The Colorado Mineral Belt The area of Colorado, running from Denver and Boulder heading southwest, is a geologic puzzle. It is loaded with economic ore deposits, and has been a key mining target for nearly 2 centuries. Why all these ore deposits sit here is something of a geologic enigma, and in fact it has even left its mark on the state's map. Denver, Colorado sits very near the northeastern end of the line of mines and the Geological Society of America (GSA) even houses its headquarters nearby in Boulder, Colorado. Why does Colorado host enough mineral mines to redraw their map? The answer is the Colorado Mineral Belt.
The Colorado Mineral Belt is a belt of igneous rocks deposited between about 75 and 33 million years ago that runs from the Four Corners region in Arizona northeast to the Rocky Mountain front range just west of Denver, as shown in this map. These igneous rocks mostly formed as plutons of felsic rock – blobs of magma with compositions close to granite – that moved up through the crust and deposited ore bodies as they crystallized. Some of the highest peaks in Colorado are made from magmas formed during the growth of the Mineral Belt. This pulse of magmatism literally made fortunes; one database below shows over 8000 separate mines in Colorado. Once the first mining pulse began in the Denver area, mining spread throughout the Mineral Belt. Supplies came in through Denver and spread out to dozens of mining boomtowns and smelters throughout this region. Although its importance to geology is such that the GSA literally sits right there…there is still debate about the origin of the Colorado Mineral Belt. In fact, based on the big picture events in the Western United States over the past 100 million years, it really shouldn’t be there. 100 million years ago, a piece of oceanic crust called the Farallon plate was subducting beneath North America. As it subducted, it gave off fluids that caused the mantle to melt, eventually creating large igneous mountain ranges such as the Sierra Nevada and the Idaho Batholith. However, about 80 million years ago, something changed. Although the Farallon plate continued subducting, the volcanoes shut off across half the continent. Subduction usually triggers volcanoes, so a 1000+ kilometer gap above a subduction zone with no volcanoes is extremely unusual. Most geologists believe this volcanic shutoff relates to the path the Farallon plate took as it subducted. For igneous rocks to form, a plate must sink far enough into the mantle to reach hot rocks – typically at a depth of about 100 kilometers. If the plate was too light, it wouldn’t sink and the volcanoes would shut off. This volcanic shutoff is also associated with the Laramide Orogeny – a unique period of faulting in the Western U.S. where deeply buried basement rocks are suddenly thrust upwards into mountains. This whole scenario makes sense if the Farallon slab got too shallow – the volcanoes shut off and the Laramide faults formed because the Farallon plate was pushing upwards on the bottom of the continent. No volcanoes, deeply rooted faults pushed almost straight up. Right in the middle of this general picture is the oddity of the Colorado Mineral Belt. It sits right in the middle of this volcanic gap, nowhere near any spot that was producing volcanoes over the subduction zone, in an area where there shouldn’t be any volcanism, and yet a 500 kilometer long volcanic province suddenly appeared. The Colorado Mineral Belt owes its origin in part to this subduction process, but how it happened is still a matter for debate. The Farallon slab became shallow and extended deep into the continent, supplying fluids into areas of North America that hadn’t seen them before. These fluids were concentrated in the area of the Colorado Mineral Belt and produced magmas rich in gold and other trace elements that they then brought up to the surface. But why right here? Part of the answer may be extremely ancient. The North American continent assembled over several billion years as different pieces of crust stuck to the continent. Every one of these collisions was violent, creating mountain ranges and a series of faults that cut through the entire length of the crust. Geologic mapping indicates that there are several ancient, Precambrian aged faults in this region, a relic of a collision on the growing North American continent 1.6 to 1.8 billion years ago. These faults could penetrate the entire crust and provide pathways that could carry the mineral belt fluids and magmas up to the