Review: JetBlue Mint, one of the most luxurious ways to travel domestically
If you’re flying internationally and are looking for a premium business class product with all the familiar trappings — a lie-flat seat, full meals, complimentary drinks, and a huge in-flight-entertainment screen with plenty of high-quality viewing options — you don’t have to look too far. But if you’re traveling domestically, your options are far more limited. JetBlue’s Mint offers all of the above and is widely regarded as being up there with the best premium-class domestic offerings (Delta One is also pretty great), and we recently had the opportunity to put it to the test on a flight between New York and San Francisco.
JetBlue planes have a Mint cabin on a variety of long-haul domestic flights, in cities including Boston, New York, Fort Lauderdale, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Las Vegas. On my flight, as on most Mint flights, there were five Mint rows in the front of the plane, alternating between a 2-2 and a 1-1 layout. (The four single seats have their own sliding doors, making them essentially private minisuites.)
There’s no dedicated JetBlue lounge at JFK (though there’s an AerLingus lounge in the same terminal, so it would be great if Mint passengers were allowed access), but priority boarding allowed us onto the plane first. I was unfortunately not seated in one of the single-seat “thrones,” but there was a small privacy divider between me and my seatmate.
Waiting at my seat were a blanket, pillow, and amenity kit as well as a welcome note from the two flight attendants, a nice personal touch. As I was getting situated, one of the flight attendants came by to introduce herself and acclimate me to the seat; she also offered a refreshing welcome drink of mint, lime, and club soda, with or without vodka.
The amenity kit contained all the essentials: moisturizers, socks, an eye mask, earplugs, toothbrush and toothpaste, and a pen.
For someone who’s used to being crammed into an economy seat, the Mint offering was incredibly spacious, 22 inches wide and converting into a 6-foot-8-inch lie-flat bed. Power outlets, a nook holding a bottle of water, and a reading light were to my left, a remote for the TV and seat controls were in the left-side armrest, a large table swung down from between the seats (which were also separated by a small cocktail table), and a mesh pouch beneath the screen provided enough space for the essentials.
The in-flight entertainment monitor was also absolutely massive, 15 inches across and operated by touch as well as a remote. I love that JetBlue offers live TV through DirecTV, and the selection of about 60 movies was also well-curated.
But onto the food. The menu here is created by the well-regarded New York restaurant Saxon + Parole, and it’s clear that a lot of thought went into it.
A welcome snack of onion dip and taro chips were served after takeoff — nothing special, but a nice way to start the meal.
Next, we had our choice of three of five entrees, served as small plates: a butter lettuce salad with orange segments, creme fraiche dressing, and pistachios; roasted butternut squash salad with arugula, pomegranate, pumpkin seeds, and cotija; shrimp and grits with tomato ragout, mascarpone, cheddar, and pickled peppers; roast chicken breast with parsnip puree, Brussels sprouts, pickled blackberries, and chicken jus; and five spice-braised short rib with Parmesan polenta.
I opted for the butternut squash salad, the shrimp and grits, and the chicken, and — no exaggeration — it was the best meal I’ve ever eaten on an airplane. Just the fact that I was served three individual dishes was very appreciated, but I would have been very satisfied if I’d received any of these as standalones (either on a plane or at a nice restaurant). The roll was warm and soft, served with a bright, high-quality olive oil. The salad was fresh and bright, with a little crunch from the pumpkin seeds and pomegranate and plenty of chunks of nicely roasted squash. The chicken was tender and not dried out at all, the parsnip puree was creamy and flavorful, the blackberries gave it a bright pop, and the rich jus tied it all together. The shrimp were large and perfectly cooked, the grits were nice and creamy, and the tomato ragout and pickled peppers helped kick the flavor up a few notches.
For dessert, we were served a fruit plate with lots of fresh blackberries, orange slices, strawberries, and fresh mint, as well as scoops of caramel and vanilla ice cream from Brooklyn’s acclaimed Blue Marble. It was a stellar cap to an essentially perfect in-flight meal.
