Have you ever been out on the water near Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary and heard a cricket like call? That might be a common tern! 

They nest on quiet, sandy beaches in large colonies that are very sensitive to the presence of humans. Throughout the day clouds of common terns can be found following the course of large predatory fish, taking advantage of the small fish driven to the surface. (Photo: USFWS. Looking Back Looking back, I have often said that there is no such thing as “bad light.” When it comes to photography, even no light at all sometimes has its purpose. That being said there is definitely “good light” or light that can enhance an image or subject. Anyone who knows me, knows my fascination with terns. Capturing images at sunrise and sunset are a favorite pastime. I have many thousands of humdrum tern images that I will never even process. On this particular morning, the sun had just peeked above the horizon illuminating this common tern as it maneuvered just feet above the wash, bathing it in a golden glow and casting fine shadows on its wing.
