Now that we’re actually in the colony of Dreshdae, it’s clear that the government power structure here is “Sith Sith Sith Sith and Czerka.” Most places with Czerka shops are “Czerka Czerka Czerka and whoever else.” Everything is Czerka. Your damn underwear is Czerka. But here Czerka is more of an afterthought.

There are a bunch of Sith students wandering around, and a bunch of hopefuls. It’s easy to tell them apart - the students, like Shaardan and Lashowe, all wear a gold-plated medallion around their necks. And all the hopefuls stare at it, conniving to figure out how to get their hands on one. “Carth, you see anyone here who looks like Dustil?” I ask him.

He scans the faces. “No,” he says, “but he’s been gone for so long, he’s grown up. What if I don’t recognize him?”

I look at him. “Trust me,” I say, “You’ll recognize him. Maybe not with your eyes, but with your heart, your soul. He’s your son, you’ll always know him.”

He stops and looks at me, actually looks at me. “Okay, Bastila,” he teases, “What, did you eat a Jedi tome for breakfast this morning?”

Jolee chuckles. “You wear the robe for long enough, the wisdom just diffuses in,” he says.

Ooh. “Hey, you know what, I just had an idea,” I say, “Cover me.” I pull off the Jedi robe, leaving me in an average tunic, and I hand the robe bundle to Jolee. “If the Sith manage the computer system, then they should keep a census, right? Keep track of everyone on the planet.” I pull out my tools and go over to a panel on the wall. “Let me see if I can pull it up, it’ll just look like I’m making repairs.”

“What if you get caught?” Carth asks.

“You let me worry about that.”

The display on the computer screen is just generic Sith. A hospitality-tourism service. I hand Carth my tool pack and grab my panel tool. “I think I remember - I met a Sith droid tech once on one of my scouting jobs and we swapped tricks. Don’t worry, I didn’t sleep with him or anything -” I say, because Carth starts to object a bit, I can see his mouth hanging open, “- we just talked shop. And he told me that all Sith systems have a programmer override code built in, for troubleshooting. It’s a universal code.”

“Did he tell you what it was?”

“Sure did, but I had to get him drunk first.” Alpha, alpha, double-bar, beta, sigma, little red star - the only way he could remember it was that rhyme. With the code in, the screen goes dark, and I open up a panel to get into the circuits. “Like taking candy from a gizka.”

“You there!” Sith trooper coming over to us.

“Just relax,” I whisper to Carth and Jolee, “I’ve got this.”

“What are you doing? Show me your work orders.”

“I don’t have any. Master Edoch here,” I say, indicating Jolee, “he just flagged me down in the hall. I’m fixing his computer access. He said all his readings were coming up in Rodian.”

“I’m not familiar with a Master Edoch,” the trooper says.

“He’s a guest of the Academy, I guess,” I say, “I don’t know, I’m just here to fix things.”

For some reason he doesn’t think to talk to Jolee. Maybe Jolee used the Force on him, I don’t know. “Come to think of it, I don’t recognize you, either.”

“No, I’m new around here,” I say, “I was serving in the fleet, but they transferred me.”

“Is that so?” he says skeptically, “I’ll have to verify that with my commander.”

“Go ahead,” I say, turning around and putting my tool back, “I’m sure your commander would love to be bothered about a simple tech just trying to fix something for a Sith master. Yeah, that’ll definitely reflect well on you.”

“You’ve got quite a mouth on you, girl,” the trooper says. But he pauses. “I’m going to let you off with a warning this time. Next time be sure to get proper work orders before you start working.”

“I’ll do that.” And he just leaves.

Carth releases the biggest sigh of relief I’ve ever heard. “I can’t believe that worked,” he says, “I thought we were going to get arrested.”

“The key is just enough confidence to make the other guy doubt himself.”

Now that I’m not being bothered by a Sith trooper anymore, getting into the Academy records is relatively easy. I don’t have complete and total access - like I can’t read files from Master Uthar’s personal database, he’s the head of the Academy - but I can get into basic stuff like the library catalog, employment records, and a school roster. The student list is long, and almost everyone has at least one symbol next to it. Some of the symbols are listed on a key - new initiate, second year, honor roll, stuff like that - but others aren’t, and I can only assume that’s information for Master Uthar and the other instructors. So it doesn’t matter to me. I search for the name Dustil Onasi. There’s only one. “There he is,” I say to Carth, and he looks at the screen, “He’s in his third year, high Force sensitivity marks, fair combat marks. Looks like he’s well-liked.”