It’s notoriously difficult to nail down in-flight dining because the dryness of the cabin dulls our palates, but each dish was perfectly seasoned and full of big, bold, and vibrant flavors in some unexpected places. (Seriously, who would think to pair chicken breast with pickled blackberries?) The wine selection, chosen by wine writer Jon Bonné, was also on point, with a dry sparkling Raventos rose from Spain, a bright chardonnay from Leo Steen in Santa Cruz, a floral gruner veltliner from Santa Barbara County’s Tatomer Meerseboden, a bold young zinfandel from California’s Turley, and berry-forward, easy-drinking Sonoma Coast pinot noir from Failla on offer.
Snacks, fruit, cappuccino and espresso from Brooklyn Roasting Co., coffee and tea from Dunkin’ Donuts, and drinks including Angry Orchard cider, Brooklyn Lager, Lagunitas Pale Ale, Sam Adams IPA, Bacardi rum, Bombay Sapphire gin, Bulleit bourbon, and Grey Goose vodka were also available on demand. Flight attendants were always nearby, were always very friendly, and always remembered my drink order.
After the meal (and a jaunt down the aisle to help with digestion), I decided to settle in for a nap and lowered the seat down to lie-flat mode. There’s something insanely novel and luxurious about being able to lie completely flat, with a comfortable pillow under your head and a warm blanket covering you, 35,000 feet in the air, and it’s something that everyone should experience at least once. (A word of warning, though: It’ll completely spoil you for ever sitting in economy again.) Cocooned into my little space, I dozed off and got a couple hours of blissfully uninterrupted sleep before repositioning the seat into my best approximation of a La-Z-Boy recliner, ordering a bourbon, and watching a movie in the deep blue mood lighting. A cookie from Christina Tosi's Milk Bar was served as we begun our descent, another nice touch.
When we landed shortly after the movie finished, and I got up from my seat and emerged blinking into the bright and hectic terminal, my thoughts weren’t of the days of sightseeing ahead of me, but on the insanely luxurious and comfortable flight I’d just had. From the friendliness of the flight attendants to the size and softness of the seat to the absolutely delicious meal, flying JetBlue Mint was one of the finest flight experiences I’ve ever had, and I’m certifiably spoiled for all other economy flights I’ll ever take.
An upgrade from economy to Mint was provided at no cost to the author.

Michael Avenatti Biography And Profile
Tumblr media
Michael Avenatti was born on 16 February 1971. Avenatti is a high-profile American attorney, commentator and entrepreneur based in Los Angeles, California. He routinely appears on television and in the print media as a commentator on a range of issues and is widely considered one of the foremost trial lawyers in the nation, with trial victories in multiple states and venues across the country.
Michael often works closely with the press and media in connection with his legal practice – an area in which most lawyers falter and under-utilize. During his career, he has represented parties in a number of lawsuits that have gained international media attention, including two cases featured on the news magazine show 60 Minutes, as well as in cases brought against the National Football League, various celebrity defendants, including Paris Hilton and Jim Carrey, athletes, high-ranking business executives, and Fortune 100 companies.
During his career, Michael has been responsible as lead counsel for over $1 Billion in verdicts and settlements, including many well in excess of $10,000,000.
Michael Avenatti Early Years Michael lived throughout the United States while growing up but ultimately attended high school in St. Louis, Missouri. Michael graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia with a major in Political Science. He subsequently attended law school at George Washington University, where he had the benefit of working closely with Professor Johnathan Turley on constitutional issues relating to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). Michael later graduated Order of the Coif, first in his class.
In 2003, the law school honored Michael by establishing the Michael J. Avenatti Award for Excellence in Pre-Trial and Trial Advocacy, an annual award given to the member of the graduating Juris Doctor class who demonstrates excellence in pre-trial and trial advocacy. And in 2010, George Washington University recognized Michael by awarding him with an Alumni Achievement Award, the highest form of recognition given by the University, which was founded in 1821.
While in college and later in law school, Michael worked at a political opposition research and media firm run by Rahm Emanuel (who later became White House Chief of Staff and is presently the Mayor of Chicago). During his time there, Michael worked on over 150 campaigns in 42 states, including multiple gubernatorial and congressional campaigns (i.e. Joe Biden’s U.S. Senate Campaign).
