get the full experience without having to stand just a foot or two away!
Tumblr media
Standing outside The Peacock for Drew Young [above], his set was every bit as warm as the sun on our backs, especially the mellow morning lilt of Sideways and the honeyed harmonies of Wondering Where This Will End. A darker note was struck by the haunting minor key Georgia Line, Kelly Bayfield adding the eerie counter-vocals, before taking up a tambourine to help drive the bouncy stomp of It’ll Be Soon. An upbeat finish was provided by A Couple Of Rounds Before I Go, David Booth bringing some twang on electric guitar and topped with a brief crowd-singalong-chorus finale.
Up at The Barn, The Henry Brothers, dapper (and probably bloody hot in the circumstances) in their suits, cheered everyone up with a set of upbeat Old Timey 1920s-style ballads of death, disfigurement and disaster. They were a hoot, to be honest.
Tumblr media
LoneHollow [who we sneaked a cheeky portrait of behind the venue, above] returned to the barn for their third set of the weekend, kicking off (after Damon’s laconic “…and the crowd went wild!” observation on the slowly refilling Barn) with his excellent cover of Gregg Allman’s heartfelt Please Call Home, and there were Allmans-y touches too to I Wouldn’t Know How. Their flair for Southern Gothic drama was well represented not only in reprises of Mary Ann and Not Today but in the dark drop-D badlands sweep of Shoot To Kill, Rylie’s airy eerie vocal matched by Damon’s atmospheric slide accompaniment. The pair bade farewell to their debut Maverick with the storming upbeat southern rocker Whiskey Woman.
The closing Moonshine set from Evangeline Gentle [below] was probably as close to a spiritual Sunday experience as Plunger were going to get, her sublime voice bewitching her audience through the anthemic poppy soar of Drop My Name, and an impassioned, warm The Strongest People Have Tender Hearts. Ella Spencer joined her once again, bringing her harmonies to Evangeline’s new single Sarah, before Evangeline ended her set with a spellbinding solo a cappella rendition (in honour of her Scots forebears) of the traditional Black Is The Colour.
Tumblr media
Heading past the peacock stage we caught a little of the Hoth Brothers (who follow the Thomson Twins rule - two guys who aren’t brothers, neither of whom are named Hoth, plus Sarah Ferrell... go figure). Some lovely backwoods Appalachian sounds with cracking banjo and fiddle playing.
With the end of the festival rapidly approaching campers and acts who’d already finished were making their way home so there was a certain amount of leave taking that meant we didn’t catch as much of Suzie Ungerlieder’s barn closing set as we ought, but her sweet, cool vox and some melodic guitar work in an emotional Summerbaby and the atmospheric jangling reverie of Walked All The Way Home (from back when she went under the moniker Oh Susanna) were a fittingly mellow way to come down from our Maverick high.
Another cracking weekend of Americana, country and more in highly picturesque surroundings (even if the weather didn’t always play ball), well fed by the wide range of vendors, and watered (well, ‘beered’, if that’s a word) in company with a largely chilled set of like-minded individuals… hands-down the best festival Plunger know.
It’s no wonder it feels a bit like leaving home when it all comes to an end…

prologue : pages 1-10  |  posting schedule
[image description for vision-impaired readers below the cut]
PAGE ONE
A still lake, woods lining the distant shore. The day is bright, and the trees reflect on the water. The image is overlaid with the location: Bayfield, Wisconsin.
Elsewhere on the same lake, a boathouse and pier extend out onto the water, and a sailboat floats nearby, sails furled out of view. On a far-off shore is a lighthouse, partially obscured by the haze of distance.
Away from the water, situated on a busy street of the Bayfield town center, is a shop with a domed conservatory roof and more windows than walls. Music floats out onto the street, past the eclectic display of potted plants and flowers set up along the sidewalk.
Through the windows, past the painted sign that reads WINCHESTER FLOWERS & PLANTS, is the faint silhouette of a tree.
PAGE TWO
Inside the shop. Three planter trays sit on a countertop, each holding a collection of labeled seedlings. Among the lavender and marigolds, a few unusual flowers are sprouting. Their names, according to the labels, are just as unusual as their flowers: Mary, Tuesday Afternoon, Pie, and Sammy’s Attitude.