“He’s in the Academy, then?” he says, “We have to get in there.”

“Carth, calm down,” I say softly, “Look, let me get the system back to rights, we’ll go into the cantina and we can talk about it. I don’t want to attract anymore attention, else we might get asked a question I can’t lie my way out of.” He takes a couple breaths and nods, and I set the system back to normal. Roll up my tools, take my robe back from Jolee, and we go into the cantina.

Pfft. “The Drunk Side,” what a great name.

Carth sits down at a corner table, facing the door. If Dustil walks in, I guess he doesn’t want to miss him. “Carth,” I say to him, sitting opposite him, “I want to find Dustil as much as you do, but our primary concern is the Star Map.”

“I know, I know,” he says with a sigh, “It’s just -- you can’t blame a guy for being preoccupied.”

“Never said I did.”

“You and Bastila were getting dreams about where they are, right?” he asks, “What do you know about this one?”

I shrug. “They’re never exactly clear,” I say, “This one felt… underground, sort of? But not in a natural cave, the walls were too smooth… And it was cold. And it… smelled. Musty.” I shake my head a bit - my focus started to drift a little. “Bastila thinks it’s in some kind of tomb.”

Carth looks off into the middle distance, tapping his fingers on the table. Then, “I’ve got an idea.” He stands up.

“What are you thinking?”

“You talk to droids,” he says, “Well, I talk to pilots.” And he just walks over to a couple of older guys. They start talking, he smiles, they each say a couple short words and numbers and suddenly they act like old friends. Then Carth looks over at me. “Rena, come on over,” he says. So I go, what the hell. He introduces me to the two, one is older and one is younger. “This is Kell and Owen,” he says, “They’re pilots.”

“Freighter pilots,” Owen, the older one, corrects, “Nothing like the Ebon Hawk.”

“Yeah,” Kell, the younger one, nods, “I’d love to fly something with a bit of thrust for once.”

“Wow, first the dockmaster, now you guys,” I say, “Does everyone know about the Hawk here?”

“In a small colony like this, everyone knows everyone's business,” Owen says.

“It's better than thinking too much about all the Sith lurking about, here,” Kell scoffs a bit, “The Hawk's been in and out of here for ages. An out-of-the-way starport is a good place for, uh, privateers… Not saying you are one.”

No, but Davik apparently was. “Did the Sith call you in?” Owen asks, “They’ve got a lot of stuff going out. Work’s been pretty steady since the Sith started their excavations up on the surface.”

“In case you're forgetting, partner,” Kell says to Owen, “they don't exactly want us talking about their business.”

“Ah, who cares about them?” Owen says, obviously not giving a damn, “I've seen some of those things they're digging up in those ruins in the valley. Pretty creepy, if you ask me.”

Ruins? The Star Map on Dantooine was in ruins. “What exactly are they digging up?” Carth’s grinning a bit - his grin is so sexy. Focus, Rena.

“Weird artifacts,” Owen says, “Looks like alien stuff. Maybe aliens lived on Korriban a long time ago, who knows?”

“Don’t be stupid,” Kell says, “I was talking to one of those Sith and he said there are tombs there dating back to when the Sith were here in ancient times.”

“There were Sith here in ancient times?” Owen repeats, then he scoffs. “Sounds like he was feeding you a line. Korriban's only been settled for a short time.”

“So says you,” Kell retorts, “He said that the planet was settled by the Sith a long time ago, and then they all left or something. Those tombs are really important to them.”

Tombs. That’s what Bastila thought. I look back at Carth, still grinning. Oh, you smart, sexy man, I could kiss you. “Tombs, hey?” Owen says, “That makes the stuff they send us even creepier. Wish I didn't have to haul it around.”

“How would one get to these excavations, exactly?” I ask.

“It's in a valley on the surface,” Kell says, “beyond some mountains to the east. No land route - that's why they have us fly in.”

“Shows what you know,” Owen says, “The academy has a route through the mountain - that's how all their students get to the excavation site.”

“Well, regardless,” Kell says to him and me, “the Sith don't let anybody near that valley.” He scoffs. “Even when we land, they watch us like a Drayberian hawk and want us gone quickly.”

Carth leans over my shoulder and whispers into my ear, “Sounds like we’ve both got reasons to get into the Academy.” He thanks the pilots, and we go.