Michael Avenatti Legal Career Immediately following law school, Michael began working at O’Melveny & Myers in Los Angeles, alongside Daniel Petrocelli, who previously represented the Goldman family in its case against O.J. Simpson. He assisted Petrocelli on multiple legal matters, including the representation of singer Christina Aguilera and litigation surrounding the movie K-19: The Widowmaker, and worked extensively on the defense of the Eagles’ Don Henley and Glen Frey in various cases, including in a well-publicized suit brought by former bandmate Don Felder against the band and Irving Azoff.
After three years at O’Melveny, he joined Greene Broillet & Wheeler, a Los Angeles boutique litigation firm. While there, Michael spearheaded many high-profile cases, including a $10 million defamation case against Paris Hilton; a successful idea theft lawsuit involving the reality show The Apprentice and its producer, Mark Burnett, as well as Donald Trump; and a large corporate multi-national embezzlement case involving in excess of $42,000,000.
In 2007, Michael formed the law firm Eagan Avenatti, LLP (fka Eagan O’Malley & Avenatti, LLP), with offices in Newport Beach, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Since co-founding the firm, Michael has been responsible for securing a number of large verdicts and settlements as lead counsel, including:
April 2017 $454 Million verdict after a jury trial in Federal Court in Los Angeles in a fraud case against Kimberly-Clark (NYSE: KMB) and Halyard Health (NYSE: HYH) that was featured on 60 Minutes (won every jury question as to every defendant);
$80.5 million class action settlement against Service Corporation International (NYSE: SCI) in another case featured on 60 Minutes and in the international press (settlement reached in the middle of trial);
$41 million jury verdict after a nearly five-week trial in New Jersey; a $39 million settlement in a case involving the alleged theft of trade secrets;
$13 million plus verdict after a six week jury trial in Palm Beach, Florida (won every jury question as to every defendant).
In 2015, Michael prevailed against the National Football League after a two-week jury trial in Federal District Court in Dallas, Texas after obtaining a court order requiring Jerry Jones to attend trial and be cross-examined.
Michael Avenatti routinely receives numerous honors and awards for his legal work, including being voted by his peers as the top trial lawyer of the year.

A tasting of wines from Lodi, California, with Abe Schoener
Abe and Christina preparing the tasting
Today I attended at tasting hosted by Abe Schooner (Scholium Project) at Sager & Wilde on the wines of Lodi, California. The idea behind this tasting was to provide us with an introduction to a growing region that’s both not well known, and where it is known it is misunderstood. Abe now makes most of his wines from Lodi, and was keen for us to be able to look at a range of different wines grown here.
Lodi is a growing region in the north centre of California. It wasn’t the first place in California to be planted – perhaps the fourth or fifth – but currently it’s the region with the most old vines. The earliest plantings in the state were near San Diego, but these have been eradicated. Next to receive the vine was Los Angeles, which still has two old vine vineyards. After that, Napa and Sonoma were planted, but there are only a few places in these two regions with old vines: commerce drove the eradication and replanting of old vine vineyards. It was because you could get good money for the grapes that it was economically justifiable to replant.
In Lodi, the grape most widely planted was Flame Tokay, which is more suited to eating than winemaking. It’s very aromatic and quite tannic, it has no acidity and it has plenty of bitterness. Most Tokay was ripped out in the 1950s and 1960s, to be replaced with other varieties. But the old vineyards with other varieties, such as Cinsault, Carignan and Zinfandel remained: they weren’t ripped out because the grape prices didn’t justify replanting, and they weren’t as awful as Tokay.
Abe Schoener
The important climatic influence in Lodi is the Mokelumne river. This comes from the Sierras and is very cold, even in midsummer. This brings a cooling influence. And where the river has snaked its way around, it has laid down light alluvial soils which are the best in the region for viticulture. Elsewhere, there’s heavy, richer soil from flood deposits over thousands of years.
Abe was introduced to Lodi by Tegan Passalacqua, who makes his own wines as well as working as winemaker for Turley. Tegan worked a harvest with Eben Sadie, and brought back news to California that Eben was making some very serious wines. Because of the old vine connection, Abe included three South African wines in this tasting: two from Eben and one from Craig Hawkins.
This was an interesting tasting: some great wines showing the potential of the region, but also some fairly gross over-ripe, over-oaked wines.
