Can Coco Swap (COCO) make money from Web 3.0?
Can Coco Swap (COCO) make money from Web 3.0?
Coco Swap (COCO) is an attempt to cash in on the potential popularity of Web 3.0. To explain, today’s internet, or Web 2.0, is a centralized system. For example, much of today’s web operates on centralized cloud platforms, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS). In contrast, Web 3.0 is a decentralized system in which the web will operate off a wide variety of devices. In particular, Web 3.0 will…

Gamabunta is that you?
This show has been on a pretty good run lately. We had the vacation arc, haunted school, our festival fun, a day in the life of Urara, some romantic developments, Rin entering the wedding industry, and Karen as a knight. The defeats of Girinma and Arachnea were both suitably epic and inspiring. Well forget all that because it’s a Gamao episode and in true Gamao form, he ruins any goodwill we may have had for him. He can’t even do a last chance black mask monster transformation episode well. Let’s take a look.
The Plot
Cinq Lumieres Academy is having an all-grade level 4 kilometer race, and Nozomi is trying to get out of participating, but Rin keeps insisting she practice. Rin doesn’t have a lot of time TO practice with Nozomi, between her responsibilities to the Futsal Club and having to tend to the family store. More on this later, because it’s time to flimsily set up Nightmare’s scheme this episode.
Gamao is sitting on a bench when he’s approached by Kawarino. Gamao begs the senior executive for a management position at Nightmare but Kawarino remarks that his accomplishments so far amount to nothing. He says maybe he could change his mind if he were to obtain the Dream Collet, and considers giving Gamao the black paper, but decides not to before he disappears. However, Gamao discovers that Girinma "accidentally” left it behind for him, and is convinced he’ll be able to get into upper management. As he runs off to enact his plan, Kawrino reappears and snidely remarks to himself that he doesn’t have much faith in the frog.
We return to Nozomi and Rin’s running practice A few key shots of Rin show that she’s extremely tired but pressing on, because she really wants to repeat her first place title from last year. Karen notices this and decides that they should all join in the practice, so the next day when they run the practice course, all five girls and even Coco and Nuts are present. They begin to climb to a hill that could rival anything in San Francisco, and Nozomi starts to give up, but as she stops to encourage her friend, Rin succumbs to fatigue and collapses.
Tumblr media
Everyone gets Rin back to Natts House and when she’s feeling better, she opens up to Nozomi, saying she wanted to do for Nozomi what Nozomi did for her when they were in elementary school. We flash back to a time in their youth when the school had a race, and Rin was the favorite to win, but she tripped and fell and almost gave up running entirely until Nozomi caught up to her and encouraged her to finish the race together. Nozomi promises to do her best in the race for Rin’s sake.
It’s important to note that the route for this race leaves the Cinq Lumieres campus and gets into the town (which I am realizing has never been named). There are signs along the route that point the way, and Gamao has taken a position as a sign holder at a junction. When he sees the Precures coming, he turns the sign to divert them off the route away from the other students, and when he has them all gathered in a dead end forest, he turns the ground into a beyblade arena crater and makes his presence known. When they naturally refuse to hand over the Dream Collet, he transforms and so do they. He tries to mow them over like Tasmanian Devil, zooming around the pit like fat beyblade.
Tumblr media
I’m not kidding that’s his plan
The Precures are understandably tired as they’ve been running, but after he mocks them for running for no reason, Dream gets riled up and retorts that trying hard at something isn’t pointless at all, and then they all kick his ass. He pulls out his black paper, but clearly he wasn’t aware of the side effects when it latches onto his face and turns him giant. Now a giant, mindless toad monster, he leaps into the air and comes crashing down on Lemonade, Mint, and Aqua. He smooshes Rouge as well, and then tries to attack the fairies, who are watching from the edge of the pit.
Tumblr media
Dream manages to catch his tongue before he can hurt them, and the other Cures emerge, one beneath each foot, lifting him up and throwing him into the wall. With Milk’s help, they summon the Symphony Set and perform Precure Five Explosion, finishing Gamao off once and for all. He will not be missed.
