Prompt #17: Fade
It was not the first time Cain had fought Dravanians, but he would never get used to the rush of heat from their flames and the sound of crunching bones as they devoured their victims. He slammed his shield against the maw of a lesser dragon, using all his strength to plunge the sword into the top of its head. He gripped the hilt tightly so it wouldn’t be wrenched from his grasp the dragon fell back, dead.
Cain only took a moment to look at it. It wasn’t very big, probably the size of a Chocobo. He had never actually managed to kill a Dravanian before, but he didn’t have the time to celebrate. He flicked his sword, trying to get the ichor off of his blade as he rushed into the chaos. It was supposed to have been a simple mission. They were tasked with escorting a caravan from Falcon’s Nest to an outpost out in the Western Highlands. So how, how had it gone so bad so quickly?
He ducked under the lashing tail of a Dravanian in its death throes. The knight that had killed it made eye contact with him and nodded before throwing himself back into the chaos. Cain didn’t have time to think much of it. Right now, he had to find them. Auvant and Charon, his cousins and adopted brothers, were somewhere in the chaos, and he had to find them. He had promised his aunt that he would watch over the youngest, Charon, and he wouldn’t let the woman down. So he struggled through the heat and ash and blood of battle until, at last, he found him.
“Charon!” he called, but the young man didn’t have time to respond. He was too busy fighting off a dragon, desperately twisting and turning to dodge its claws and breath. Cain didn’t even think- he leaped forward and slammed his shield into the side of the dragon’s face, cutting off its fire and stumbling it. He swore, looking at Charon as the dragon stumbled and struggled to recover, throwing its head back and forth. “Are you alright?” “It’ll be easy, he said,” Charon groaned. “Just an escort mission, he said. If we survive this, Auvant owes us a moon of free drinks.” Cain let out a bark of laughter, turning and planting his feet into the ground.
“I agree, but let’s survive this, first,” he told Charon as the dragon turned its steely gaze back at them. It let out an ear-piercing shriek before lunging at them. Charon caught its claws with his shield, grunting against the force of the hit before being thrown back by the strength of the dragon. He groaned as he landed hard on his back, the air being knocked out of him. His vision narrowed and he gasped for breath, only vaguely aware that the Dravanian was approaching him. It stood over him, lifting a claw to stomp on him. He barely had enough time to roll and dodge the stomp that was meant to crush his head.
He struggled to his hands and feet, gasping as he tried to stand on his hands and feet. But he was too slow. The Dravanian was upon him once more and he slammed his eyes shut, waiting for the inevitable end that never came. Instead, there was a roar and he opened his eyes, stunned to see Charon had jumped onto the Dravanian’s back, stabbing and slicing at its neck with his daggers. The young knight was screaming something- a prayer, or cursing, or perhaps both- as he stabbed and stabbed, struggling the stay on the flailing dragon’s back as it thrashed its wings to try and throw off its attacker. It let out a gurgle before eventually collapsing. Charon heaved and jumped off the dragon’s back, covered in its blood and ichor, blue eyes wild with aggression as he looked at Cain.
“I thought you were supposed to be saving me!” He gasped, and Cain let out a weak chuckle, reaching up and placing a hand on his shoulder.
“Plans change,” he said. The chaos around them was calming as the dragons were either killed or retreated. He looked around slowly, his eyes widening as the dragon behind Charon lifted itself to its feet. It took one last breath, the familiar gurgling as it gathered flame in its throat. Cain had no time to respond. He gripped his cousin’s shoulder tighter and pushed him back, hard enough to push him to the ground and on his back.
“H-hey!” Charon protested, his eyes widening as he looked up, realizing what was happening. Cain heard his name behind called as the dragon let out one last burst of flame. Cain only had just enought time to bring his shield up, trying to cover his face, but it was too late. Flame licked his face and he let out a cry of pain. He was only vaguely aware of a man- Auvant?- appearing behind the Dravanian and finishing it off. His face went numb as he fell back, his consciousness fading.
His vision blurred as he watching Charon and Auvant lean over him, desperation in their eyes. His vision faded into black as he heard people yelling around him. It was like this only for a few minutes before he finally lost consciousness.

Character Name: Charon Greystone (Title: The Undaunted)
Race: Half Wildwood Elezen, half Midlander Hyur
Nationality: Ishgardian
Gender: Male
Occupation: Blacksmith, formally served as a knight under House Hallienarte
Age: 48
Appearance details: Charon stands a bit shorter than the average Wildwood Elezen male. He has a slender build but is all lean, hard muscle from his days in the forge. He has short, black hair and one blue eye and one pale, milky blind eye that he keeps covered with an eyepatch.