Sadie Family Mev Kirsten Chenin Blanc 2016 Stellenbosch, South Africa Planted in 1905. Complex and intense with lovely ripe pear and peach notes, as a bit of apple. Has a fine spiciness here with a lovely acid streak. Real finesse, weight and intensity here. 94/100
Acquiesce Picpoul Blanc 2017 Lodi, California 12.5% alcohol. Very fresh, delicate and fine with a nice mineral streak sitting under the lovely citrus fruit. It has a nice texture and weight in the mouth with freshness, delicacy and purity. Lovely stony, fine grained texture. 90/100
Sandlands Kirschenmann Chenin Blanc 2015 Lodi, California 12% alcohol. Very fine grained deep sand with a high quartz content. Vines are quite young. Rootsocks of varying age, grafted over 5 years ago. Selection massale from all over California. Complex, waxy and intense with lovely spiciness. Lovely acid core here and notes of citrus, pear and ripe apple, as well as a hint of toast. Great intensity and focus: this really tastes like Chenin. 93/100
Scholium Project FTP-C Kirschenmann Chenin Blanc 2017 Lodi, California 12.5% alcohol. Slightly cloudy. Has an open, apple, spicy nose. The palate is bright with good acidity and lovely cheese, wax, lemon and apple fruit. Tangy finish. Such an interesting wine with lovely weight. Has some reductive hints, but apparently this was much more reductive when it was young. 94/100
Scholium Project Bechtold Ranch 1MN 2016 Lodi, California This is Cinsault from old vines. Whole cluster, no punchdown or pump over. Abe has been letting the cap dry out since 2014. He’s only had one year where this didn’t work when some of the caps became acetic, in 2017. Bechtold Ranch was planted in about 1870 by German immigrants, on its own roots in deep sandy soil, with some loam. Cloudy. Aromatic, slightly lifted nose of sweet cherries and raspberries. Such a lovely fresh, textural palate with smooth, fine-grained red cherries and spice. Has a nice sour cherry character and a hint of cheesiness. So nice with a slightly wild edge. 93/100
Michael David Bechtold Ranch Ancient Vine Cinsault 2016 Lodi, California Fresh, clean, pure and sweetly fruited. Very accessible with sweet cherries and plums, and some raspberry notes. Tastes sweet, easy and fruity. 88/100
Turley Bechtold Ranch Cinsault 2016 Lodi, California 12.5% alcohol. Supple, smooth and fine-grained with attractive strawberry and raspberry fruit. Supple and quite elegant with ripeness and poise. Sweet but nicely poised and balanced. Expressive in a light-ish style, but has some substance. 92/100
Sadie Family Soldaat 2016 Swartland, South Africa Grenache. Lovely mouthfeel with some green sappy, stemmy notes supporting a palate of fresh raspberry and some cherry, with a herby, slightly cheesy twist and a touch of damson savouriness. Such a bright, expressive wine. 94/100
Klinker Brick Carignane 2015 Lodi, California 14.5% alcohol. Tastes ripe, sweet and has some angular cedary oak. A bit unpleasant really: too sweet, ripe and oaky. 80/100
St Amant Winery Lodi Native Marian’s Vineyard Zinfandel 2015 Mokelumne River, Lodi, Calfornia 14.7% alcohol. Sweet strawberry and cherry fruit with a fine spiciness. Rich and sweet and lush with a very soft mouthfeel. Ripe in a crowd-pleasing style. 87/100
Turley Kirschenmann Zinfandel 2016 Lodi, California Planted 1920 on its own roots. Very sweetly fruited with smooth, ripe red cherry and berry fruits. Concentrated and softly structured with very sweet fruit, but still retains a bit of freshness, with a twist of raspberry crunch. 91/100
Scholium Project FTP-Z Kirschenmann Red 2016 Lodi, California Zinfandel. Smooth and sweet with a bit of sour cherry and damson bitterness on the finish. Has a little greenness with some spicy framing, and a twist of spicy wildness. Ripe and sweet but with some nice complexity. 91/100
Michael David Freakshow Zinfandel 2016 Lodi, California Sweet, ripe and jammy with raspberry jam, strawberry, some mint and a savoury, cedary quality from the intrusive oak. Very hard to drink. Too ripe and oaky. 81/100
Testalonga El Bandito Cortez Chenin Blanc 2016 Swartland, South Africa Very fresh, linear and juicy with lovely taut lemon and pear fruit, a hint of pith, and some grapefruit and tangerine freshness. Nice texture and grip here. Juicy, mineral and expressive. 93/100
Scholium VLV Reserve Bokisch Vista Luna Ranch 2016 Lodi, California 13.9% alcohol. From the transition of the flatness of Lodi and the Sierra foothills. Powerful and expressive with ripe apple and pear fruit, with some pithy notes and a bit of spice. Very bold and intense with some structure. Has some honey and a bit of toast. Phenolic. 89/100

Team McAuliffe emails reveal effort to ‘kill this’ Fox News story
Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe’s campaign raised eyebrows by spending nearly $60,000 to hire a high-profile attorney known for masterminding election-related legal challenges. When Fox News sent the campaign a request for comment, the McAuliffe campaign scrambled to “kill” the story, according to emails mistakenly sent to Fox News.