They make their way back to the race route and realize as they turn back into the school grounds that they’re in last place, ruining Rin’s chances at a repeat victory. However, she’s happy enough that she gets to finish together with her friends, just like she did all those years ago. Nozomi declares a race to the finish and sprints across the finish line ahead of everyone else as the episode closes out.
Tumblr media
The Analysis
As you may have gathered from my introduction, I don’t have a very high opinion on this episode. Sure, it has some nice character beats, but it doesn’t introduce anything new or build on any facets we haven’t seen before, except to give us another reason why Nozomi and Rin are close friends. It’s not offensively bad or anything, I don’t think there’s any episodes that I outright hate in this franchise, but it’s bottom tier for this show. There’s very little narrative payoff to Rin’s plot in the episode. She overworked herself to the point of collapsing to motivate Nozomi, and ultimately Nozomi did internalize the importance of the race from Rin’s perspective, which she repeated during the battle. It’s nice but I’ve grown to expect more meaningful declarations during these pivotal villain defeat episodes than “I helped her as a kid and she wants to help me now.” The whole point of Five Explosion is a manifestation that they’re stronger together than apart, but this episode isn’t about the full team’s unity, so it falls flat. If it hadn’t been Gamao’s send-off I might have liked it a smidge better, or if it had been Hadenya attacking instead, or even Bunbee, then it may have made sense.
Moving over to Gamao, for a black mask final battle, this fell far short of what Girinma and Arachnea put the girls through. He didn’t seem any more threatening than a strong Kowaina, he only really got in one attack on the girls as a monster before they took him down with Five Explosion. He had a pretty cool effect of being so massive and fast that he generated really fast air currents but they didn’t do any damage to anyone. This battle is a ton of wasted potential. The best part of the fight was actually before he used the black mask. Spinning around the arena like he did was clever, and it worked better than just about anything else he’s ever done. Gamao’s shortfalling is that he’s lazy and shortsighted, he wants to take the easy way out, his plans amount to simply beating the girls up and that’s it. Compare this to Bloody from the previous episode, who nearly talked Nuts into just handing it over, and well, Gamao comes out of this unfavorably. About the only good thing I can say about him is that his black mask form looks really cool, and it’s huger than any we’ve seen so far. I really wish they’d used it more. If they’d swapped him out with Girinma in episodes 23-24 I would have liked that a lot more, it would give Gamao a better sendoff and it feels more appropriate that the weakest villain is the first to go. Alas.
Lastly, the art quality in this episode is in the toilet and that might be the biggest factor in making it seem underwhelming. The characters appear grossly deformed and oddly proportioned a lot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even when they’re kicking Gamao’s ass in the fight, which is a series of dynamic still frames, the quality is poor. There’s a shot when Coco and Nuts step in to announce that they’ll be running with the girls, and their models just bounce into the frame like they leaped into the air and landed, rather than stepping. It was bad and kind of hilarious by the same token.
Tumblr media
This episode feels like an afterthought on both the writing and animation standpoint. The last few have been so-so in visual quality and if you’ve been following along, you know that’s normal for this point in the show, and of course it’s nowhere near as bad as Max Heart could get, but this is an episode that should have had weight to it, and to see it squandered like this makes me sad.
On the upside I will say I enjoy the little back and forth between Nozomi and Milk, ever butting heads. Milk tells Nozomi that they can all do their best in the practice run, while sitting comfortably in Nuts’s bag being kind of a slouch herself. It was amusing.
Speaking of slouches, Coco probably should go for more runs, because next episode he’s putting on some weight after eating a diet of nothing but cream puffs. Look forward to more on that!

Publisher Activision and developer Beenox have shared new information regarding Adventure Mode in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled.
Here are the details, via Beenox co-studio head Thomas Wilson on the PlayStation Blog:
It’s the Survival of the Fastest, and you’ll need to bring your best as you race for the fate of the planet! With Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled, we at Beenox are thrilled to bring back the groundbreaking campaign mode from the original Crash Team Racing, the Adventure Mode, which pits you against the nefarious alien Nitros Oxide. Oxide claims to be the fastest racer in the galaxy, and his challenge is simple: he will square off against the best racer on Earth. If he wins, he turns the planet to a parking lot. If he loses, he leaves Earth alone. Choose your favorite racer, earn your place as Earth’s best by collecting trophies and defeating bosses, and then square off against Oxide to save the planet… talk about high stakes!