I wonder where Jolee went. Oh, wait, there he is, he was buying supplies from the Czerka office, watching Czerka staff taking the stuff back to the Hawk. He looks at us as we walk over to him. “You can never have enough spare parts and medpacs, right?” he asks rhetorically, “I also got sold some local ale and actual food. After twenty years of living off the land, synthesized food tastes like tach droppings.” He shudders in disgust, then asks, “So, what have you two been up to?”

“Oh, just learning where the Star Map is,” I say casually, “Roughly.”

He looks at me skeptically. ‘I’m not going to like this, am I?”

“No, and neither do I,” I say with a sigh, “but it’s what we have to do. We have to find a way into the Sith Academy.”

Lumber has long been the subject of debate over trade policy, ecosystem conservation, and climate change. But in a white-hot housing and remodeling/home improvement market, lumber prices spiked to new highs. DIYers grappling with cabin fever as well as increased demand for home remodeling contractors and home builders looking to increase housing supply sent the lumber market bonkers. Meanwhile, sawmills shut down and later faced a labor crisis, causing a shortage and subsequently causing record-breaking prices.

In some ways, the shortage is a simple supply and demand problem, but the great lumber crisis of 2021 also highlights all sorts of other things, including the global supply chain, climate change and environmental protection, labor shortages, US-Canada trade relations, and the out-of-control housing market. THE SHORTAGE

As North America went into lockdown in March, 2020, a slew of businesses shut down. Lumber production facilities were no exception: Sawmills laid off workers, cut hours, and struggled to balance staying open with minimizing COVID transmission risk.

(Quick note: Though the terms are often used interchangeably, there’s a distinction between lumber and timber. Lumber is wood that’s been processed into rectangular beams used primarily to build homes; about 20 percent of all wood harvested in the US goes to lumber. Timber is unprocessed wood and trees, which can be turned into lumber or pulp, paper, fuel and other staple products.)

Initially, the sawmills closing down seemed broadly inconsequential; after all, Americans were stuck at home, and sending construction workers out put them at significant risk of contracting COVID-19. At the time, basically all economic activity stopped, which included homebuilding and remodeling.

Few producers anticipated that before long, there’d be an uptick in DIY home improvement projects like deck building and home office creation. Repair and remodelling (R&R) markets were responsible for the majority of the lumber demand spike, notes Paul Jannke, principal of Forest Economic Advisors (FEA). A June, 2020, survey by architecture firm The Farnsworth Group found that more than 70 percent of homeowners had started new DIY projects at home, many of them attributing long hours in lockdown to their sudden desire for refurbishments. Stimulus checks offered Americans more money to pay for these endeavors.

Interest in home-buying spiked over the pandemic, too, creating a housing boom that has yet to wane. But housing starts—new build construction projects—have been historically low since the 2008 recession, and haven’t quite recovered yet. The US is just not building as many houses as it used to. Many who couldn’t afford to buy during the COVID-19 housing boom had no choice but to channel their COVID-19 cabin fever into where they currently reside.

“Everyone's stuck in their houses, they're looking around, they're seeing all the things that are wrong with it, they have to work from home, and oh, by the way, their kids have to study from home too,” Jannke said. “I might just want to add on another room.”

According to Jannke, just over 70 percent of wood used in the US is grown here. The rest is imported, and around 83 percent that wood comes from Canada, much of it from British Columbia: This is highly valuable wood from Spruce, Pine and Fur (SPF) trees that many regard as better for homes than the more prevalent species of tree found in the US, like yellow pine, grown in the southeast, between Texas and New York.

The US is home to 514-million acres of timberland, 30 percent of which is managed publicly (by federal, state or local agencies), according to Rocky Goodnow, vice president of North American timber service at FEA. The remaining timber (359 million acres, Goodnow says) is owned by private companies and individuals. Many of these producers are small operations—47 percent of lumber is produced by non-corporate entities—competing in a deregulated environment. But in Canada, lumber production is managed by provincial governments, and, critics say, is unfairly subsidized.

This rubs some in the American lumber industry—like the US Lumber Coalition—the wrong way. Some say Canada is able to sell logs to US clients at lower prices because federal subsidies keep costs low. Others have accused the country of “dumping,” that is, selling wood to the US at a price below the cost of production and crowding out the market, making it harder for American sawmills to compete.