Less than a month before Election Day, McAuliffe’s campaign spent $53,680 on the services of the Elias Law Group, a firm that Marc Elias started earlier this year, Fox News previously reported. Elias had formerly worked as a partner at the law firm Perkins Coie, which the Hillary Clinton campaign hired in 2016 in order to conduct opposition research on Donald Trump – research that included the infamous Christopher Steele dossier. Republicans have accused Elias of lying to hide the Clinton campaign’s role in funding the dossier.
HOW TO VOTE IN THE VIRGINIA GUBERNATORIAL ELECTION ON NOVEMBER 2
Elias has represented Democrats in efforts to contest elections. Going into the 2020 election, he represented Democrats challenging a Texas law barring “straight-ticket voting.”
House Republicans accused Elias of having a “serious conflict of interest” when he represented Iowa Democratic candidate Rita Hart in her effort to overturn the results of her extremely narrow loss to Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks. GOP members House Administration Committee said that Elias had a conflict because he and Perkins Coie – where he still worked at the time – also represented half of the Democratic committee members who would be deciding the case.
George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley wrote that McAuliffe hiring Elias is an “astonishing move.”
“There are a host of election lawyers but McAuliffe selected an attorney accused of lying to the media, advancing rejected conspiracy theories, and currently involved in a major federal investigation that has already led to the indictment of his former partner,” Turley wrote.
“McAuliffe may be preparing to challenge any win by Republican Glenn Youngkin,” he wrote on Twitter.
Fox News reached out to the McAuliffe campaign for comment on Turley’s suggestion. McAuliffe spokesperson Christina Freundlich responded to the email with a message apparently meant for colleagues, not for Fox News.
“Can we try to kill this,” Freundlich wrote.

McAuliffe campaign email to Fox News
The McAuliffe campaign did not give any response to Fox News on the record.
Both McAuliffe and his Republican opponent, Glenn Youngkin, have pledged to “absolutely” accept the results of the election once certified.
Yet Turley raised concerns because McAuliffe has embraced Stacey Abrams’ claims about the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial race.
MCAULIFFE DRAWS TINY CROWDS AS CAMPAIGN ENTERS FINAL STRETCH
“She would be the governor of Georgia today had the governor of Georgia not disenfranchised 1.4 million Georgia voters before the election,” McAuliffe said as he introduced Abrams at a campaign event earlier this month. “That’s what happened to Stacey Abrams. They took the votes away.”

McAuliffe had previously nodded along as Abrams repeated what some have described as her “Big Lie” about the 2018 election. Fact-checkers with PolitiFact and USA Today found “no proof” and “little empirical evidence” that Brian Kemp, who served as Georgia’s secretary of state while running against Abrams, stole the election.
A Youngkin campaign spokesperson responded to McAuliffe’s remarks by suggesting the Democrat may not accept the results of the election.
“McAuliffe’s continued claims that multiple elections were stolen raise serious doubts about whether he will accept his own impending defeat and concede when he loses to Glenn Youngkin,” the spokesperson told Fox News at the time.
Recent events suggest the McAuliffe campaign is struggling. The Democrat drew tiny crowds to recent campaign events despite bringing in the big guns of the Democratic Party to help, including President Biden, former President Barack Obama, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Stacey Abrams. A Fox News poll released Thursday found Youngkin ahead by 8 points among likely voters, with 53% to McAuliffe’s 45%.