The Adventure Mode’s Legacy
My introduction to Crash Team Racing in 1999 was with the Adventure Mode, and it is still the part of the game that has left the biggest impression on me over the years. At Beenox, we believe that so much of the joy of Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled will come from racing against your friends in local or online play. But we also feel strongly that a big part of what made Crash Team Racing special in the ‘90s, and what will make Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled special in 2019, is this single-player campaign experience. It was a unique thing to see a campaign mode in a kart racer. This was relatively new for the genre, and in true Crash Bandicoot fashion it was filled to the brim with the wacky personality you came to expect from the franchise. I remember endless nights honing my skills, feeling that sense of progression, and experiencing the satisfaction of earning new characters as I raced my way to the final confrontation with Oxide. It was the most engaging experience I ever had with a kart racer, which is something that I have kept in mind while working on the Adventure Mode for Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled.
The Adventure Mode: Nitro-Fueled
In bringing the Adventure Mode back, we knew we had to hit all the elements that made the original so special. The challenges are the same—there are trophy races, boss races, relic races, token races, and gem cups. The characters are back—choose from Crash, Coco, Cortex, Polar, Pura, Tiny, or any of the other starting lineup characters you remember from the original. And the thrill of earning new characters (like Ripper Roo and Pinstripe Pontoroo) is still a huge part of the fun.
However, we wanted to take things a step further for Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. Instead of just earning the boss characters like in the original, players will now earn something every time they win a race. Players will be getting new kart parts, character skins, or kart customization items with every victory. Also, players will now earn the boss characters immediately after they beat that boss, instead of after Gem Cups (which now unlock a new set of valuable prizes). This includes the ability to earn Nitros Oxide himself—though that is no easy task!
Finally, players will now have the opportunity to change to any racer, kart, or customization item they have already unlocked at any point in the Adventure Mode. Are you feeling like Crash gives you the best chance in Crash Cove, but Pura will dominate the competition in Tiger Temple? Swap him in! Do you dig that sweet new paint job you got after beating Ripper Roo? Immediately style your kart out with it. Did you earn enough Wumpa Coins to grab N. Trance from the game’s Pit Stop? Get ready to bring that egg-shaped villain into the fray. It’s all about earning new items, new characters, new karts, and making the experience feel like your own.
However, we know that there will be players out there who want to commit to one racer and one kart from the outset, just like in the original. For that reason, players will have the option of playing the Adventure Mode in one of two different ways: Classic or Nitro-Fueled. In the Classic setting, racers will still be earning all of the awesome items, characters, and karts as in the Nitro-Fueled setting, but won’t be able to change their racer or kart in the middle of the Adventure Mode. For those players looking to mix things up along the way, the Nitro-Fueled setting is for you.
An Engaging Single-Player Experience
We’re super excited about everything you can now earn in the Adventure Mode, but it’s important to emphasize that the story and a great single-player experience are still at the heart of it. There are new intro and victory cinematics that give life to each of the boss battles. We’ve spent a lot of effort to make sure that the hub worlds are more detailed than ever before. Working through each hub world and finally beating Oxide will bring an amazing sense of accomplishment. In short, in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, the Adventure Mode will take you for a ride, will test your skills, and will immerse you in the true Crash Team Racing experience!
Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is due out for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch on June 21.

A new platform powered by blockchain technology and cryptocurrency could help save the shipping industry US$5.7bn annually.
That's the aim of Blockshipping, a new Danish company which is soon to launch an initial coin offering (ICO) to kickstart a project that they say will change the way shipping containers are managed.
Blockshipping has been started by a group of Danish shipping and technology experts, with several former Maersk employees on its executive team. One of them is Peter Ludvigsen, the Blockshipping CEO, who has been working in the container industry for almost 40 years, including as CIO for Maersk Line.