surface. An alternative idea was published in recent years arguing instead that the old faults play only a minor role in shaping the Mineral Belt. Instead, that scientist proposed that the reason the mineral belt is so long is that it is the remnant of a fracture in the Farallon plate. If the Farallon plate tore in two as it moved beneath North America, that tear would allow hot mantle and fluids to rise up in-between the two pieces of the plate and would create a line of igneous rocks tracing out the relative motion path between the two plates. The Colorado Mineral Belt is a unique feature in the Western U.S. and maybe even around the world. Although there are gold and mineral deposits elsewhere, this strange lineament right in the middle of a magmatic gap represents an amazing accumulation of mineral wealth. -JBB Image credit: http://bit.ly/1PkLquE. Durango, CO (No. 2)
The D&RG(W) and the Rio Grande Southern Railroad were vital resources to many places including Durango before the major introduction of the automobile, helping transport goods such as produce and mineral traffic in and out of the Southwestern Colorado area, and along with other businesses such as the Durango Smelter, immensely supporting the town's economy. However, the Great Depression and aftermath of World War II hurt the area's railroad industry. The Rio Grande Southern lost its contract to transport mail in 1951, and soon thereafter suspended operations. The D&RGW also ended their San Juan Express passenger service from Durango to Alamosa. However, the natural scenery along their Silverton Branch had been recognized as a major tourist attraction. In turn, the D&RGW introduced the major tourism industry into the Durango area, transporting visitors up to Silverton and back and attracting Hollywood into La Plata County for a time. Once the D&RGW ended up losing its freight traffic in 1968, the tracks from Durango east to Chama, New Mexico, and south to Farmington, New Mexico were removed, but the Silverton Branch remained in operation until 1981 when it was sold and became the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.

In this episode: .The FAQ is: What is the best way to test out the van life for me?
Today’s Destination : Durango Part 1
Today’s Mistake- Toll Booth mishap
Travel Advice:  Tell a joke to someone you meet
In this episode: FAQ What is the best way to test out van life for me? My friend Victoria is testing out vans for a possible retirement.
Answer:
If you want to retire and live in a van, I encourage you to practice with some friends who already do this kind of travel. Ask them to set you up with a trip and help you navigate the way to become a van life person. You need to tell them about your experience if you have any, or not. Be frank and clear on your expectations and your needs.
Then when it comes to getting the van, they will be on board, and you will be able to learn from them what this takes. It’s about the experience. You will find several reasons to go and others NOT to join the van life experience, but you’ll never know if you like it until you try it out yourself. The show notes have a link to the not so pretty side of van life. This person would rather stay in a fancy hotel, so be warned. Not everyone wants the van life.

  Destination: Durango Part 1
There’s a new Pedestrian bridge in Durango. That’s a big deal for the locals, like my friends Deb and Ken, who live here. . It’s a small town in the southern and western part of Colorado. I drove there from Phoenix this spring. When asked if they had a lot of snow, the answer was:
“I used my snow blowers 4 x last winter” so no.
Locals will discuss that the Mining industry is big
The Smelter  processes ore from Silverton.
The history includes facts like “The Town Marshall got gunned down in town.”
For a more recent history, I learned about a neighborhood called Tupperware Heights, built in the 50’s
I had the experience of Yoga Durango, Flying Fish open on Fridays, driving the Loop around Fort Lewis College and seeing Activities: ski hill and skate rink
There are plenty of Cyclists, which is why Orthopedic surgeons do very well here because of these sports enthusiasts

Today’s Travel Advice: Tell a joke to someone you like
When you travel solo, you meet a lot of people that you may never see again. Try telling a joke to a person you meet and make them smile. That will make their day, too. The show notes have a list of clean adult jokes you can find easily. Here’s one: What do dentists call their x rays? Tooth Pics.