Personality: Charon is a bit different from his fellow Ishgardians- A carefree man who is, frankly, a bit of a workaholic. Having really no sense of time (unless it involves a business prospect), he’s habitually late to almost every event he gets invited to. He sees the best in people and truly believes that people are inherently good. He has a tendency to pry into other people’s business and is cheerful to the point of annoyance. He’s a bit of a perfectionist- when he becomes interested in something or is involved in a project, he doesn’t stop until everything meets his high standards. He’s naturally good at almost everything he does- whether it be his craft, cooking, singing, or whatever. So, when he finds something that he isn’t good at, or can’t figure out, he grows extremely frustrated and focuses all his energy to master said craft.
The prospect of family is very important to Charon, and he’ll make any sacrifices he needs in order to help someone he deems as family. Whether they need money, or even a shoulder to cry on, one can always rely on Charon being there to help. He is also a loyal friend and comrade, and even though he has pretty much retired from knighthood, he’s been known to aid House Hallienarte when they call for his blade.
Religious beliefs/philosophy: Charon was born and raise in Ishgard and was raised under the Holy See. He worships Halone the Fury as his patron diety. He is a believer in the Twelve, but he really doesn’t practice his faith too often, preferring to keep any real worship in a more private, personal setting.
Childhood: Charon was born the bastard son of Nathaniel Beaumont, a knight of House Hallienarte. When he was born, his mother, a Midlander Hyur, abandoned him on his father’s doorstep with a note- “Do what you want with him. I want nothing to do with a bastard.” No one but Nathaniel knows who Charon’s mother is. Nathaniel originally wanted to leave Charon in an orphanage, for he was ashamed of his infidelity, but his wife, Esther, was a kind, forgiving woman. She insisted that they keep the baby- after all, the circumstances of his birth were hardly his fault. So, he was raised as an equal with his older half brother, Kylar, and his cousin, Cain.
As Charon grew older, he dreamed of becoming a Knight and serving House Hallienarte, just as his father, brother, and cousin did. Most wanted little to do with a bastard, but Kylar encouraged Charon to follow his dreams. He was naturally talented with a blade, and stood out among his peers. He officially became a knight at the tender age of 17 summers old.
Kylar left the knighthood after an incident took Cain’s sight and left Charon scarred. His brother ran off with a Gridanian woman by the name of Morgana, leaving his prized lance with Charon. Charon never saw his brother alive again.
Recent history: After years of service to House Hallienarte, Charon retired at 34 summers old and opened a forge. Blacksmithing had always been a passion for him, and he became known throughout Ishgard for his quality weapons (and occasional decoration, when it was commissioned.) When the Calamity happened, he was all but forced to stay in Ishgard to continue forging weapons to support the Dragonsong War. When the Warrior of Light came to Ishgard and ended the war, Charon ventured a bit more out into the open world for wider business prospects.
He now frequents Gridania and Limsa Lominsa, where his family lives. You can find him mostly in his Forge when he is in Ishgard.
Notable relationships:
Cain Beaumont- Charon’s cousin, he sees the man as more of a brother. He blames himself for Cain’s blindness and will jump at every opportunity to help the older Elezen, even though Cain doesn’t blame Charon for his lack of sight. The two are very close, and Cain is always the first person Charon goes to when he needs advice or a sympathetic ear.
Kylar Beaumont: Charon’s older brother by five summers, there was no person in the word that he was closest to. Kylar always encouraged Charon, and was always there for him when he needed him most. Charon loved his older brother very much, and was inconsolable for moons after he figured out about his death. Kylar actually received his nickname from Charon- Kylar not being his actual name- and no one knows why he called him this, other than Cain and the brothers.
Nathaniel and Esther Beaumont: Charon has a decent relationship with his parents, if a bit of a strained one. Esther always treated Charon kindly and fairly, and Charon loves her very much for it. He has a bit more of a distant relationship with his father, who cares for Charon but sees him as proof of his one digression. The two became a bit overbearing after Kylar’s death, babying their only remaining son and often trying to set him up with other women so he could give them heirs to the family name. Charon hates this, and it’s caused a bit of strain with their relationship as of late.
Fell Krieger: Charon’s nephew, he didn’t meet Raise until recently, but he had always known of his existence. He’s a bit more overprotective of Fell than his other siblings, since Fell is a bit smaller and weaker than the other two. Although he enjoys teasing Fell, being around him is a bit hard for Charon, since Fell are both the spitting image of their father and his deceased brother. He insists that Fell come to him for new weapons and for repairing his old ones, not trusting any other blacksmith with the fate of his nephew.