On the wall, a pinboard displays an assortment of newspaper clippings and pictures;
A business card for a coffee shop called Elevenses, printed with a picture of a steaming cup of coffee.
A polaroid photo of Dean grinning at the camera while hugging an equally cheerful Charlie, marked Dean & Charlie 2007.
An old newspaper headline that reads “APPLE TREE GROWING IN THE MIDDLE OF WINCHESTER’S SHOP IS NOW 200 YEARS OLD!”
A certificate of appreciation from the local preschool, thanking Winchester Flowers & Plants for their generous donation–carrots given to feed the preschool’s pet bunnies.
A pizza menu with the vegetarian option crossed out. A frowny face has been drawn beside it for good measure.
A child’s simple drawing of a man holding a bunch of flowers beside a tree, labeled Mr Winche Dean.
Another polaroid photo of Dean giving Sam a noogie while Sam grimaces, marked 1999.
A series of instructional images for the care of flowers.
A business card for Benjamin Lafitte, local handyman.
And finally, another, more recent newspaper clipping that reads:
For the tenth consecutive year, Winchester Flowers and Plants has taken the top prize in the statewide Blossom Awards. Consumers and horticultural experts from all over Wisconsin placed their votes at the Garden Expo held in Madison this February, with the award presented in-store over the weekend.
The family-owned shop has been a much-loved part of the Bayside community since the village was first established in 1911, and has been handed down through generations of the Winchester family. Currently run by 37 year old Dean Winchester, who took over the shop fourteen years ago, Winchester Flowers and Plants has become something of a local attraction.
“And it’s not just my winning smile,” Mr Winchester jokes. “We’ve got one of the oldest apple trees in the United States growing right here in the middle of the store. She’s well over two-hundred years old, and still going strong.”
When we asked what he planned to do with the prize money, he told us a small portion was earmarked for celebratory pie, while the remainder would be donated to the newly established Bayside Fire Service.
Mr Winchester extended congratulations to the runners up. Cuevas’ Garden in Madison came in second, while Tracy’s in downtown Milwaukee took third place.
Sitting on the countertop in front of the pinboard is a white coffee mug, printed with a hand throwing the rock and roll devil’s horns gesture. The hand is surrounded by flowers, and beneath it are the words “HEAVY PETAL.”
Musical notes float over the page, and the lyrics to Led Zeppelin’s Ramble On are overlaid in white text.
“Got no time for spreadin’ roots, the time has come to be gone—“
PAGE THREE
Dressed in jeans and a black AC/DC t-shirt, Dean Winchester stands to the left of the frame, facing away. His right arm is tattooed with a simple pattern of flowers and leaves.
The apple tree described in the newspaper clippings stands to the right, growing tall in the middle of the shop, branches spreading wide.
In front of Dean is a work bench, on which a number of potted plants sit. Most prominent is a vine in a dark ceramic pot, marked with the slogan “I Heart Doctor Sexy”
Musical notes float over the page as Dean listens to Led Zeppelin and talks to the vine, encouraging it to grow.
Dean: C’mon, sweetheart. Just a couple of leaves.
Gently, he curves his hand through the vine. Golden wisps of magic swirl around his fingers.
PAGE FOUR
Responding to the magic, the vine—Doctor Sexy from here on out—rapidly grows. Its leaves shoot outward, and it reaches up to touch Dean’s face with more affection than a plant should be capable of. Dean smiles, pleased.
Dean: That’s my girl.
As he speaks, a leaf detaches from the apple tree behind him. It floats slowly down, down, down, to finally land on Dean’s shoulder. It is withered. Dry. Dead.
Dean turns to look at the apple tree in alarm.
PAGE FIVE
Dean stares at the tree, eyes are wide and anxious as he remembers…
The woods of Bayfield, a very long time ago.
In the center of a clearing, Dean—around four years old–stands beside his mother, Mary. She’s dressed in a long, flowing gown. Young Dean is wearing handmade clothes, stitches visible along the seams.
Growing from the earth before them is a young apple tree.
Young Dean: Nuh-uh, this can’t be my tree.
Mary: Why not?
Young Dean: It’s so tiny!
Mary: Give it time, love. Someday it’ll be as big and strong as you, but first you need to help it grow.
Young Dean: Like I helped the sunflower?