DON’T STOP THREE FEET FROM GOLD! - One of the most common causes of failure is the habit of quitting when one is overtaken by temporary defeat. Every person is guilty of this mistake at one time or another. ~story below~ - A man struck with gold fever in the gold-rush days finds himself out west in hopes to dig and grow rich. He had never heard that more gold has been mined from the brains of men than has ever been taken from the earth. - After weeks of labor, he was rewarded by the discovery of the shining ore. He needed machinery to bring the ore to the surface. Quietly, he covered up the mine, retraced his footsteps to his home, got together money for the needed machinery and had it shipped. - The first car of ore was mined, and shipped to a smelter. The returns proved they had one of the richest mines in Colorado! A few more cars of that ore would clear the debts. Then would come the big killing in profits. - Down went the drills! Up went his hopes! Then something happened! The vein of #gold ore disappeared! They had come to the end of the rainbow, and the pot of gold was no longer there! They drilled on, desperately trying to pick up the vein again...all to no avail. - Finally, he decided to QUIT. 🙅‍♂️ - He sold the machinery to a junk man for a few hundred dollars, and took the train back home. Some “junk” men are dumb, but not this one! He called in a mining engineer to look at the mine and do a little calculating. The engineer advised that the project had failed, because the owners were not familiar with “fault lines.” His calculations showed that the vein would be found just three feet from where the drilling had stopped! That is exactly where it was found! - The “Junk” man took millions of dollars in ore from the mine, because he knew enough to seek expert counsel before giving up. - Before success comes in any man’s life, he is sure to meet with much temporary defeat, and, perhaps, some failure. When defeat overtakes a man, the easiest and most logical thing to do is to quit. That is exactly what the majority of men do. - *Moral of the story.* DO NOT STOP THREE FEET OF GOLD! Working Smart to work less, Rally Traders is here to help! 👊 #success (at Winners Never Quit) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJkjx-fhmrs/?igshid=1u60wwkhwv1d8

Colorado & Southern’s Globeville Branch snaked through Denver to serve the historic Globe Smelter and the city’s extensive stock yards, both of which in January, 1959, still provided enough traffic to call out a daily switch run with caboose. The 629 is a 1906 product of Alco’s Brooks works, one of a handful of B-4R 2-8-0s that C&S will keep busy for a few more months. Follow@worldofadulation Failure is a trickster with a keen sense of irony. It takes great delight in tripping one when success is almost within reach. Three feet from gold: An uncle of R. U. The Copper King Mansion, W.A. Clark Mansion, In Butte Montana
Tumblr media
The W.A. Clark Mansion also known as the Copper King Mansion is one of the most recognized and beautiful buildings in the state of Montana. Built during the years 1884 to 1888, it figures prominently in the history of Butte, as Montana was becoming a state. It was the residence of the famous William Andrews Clark ,one of the three famous Copper Kings of the state. It is the 28th stop in the travel series Off The Beaten Path.
The W.A. Clark Mansion was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. As the home of one of the three copper mining barons of the state, the residence played a role in the development of the regions economy.
Tumblr media
The Copper King Mansion did undergo restoration work in 2012.
The mansion consists of 34 rooms and was built in the Romanesque Revival Style, that had become quite popular in the Gilded Age. The building contains fresco painted ceilings, stained glass windows by Tiffany and ornamented hand carved fireplaces.
There are ornately designed parquets of rare imported wood and elegant gilded staircases. One can find both gas and electric chandeliers in abundance, throughout the mansion. Clark did incorporate the most modern household inventions, that were available at the time.
Tumblr media
Stained glass,& grand staircase.
Construction came under the direction of D.T. McDevitt. The woodwork was the responsibility of W.F. Beall & Co. from Chicago. There are numerous panels of bird's-eye maple, Cuban mahogany, fine oak, rosewood and sycamore.
Plaster was painted with swirls of gold in the entryway, bronze in the octagonal reception room, silver in the dining room and copper in the billiard room.
The mansion is elaborately furnished with period antiques and furniture, with colorful oriental rugs.
The embellishments and many of the materials for the mansion were all imported at an enormous cost of $200,000 USD (United States Dollar). This would be the equivalent of $5 million USD today.
William Andrews Clark supervised every detail in the building of his red-brick Victorian mansion.
As one of the wealthiest men in Montana, William Andrews Clark built the mansion as a symbol of his wealth and power within the community. He and two other fellow industrialists, Augustus Heinze and Marcus Daly, were in a bitter ongoing competition, for control of the regions rich copper resources.
