I feel the need to point out the importance of the mwrrs pronoun being used for Icefur here, Echostep is VERY angry with her

It would, a Clan also wouldn't respect it. It would get "overruled" by the other warriors. Clan cats don't have the same concept of "parental ownership" that some human cultures do-- if you are not taking the future warriors you're introducing seriously, it causes social conflict.

(This isn't to say there's less abuse or that this is always a good thing. It's that names are taken very seriously in Clan Culture.)

With hypothetical Stonechat-tooth and Stonewing though, they actually don't have the same prefix! It would come across even more clearly in Clanmew, where birds are named after their songs.

Stonewing = Bonbeof (useful rock + bird wing)

Stonechat-tooth = Kha'khawigi (stonechat + middle tooth)

European Stonechats have a very distinct "Click-Click! WEE!" sound, as if they're knapping a spearhead and then making a tweet about it. So "stone" and "stonechat" would actually make two very different names, while still keeping the meaning that one kitten is a stone, while the other kitten makes interpretive noises for it.

(Their nickname in Clanmew is Wigi. It's a stone, wigi.)

Since Bonetooth is winning though, in Clanmew that's Babengi, OR Babengrok. Ki is fangs, Gi is middle teeth, and Grok is molars.

It's a manipulative habit that she's not even fully aware she does. Right now they are alone, before she needed them to save her life she was probably using the rarrs pronoun, but now she needs something and is pulling the family card.)

some cceu clanmew names

I love Clanmew. It's one of my favourite things ever (again: big fan of BetterBones), I've always wanted to try my hand at conlangs. What better way to start off than creating a dialect for an already existing conlang? Credits to @/bonefall for the Base Clanmew. The Cloudclan Clanmew is actually pretty important because I need to work some things out with it to come up with some things with the Featherseekers (one of the three groups in CCEU).

I'm not sure what I'll call it, so I've been calling it Cloudclan's Clanmew in my head, but I might change it to something more along the lines of Cloudmew, Feathermew, or Islandmew. Cloudmew being from Cloudclan and the -mew. Feathermew being from the Featherseekers and -mew. Annnd Islandmew being from the fact they live on an Island...and -mew. More about the island thing later, I'm still figuring out how it fits into everything. (Edit: as of August 2nd, 2024, the official name for it is Islandmew.)

I'm not too sure how to go about with conlangs or dialects, but for now, I've chosen two cats with names that have words that aren't in the Base Clanmew lexicon and tried to translate their names to Clanmew...and thus having to create a new word or two in the process.

First up we have...

Spiderlilystar! (Reyskepaishai)

Okay, so Spiderlilystar doesn't exactly have a design? I haven't thought too much about her, she's more a nebulous being to me. She'll get more love later due to her having overthrown Saturnstar during Saturnstar's reign (been trying to come up with a new name for Saturnstar, it's just a placeholder). But, anyways. Spiderlillies aren't in Base Clanmew, but they're in the CCEU Clanmew.

The word I chose for spiderlily is skepai. Ske being the word for "spider" (cobspiders, specifically, as in spiders that make cobwebs. The most generic term for spider in Clanmew), + pai being petal. It's because the spiderlily flower looks sorta of like spider legs curling up when they die to me, so like, what if the cats called them the equivalent of spider petal? The original word would've been something more along the lines of spider petal flower, or spider petal plant, but plant/flower part got omitted overtime due to wordiness.

The word used in Spiderlillystars name specifically is reyskepai. So, when spiderlillies in her name are very specifically red spiderlillies. Red like blood. The cats actually have three words for spiderlily here---skepai, generic for all spiderlillies, regardless of colour; reyskepai, red spiderlillies; and oskskepai, white spiderlillies. They see both red and white spiderlillies, so it felt like it makes sense that they would have words for both colours.

So, anyways, Spiderlilystar's name in Cloudclan's Clanmew would be Reyskepaishai. Reyskepai being "spiderlily (red)", and shai being "star".

Second we have...

Beatleeyes! (Skssspir)

Beatleeyes...I actually tend to just call him Kabutomushi, as in Beatle. As in the Japanese Rhinoceros Beatle. Most of the stories actually focus on him during his apprenticeship, when he's Beatlepaw, but I decided to go with his warrior name.

I looked everywhere in the Clanmew lexicon for a word for beatle--- kbkbkb, as in buzzed, as in for the flight of buzzing insects such as beetles, flies, bees, but not beatle itself. So, I did some more thinking---so much thinking that translating Beatleeyes name actually ended up with a whole new tradition in Cloudclan.

When Cloudclan talks about beatles, they're most often referring to the beatles they use in Beatlefighting. The specific beatles are Japanese Rhinoceros Beatles.

They're honestly really cool. I love these things.

