In this excerpt, Pelletier used Zizek’s writing on subjectivity in cyberspace/ notion of interpassivity to analyse different articulations of educational play and the ways in which they define interactivity, agency and pleasure. Interpassivity is characterised in relation to the common notion of interactivity, and refers to the way digital technologies angle people as responders. While I was reading the introduction, the word “Tamagotchi” caught my attention immediately, because in the past (or...till today? :P), i used to play it every single day. I would keep it in my pocket and use it to connect to my friends’ tamagotchi so that they could play together. The fact that it was pocket sized made it convenient to sneak into my school, and play it during my lessons because I felt the “need” to ensure my tamagotchi was well fed so that it would be happy. Other than my tamagotchi, I bought the whole collection of pixel chix. Similar to the tamagotchi, I had to constantly look after the character inside the game. With just a few clicks of the button, I was able to play games, feed and bathe them.

In retrospect, after this insightful reading, I have been delegating my agency to the games’ needs that sustained my enjoyment. By catering to the needs of my tamagotchi and pixel chix, it evoke a sense of fulfilment and satisfaction when they constantly express their happiness.

Interpassivity can be seen in comedies as well, for instance, in the show F.R.I.E.N.D.S, there were certain instances when i did not laugh, but “canned laughter” filled that silence in my head. The canned laughter allows me to be passive during the show. Hence, it shows that activity and passivity, though opposing terms, can be seen as mutually constitutive.

Next, the different versions of interpassivity in cyberspace really intrigued me, especially version 1 on Emancipatory which I thought was very relevant to Singapore’s context.

The 4 versions that Pelletier reviewed are:

Emancipatory: Games as pain relievers

Conservative: Games as sensual temptations

Postmodern: Games as replicas of non virtual life

Interpassivity: Games as dramatic stages for reality construction

For version 1, I resonated strongly with the statement “cyberspaces frees us from the authority of traditional social structures, and allows us to explore multiple and shifting identities” and that “identity construction becomes a playful activity. Prensky posits a “revolutionary” approach called “digital games based learning which i found really useful when i was young. The first benefit was that the points system in the games was an incentive that motivated me to be more accountable in my tasks management. For instance, in my primary school, my teacher introduced to us the Magic School Bus interactive science game. I remembered that we were studying the digestive tract of the human body, whenever we answered the MCQ question correctly, we were given points, and these points could be converted into mini soda bubbles to help the magic school bus that is stuck in the oesophagus to escape through the mouth. It indelibly spurred me on to take ownership of my learning and apply the knowledge acquired in the questions. The next benefit for me was making the learning fun. As a mischievous child, I hated studying because it was boring and I would rather play sports than sit in the chair and do my homework. Hence, these games, though mediocre to some, reignited my passion for learning, and really brought out the competitive side of me to ensure I score the most points and get that magic school bus out before anyone else did. Besides that, as a visual person, interactive learning allows me to visualise textbook content better which facilitated my learning process. Thus, I believe that games played an imperative role in the beginning stages of my education.

Some parents would critic games as a waste of time which I found really questionable. I understand that in Singapore, especially in an asian society, there is a pressing need for your children to be the best, or be ahead of their class. Thus, they rather promote rote learning than inculcating an inquisitive mind. This type of ideology can be effective in the short run, but how about the future? Many of my friends actually “burnt out” from studying because learning became monotonous, and did not incite any excitement anymore. On a more serious note, a close friend of mine committed suicide many years ago because she could not take the pressures of our society. Perpetual anxiety from the constant exams with zero breaks, competitions with peers and being castigated from by her parents drove her to the brink of insanity. The pleasure of learning was completely stolen from her by the authority of formal education and training systems. This is the reason why I believe that games in education play a vital role in a child’s life. No matter how mediocre, no matter how trivial or no matter how tedious it is, the education system should think of innovative ways to make the process of learning fun, allow the child to take a break and not be fixated on getting good results and competing with others to see who gets better grades. "it takes a village to raise a child", this statement holds a lot of truth to it. A childhood is everything to an individual, and they should not be deprived of it because of social stigma, or living up to the expectations of society.