Speaking to GTR, Ludvigsen says their platform, which will go under the name Global Shared Container Platform (GSCP), will promote a sharing economy model in the shipping industry - providing an Airbnb-style service for containers.
Based on blockchain technology, the GSCP will serve as a real-time global registry for shipping containers around the world, tracing their locations and operators - a potentially huge market, considering there are currently about 27 million metal freight containers worldwide.
The main target clients are the big container carriers - the likes of Maersk Line, Hapag-Lloyd, CMA CGM and COSCO, but the platform will eventually also include ports, terminals and transport companies. The firm is, according to Ludvigsen, already in dialog with four of the world's 10 biggest container carriers.
He says the platform will allow carriers to efficiently manage transactions related to container handling. Functions include identifying empty containers from other shipping lines, and working with other companies to fill them up.
-When a full import container is being delivered to a warehouse, then normally when the cargo has been stripped it would be returned back empty to the port or to a container depot," Ludvigsen says. -But with our system, we are able to identify that there happens to be an exporter who needs an empty container nearby in the same timeframe. Then we can highlight to the exporter that there is actually an empty container here to use. That means the importer and exporter are each saving an empty container trip, which could have cost as much as US$500 each. So it's an enormous amount of money that they will be saving."
The platform will also seek to automate various processes, such as payments via smart contracts: when a container has arrived, the payment for the service will be automatically processed.
And unlike many other pilots in this space, which still involve payments being done via traditional methods, Blockshipping has issued its own private cryptocurrency, the container platform token (CPT). Pegged to the dollar, CPT allows for clearing and settlement of transactions between the users of the platform. This is not only faster than fiat currency settlement, but it also avoids banking fees and exchange rate fluctuations, Ludvigsen says.
Having already received funding from the Danish Maritime Fund and private backers, the ICO allows supporters to invest with the potential for return. The pre-sale by invitation has now started, and the public token sale opens on April 15. The firm's target is to raise US$24.8mn.
Currently, the company is finalising the specifications for 14 different products, including a container ledger for title of ownership, real-time container location tracking and blockchain-based smart contracts. When the ICO is complete, Blockshipping will appoint three to four software development companies to build the platform.
According to Ludvigsen, an ICO allows them to adopt -an accelerated development approach" and start developing products in parallel.
-If we were obtaining financing in the ordinary way, we would first have to get a small chunk of financing for the first product," he says. -We would then launch that product and then go to the venture capital companies and ask for funding for the next product, and it would take probably three or four years before we would have developed all these 14 different products that we have in our product roadmap."
While the ICO will be Ethereum-based, raising money in its cryptocurrency ether, Blockshipping is yet to make a decision on the architecture of the GSCP. Microsoft's Coco Framework and the Bigchain Database, both private permissioned blockchains, are possible options.
The company hopes to have the first version of the platform ready to pilot in August, before going into production with phase one in January 2019. This will be followed by two further phases where Blockshipping will build and deliver additional products, including using the internet of things to test the use of sensors for real-time container tracking.
There is no doubt shipping is an industry in dire need of increased efficiency and transparency - and not least digital transformation. Container shipping accounts for 60% of all the world's seaborne trade - valued at around US$12tn in 2017. Despite this, it is an industry that has been troubled for years with challenges such as overcapacity and collapses of big container lines. Not helping is the fact that the industry is still dominated by manual and paper-based processes and lack of co-ordination between carriers.
-Many carriers struggle with old systems," Ludvigsen says. -Many of them have 30 to 40-year-old container management systems that that they are spending a fortune maintaining, Yet the operational systems area is not considered high priority for them."
The launch of GCSP is not the first attempt to bring blockchain to the shipping industry. Maersk, for one, is working on a blockchain-powered platform for the entire shipping ecosystem, together with IBM. Earlier this year the parties took their partnership to the next level, launching a joint venture to commercialise and scale their platform.
But Blockshipping does not consider the Maersk-IBM venture a competitor. Whereas the GCSP manages the physical containers, the Maersk-IBM platform aims to streamline processes and documentation related to the content of the containers, such as digitising the bill of lading and automating customs clearance processes.