Mary: Just like the sunflower.
Young Dean crouches in front of his apple tree, studying it carefully as magic weaves between the leaves.
Mary: Your tree is special Dean. It’s a part of you, so no matter what, you must always listen to what it tells you.
Young Dean: Okay.
Peering through the leaves in awe, young Dean watches the tree grow.
PAGE SIX
Back in the present, just as Mary predicted, the tree is tall and strong. The shop’s tiled floor has been carefully built around the base of the thick trunk, now engraved with Dean’s initials, and the tree’s branches reach up toward the high-domed ceiling. On all sides, countless plants and flowers flank the tree, making the shop feel like a lush forest.
Dean doesn’t notice the glossy leaves and bright flowers of the other plants.
He doesn’t notice the apple tree’s branches still spread wide.
He only has eyes for the dozens of leaves that are dying, dry and shrivelled where they grow. What might be normal for a regular tree is far from it here. This is not just any apple tree.
Dean’s hands spark with magic as he begins to panic.
Dean: No, no, no, no, please—
PAGE SEVEN
Desperate, Dean sends ripples of magic into the tree, pressing his palm to the trunk as he tries to bring the dying leaves back to life.
Dean: Fuck, please— I’m not ready for this. Please.
PAGE EIGHT
As he presses his hand more firmly against the tree, magic flows outward, spreading like veins of golden light through the cracks and crevices of the bark. His hand begins to glow, brighter, brighter, until—
PAGE NINE
—it flares in a blinding burst that radiates outward, obscuring all from sight. The light fades as Dean begs for it to have worked.
Dean: Please, please, please, please, please—
But the leaves are unchanged.
Dean: Dammit.
PAGE TEN
Dean stands beneath his tree, the shadow of its dying branches stretching ominously toward his own across the floor as he stares helplessly. As he watches, another leaf breaks free and falls.
It drifts slowly down to land at his feet, hitting the tiled floor far too gently for something so dreadful.
Dean is silent and afraid.
His tree is withering.

Owen Sound Housing gearing up to start Phase 3 of Odawa Heights
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Owen Sound Housing Company is aiming to begin construction early this summer on its Odawa Heights development’s third phase, which will involve erecting the largest standalone building in the organization’s seven-decade history.
Chair Ruth Lovell Stanners said the five-storey building, which is to include 43 “affordable” units and 16 units with market rental rates, will complete the full build-out of the site on 8th Avenue East, near Notre Dame and Saint-Dominique-Savio schools.
“It’s the biggest phase that we’ve ever done in housing. It’s an ambitious project, but it’s really the most efficient use of the land that we have now. It will give us the greatest number of units that we can possibly get out of the property at this point,” she said in interview.
“That’s why it’s appealing to us to take this rather large step.”
Lovell Stanners said the goal is to have a final site plan application for Phase 3 in front of city council within the next month and begin construction at the end of June.
The organization expects that the first tenants will be able to move into the building in December 2021, provided everything goes as planned.
Owen Sound Housing Company, which was established in 1950 and is a parallel corporation to the Owen Sound Municipal Non-Profit Housing Co., purchased the vacant 4.2-acre property on 8th Avenue East in 2016 for what would become Odawa Heights.
It received site plan approval for a total of 90 units on the site.
The housing company received $2.55 million to complete the $4.2-million first phase of the project, which wrapped up in the summer of 2018 and included the construction of 28 units in seven buildings.
Twenty-two of those units are affordable, which means tenants are charged 80 per cent of market rent, while the other six are “market rent” units.
The housing company received $880,000 in government funding for Phase 2, which involved building six more affordable units and two market rent units. That work wrapped up last summer.
In January, provincial and federal representatives announced at Odawa Heights that the Owen Sound Housing Company would receive $6.2 million from the Canada-Ontario Community Housing Initiative and the Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative for Phase 3.
However, it will cost about $12 million to construct the final building.
At a meeting Monday night, city council agreed to loan Owen Sound Housing Company just over $3.1 million to help it complete Phase 3.
Director of corporate services Kate Allan told council that the city expects the “construction financing” will be required in March 2021 and will be repaid by October 2021 once the organization receives long-term financing upon completing the project.