For decades, the US has gone back and forth on tariffs it imposes on Canadian lumber; a recent tariff proposal has proven polarizing: The US Lumber Coalition lauded the move as a step toward “a level playing field,” while the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) critiqued it for threatening the already surging cost of homes. (The NAHB says the rising cost of lumber has made the average single-family home $36,000 more expensive on average).

The years-old trade dispute is often used to explain fluctuations in the lumber market. But researchers say this time around, the argument is overblown (the closing of the border between U.S. and Canada has also not had a direct impact; trade has continued more or less as normal).

“It has nothing to do with tariffs,” said Rajan Parajuli, assistant professor in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University, who notes that Canadian lumber prices don’t differ enough from US market prices to have a tremendous impact on US producers. Parajuli is among a few from the school who studied the impact of trade disputes with Canada on lumber prices; in a 2016 paper, he found that American consumers eat the cost of tariffs in higher lumber prices, and lost $2.3-billion between 2006 and 2015 due to trade limitations between the US and Canada.

“The real economics say that the consumers are the losers,” Parajuli said.

THE SAWMILL PROBLEM

By May of last year, wood prices were rising, but there was hardly the production capacity to supply it. This created a shortage, one that remains today, even as prices finally cool, in part because saw mills are struggling to attract new workers. June jobs data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) showed that mill employment levels fell by a few thousand jobs over the course of the pandemic, and only recently reached pre-pandemic rates in April. But as mills aim to scale up production even further, some are still feeling pressure to attract workers.

The lumber shortage has been, maybe as you'd expect, a topic of obsession for people in the housing industry. A podcast made by the NAHB has dedicated the majority of its recent episodes to the lumber shortage and when it might get better.

“I've raised my wages over 10 percent across the board,” Ross Stock, general manager of Western Cascades Industries saw mill in Oregon, said on a May episode of the podcast, called Housing Developments. “I'm hiring in every direction. And I've had limited success finding people.”

Much of the job market is reckoning with wages and working conditions in a post-pandemic economy right now, and working in a sawmill is not particularly lucrative. It's also dangerous.

“You can work in a mill, and make $20 an hour and it's hot, because they're not air conditioned, and it's kind of heavy labor,” Jannke says. “Young folks are not choosing to get into this industry.”

Jannke notes that automation is changing the nature of new hires in saw mills (“A modern sawmill is not the same thing as a sawmill from 20 years ago,” he said. “Today, you need people who have computer science degrees.”) But the manual jobs that remain can be dangerous; BLS occupational injury data shows fatality rates were more than 30 times the rate across the job market, with around 66 deaths per year between 2006 and 2015.

Sawmill owners are starting to pay workers more to compensate for shortages, and weekly paychecks have increased by an average of 10.4 percent since before the pandemic, the Washington Post recently reported. But Jannke says wage increases might not be enough to up production and fill the supply gap. “We're trying to ramp up our capacity really, really quickly,” he said. “That's a lot of labor that you have to get in rural areas.”

The US Department of Commerce is taking aim at shrinking the supply gap by reducing competition from Canada. It recently recommended increasing tariffs on lumber imports from 9 to 18 percent as a way to privilege American lumber production and boost jobs at home. Proposed on May 21, the increase would need several rounds of review before going into effect—and it has already garnered controversy.

What about wildfires? Will this summer’s heat impact our tree supply?

Yes and no. Jannke says this year’s record heat across much of the US, including lumber-producing regions in the Pacific Northwest, is “quite concerning.” Last year saw record-breaking wildfires and this does interrupt the supply chain: Saw mills had to shut down and evacuate to avoid the fires, loggers left their jobs to fight blazes, and wood stores were lost. He anticipates that this summer’s wildfire season will be similarly devastating.

“Since the demand supply is so tight right now disrupting the supply of lumber is just not a good thing,” he said. “It’s pretty scary.”

The impacts of climate change are as bad news for the industry as they are for ecosystems. And some fear that clear-cutting practices create a vicious feedback loop with wildfire risk: Open patches of forest raise overall temperatures, while woody debris leftover from logging becomes easy tinder, making forests more vulnerable to blazes.

But industry experts like Jannke say that, even in a changing climate, our wood supply remains strong: “We've been harvesting below our growth rates for a while. So the problem is not that the industry is harvesting too much,” he said.

This is largely because of the US timber market’s design, notes Dr. Robert Bardon, associate dean of Extension at the NC State University College of Natural Resources. Producers have a vested interest in keeping their trees growing and plant almost immediately after cutting.