And as opposed to Maersk's project, the group behind Blockshipping believe the fact that they are not associated with one single carrier will enable them to attract a wide range of carriers, albeit competitors, to collaborate. The goal within the next three to four years is to achieve 60% market coverage with 16 million container units.
-Several of the carriers are in financial dire straits, and we are giving them an opportunity to save US$5.7bn a year, and that's very hard to say no to if you are losing money," Ludvigsen says, although he admits that not everyone would want to work together.
-Maersk may not want to exchange equipment with other east-west carriers, but they may be interested in exchanging containers with north-south carriers, where they have a different mix of customers, so the platform allows a more granular selection of who they want to swap containers with on our platform," he says.

Slick Blue Marble
Facebook reminded me that four years ago today I was happily enjoying a Efes beer and a sheep’s milk pide on a squatty table in Istanbul alley.  I had just crossed eight time zones, flown for 15 hours and been awake for over 30 hours. I was exhausted, but overwhelmingly excited to be in a completely different country. While traveling, I wrote some pretty extensive journal entries on composition paper and one, and then once home transcribed them onto a blog online.
Here’s one of my favorite journal entries from the day after arriving in Istanbul.
Tumblr media
September 19, 2013 Istanbul, Turkey Today was great. I woke up feeling very well rested. I left the room to get breakfast at 9:45 in the hotel’s cafe. Apparently, hotels in Istanbul pride themselves on the quality of their complimentary breakfast service. Our hotel surpassed expectations. There were several types of cheeses(all some color of white,) slices of salami, pastries, toast with several exotic jams, honey still on the comb and of course Coco Puffs. In the corner, I noticed a griddle with a chef making omelets, ordered one, sat down at a table by myself and enjoyed breakfast amongst the other tourists. Judging by the multiple languages and accents being spoken in the little courtyard, I seemed to be the only American. Tom had decided to sleep in to catch up on rest from the flight over, so I was free to explore Istanbul alone for the morning.  After the fine breakfast with the omelet chef, I began exploring the cobblestone streets around our hotel. Up just a few blocks was the Hagia Sophia, one of the iconic fixtures of Istanbul that is a massive church-turned-mosque-turned-museum. Back in the day, Muslims had a habit of not taking too nicely to churches or anything associated with that other bearded prophet of God’s word. Somewhere down the line, a bunch of guys decided that having those pesky Christian-likes keep talking about that Jesus guy all the time was not cool anymore. They then deemed it necessary to turn the churches into mosques, but lacked the effort or desire to build entirely new places of their own. Sometimes, all it took was scribbling out the face of the Virgin Mary on a mural in the hall and moving the altar just a few degrees east to face towards Mecca, and w-Allah!, you can now worship the new bearded Mohammed guy. They may have argued they were just being resourceful…. It was pretty common to see these flip-flopped places of worship like the Hagia Sophia throughout the trip, and it was easy to spot. If you weren’t aware of the story behind this phenomenon, you might think that the guys building the place just got lazy and haphazardly threw an altar in the corner of the room and called it a day, but in actuality, a lot of thought went into measuring the precise degree to face Mecca. Early Muslims were pretty ahead of their time in math and measuring the Earth, so to see this in person was quite fascinating and impressive. After reveling in the religious wonder and nonsense of the Hagia Sophia, I decided to try and navigate the Istanbul Tram. The Tram was the public transit system of Istanbul and was an efficient means to explore the sprawling city. Used by locals and tourists alike, the Tram was essentially an aboveground subway that ran on and across the streets and sidewalks of Istanbul. The tracks of the Tram were inconspicuous and embedded flush with the ground. No gates or railings protected the general public from being hit by the Tram, so merely walking around required a heightened awareness at all times for the Tram flew up and down the streets with no reserve. The danger was compounded for the coming Trams offered no warning save for a soft and unassuming synthetic bell sound and the whirl of the electronic engine. Surprisingly, a quick Google search shows that accidents aren’t as common as you would think. How more drunk and clueless tourists don’t wander into the path of the evil Tram monster every year baffles the mind. I paid for the fare in a machine beside the Tram stop and received a little token. I had no