The city will be charging 2.5 per cent interest on the loan, which will generate about $6,500 in revenue for each month the loan is outstanding, she said.
“That being said, the city would likely draw on our own line of credit in order to facilitate this loan, so our own interest costs would balance out any revenue to have a nil-effect on our bottom line,” she said.
“Anecdotally, I’ll just add that we recognize how important this development is to the City of Owen Sound and the great need for housing.”
Owen Sound also provided Owen Sound Housing Company with an $800,000 loan in 2017 to help finance Phase 1 of the project. About $720,000 is outstanding, Allan said, and is expected to be paid in full in 2022.
Lovell Stanners said the organization will also be asking Grey County for a $3.1 million loan for Phase 3.
County housing director Anne Marie Shaw said she is bringing a report to council May 28 to assist with that construction loan financing.
Lovell Stanners said the loans will carry the project over until the organization can receive a mortgage, once construction is complete, she said.
“We see ourselves needing a mortgage of about $6 million, which we’ve worked all out in a business plan,” she said.
The plan for Phase 3 comes amid a severe shortage of affordable housing in Owen Sound, which has a rental vacancy rate of about 1.9 per cent, according to the latest figures from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.
As of Wednesday, there were about 700 Grey County residents on a waiting list for county housing.
Owen Sound Housing and the Owen Sound Municipal Non-Profit Housing Corp. also provide affordable housing at the 50-unit Bayfield Landing, 90-unit Ordnance Park and 60-unit Bluewater Ridge.

Life in a Northern Town: Cooking, Eating, and Other Adventures along Lake Superior by Mary Dougherty
"Generations of men and women have stood on these beaches, listened to water rushing over these basalt rocks, and picked wild blueberries here well before I sailed into the Bayfield harbor. The families of those men and women are still here, tethered to a place where they can slip behind their ancestor’s eyes and take in essentially the same view." —from the Introduction In 2007, Mary Dougherty and her family moved from St. Paul to the tiny Bayfield Peninsula, surrounded by the waters of Lake Superior and Chequamegon Bay in far northwestern Wisconsin. There they set out to live their lives against a backdrop of waterfalls, beaches, farm stands, and a quintessential small town of 487 people. Through recipes, stories, and photos, this book explores what it means to nourish a family and a community. As Mary Dougherty incorporates what is grown and raised in northern Wisconsin into her family’s favorite dishes, she continues a cultural tradition begun by immigrants hundreds of years ago. The result is a one-of-a-kind collection of globally and regionally inspired recipes featuring local cheeses, meats, and produce from the farmers in and around Bayfield—pho made with beef bones from a farm in Mellen, Indian meatballs with curry powder made in Washburn, chowder with corn and potatoes from a farm stand in Ashland. As she knits herself into the Bayfield community, Dougherty comes to more fully grasp the intricate relationship between food and community.

Whisky Tour Day 2 - Whisky & Flowers
Busy day up and down the QEW where we learned about making and tasting whisky.   Bonus stop at Schenck’s Nurseries.   Fabulous Dinner with our hosts at Rapscallions.   Onward.
We had big plans for Day 2: three Niagara distilleries to visit so we had better get a move on.   First order of business was to make reservations at Dillons because they require it - spoiler alert: it was our favourite tour of the day.   Planning the route was no big issue because our targets were fairly close together along the QEW in the St.Catherines / Niagara area.   Remember last year’s tour we had many days that were 8+ hrs driving, so a couple 15 minute hops are nothing.
First stop of the Day was Wayne Gretzky’s distillery near Niagara-on-the-Lake.   This was a combined winery and distillery with a very posh visitors center.   There was a wine bar, a whiskey bar, an outdoor patio area with grill, a winter skating pond in the shape of a hockey rink - and the whole facility backed onto another winery (Trius).   First whisky tour was sold out so we joined the second tour ($25) and got a good lesson in whisky making, pot distilling, and most importantly, tasting.  It seemed our tour-mates knew something of whisky, while we were tasting novices that only knew what we liked or didn't.   Enlightening.
