On April 15, 1817, the Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons opened with seven pupils in Hartford. The institution, later renamed The American School for the Deaf, was the first American school dedicated exclusively to the education of the deaf. The Connecticut General Assembly granted a charter for the school in 1816 through the persistent efforts of Dr. Mason Fitch Cogswell, who had a deaf daughter, and Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet.

He was vice-chair of the Environment, Emergency Management, and Utilities Committee and was a member of the Transportation Committee. He was an alternate member of the Energy & Technology Committee. He was strongly identified with Rainier Valley, one of Seattle’s poorer neighborhoods. Tổng thống Mỹ vĩ đại nhất lịch sử và những bài học giá trị về đạo đức cao quý

Trong vai trò Tổng thống, Abraham Lincoln được vinh danh là Người giải phóng vĩ đại, thành công trong nỗ lực lãnh đạo Hoa Kỳ vượt qua giai đoạn đen tối nhất trong lịch sử. Từ một người làm thuê trở thành luật sư, rồi nghị sĩ và tổng thống quyền lực, tái thiết đất nước sau những chia rẽ, những phẩm chất đáng quý nào đã giúp Lincoln trở thành một huyền thoại?

Tổng thống Abraham Lincoln đã có một câu nói để đời rằng: “Ta có thể luôn luôn lừa dối một số người, và thỉnh thoảng lừa dối tất cả mọi người, nhưng ta không thể nào lừa dối mọi người mãi mãi”.Người dân Mỹ đều biết tới “Honest Abe” (Abe trung thực) – một tên gọi khác của vị thống thống thứ 16 của Hoa Kỳ. Câu chuyện đầu tiên là từ khi ông còn làm việc trong cửa hàng ở New Salem, bang Illinois. Họ nói rằng, bất cứ khi nào ông nhận ra mình đã trả thiếu tiền cho khách dù chỉ là mấy đồng xu rất nhỏ, ông cũng sẽ đóng cửa hàng và đi trả lại đúng cho người mua, bất kể là phải đi bộ bao xa.Mọi người nhận ra đức tính trung thực của ông và sớm yêu cầu ông giữ vị trí như một thẩm phán hay hoà giải viên trong các vụ tranh luận hay cãi vã khác nhau trong hạt. Theo Robert Rutledge của New Salem: “Phán quyết của Lincoln luôn là phán quyết cuối cùng ở hạt. Người dân hoàn toàn tin tưởng vào sự trung thực, liêm chính và vô tư của ông”.

Là một thành viên của cơ quan lập pháp Illinois và sau đó trong quá trình hành nghề luật sư, tiếng tăm về sự lương thiện và công bằng đã giúp ông mở rộng phạm vi ảnh hưởng để giành được bốn nhiệm kỳ liên tiếp trong cơ quan lập pháp. Lincoln nhanh chóng chuyển đến Springfield và bắt đầu hành nghề luật sư, một nghề mà ông thừa nhận rằng luôn bị ác cảm: “Luật sư là không trung thực”. Có lần, ở giữa tòa, ông nghe luật sư bên kia đưa ra những chứng cớ chắc chắn rằng thân chủ mà ông bào chữa đã gian trá, ông bèn bước ra khỏi phòng. Viên thẩm phán cho người gọi ông, ông không vào mà chỉ nhắn lại rằng: “Tôi phải đi rửa tay vì tôi đã vô tình nhúng tay vào một vụ dơ dáy”.

Lincoln coi trọng sự chân thật, trung thực không chỉ trong giao dịch pháp lý của mình với khách hàng mà còn với những mối quan hệ cá nhân của mình. Lincoln đã từng viết: “Tôi muốn trong mọi trường hợp phải làm đúng, và đặc biệt nhất trong mọi trường hợp với phụ nữ”. Đây là một nguyên tắc mà ông chưa hề vi phạm trong suốt cuộc đời của mình. Ngày nay, các sử gia cho biết rằng không có một câu chuyện đáng tin cậy nào về việc Lincoln không chung thuỷ với vợ mình.Mục sư Albert Hale đã nói về vị tổng thống vĩ đại nhất Hoa Kỳ như thế này: “…tôi chưa bao giờ nghe thấy ai kể cả một kẻ thù nào tố cáo ông ấy về sự gian dối hoặc tham nhũng”.Kể cả đối thủ cạnh tranh trong các phòng xử án và trong cuộc chạy đua vào Thượng viện là Douglas cũng phải công nhận khi được hỏi về chiến thắng của Lincoln: “Bạn đã đề cử một người đàn ông rất có khả năng và rất trung thực”.Một trong những người bạn thân nhất của Lincoln, ông Leonard Swett, đã tiết lộ về con người ông rằng: “Ông ấy tin vào Pháp lý vĩ đại về sự chân thật, sự thực thi và trách nhiệm giải trình của mình trước Thiên Chúa, về việc sự thật sẽ luôn chiến thắng và dối trá sẽ luôn bị lật đổ”.