idea where this particular line went, but I hopped on. Two stops later was the Grand Bazaar. Literally every travel show, travel book or travel pamphlet about Istanbul had the Grand Bazaar as a must see, so I took their advice and got off there. I chose to deliberately avoid the Grand Bazaar until later so that I could walk around the streets outside to see the non-touristy and more local parts of Istanbul; to see the “real” side of this foreign place that I was desperate to explore. A few minutes of strolling through the streets I discovered that the location of businesses in Istanbul are situated in a peculiar way. Every shop has a particular niche of items that it sells, and all of them congregate to sell the exact same things in the exact same area. Need a few links of chain? Well, there’s about two whole blocks of stores that just sell chains side by side. Gold, purple, plastic, they got it. Need industrial-sized rolls of leather? There’s a few guys just down the road that claim to have a good deal for you. Sinks? Yep, that way about five blocks. It was clear I had stumbled upon the Home Depot district of Istanbul. I continued downhill on the same street. Had I kept on walking in the same path, I would have walked directly into the Bosphorus.  A man standing behind a lump pile of loose tobacco was manufacturing cigarettes with a cheap rolling device easily found at any local convenience store. I made the mistake of making eye contact with the man and he immediately burst out in Turkish with what I can only assume was his sales pitch offering me cigarettes. Careful not to doubt the fine quality product this man was selling, I decided that this was about the time I should turn back and head towards the Grand Bazaar. Massive wooden doors appearing to be as old as the Ottoman Empire marked the main entrance. They stood very tall and grand and contrasted the single security guard charged with protecting this national icon with only a radio and a metal detector wand. It looked painful for him to do anything other than apathetically watch the crowd of people enter through the doors. My instrument gauge read that precisely 0.5 fucks were being given. At one point he motioned for some guy to put out his cigarette, so I’ll give him credit there. All in hard day’s work for him. Walking further inside the Bazaar, the sensory overload of all the things being displayed from the floor to the tops of the ornate mosaic ceilings was magnificent and overwhelming. Juxtaposing the gorgeous marble structures were t-shirts of Spongebob and crudely made figurines of Obama. There were a few pockets of these cheap touristy stalls, but for the most part, there were a bunch of really, really interesting and exotic things for sell. Fabulous clothes, stationary sets bound in hide from an unknown animal, pottery that held a meaning trapped in time only the faraway peoples from whence it came could decipher, and spices displayed in a spectrum of color that transcended mortal reality. This excitement all transformed into a massive and literal labyrinth of commerce. *** A solid 45 minutes passed looking for the entrance, but I was thoroughly lost. I ended up washing out an exit somewhere completely different and onto a street with even more shops and mosques. On the left read a sign pointing towards a door that read “HAMAMS: Turkish Bath.” I remembered something. On my research before the trip I compiled a list of suggestions the Internet had for things to do in Turkey. Aside from loads of food and historical locations to visit, the most common thing that popped up was Turkish baths. From my limited research on Youtube, a Turkish Bath seemed like a pleasant time. An experience that began in a hot sauna was followed by a wash that culminated with a relaxing massage all performed by a professional crew eager to keep you comfortable. Curiosity gripped me. I stood on the street looking at this sign debating whether to go in. Ever the salesmen the Turkish are, the representative/doorman/hawker from that particular Turkish Bath convinced, if not dragged me inside. A few words of broken English were spoken, and before I knew it, and by not much of a choice, I was now starting the experience of a Turkish Bath.   I was escorted up a flight of stairs to a series of personal locker rooms that faced the lobby of the business. I was issued a small towel and cheap plastic slippers and instructed to change into them. In the lobby was a group of old fat Turkish guys just kind of hanging around. It wasn’t clear who was a worker and who was just there, but they all looked to be doing the same amount of nothing. The door of my locker room faced the lobby and was made of frosted glass, but was still very effectively transparent. Being the only non old-fat-Turkish-guy and in full view, I had their full attention. The stage was set and the audience was seated. It was my time to shine. I often wonder about many moments in my life, and how and what choices led me to those