Beatlekit was named Beatlekit by Fernstorm because of his ferocious nature. I looked up some sounds beatles make---they make this weird hissing sound when disturbed. I tried sounding it out, and came up with sksss. They actually use this word so much for beatles that it's an overarching term---it refers to all beatles, not just the beatles they use for Beatlefighting. I actually considered having the word for beatle be based off the sound they make when fighting, but then I decided to go with the other sound instead.

Thus: the first part of his name, sksss.

The suffix, eyes, isn't exactly referring to his actual eyes? Spiderlilystar gave him the suffix eyes for his good eyesight. So, instead of being literal and going with the actual word for eye (ipa), I chose pir for sight. So: Sksspir. His name can be translated as either Beatlesight or Beatleeyes. I prefer Beatleeyes.

Anyways, that wraps up the names thing. I hope it makes sense? These were really fun to do and come up with, really!

Skubibauss en Pao

To try and regain motivation to work on my translation of Starkit's Prophecy into Clanmew (the Warrior Cats conlang of @troutfur and @bonefall), I wrote an original story in Clanmew, set in the Better Bones AU and inspired by a story I read in a book of Filipino folktales from the 1920s.

Provided here is that story, an English translation, and an interlinear gloss.

I've kind of simplified the gloss? I still say, like, jussive and genitive, but I've also used "verbed" rather than "verb.PST" and such. It's mostly in the interest of legibility.

In the gloss, a full stop . represents multiple English morphemes being part of the same Clanmew morpheme, and a hyphen - represents the boundary between two Clanmew morphemes.

Lacking words for "give" and "take," I commandeered "prreerreerr," extending it in meaning from "to bring" to "to bring forward, to present" and from there to "to surrender or give," and "hageeshi," extending it in meaning from "to bring" to "to bring with or take."

An attempt at Clanmew (Part 1?)

Recently, I stumbled onto a warrior cats based conlang called Clanmew. From what I can tell, it's by tumblr users Bonefall and Troutfur.

I really want to try my hand at learning this. I'll be posting some update logs as I go, to practice! Beware some mistakes, as like I said, I'm learning. The translation will be in bold. This short introduction will be of a random oc i made on the spot, Sageheart (Meiababun)

(Apologies, as the sentence might be similar to some of the example sentences from the post I'm learning from, as I did reference that.)

Meiababun: Urrmeer! Meiababun. Ssufwang gryyr. Kachgorrl Sbass-ulnyams.

Approximate translation: Hello, fellow clanmate! I am Sageheart. I am a tom. I am a RiverClan warrior.

And that's the first introduction down! This is basically what I understand so far, but even now I'm sort of struggling. Hopefully I'll get sort of better as I go along, making more complex sentences.

Pishkaf om Chakchak: The Parable of the Squirrels

A Clan Culture story, translated into Clanmew by @bonefall and @troutfur

A ThunderClan parable, taught to kits as soon as they're able to understand, that stresses the cultural importance of managing prey populations. Gray squirrels are an invasive species, notoriously aggressive towards the native red squirrel and driving them extinct across the island.

ThunderClan's reputation of being bossy and obsessed with squirrels is not unfounded; this myth is quite important to understanding their cultural self-perception as "defenders of the forest"! They are easily offended by the unauthorized killing of their beloved red squirrels, and their leaders have historically restricted the trade of their beautiful pelts.

[NOTE: In BB, SkyClan was never forgotten. It continues to be remembered, largely as an antagonist, in myths such as these... and before his quest, Firestar begins to question the accuracy of what he had been taught.]

Translator's Notes;

This story is told in the original Clanmew, a direct translation, and then an English translation.

Though Troutfur hails from RiverClan, and Bonefall from ShadowClan, they have chosen to use ThunderClan-centric pronouns to preserve how a kitten typically first hears the myth.

On Honoring Mothers and Grandmothers: Matrilineal triple naming in Pfurr Clanmew.

A Clan cat's name is as much a living thing as the cat that bears it. From birth to death it grows and changes, becoming a record of a cat's history. Life stages, accomplishments, shames, and in Pfurr Clanmew even a cat's very origins are recorded in it.

A typical Pfurr Clanmew name consists of three parts, a personal name, the name of one's wipfurr (roughly mother), and the name of one's awi (roughly maternal grandmother). Though typically only one's personal name is used conversationally, in more formal situations such as ceremonies, Clan meetings, and first introductions the use of the full form is much more common.

It also serves an eminently practical purpose in reminding cats of their common ancestors up to two generations back. That is essential information when one is seeking a mate.

As an example, let's look at the following case:

The ThunderClan warrior Hollytuft has the full-form name of Waskraofa-ye-Keyababun-en-Urramswash, Hollytuft from Cinderheart of Sorreltail. Her wipfurr in turn bore the name Keyababun-ye-Urramswash-en-Sawaborrl, Cinderheart from Sorreltail of Willowpelt. Thus while her name only encodes historical memory two generations back, with her mother around she's capable to track a generation further back.