“We've not seen instances of not having enough trees to harvest in, oh, 100 years,” he says.

Cutting down trees does cause disturbances to ecosystems, but Jankke believes the industry has become “more conscious” of this in its harvesting patterns, striving to cut in such a way that minimizes harms to animal and plant species.

Of course, changing weather patterns do have the potential to harm tree growth patterns: In western Canada, for example, a bark beetle called the mountain pine has proliferated, infecting and killing trees at growing rates, primarily because of climate change. These beetles fly from tree to tree to lay eggs underneath their bark, often carrying with them a fungus that disrupts the flow of water and nutrients within the tree, causing it to die. By 2012, the mountain pine beetle had attacked more than 53 percent of British Columbia’s merchantable pine trees.

The beetle's prevalence was spurred on by climate change: These beetle populations are unable to withstand freezing temperatures and typically die each winter. But warming temperatures allow mountain pines to live longer, causing outbreaks that infect trees at a larger scale.

It’s possible that changing weather patterns affect US lumber stock the same way: Though it’s still too soon to tell, the effects of the climate crisis on ecosystems are wide-reaching and any number of factors can harm tree species.

THE CRISIS ENDS (?)

Though lumber prices are still far above pre-pandemic levels, they fell by more than 40 percent in June, indicating that the crisis is not as acute as it recently was. This could be because sawmills are finally filling empty jobs, or it could be because demand for at-home projects is falling as COVID-19 restrictions lift and people go back into the world.

The cash price per 1,000 board feet of lumber is now $1,113, down from an all-time high of near $1,600 at the end of May (for context, it was $400 for the same amount in February of 2020.) Some people, of course, could consider building homes with alternative materials, like steel (which is facing its own shortage) or concrete. But Jankke, Parajuli and Bardon all caution that, ironically, this is less sustainable than building a home out of wood, which absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere even after a home is constructed.

“It can potentially be part of the solution to the climate crisis,” Jannke said.

While we don’t have any factual statistics to prove this right or wrong, we still pick DoorDash over UberEats as our top side hustle for food delivery. If you have a car, bike, or scooter, get started with Door Dash today and start making money for your next vacation, your upcoming wedding, or whatever expense you’re saving for!

Maybe you just don’t feel like driving people around in your car or maybe you don’t even have a car. Depending on the city you live in, Uber Eats allows you to deliver food to people via your car, bike, or scooter. Turn on the app in the morning before work, when you get home, or whenever you have some extra time to make money on your terms.

3. VIPKID

VIPKID will pay you up to $22/hour to teach English from the comfort of your home to children in China. Currently VIPKID has over 70,000 teachers teaching English as a second language to over 600,000 children in China.

They do require you to have a Bachelor’s degree from either the USA or Canada and they ask for “some teaching experience”. However, from the teachers we have spoke with from VIPKID, they said “teaching” doesn’t have to mean teaching in a traditional educational setting.

The lessons are 30 minutes long and you will be paid up to $11 for each 30-minute lesson. One thing to note is since you are teaching across the globe in a live setting, you will be teaching at odd hours (late at night or first thing in the morning). However, the teachers we spoke to said it was fun, rewarding, and it paid well for being able to stay at home and teach from their laptops.

Did you know you can rent your room or house out at Airbnb? They have been around since 2008 and millions of people have been renting out their rooms or entire homes to travelers from all over the world. If you do this right, you may be able to cover your entire mortgage! If you’re going to be gone for a month or two, you may as well allow your space to make money while you’re gone.

I started this blog in 2015 from my laptop at my kitchen table and today it generates over $10,000 per month 🙂 However, in the beginning it was just a side hustle project that turned into full-time income much quicker than I would have ever dreamed.

If you love writing, then starting a blog is exactly the right side hustle for you. There are many ways to generate income from blogging, with one of the most popular being through affiliate income.

How does it work?

You know how you can share a referral link from companies you love and they will send you $5 for referring them a customer? Affiliate partners work the exact same way.

Inbox Dollars is a rewards club that pays you in cash for completing a variety of online activities. This can include searching the internet, filling out surveys, printing off coupons, and shopping online. If you are already doing these things, you may as well get paid for it, right?

Fiverr is a platform where you can sell your products and services starting at $5 per gig. After you have a few $5 gigs under your belt, you can start increasing how much you charge. Here at Money Peach, we hire people from Fiverr all the time. Just recently, we found someone for a quick logo design and another to transcribe some videos we created.