Abraham Lincoln được các thế hệ sau vinh danh là người giải phóng vĩ đại, xóa bỏ chế độ nô lệ phi đạo đức và thực hiện hòa giải dân tộc thành công một cách không tưởng bằng sự bao dung rộng lớn của mình. Sau này có những ý kiến cho rằng, bản chất của cuộc nội chiến Hoa Kỳ không phải là vấn đề sở hữu nô lệ, và bản thân Lincoln cũng không phải muốn xóa bỏ chế độ này mà chỉ nhằm mục đích duy nhất là thống nhất đất nước mà thôi. Nhưng trong một bức thư gửi cho người bạn cũ là Joshua Speed, bộc bạch với người bạn, Lincoln viết:

“Theo tôi thì sự suy đồi của chúng ta phát triển khá nhanh. Trong vài trò là một quốc gia, chúng ta bắt đầu bằng việc tuyên bố ‘Tất cả mọi người đều được sinh ra với quyền bình đẳng’. Nhưng bây giờ trên thực tế chúng ta lại chủ trương rằng ‘Tất cả mọi người đều được sinh ra với quyền bình đẳng ngoại trừ người da đen, người nước ngoài và người Công giáo’”.Lòng trắc ẩn của ông đối với thân phận người nô lệ da đen khởi lên từ khi ông còn đang đi làm mướn cày quốc, đốn củi cho các chủ trại. Một lần xuống New Orleans, ông đã chứng kiến đời sống tủi nhục của những người nô lệ. Ông thấy người da đen bị xích lại với nhau và bị quất bằng roi da đến ứa máu. Những cô gái da đen chạy nhảy, leo trèo để người mua xem xét khả năng lao động của họ. Người ta vạch miệng vạch tai họ để coi rồi trả giá y như trả giá những con bò, con ngựa. Trước cảnh đó, Lincoln phẫn uất quay mặt đi, bảo các bạn mình rằng: “Ngó làm gì nữa các anh. Thực nhục nhã cho loài người”.

Lincoln đã nhắc lại những điều ghi trong Bản Tuyên Ngôn Độc Lập để công kích tính chất bất công của chế độ nô lệ: “Không ai đủ tốt để có thể thống trị người khác mà không có sự ưng thuận của người ấy. Tôi cho rằng đây là nguyên tắc chủ đạo – chỗ dựa chính của chủ nghĩa cộng hòa Hoa Kỳ… Khi người da trắng thống trị người da trắng thì đó là chính phủ tự trị, nhưng khi người da trắng thống trị sắc dân khác thì đó không còn là chính phủ tự trị mà là chính phủ chuyên chế. Nếu người da đen không phải là con người, thế thì tại sao niềm tin cổ xưa của tôi lại dạy tôi rằng ‘tất cả mọi người đều được sinh ra với quyền bình đẳng’, và rằng sẽ là phi đạo đức khi một người lại biến một người khác thành nô lệ”.

Không chỉ yêu thương con người và chiến đấu vì quyền được sống của những người nô lệ, Lincoln cũng nổi tiếng là người yêu động vật. Ở Nhà Trắng, ông có một chú mèo tên Tabby và một chú chó tên Fido. Chú mèo thậm chí được chủ cho ăn cùng tại bàn ăn với chủ ở Nhà Trắng. Lincoln không ngần ngại thể hiện quan điểm của mình: “Tôi tán đồng rằng, động vật cũng có quyền lợi, giống như quyền lợi của con người mà Thượng thiên ban cho. Đây mới là đạo mở rộng lòng nhân ái”.