Tumblr media
William Andrews Clark
Clark supposedly was born in a log house in the state of Pennsylvania during the spring of 1839. The family would later move to Iowa in 1856.
In 1862, during the American Civil War, he traveled further west to become a miner. After working in the quartz mines in Colorado, he proceeded north the following year. He had been tempted to participate in the Montana Gold Rush.
Settling in the capital of the territory, his gold claim only paid moderate returns. Clark invested those in becoming a trader. He hired mules to move supplies between the booming mining communities of Montana and the city of Las Vegas.
Within a short time he would change his vocation, and would become a banker in Deer Lodge Montana. He began to repossess mining properties, when owners defaulted on their loans. Clark over time, became a major power in the Montana mining industry.
Tumblr media
W. A. Clark buying a newspaper, circa 1906.
As the years passed, Clark amassed a fortune in mining, small smelters, electric power companies, newspapers and railroads.
As part of his transportation empire, he bought and then developed a watering stop that would grow into the city of Las Vegas. The surrounding jurisdiction, was fittingly named Clark County.
He is also largely responsible for the selection of Helena, as the political capital of Montana.
William Andrews Clark could now dream about a future in politics. He served as president of both Montana state constitutional conventions in 1884 and 1889.
His dream of becoming a United States Senator was first realized in 1899, but resulted in a massive scandal. It was later revealed he had actually bribed members of the Montana State Legislature, so they would cast a vote for him.
Tumblr media
Political cartoon depicting Clark bribing state legislators, October 1900
At the time, United States Senators were chosen by their respective state legislatures. The obvious corruption of this election and a number of others would soon change history, with the later passage of the 17th Amendment. Henceforth, Senators would be voted for by popular vote.
Since the other Senators refuse to seat Clark, he was forced from office, the following year. It was a major setback for Clark. He is reported to have said in response to the scandal, I never bought a man who wasn't for sale.
After three more bitter campaigns for the Senate he was at last successful, and was able to serve one term from 1901 to 1907.
At the time of his death in 1925, at the age of 86, Clark had amassed a fortune of between $150 to $300 million. At just $200 million, it is the equivalent of close to $2.9 billion in the currency of today. This made him one of the wealthiest Americans, to have ever lived.

The mansion that he had built in New York City, sited directly across from Central Park on 5th Avenue, is considered by architectural historians, as the most expensive private home ever constructed in the city. Unfortunately, this fabulous residence would be demolished in 1927.
His other residence, the Copper King Mansion came into possession of the Cote family in 1953. Privately owned, the mansion now serves as a bed and breakfast, operated by the Cote clan.
The 5 rooms and suites available for lodging are elaborately decorated with period antiques, oriental rugs and rather dark woodwork. 3 rooms share a bathroom and the 2 suites feature sitting areas and private facilities with claw foot tubs.

His dream of becoming a United States Senator was first realized in 1899, but resulted in a massive scandal. It was later revealed he had actually bribed members of the Montana State Legislature, so they would cast a vote for him.
He is reported to have said in response to the scandal, I never bought a man who wasn’t for sale.
W. A. Clark Mansion in New York City.

Charley Pride
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Charley Frank Pride (born March 18, 1934) is an American country music singer, musician/guitarist, recording artist, performer and business owner. His greatest musical success came in the early- to mid-1970s, when he became the best-selling performer for RCA Records since Elvis Presley. During the peak years of his recording career (1966–87), he garnered 52 top-10 hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, 29 of which made it to number one. He has appeared with country music star Brad Paisley and was featured in the 2016 CMA Awards.
Pride is one of the few African Americans to have had considerable success in the country music industry and one of only three (along with DeFord Bailey and Darius Rucker) to have been inducted as a member of the Grand Ole Opry. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000.
In 2010, Pride became a special investor and minority owner of the Texas Rangers Major League Baseball club.
Early life and career
Pride was born in Sledge, Mississippi, one of 11 children of poor sharecroppers. His father intended to name him Charl Frank Pride, but owing to a clerical error on his birth certificate, his legal name is Charley Frank Pride. Eight boys and three girls were in the family. He married Rozene Cohan in 1956.