Also, the Fiverr platform does take 20% from each gig. Therefore, if you do a $5 gig, you will take home $4 per gig. However, if you can complete 3-4 gigs in an hour, your hourly rate could start at $16 – $20 per hour!

Selling on Amazon is almost identical as selling on eBay in terms of fees and ease of use. However, sometimes items that don’t sell as well on eBay do better on Amazon and vice versa. Either way, it is a side hustle worth looking at if you can buy for cheap and resell for a higher price.

14. Amazon Affiliate Links

I know of a guy who started out as a handyman. He then took that idea as a handyman and started his own blog to teach people how to fix things themselves through blogging and video tutorial. At the end of every post or video, he would tell you what tool he used to get the job done and would provide a link directly to Amazon for you to purchase that product.

However, he also signed up for a free Amazon Affiliate Account. Every time someone clicks on his link and buys ANYTHING on Amazon, he gets a commission! Think about this: Amazon pays him for the tool he recommended and also for anything else they Add To Cart. This is why I love blogging and why I have a free tutorial to help you get started.

15. eBook Publishing

Make money by writing your own book and self publishing it on Amazon for free. There are different options available for how your can price your book and earn income from the sale of your book in the Amazon store. Questions about self publishing your own book? Check this out.

16. Etsy

Instead of having to open up your brick and mortar store, sell your creations on Etsy. Whether you make clothing, crafts, baby toys, or jewelry, you can open up your own store at Etsy. I have a friend selling her awesome clothing line on Etsy and it brings in a very nice income for the family. This is another great side hustle, but don’t expect instant results. You may need to be patient for this one.

17. Craigslist

We all know you can buy and sell stuff on Craigslist, but have you ever thought about offering a service you can provide. If providing a service isn’t your thing, you can scan Craigslist for great deals and then later resell items for a profit. This takes persistence and patience, but I have a friend who went from a $4k truck to a $24k in truck in 18 months by flipping cars from Craigslist.

There are also many other sites competing with Craigslist and you may have better exposure by posting on these sites like Craigslist.

18. User Testing

Don’t want to do an online survey, but still like to surf the web and earn some cash? Companies will pay you to try out their apps or visit their websites and give them feedback. Usertesting and UserFeel uses your feedback on apps and websites that aren’t as user-friendly and then pays your for it.

19. Become a Freelance Writer

If you are a good writer, consider searching online sites such as freelancer.com for writing jobs. Individuals or companies might need freelance writers for a number of reasons.

Individuals or companies might need a writer for their blog or website, or a company might need a writer for its instruction manuals, for instance.

Pro Tip: The best way to learn how to get freelance writing jobs is from someone who has been doing it for years. Holly Johnson generates over $100k per year freelance writing and she has a program to show you how to do it.

Make money on Zazzle as a designer by selling your artwork on different products or you can actually make and manufacture the products for sale. I have a friend who takes old dry wood and paints slogans on them. She needs to sell them on Zazzle; she could create a very quick and profitable side hustle.

21. eBay

You can have your own store up in only a few minutes at eBay. To start, you must have a seller account, must be verified through PayPal. You are even able to give a detailed description of your store with a catchy design to attract customers. I have a friend who will buy all of the unused bras at a last chance type of store and resell them for a profit at her eBay store. Last I heard, she was doing $1,000/month in her first couple of months.

22. Do Transcription Work or Data Entry Work

Companies hire transcriptionists for a number of reasons. A doctor’s office might need a medical transcriptionist to record information about a patient’s appointment, or law enforcement agencies might need transcription services for court cases or suspect interviews.

Data entry work, which is a bit easier than transcription work, is also available from companies who hire people to work from home. Simply google “transcription work” or “data entry jobs” for a list of companies currently hiring work-from-home reps.

If you are unfamiliar with Uber or Lyft, then make sure you still have a pulse and you are breathing air.

To get started, some minimum requirements you need are a car, a smartphone, and the Uber or Lyft app. You become available to drive as soon as you complete the activation process and then you are ready to start earning money. Fares are paid out weekly or up to 5X a day when you register for Instant Pay with your debit card!

29. Rent Out Your Garage or Driveway

You’ve likely heard of AirBnB, where you can rent out rooms in your house – or your whole house – to travelers wanting to avoid the impersonal feel and high cost of hotel rooms.

Maybe you can’t or don’t want to rent out rooms in your house, but you might have space in your garage to rent out. Sites such as Air Garage help people rent out their garage spaces and driveway spaces.