Khi thương lượng với các nhà lãnh đạo chính trị của miền Nam, ông đã rất thất vọng khi họ nhất quyết đặt lợi ích của các tiểu bang lên trên quyền lợi của liên bang. Cả quá trình tìm kiếm sự hòa giải và thống nhất dân tộc của mình, Lincoln luôn đặt lợi ích chung của người dân lên hàng đầu và đó là thể hiện đầu tiên của cái Thiện: nghĩ tới người khác trước.Và khi quân miền Nam đã rơi vào thế bại trận thì đột nhiên Tổng thống Abraham Lincoln muốn được đàm phán. Cách làm này của ông lúc bấy giờ đã khiến cho một vị đồng sự bất mãn. Ông ấy giận dữ, đập tay xuống bàn và nói: “Quân địch nhất định phải bị tiêu diệt!”. Tổng thống Lincoln vẫn giữ vẻ ôn hòa, nói: “Khi họ trở thành bạn của chúng ta, thì chẳng phải là kẻ địch đã bị tiêu diệt rồi sao?”

Sau cuộc nội chiến, các tướng sĩ quân đội phía Nam sau khi đầu hàng, mỗi người đều nhận được một văn kiện của quân đội liên bang, cam kết đảm bảo rằng từ đó về sau họ không bị làm phiền. Và Tổng thống Lincoln cũng kết thúc những xung đột giữa hai miền bằng một câu nói cao thượng: “Nội chiến không có người thắng!”, mặc dù lúc đó phe miền Nam rõ ràng đã thua cuộc.

Sau đó, sự nhân ái của ông còn thể hiện qua khẳng định cái nhìn về tương lai của Hoa Kỳ: “Với việc không hận thù ai với đức bác ái dành cho mọi người, với sự kiên quyết trong lẽ phải vì Thiên Chúa cho chúng ta nhìn thấy lẽ phải, chúng ta hãy cùng cố gắng hoàn tất công việc mà chúng ta đang làm để hàn gắn những tổn thương của quốc gia, để quan tâm đến những người phải chiến đấu, để chăm sóc người vợ góa bụa và những đứa con mồ côi cha của họ, để làm tất cả những gì có thể giành được và duy trì một nền hòa bình công bằng và lâu dài giữa chúng ta và với mọi quốc gia”.

Abraham Lincoln đã đi vào lịch sử nước Mỹ không chỉ vì tài năng chính trị mà còn bởi nhân cách cao thượng hiếm có. Xuất thân có phần thấp hèn, lại không có được sự nghiệp chính trị ấn tượng, tuy nhiên năm 1860 ông bất ngờ đắc cử tổng thống. Tất nhiên, việc này đã vấp phải những chỉ trích dữ dội. Các đối thủ thường buông lời dè bỉu và gọi ông là “gã nông dân”. Các nghị sĩ Hoa Kỳ thời đó đều xuất thân từ danh gia vọng tộc, thuộc giới thượng lưu trong xã hội. Việc con trai một người đóng giày như Lincoln đột nhiên ngồi chễm chệ trên chiếc ghế quyền lực cao nhất khiến họ không cam lòng.Ngay trong ngày đầu tiên nhậm chức, Lincoln đã phải đối diện với thử thách mà đối với nhiều người có thể gọi là chấn động nhân tâm. Trong khi ông đang đọc diễn văn nhậm chức, một nghị sĩ đứng dậy ngắt lời: “Thưa ngài, xin hãy nhớ rằng cha ngài đã từng đóng giày cho cả nhà tôi”. Tất cả cười ồ lên sảng khoái.Thế nhưng Lincoln vẫn bình tĩnh, ngừng bài diễn văn của mình và tự tin đáp trả: “Tôi biết cha mình đã từng đóng giày cho cả gia đình ngài cũng như nhiều nghị sĩ khác. Bởi lẽ không người thợ nào có thể làm tốt như ông. Xin hỏi đã có ai trong các ngài phàn nàn về những đôi giày mà cha tôi đóng hay chưa? Chính tôi cũng biết đóng giày, nếu muốn tôi cũng có thể đóng cho các ngài một đôi. Nhưng dù sao đi nữa, tôi cũng vô cùng tự hào về người cha của mình, một người thợ giày xuất sắc”.