particular times. Most can be explained or rationalized rather simply. This very moment—dropping chow and changing into a towel in full view of these old-fat-Turkish men—was not one of them. I had no choice but to maintain a thousand-yard stare straight through the walls and devoid any thought other than the necessary mechanics of taking underwear off. I can now share sympathy with the ladies of the night in the Red Light District of Amsterdam: beautiful young souls trapped behind glass performing a show with only loneliness in our hearts. The imagery may even be the same, but swap a big rack for a flaccid penis. A different man escorted me to the door of the bath area. He gave me a tour by walking around and motioning towards the different rooms. The first room held the toilets. They were the hole in the ground with a textured surface for your feet kind. These were common in Turkey in the areas not populated by tourists. The main bath area consisted of four big rooms made entirely of blue marble from floor to ceiling. The rooms were situated in a big counter-clockwise curve going back further into the building. Around each corner was another bath room. Each held a few basins of water along the walls and massive marble tables to lie on in the center. With each turn of a corner it became noticeably warmer and more humid. At the very back was a separate room closed off from the others. It has the unassuming title of the “warm room,” but a few minutes locked inside and it becomes the “hot as shit and unable to breath normal room.” My guide gave no instructions, so I stayed in the warm room for as long as what felt appropriate and healthy. Five minutes later, I had succeeded in sweating my scrotum off; the very same scrotum I displayed for the audience of old-fat-Turkish guys in the lobby.   I left the warm room and wandered around the bath area to see what it was I did next. I slithered aimlessly around the bath area for five minutes trying not to slip on the slick blue marble floor or make eye contact with anyone else. I heard the sound of a door open and walked around the corner.  We locked eyes. One of the old-fat-Turkish guys had walked in with a bucket of supplies wearing the same uniform as myself. This uniform revealed a new adjective in his title. Old-fat-hairy-Turkish-guy. Like, wearing a brown sweater hairy. He looked at me and exchanged no words. Not even a wiggle of his mustache was communicated. It was clear he was to be the one. It was time to do the deed. So, like a lamb following its mother with blind faith, I too followed this man into the unknown, or, just into the other room. He made a motion for me to sit down beside the basin of water by splashing a smaller bowl of water onto the marble seat. I sat down and he immediately started splashing me with water from the basin. It was almost unbearably too hot, but after a few splashes I was soaked and had become acclimated to the temperature. On one hand he wore a mitten made of abrasive loofah type material and began to rub my shoulders and back. I'm assuming it was to exfoliate my skin, but it didn't feel as bad as I had imagined. It actually felt pretty nice. After my entire epidermis was removed, he once again dowsed me with hot water. He motioned with the bowl and water trick, but this time I was to lie down on the table of marble in the center of the room. To no surprise, it was extremely hot. Bare skin plus hot wet marble creates a shock to the system. It’s a sensation similar to the body’s instinctual reaction to retract your hand from a hot pan before you can even think to do so. The difference is, this reaction is faced down on a table and a guy has his entire body weight pressed down on you. You can’t move your hand away from the hot pan. You grip it even tighter and pray. Acclimation to this surface came soon and I was back to enjoying the splashing of water. He began rubbing me down with this huge brush the shape of a wicker broom and the touch of coarse horsehair. It was full of soap that smelled really good, and I wondered if it was some sort of special Turkish soap with sheep’s milk and roses and herbs and what not. But, when I leaned my head I saw his bucket of supplies and it seemed to be just a bar of regular soap. More lathering of soap, more splashing of water, I still could not escape from the hotness. I kept telling myself it was part of the experience. Then came the massage. It was obviously no therapeutic massage, but felt pretty good, nonetheless. Lots of pressure mixed with the contortion of limbs in new directions around the slippery marble surface. A solid 10 minutes of this and a firm pat on the back signaled it was over. He walked away with no words. I sat up stunned and puzzled. Should I follow him or not? I followed him around the corner that led to the area of the bath that had the toilets and the exit. We were the only ones left in the bath area when we finished and I had not heard a door close. It appeared the man had vanished. But