Raise Krieger: Charon gets along best with his oldest nephew, since the two are so similar in personality. Charon actually gave Raise Kylar’s lance, Ascalon. He’ll occasionally spar with Raise, and the two are pretty evenly matched as far as skill and strength. He enjoys going out to drink and having fun with his nephew.
Larka Krieger: Charon isn’t as close to his niece as he is with Fell and Raise, mostly due to Larka’s busy lifestyle. He enjoys her cooking, and the two like to talk and exchange recipes. He admires and respects Larka’s healing abilities, actually asking for lessons on how to use conjury. He’s alright at it, but not nearly at the skill level of his niece.
Adele Krieger: Charon’s great niece, he absolutely loves spoiling this child rotten. She has him wrapped around her little finger, and he knows it. He will go out of his way to buy her gifts, ranging from toys to expensive clothing. The two bond over their mutual love for Chocobos. He adores his little niece and would be more than happy to give her the world.
Strengths, talents, and points of pride:
A skilled swordsman, his skills lie in lances, daggers, swords and bows. He has a tendency to favor Daggers over anything
A Master Blacksmith
A pretty good chef
 Loyal, chivalrous and brave
Weaknesses, detriments:
Easily discouraged when things don’t work out as he planned
Overly trusting
Reckless
Over idealistic
Perfectionist
Ambitions/Goals:
Nowadays, Charon simply goes with the flow. He doesn’t really have any immediate goals that he’s striving for at the moment, perfectly content with the lot he has been given in life. His parents insist that they find no shame in him inheriting the family name and estate, but he’d rather be in his Forge than run a family estate.

🖐 tracing fingers against your muse’ skin or over a scar/other (For Charon I AM WEAK)
(Sorry this one took so long, I wanted it to be perfect.)Charon watched her from his bed, buried comfortably in the soft furs and down blankets. She sat at the vanity, gently pulling the brush through her long, dark hair, the light from the fireplace dancing across her pale features. She didn’t notice him staring at her at first- she almost never did, which was amazing, considering he had a hard time taking his eyes off of her. It took her a few minutes to realize he was watching her and she paused, looking at him through the mirror. She looked away, blushing prettily as she put the brush down.“What?” Her soft voice broke the silence and he smiled, tucking his arms under the feather soft pillows. He tilted his head.“Nothing. I just like looking at you. That’s all,” he muttered. Her blush deepened and she lifted her gaze, still staring at him through the mirror. His smile widened and he lifted a hand, beckoning her to the bed. She stood, turning gracefully. Everything she did was graceful, he thought as she walked- no, glided- across the room. The nightgown he bought her- sky blue, the color of her eyes- flowed over her in waves, gently caressing soft, pale skin. His fingers twitched under the pillow as she crawled into bed with him. He longed to touch that soft skin…
She pulled the silk gown tighter across her chest, still blushing as she laid down, facing him. She smiled at him, biting her lip shyly as he rolled over. He knew what she was doing, hiding the scar on her chest from him. He had seen if before, of course, and she found it ugly, but to him, it was just another part of her, a part that he loved and cherished.
He reached out, taking one of her hands in his own. He kissed her calloused fingers, his eyes not leaving hers as his lips trailed down her hand. He kissed the small cuts on her palm, worn from days of working the gardens of Gridania. Her face was flushed a pretty pink as she watched him, rough lips leaving trails of fire up her arm, around her soft shoulder. He paid special attention to the sensitive skin of her neck, and she giggled girlishly as his nose tickled her collarbone. He smiled into her, nuzzling her gently.“You’re beautiful,” he murmured, his voice muffled by her skin as he looked up at her. She reached up, cupping his face gently. Her thumb gently caressed the scar over his eye. He closed them, enjoying her touch, imagining that her hand was smoothing away the hideous scar. She never judged him for it. He loved that about her.
He opened his eyes slightly, staring up at her with half lidded blue orbs. He pressed a gentle kiss to her chest, right at the beginning of her scar. He heard her soft gasp and looked up at her for any signs of hesitation or resistance. She looked away slightly, self conscious, but not stopping him. He kissed the scar again, his hand gently resting on her thigh, right over the silken nightgown.
“So beautiful. You’re an angel, you know?” He smiled up at her and she blushed again, pulling his head close to her chest in an embrace. He pressed his ear to her heart, right over her scar, listening to the soft beating of her heart. “I love you.”
“I love you, too,” she whispered, so quietly that he almost didn’t hear her over the crackling of the fireplace. He reached up, lacing his fingers with hers and closing his eyes. They wouldn’t go further this night- he promised her he would never do anything that made her uncomfortable. He felt her nuzzle the top of his head gently.
“Verev,” he murmured, her name falling from his lips like a prayer. She hummed softly.
“Hmmm?”
“…. Sweet dreams.”