When Pride was 14, his mother purchased him his first guitar and he taught himself to play. Though he also loved music, one of Pride's lifelong dreams was to become a professional baseball player. In 1952, he pitched for the Memphis Red Sox of the Negro American League. He pitched well, and in 1953, he signed a contract with the Boise Yankees, the Class C farm team of the New York Yankees. During that season, an injury caused him to lose the "mustard" on his fastball, and he was sent to the Yankees' Class D team in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Later that season, while in the Negro leagues with the Louisville Clippers, another player (Jesse Mitchell) and he were traded to the Birmingham Black Barons for a team bus. "Jesse and I may have the distinction of being the only players in history to be traded for a used motor vehicle," Pride mused in his 1994 autobiography.
He pitched for several other minor league teams, his hopes of making it to the big leagues still alive, but the Army derailed this. After serving two years in the military, he tried to return to baseball. Though hindered by an injury to his throwing arm, Pride played three games for the Missoula Timberjacks of the Pioneer League (a farm club of the Cincinnati Reds) in 1960, and had tryouts with the California Angels (1961) and the New York Mets (1962) organizations, but was not picked up by either team.
When he was laid off by the Timberjacks, he moved to work construction in Helena, Montana, in 1960. He was recruited to pitch for the local semipro baseball team, the East Helena Smelterites, and the team manager helped him get a job at the local Asarco lead smelter. The lead smelter kept 18 jobs open specifically for baseball players, and arranged their shifts so they could play as a team. Pride batted a .444 his first year.
Pride's singing ability soon came to the attention of the team manager, who also paid him to sing for 15 minutes before each game, which increased attendance and earned Pride another $10 on top of the $10 he earned for each game. He also played gigs in the local area, both solo and with a band called the Night Hawks, and Asarco asked him to sing at company picnics. His job at the smelter was dangerous and difficult. He once broke his ankle, and routinely unloaded coal from railroad cars and shoveled it into a 2,400° F furnace, which he also had to keep clear of slag, a task which frequently gave him burns. In a 2014 interview, Pride explained, “I would work at the smelter, work the swing shift and then play music,” said Pride. “I’d work 11-7. Drive. Play Friday. Punch in. Drive. Polson. Philipsburg.”
Between his smelter job and his music, he made a good living in the Helena area. He moved his wife and son to join him and they lived in Helena until 1967, purchasing their first home there, and with their children Dion and Angela being born at the local hospital. The Pride family moved to Great Falls, Montana, in 1967, because Pride's music career was taking off and he required quicker access to an airport. The family ultimately left Montana and moved to Texas in 1969. In a 1967 interview with the Helena Independent Record, Rozene commented that the family encountered minor racism in Montana, citing an incident where they were refused service in a restaurant and another time when a realtor refused to show them a home, but she felt that the family endured less racism than she saw leveled against local Native American people, whose treatment she compared to that given to black people in the south. Pride has generally spoken with fondness of the near-decade he spent there. “Montana is a very conservative state...I stood out like a neon. But once they let you in, you become a Montanan. When the rumor was that I was leaving. They kept saying, ‘we will let you in, you can’t leave.’"
On June 5, 2008, Pride and his brother Mack "The Knife" Pride and 28 other living former Negro league players were "drafted" by each of the 30 Major League Baseball teams in a recognition of the on-field achievements and historical relevance of 30 mostly forgotten, Negro-league stars. Pride was picked by the Texas Rangers, with whom he has had a long affiliation, and the Colorado Rockies took his brother.
Rise to music fame
While he was active in baseball, Pride had been encouraged to join the music business by country stars such as Red Sovine and Red Foley, and was working towards this career. In 1958, in Memphis, Pride visited Sun Studios and recorded some songs. One song has survived on tape, and was released in the United Kingdom as part of a box set. The song is a slow stroll in walking tempo called "Walkin' (the Stroll)."