Her Pipfurrs (fathers, roughly) bore the following full names; Raorgabrrlrr-ye-Pishkafsheef-en-Kafyarshai, Lionblaze from Squirrelflight of Firestar; Liafihess-ye-Urramswash-en-Sawaborrl, Poppyfrost from Sorreltail of Willowpelt; and Lepechoop-en-Bayysi, Berrynose from Daisy.

Immediately one may notice that the third pipfurr does not have all three names! That is because as a barn cat, Berrynose's wipfurr had no knowledge of her own wipfurr's name, thus no second name to pass down as her son's third name. She's known as plain old Bayysi, the transliteration of the English name Daisy which she was known by at the barn.

This is very similar to how Lionblaze's own awi was known only as Kafyarshai, Firestar. Thus the full name of his daughter, Lionblaze's wipfurr, was only Pishkafsheef-ye-Kafyarshai, Squirrelflight from Firestar. This naming custom marks outsiders joining one generation down, not uncoincidentally reinforcing an attitude within the Clans that full integration can only come over the span of two generations.

Hollytuft's siblings from her pipfurr Poppyfrost carry the names Bosgohussk-ye-Liafihess-en-Urramswash and Obeofe-ye-Liafihess-en-Urramswash, Molewhisker from Poppyfrost of Sorreltail and Cherryfall from Poppyfrost of Sorreltail. Had Poppyfrost and Cinderheart not remained part of the same pfurr, making them instead rabir (cousins) to Hollytuft, their second and third names would serve as a reminder of both their common origin and of the relation between their wipfurr.

It is pretty unusual to see a cat carrying a pipfurr-line name but it does ocassionally happen, more often than not as part of a dishonor title. A prime example would be Gaorkach-ye-Besbabun-en-Byochshai, Tigerclaw from Pineheart of Oakstar, who was renamed upon being exiled. His former name was Gaorckach-ye-Saorpwyyarr-en-Rruqaneep, Tigerclaw from Leopardfoot of Sweetbriar, a name which he refused to let go of and which he eventually carried into his self-given leader name of Gaorshai-ye-Saorpwyyarr-en-Rruqaneep, Tigerstar from Leopardfoot of Sweetbriar.

A cat may very well elect to wear a pipfurr-line name as a badge of pride however! An example from recent memory would be the RiverClan leader Gawgloonshai-ye-Ekshbabun-en-Lubroffaws, Crookedstar from Shellheart of Blackbee, after his pipfurr and his pipfurr's wipfurr. The name was adopted in recognition of the abdication of responsibility his wipfurr took in raising him after the accident that gave him his iconic twisted jaw and how his primary pipfurr stepped up to fill the role as best he could.

Another example, although only temporary and which has become a bit of a stain in the cats in question's history would be Raorgabrrlrr-ye-Bayabkach-en-Rreenponma and Arkrbufr-ye-Bayabkach-en-Rreenponma, Lionblaze from Brambleclaw of Goldenflower and Jayfeather from Brambleclaw of Goldenflower. (Or to those affiliated with the Dark Forest: Raorgabrrlrr-ye-Bayabkach-en-Gaorshai and Arkrbufr-ye-Bayabkach-en-Gaorshai, Lionblaze from Brambleclaw of Tigerstar and Jayfeather from Brambleclaw of Tigerstar.) These names, self-adopted in defiance to calls for branding them with the name of their biological mother, symbolized their total rejection of their awi, the role in the Prophecy of the Three, and their push to associate more with their kin on their pipfurr's side.

Lexicon

Isletmew is a dialect of Clanmew (created by @bonefall​). It is the sister dialect to Tropicalmew. Due to both dialects being closely intertwined you may see words. Isletmew is used by Islet Guild. My main goal currently is to add more words that these cats would know, and possibly change some currently existing words to fit better.

(Due to the nature of Isletmew I will also be using base words from Clanmew and will put an asterisk * to show if it’s a base word)

Absolutely FANTASTIC understanding of the social nuances of Clanmew, including the shifting pronouns and rejection of the Star-title. These are some really interesting characters, I love the use of Blight as a future name for that apprentice!

For the first line there, here's how you can correct the adjective;

"Neob nyyr chawb urrKachworr"

Plum goes first, and then it's described with "Rotten"!

Since nyyr is an adjective, you don't need to add -wang if you don't want to! It's still valid, but it's like Rotten and Rottenness in English.

I also find it interesting that Vervainpaw refers to the blight with clanmate pronouns. It really shows that they identify with the blight, seeing it as a respected ally in this moment and not as an enemy or a terrible thing.

(Plumstar is using the nyams pronoun. Even though Vervainpaw is her child she hardly ever uses this pronoun. She uses it in public where it she thinks it's expected and she uses it when she's talking her way past their boundaries or praising them for doing something she ordered them to do. It's a manipulative habit that she's not even fully aware she does. Right now they are alone, before she needed them to save her life she was probably using the rarrs pronoun, but now she needs something and is pulling the family card.)