as I looked around closer, I found through the bottom slit of the toilet stall two hairy feet and the tips of two hairy ass cheeks. Mother Lamb was taking a post-session deuce. I stood there soaking wet in my towel and flops, waiting for the man to finish. Once he did, he walked over and motioned for me to take off the wet towel, so I did. He wrapped a fresh dry towel around my waist, then one around my shoulders, and then one around my head. I felt bizarre. I then walked back to the lobby to greet my audience. Three of the same old-fat-Turkish guys were sitting there, and as I walked out they continued to stare at me. I stared at them. This stare down was taking a toll. A few moments more of trading blank stares and I walked back to my Red Light District window, changed back into my clothes, paid the guy, and then walked out still confused as to what just happened. Outside feeling refreshed, cool, and the cleanest I've ever felt in my life, I stopped and just giggled out loud to myself. No time to reflect on what had just happened. That was for after the trip. *** Hungry, I walked around the streets and found a place to eat. I saw a German couple sitting at a table outside and ordered what they were having. It looked basically like a burrito. It had sliced lamb meat, pieces of cheese, a pickle spear, tomatoes, topped with french fries and wrapped in a thin flat-bread. It was tasty and would be a nice meal that picky eaters would enjoy. I figured it was best to slowly work my way into the Turkish food. I finished and took my time to walked back to the hotel. It was now well into the afternoon and Tom was still asleep, so I gingerly woke him up. While he took a shower and got ready, I found a computer for guests next to the concierge desk and checked my email. It took a few times of hitting the wrong keys to get used to the Turkish keyboard. The keys were arranged in the same general area as a normal American QWERTY keyboard, but since the Turkish alphabet has 29 letters, the keyboard had been rearranged to fit all 29 letters. Tom finished getting ready and we met in the lobby. We plotted course back to the Grand Bazaar. I showed Tom around like an experienced tour guide as best I could, but we became lost again amidst all the walkways inside. We shopped for a while and decided to get something to eat. We settled on this place right outside. We had a pide( a Turkish version of a pizza) and a cumber, tomato, and cheese sandwich topped off with some desserts. After our meal, we walked back through the area I thought I was in earlier, but as I kept cutting across streets trying to make it back towards the main mosques in the Old City, we came out right on the edge of the water and really close to the fish market, evident by the smell. My Eagle Scout senses were failing me. I had lost my bearings in this place. The fish market was a lively place. Perpendicular to the line of vendors was the Galata Bridge that spanned the body of water known as the Golden Horn. Hundreds of fishermen stood on the bridge and cast their lines for these tiny fish to eat themselves or to sell to one of the many restaurants built underneath the bridge. We walked underneath the bridge where all the restaurants were. Why you would choose to sit and smell disgusting fish while you eat disgusting fish is beyond. From bait to plate, I guess. “Fresh” When we made it across bridge we quickly realized that this side of the water was a lot more grungy and didn't seem as interesting, so we headed back. On the way, we saw a guy on the side of the bridge selling what looked to be stolen cell phones displayed on a cardboard box. Tom and I looked at each other and just laughed. We caught the Tram and rode it back up to the Blue Mosque and stopped at a nearby alleyway bar. I had tea and Tom had a beer. As we sat there, it finally hit me how tired I was. This was day number two of our trip, but it had really been close to 60 hours since we departed Huntsville. Add the jetlag of flying across the globe and it became increasingly difficult to stay engaged in the conversation with Tom. I felt my eyes getting heavy. The excitement of being a new country and in a new continent kept me going.   We finished our drinks and Tom decided he was hungry again. We stopped at this cafeteria-style restaurant and ordered some dishes. I ordered rice and this chicken dish that looked like a burrito covered in cheese. It’s reassuring to learn that burrito-shaped foods are universal across the world. More simply, regardless of what culture or cuisine, if it’s wrapped in bread and covered in cheese, it's got to be a good choice. Tom ordered grape leaves, a bean dish and a strange looking lamb dish. This was definitely beginning to venture into the side of Turkish cuisine that would wig the normal American out. Full bellies, sore feet, extremely clean skin and past the point of exhaustion, we walked back to the hotel, showered, and crashed hard. I promised myself I better write this down.