People might want to rent out your garage or driveway space because they work close to where you live and want cheaper and safer parking options.

Or they might want to rent out your parking space because there’s an event near you, such as a state fair or sporting event.

Network marketing (sometimes referred to as multi-level-marketing) can sometimes have a bad connotation if you have ever been scammed in the past. However, there are very reputable companies out there that you can start working for today with very little buy-in or overhead. A member of our family started off her network marketing business as a side hustle and has turned it into a part-time gig with full-time income. Warning: if you are told it doesn’t require any actual work – run away!

47. Personal Training

Someone out there wants to get into better shape, and they are willing to pay you to help them. If you love fitness, this would be a perfect side hustle for you.

48. Tutoring

Take your education and use it to make money on the side. Tutor students and get paid handsomely.

If you have a gift for a musical skills, consider teaching that skill to local kids. You might be able to find jobs by looking on Craigslist or by seeking out local public school or homeschooling groups to connect with parents who have school-aged children.

50. Start a Baking Business

Do you have a gift for baking goodies such as cake, muffins or cookies? Why not use that gift to make yourself some extra cash?

Events such as birthday parties, weddings, office parties and meetings, retirement parties and more often have baked treats as a part of their celebration.

Advertise your culinary skills on Craigslist and with local event booking venues for your bakery services.

Be sure to check with state officials on what the rules are for serving and selling food in your area first.

51. Become a Sports Umpire

Are you knowledgeable about the rules and regulations of certain sports? Do you like working with kids? Recreation associations often pay good money for organized sports umpires for football, baseball, and more.

In our area, umpires earn about $30 an hour. Check with local sporting organizations for job opening details.

Physical Labor Hustles

If you don’t putting in a little sweat equity, you can do very well side hustling with some physical labor attached to it. I did #50 when I was getting out of debt and generated over $1,000 each month.

52. Clean Pools

This requires very little overhead and is simple to do. Go to Google Earth and look up which homes in your neighborhood have a pool, and offer to start today. I actually did this to get out of debt and it worked out great!

53. House Cleaning

People are busy and don’t have time to clean their homes. This is where you come in 🙂 Search your area in Craigslist to get an idea for pricing your own services.

54. Mowing Lawns

If you don’t have the funds to purchase all the equipment, then offer to your mow lawns with their equipment. I actually did this in grade school because I wasn’t old enough to drive. I just showed up, grabbed their lawnmower, and was paid.

55. Painting Gates

Gates fade and someone needs to repaint them. A kid in the neighborhood took pics of faded gates and pretty gates and posted them on the mailbox with his number and price. (I think one of the faded gate pics he took was my gate also).

56. Painting Services

Remember that movie American Pie 2 where they spend the summer in a lake house and do some side painting. No one likes painting their houses or walls, so why not help them out for a little side cash? Start out small by offering to paint a bedroom or two, and work your way up from there. Pricing rule: $1 per square ft of painting.

I live in Phoenix where it will hover at 116°F during the summer. During the hottest weeks, there is a guy who sells snow cones and water for a premium.

Become a task rabbit and get paid. People in your neighborhood are looking to pay you to put together furniture from Ikea, do their grocery shopping, install a ceiling fan, be a bartender at their party, or mount their TV to the wall.

Somebody is always selling a home, and homes sell faster and for more money when they are “staged”.

There are many legit companies that offer to hire customer service representatives who can from home. One of the more popular work-from-home companies is U-Haul, the well-known moving company.

If you like kids and don’t go out on the weekends, become a babysitter. Advertise to all of your friends (and Facebook Friends) that you will watch their kids so they can have a date night. New to the area? Then get connected with Care.com to become a certified/recommended babysitter in your area.

76. Dog Walking

Create this ad: “Love your dog but simply don’t have time to walk them? Let me help you!” There will always be someone willing to pay to keep their doggy happy, and this person is you.

77. Gig Walking

Download the free App and then find “gigs” in your neighborhood that companies are willing to pay you for. Can you check out the price of milk in a certain store for $6 or snap a pic of a storefront for $5 on the way to work? Note: You will start off with the crappier jobs in the beginning, but prove yourself and you will start getting offered the higher-paying jobs soon enough.

78. Golf Course

If you love being around the golf course (or don’t mind a few drunk old men) you can make pretty good money part-time by collecting balls off the range, cleaning golf carts, or serving cold beers at the tee box.