He played music at clubs in Montana solo and with a four-piece combo called the Night Hawks during the time he lived in Montana. His break came when Chet Atkins at RCA Victor heard a demonstration tape and got Pride a contract. In 1966, he released his first RCA Victor single, "The Snakes Crawl at Night" Nashville manager and agent Jack D. Johnson signed Pride. Atkins was the longtime producer at RCA Victor who had made stars out of country singers such as Jim Reeves, Skeeter Davis and others. Pride was signed to RCA Victor in 1965. "The Snakes Crawl at Night", did not chart. On the records of this song submitted to radio stations for airplay, the singer was listed as "Country Charley Pride". At this time, country music was a white medium. Jack made sure that no pictures of Charley were distributed for the first two years of his career, to avoid the effects of Jim Crowism. Pride disputes that the omission of a photo was deliberate; he stated that getting promoters to bring in a black country singer was a bigger problem: "people didn’t care if I was pink. RCA signed me... they knew I was colored...They decided to put the record out and let it speak for itself.” While living in Montana, he continued to sing at local clubs, and in Great Falls had an additional boost to his career when he befriended local businessman Louis Allen “Al” Donohue, who owned radio stations including KMON, the first stations to play Pride's records in Montana.
Soon after the release of "The Snakes Crawl at Night", Pride released another single called "Before I Met You", which also did not chart. Soon after, Pride's third single, "Just Between You and Me", was released. This song was the one that finally brought Pride success on the country charts. The song reached number nine on the US country chart.
Height of his career
The success of "Just Between You and Me" was enormous. He was nominated for a Grammy Award for the song the next year.
In 1967, he became the first black performer to appear at the Grand Ole Opry since harmonica player DeFord Bailey, who was a regular cast member of the Opry from 1925 through 1941, and made a final appearance in 1974. Pride also appeared in 1967 on ABC's The Lawrence Welk Show. In 1975, he was one of the stars of Bob Hope's Stars and Stripes Show emceed by John Davidson and filmed in front of a live audience in Oklahoma City to celebrate the United States Bicentennial.
Between 1969 and 1971, Pride had eight single records that simultaneously reached number one on the US Country Hit Parade and also charted on the Billboard Hot 100: "All I Have to Offer You (Is Me)", "(I'm So) Afraid of Losing You Again", "I Can't Believe That You've Stopped Loving Me", "I'd Rather Love You", "Is Anybody Goin' to San Antone", "Wonder Could I Live There Anymore", "I'm Just Me", and "Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'". The pop success of these songs reflected the country/pop crossover sound that was reaching country music in the 1960s and early 1970s, known as "Countrypolitan". In 1969, his compilation album, The Best of Charley Pride sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. Ultimately, Elvis Presley was the only artist who sold more records for the RCA label than did Pride.
Pride sang the Paul Newman-directed film Sometimes a Great Notion's main soundtrack song "All His Children" in 1970. The film starred Newman and Henry Fonda and received two Oscar nominations in 1972, one being for the song that Pride sang.
"Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'"
In 1971, he released what would become his biggest hit, "Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'", a million-selling crossover single that helped Pride land the Country Music Association's prestigious Entertainer of the Year award, as well as Top Male Vocalist. He won CMA's Top Male Vocalist award again in 1972.
"Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'" became Pride's signature tune. Besides being a five-week country number one in late 1971 and early 1972, the song was also his only pop top-40 hit, hitting number 21, and reaching the top 10 of the Adult Contemporary charts, as well.
1970s and Northern Ireland
During the rest of the 1970s and into the 1980s, Pride continued to rack up country music hits. Other Pride standards then include "Mississippi Cotton Picking Delta Town", "Someone Loves You, Honey", "When I Stop Leavin' (I'll Be Gone)", "Burgers and Fries", "I Don't Think She's in Love Anymore", "Roll on Mississippi", "Never Been So Loved (In All My Life)", and "You're So Good When You're Bad". Like many other country performers, he has paid tribute to Hank Williams, with an album of songs that were all written by Hank entitled There's a Little Bit of Hank in Me, which included top-sellers of Williams' classics "Kaw-Liga", "Honky Tonk Blues", and "You Win Again". Pride has sold over 70 million records (singles, albums, and compilation included).
