From November 6 to 11, 1914, USS Texas (BB-35) made her first and only visit to her namesake state as an active US Navy battleship.

The main purpose for the visit was to receive the ship’s silver service, which was presented during a ceremony on November 7 at Galveston, Texas.

Present at the presentation of service was Miss Claudia Lyons, the young lady who christened the ship on May 18, 1912 and Governor Oscar Branch Colquitt, of Texas Rangers fame.

"The $10,000 service was delivered to Galveston by a horse-drawn Wells Fargo wagon. The people of Texas donated the money to purchase the service."