After Gretzky’s we backtracked on the QEW toward stop #2 Dillons, but on a whim we decided to pop into at Schenck’s Nursery to see if our Bayfield friend Lou Schenck would join us at Dillons.   In the office we saw Lou’s niece Colleen (who we have met before) but nobody could locate Lou.   Fortunately Lou drove up (with Bab’s on the phone) just as we were giving up on him - lucky us.   Though we only had a few minutes before our scheduled Dillons tour Lou quickly walked us through some of the facility - acres and acres of computer operated greenhouses, orchards, vineyard.   And what I had thought was a cute little nursery operation was in fact a sophisticated, long-established, nursery business having global sourcing, markets all around North America, retail and wholesale sales channels, sales forecasting models, and all kinds of scientific innovations.   Who knew!  We learned Lou can catch a cold if a guy in Vietnam sneezes.   Sadly Lou could not join us on the whisky tour for the afternoon but we were very glad we stopped in at Schenck’s.
Dillons was the antithesis of Gretzky’s and we enjoyed the contrast.  The posh visitor experience at Gretzky’s was replaced with a nice tasting room and retail center off a gravel parking lot at the end of a field.   Glitz versus charm, corporate versus family.   At Dillon’s our tour ($0) was given by the Master Distiller Jeff Dillon - we benefited from what we learned at Gretzky’s and the whole distilling process was becoming more clear to us.   Best part was feeling the passion Jeff has for his business and his craft.   It was our lucky day again - Dillon’s has just released their first barrel aged Rye Whisky (they already have an unaged version) and we were able to buy a couple bottles from Batch #2!!!!
Last stop was Forty Creek Distillery.   Biggest of the three distilleries visited today, and having a nice tasting room.   We were too late to take catch tour but we did get to sample three of their Ryes.   The bartender was very knowledgable (like Dillons) and it seemed Forty Creek was very successful on many measures.  This reminded me of successful craft brewery Goose Island in Chicago who were bought years ago by whomever owns Budweiser.  So I commented that Forty Creek must be ripe for takeover and we learned that founder John Hall sold to a multinational a few years ago.   Is that the fate of successful craft distillers?
We ended the day with dinner at one of brother Tom’s favourite restaurants Rapscallion, in Hamilton.   This place has a hole-in-the-wall feel but has a cool menu of unusual (mostly meat) offerings served on small plate.    Anne Marie arrived to the restaurant straight from her office in Mississauga (whew) just in time to enjoy a delicious dinner.   From our experience these two (Tom and Anne) are always great for finding deliocious, interesting eateries - wherever they might be .... in Cleveland, Chicago, or especially where they live.
Too busy today to enjoy James Joyce, plus I can’t find my bluetooth speaker that we need to listen to Dubliners.   We’ll sort that out in the coming days
Tomorrow we’re off to Windsor and Detroit.   Hiram Walkers and Detroit Tigers.

“Well, I found it now: you’re like coming home…”
… after the vanished #13 and the not-quite-normal atmosphere of Covid passes (and autumnal temperatures) of #14, Maverick #15 was back in its rightful July slot and all was right with the world. Maverick always had a more domestic familiarity than your bigger impersonal festivals: less commercial, more relaxed, and that was all the more welcome this year.
Part of that familial familiarity is a rolling cast of favourites who return year on year, and it was one of those, the seemingly ubiquitous Lachlan Bryan, who with his band The Wildes was opening the festival on the Barn stage with a rollicking Oz Badland outlaw ballad as we passed heading for the Moonshine to catch the Drew Young Band (below), another returning artist.
Tumblr media
Their set drawn largely from his long awaited album Bourbon & Bad Decisions showcased his rich molasses-and-whiskey timbre (they don’t call him the Americana crooner for nothing) against easygoing Eaglesy ambles like Falling Down, the brisk Petty-meets-CSN stride of Try Me with its tight harmonies courtesy of Kelly Bayfield, and Fix My Broken Blue’s Little Green Apples-via-Laurel Canyon hybrid, with some lovely pedal steel-mimicking guitar from Andy Trill.
Tumblr media
Back at the Barn, a brand new name for Plunger (and Maverick) was San Franciscan artist/producer Mickelson (above): an impassioned songwriter with a fantastically sinewy Springsteeny vocal as evidenced in the protest of UNarmed American, the cleverly jerky off-kilter beat and piano underpinning of Jagged Tooth and a Bruce-cum-Neil epic sprawl Hercules And Ironman with hypnotic banjo from Scott himself. Probably Plunger’s discovery of the festival.