In 1975, Pride's agent sold a 40-date tour package to a United Kingdom booking agent, who onward sold four dates to Dublin-based Irish music promoter Jim Aitkien. At the time, The Troubles (Irish: Na Trioblóidí) the ethno-nationalist conflict in Northern Ireland were at their height, and most nonresident music and sports teams were not traveling to Northern Ireland through fear of becoming involved or injured. Aitken subsequently traveled to Pride's winter 1975/'76 concert in Ohio, and persuaded Pride to play one of the concerts at Belfast's Ritz Cinema. Pride played the concert in November 1976, with his album song "Crystal Chandeliers" subsequently being released as a single in the UK and Ireland. Pride subsequently became a hero to both sides of the conflict for breaking the effective touring concert ban, his song "Crystal Chandeliers" seen as a unity song, and he enabled Aitken to book further acts into Northern Ireland after his appearance.
1980s and beyond
Pride remained with RCA Records until 1986. At that point, he grew angry over the fact that RCA began to promote newer country artists and did not renew contracts with many older artists who had been with the label for years, such as Dolly Parton, John Denver, and Sylvia. He moved on to 16th Avenue Records, where Pride bounced back with the number-five hit, "Shouldn't it be Easier Than This". He had a few minor hits with 16th Avenue, as well.
Pride's lifelong passion for baseball continues; he has an annual tradition of joining the Texas Rangers for workouts during spring training. A big Rangers fan (Dallas has been his home for many years), Pride is often seen at their games.
On May 1, 1993, Pride became a member of the Grand Ole Opry.
In 2008, Pride received the Mississippi Arts Commission's lifetime achievement award during the organization's Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts.
He performed the National Anthem at Super Bowl VIII and again at game five of the 2010 World Series, accompanied both years by the Del Rio High School JROTC Color Guard. He performed the National Anthem before game six of the 1980 World Series, as well.
In 2016, Pride was selected as one of 30 artists to perform on Forever Country, a mash-up track of "Take Me Home, Country Roads", "On the Road Again", and "I Will Always Love You", which celebrates 50 years of the CMA Awards.
Personal life
Pride met his wife Rozene while he was playing baseball in the Southern states. They married in 1956 and have two sons, Kraig and Dion, and a daughter, Angela. They currently reside in Dallas, Texas. Kraig now goes by the name Carlton and has somewhat followed in his father's footsteps as a performing artist. His band, Carlton Pride and Zion started in San Marcos, Texas in 1995 and they perform a variety of reggae, funk, and soul music throughout the United States.
Dion Pride played lead guitar for his father, and entertained troops on USO tours in Panama, Honduras, Guantánamo Bay, and the island of Antigua. Dion Pride cowrote a song on Charley Pride's 2010 album Choices titled "I Miss My Home".
In 1994, Pride cowrote (with Jim Henderson) his autobiography, Pride: The Charley Pride Story. In this book, he reveals that he has struggled for years with manic depression.
Pride had a tumor removed from his right vocal cord in 1997 at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He returned to the site in February 2009 for a routine checkup and surprised the Arkansas Senate with an unplanned performance of five songs. He was joined by Governor Mike Beebe during the show. Pride is an avid fan and part owner of the Texas Rangers. He sang the national anthem before game five of the 2010 World Series, played between the Texas Rangers and San Francisco Giants. Pride sang the national anthem before game two of the 2011 ALCS between the Detroit Tigers and the Rangers. He also sang the national anthem and "America the Beautiful" prior to Super Bowl VIII.
On January 20, 2014, he sang the national anthem and performed at halftime for the Memphis Grizzlies, which hosted their 12th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Day. He also was interviewed during a break in the game that was televised nationally on NBA TV and SportSouth.
Film
On April 29, 2011, a biographical film was announced to be in the works based on Pride's life and career. The film will be produced by and star actor and professional wrestler, Dwayne Johnson.

And one of them, the 641, will make the last revenue steam trip on a Class-1 American railroad, running on the isolated Leadville-Climax in October, 1962.