Các nghị sĩ nghe xong đều im bặt. Họ đã công kích Lincoln bằng những thứ lời lẽ dè bỉu cay nghiệt nhất, nhưng ông ấy đã đáp lại bằng một sự bao dung to lớn thể hiện sự điềm tĩnh vĩ đại của một người quân tử. Sau đó, có người khuyên Lincoln trả đũa tay nghị sĩ nọ. Nhưng ông mau chóng gạt đi và nói: “Khi tất cả chúng ta trở thành bằng hữu thì sẽ không còn bất cứ kẻ thù nào”.Người quân tử nếu sống vì chút khẩu khí thì sẽ không tránh khỏi lụy phiền, bất mãn mà hỏng đại sự. Muốn thành việc lớn hay việc nhỏ thì cũng đều cần có đại khí. Mà người có đại khí ắt là phải có tâm Đại Nhẫn.Những người biết Lincoln đều mô tả ông là người điềm đạm và rất bình tĩnh. Cuộc đời ông là những thảm kịch nối tiếp nhau, mẹ mất khi ông mới 9 tuổi, chị chết khi ông 13 tuổi, tình yêu đầu cũng ra đi khi ông 20 tuổi, hai cậu con trai chết trẻ và nỗi đau mất con càng khiến người vợ cục cằn của ông hóa điên dại và trút hết lên đầu Lincoln. Bà Mary Todd, vợ ông là người thuộc tầng lớp thượng lưu và luôn phàn nàn thậm chí sỉ nhục tác phong mà bà cho là thấp kém của Lincoln. Có lúc Mary còn ném thẳng cốc nước vào mặt chồng mình giữa bao nhiêu quan khách trong một bữa tiệc nhưng ông không nói gì mà chỉ ngồi im. Mary cũng thường chán nản trước những việc vặt như nấu ăn, dọn dẹp và chăm sóc con cái. Dù rất bận với công việc luật sư và sau này là ở cương vị tổng thống, nhưng Lincoln vẫn không bao giờ phàn nàn vợ mà chỉ nhắc nhở bà một cách hài hước và sẵn lòng giúp đỡ Mary chăm con khi có thời gian. Người ta chưa bao giờ có bằng chứng nào về việc Lincoln ngoại tình hay quát tháo, to tiếng với Mary, mặc dù họ cũng hiểu kiểu phụ nữ như Mary đáng sợ đến mức nào.Thời nay, nếu người đàn ông nhẫn chịu như vậy sẽ bị coi là đớn hèn, nhu nhược, nhưng đó lại là cảnh giới cao nhất của ý chí kiên cường. Dùng tâm hòa ái để đối đãi với sự bất công, chứ không phải là trốn tránh hay đè nén tâm can khi đối diện.

Tâm Đại Nhẫn của Lincoln cũng thể hiện rất rõ trong sự nghiệp chính trị ngắn ngủi nhưng huy hoàng của mình. Tâm trí ông luôn cân nhắc “Làm thế nào để có thể hòa hợp những yếu tố không hòa hợp với nhau?”. Nếu là một người đố kỵ, ganh ghét, tự phụ thì hẳn là ông đã không thể dùy trì được sự đoàn kết và hòa hợp cho cả dân tộc. Nhưng sự khiêm nhường của Lincoln, chính là thể hiện một phần của chữ Nhẫn, biết cúi mình, dẹp bỏ cái tôi để nghĩ cho đại sự.Ông đã từng nói với một người bạn thân: “Tôi tin chắc rằng nếu tôi rời nơi này (Washington D.C) mà tôi không trở thành một người khôn ngoan hơn thì tôi sẽ trở thành một người tốt hơn, vì tôi đã biết được là tôi kém cỏi đến mức nào khi ở đây”. Đây là sự khác biệt lớn của Lincoln so với các chính trị gia cùng thời và thậm chí là nhiều chính trị gia sau này. Sự tự ý thức và tĩnh khí của ông cho phép ông kiềm chế tính tự cao tự đại và kiên định vào mục tiêu chung của dân tộc.Như Michael Burlingame đã từng viết về vị tổng thống vĩ đại: “Khả năng vượt trên cái tôi của Lincoln, như đã được biểu lộ trong việc ông tự chế giễu và qua nhiều cách khác, không chỉ là bí quyết giúp ông thành công trong vai trò là người lãnh đạo cuộc chiến, mà nó còn hình thành một phần của di sản quý giá mà ông để lại cho nước Mỹ. Ông là một tấm gương hoàn thiện, kiên định và chín chắn về tâm lý cho người Mỹ và toàn thể nhân loại noi theo”.Bởi cả cuộc đời mình, Lincoln kiên định với lý tưởng và những giá trị đạo đức cao quý vĩnh hằng, nên ông luôn sẵn sàng đứng trước Đấng tối cao của mình mà không phải hổ thẹn, hơn nữa còn đem lại những thành tựu vĩ đại cho nước Mỹ và để lại những di sản về nhân phẩm đầy giá trị cho hậu thế.