The Blue Highways (below) are well known to Plunger, although we’d always somehow missed the chance to see them live before. Another band who mine a rich seam of blue collar New Jersey epics (although stripped by necessity of some of the big production frills of Long Way To The Ground) there was still bags of Brucey bombast in the gritty vocal, expansive riffs, and frequent stop/start, quiet-bit-and-slow-build-back moments in Only A Matter Of Love and He Worked, as well as a highly impressive near a cappella opener, Tonight My Love.
Tumblr media
Dirty Cello got huge appreciation (and not a little dancing) at the Peacock with their crowd-pleasing hillbilly hoedown two-step takes on popular favourites like Gimme Shelter, Proud Mary, Devil Went Down To Georgia, reminding Plunger most of a raucous cello-led Hayseed Dixie (and not really our thing!) A bit more polish came from Karen Jonas (below) back at the Barn. The slow Nashvilletastic waltz of Out In Palm Tree Paradise, a rattling cover of Johnny Cash’s Big River and the full-on Patsy-Clinesque cry-into-your-beer break-up farewell of Country Songs spelt ‘country’ with a capital C… marvellous!
Tumblr media
Despite a brief moment of “wait a minute… this is BLUES!” (cf everything Plunger have ever written) at her Hookerish opening number, Kara Grainger (below) delivered a soulful set at the Barn with a notably Crayish cover of Breaking Up Somebody’s Home, and a slow TTB-like southern soul take on Storyville’s Good Day For The Blues with some judicious subtle slide to allay our fears.
Tumblr media
Passing the Peacock gave us the briefest hearing of The Baskery, a frankly bonkers but skilful Swedish banjo-led jug band that mixed everything from slick late-Mac multi-part vocals and freeform trancey noodling to a rockabilly-beat-backed The Damned riff topped with Andrews Sisters harmonies. Oh, and an a cappella rendition of a 17th century Swedish folk song, as you do…
Tumblr media
With the Barn headliners Vandoliers carrying on the same hell-for-leather stomp vibe of Dirty Cello, Plunger opted for the mellow duo The Black Feathers (above) down at the Moonshine. Two voices with restrained guitar accompaniment held the crowd spellbound down by the waterside, with high Old Time harmonies on an apt Down By The River, surprise covers like a junkerdash run at Spirit In The Sky, the slick Jackson Browne-does-trad-folk Lighthouse On Fire and the fragile heartbreaking harmonies and pauses of Strangers In The Dark. A particular favourite was the confessional rehab song Holy Water with its call-and-response duetting and atmospheric Crosbyish chords… you could have heard a pin drop (were it not for the oompa-oompa drifting down from the Barn). A suitably chilled close to day one of Maverick #15.

305 US Climate Mayors commit to adopt, honor and uphold Paris Climate Agreement goals
STATEMENT FROM THE CLIMATE MAYORS IN RESPONSE TO PRESIDENT TRUMP’S WITHDRAWAL FROM THE PARIS CLIMATE AGREEMENT
The President’s denial of global warming is getting a cold reception from America’s cities.
As 305 US Mayors representing 61 million Americans, we will adopt, honor, and uphold the commitments to the goals enshrined in the Paris Agreement. We will intensify efforts to meet each of our cities’ current climate goals, push for new action to meet the 1.5 degrees Celsius target, and work together to create a 21st century clean energy economy.
We will continue to lead. We are increasing investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency. We will buy and create more demand for electric cars and trucks. We will increase our efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions, create a clean energy economy, and stand for environmental justice. And if the President wants to break the promises made to our allies enshrined in the historic Paris Agreement, we’ll build and strengthen relationships around the world to protect the planet from devastating climate risks.
The world cannot wait — and neither will we.

187 US Climate Mayors commit to adopt, honor and uphold Paris Climate Agreement goals
STATEMENT FROM THE CLIMATE MAYORS IN RESPONSE TO PRESIDENT TRUMP’S WITHDRAWAL FROM THE PARIS CLIMATE AGREEMENT June 1st 2017
The President’s denial of global warming is getting a cold reception from America’s cities.
As 187 US Mayors representing 52 million Americans, we will adopt, honor, and uphold the commitments to the goals enshrined in the Paris Agreement.
