Few things are more quintessentially, uniquely American than Minor League Baseball. Played out in small and not-so-small cities from Portland, Me. to San Bernardino by teams both affiliated and unaffiliated with Major League Baseball, the summer game on the minor league level proves an affordable, entertaining night out. As a bonus, it’s a coalescing force uniting folks of all ages and backgrounds in support of their teams.

And what fun lover could resist a pastime spawning such memorable team names as the Rocket City Trash Pandas, Toledo Mud Hens or Amarillo Sod Poodles?

In recent years, MiLB stadiums have done more than serve as backdrop for date nights and family outings. In many cities, the decision to place new ballparks downtown has lured folks back to central cities, helping catalyze downtown revivals and revitalization of entire swaths of downtown real estate.

That renewal in turn has triggered a virtuous cycle. It has sparked development of new homes and opening of new eateries, shops and businesses in central cities. And it’s brought vital community gathering spots to urban hubs. You might say the MiLB downtown stadium is the gift that keeps on giving.

As the boys of summer celebrate their annual rite of autumn with the Major League Baseball postseason, let’s examine a trio of those cities, teams and ballparks.

Intentional anchor

In Fayetteville, N.C. a struggling downtown was accorded new life when the city council earmarked more than $100 million for an urban revitalization built around development of a $40.2 million downtown ballpark.

Unveiled in April, 2019, Segra Stadium, home of the Fayetteville Woodpeckers of the Low-A Carolina League, has meant new beginnings for the city where Babe Ruth stroked his first professional home run.

New enterprises have arrived in waves, starting with small businesses and leading to a new Hyatt Place Hotel, parking garage and office space. Since its launch, the ballpark has attracted more than 30 new surrounding businesses. What some have called the “intentional anchor” of the stadium has been a particular boon to women- and Black-owned businesses. A Lending Tree study conducted this year noted Fayetteville has the highest percentage of businesses owned by people of color in the U.S.

Mirroring what’s happened in other cities, Segra Stadium has brought residents back to the Cool Spring Downtown District of Fayetteville. Some 54,000 square feet of new residential development has arrived since the park’s opening. Under construction are another 20,000 square feet, with 150,000 square feet planned. “These numbers illustrate so well what a tangible asset the stadium has been to the Cool Spring Downtown District,” says Bianca Shoneman, the district’s president and CEO.

Philanthropic pillar

Central city minor league baseball stadiums tend not to go unused when the home team is on the road, or when the MiLB season concludes for another year.

Nowhere is that truer than in Sugar Land, Texas. There, the city’s movers and shakers intended Constellation Field to be not just the home of the city’s Triple-A Space Cowboys MiLB team, but the entire community’s “home base.” In 2017, it served as a temporary shelter for those displaced by Hurricane Harvey. Reflecting the Space Cowboys’ spirit of community involvement, it’s also hosted volunteer fairs and blood drives, carving out a niche as a true pillar of community philanthropy.

Downtown growth

More than $200 million in new Clark County development has followed relocation of a California MiLB franchise to Summerlin, Nev. and The Howard Hughes Corp.’s 2019 unveiling of the $150 million, 10,000-seat downtown Las Vegas Ballpark. The stadium is home of the Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators, an Oakland A’s affiliate.

The park’s arrival has been the catalyst for the development of 1700 Pavilion, a 10-story, 267,000-square-foot downtown Summerlin office building. Last year, in the wake of the relocation of the team and the opening of the stadium, the city sold 1,456 new homes, representing a 10% surge over sales tallied two years earlier.

The term “If you build it they will come,” is famously associated with a classic film. But increasingly, U.S. minor league cities are finding what was conveyed on a reel is a truism for real.

So over on patreon Trevor asked for my take on the Addams Family and I grew up LOVING the Addams family movies so here we are. Instead of doing a straight up style interpretation, I decided to do a full on design challenge, using the characters as bases to make a black southern gothic Addams au. I actually drew the kids first, using the character bases of Wednesday and Pugsley to create some delightful kiddos I'm calling Sunday and Blanche. I of course then redesigned Gomez and Morticia into Carlisle and Mortesha.

The Addams have a very specific high aristocratic goth aesthetic (they've got a butler and nobody really works among other things) so in this re-imagining I wanted to go with vibes that run a little more middle class/upper middle class.  I thought it would be interesting to think about what would be considered weird and off-putting in an entirely different culture, and how being a big ol' goth is way less controversial than it used to be.

I tried to keep this short (HAHAHAHAHAHA) so I didn't spin off into an essay about villain coded families, black people in the horror genre, and normalcy as it pertains to social survival, but just...bits of that are in these designs and lore. Keep that in mind.

Also I made the kids twins because they've flip flopped in age so much in different media and also twins run in my family (i'm the daughter of one). And let's face it, I'm pulling a lot of their southern gothic traits from living as a southern goth so *shrug*.

The Parents

From the moment he saw her he knew that there was a 50/50 chance of him either never making it out of that swamp alive or marrying the figure that was creeping out from under the distant willow tree in a black cocktail dress. The third time she found him trussed up in one of her traps, he complimented her rope work and asked if she'd like to go out sometime after his head wound stopped bleeding.

Or while it was still bleeding.

If she was into that.

Some kids and a mysteriously burnt down Piggly Wiggly later, their love is still as strong and inescapable as a bear trap in a sink hole.

Carlisle Guillermo (now Addams through marriage but I wanted to give him two first names for a name since Gomez has two last names) makes a vaguely described living practicing ‘law’ around town. A loophole king, people come to him from miles around with contracts signed in blood, fights over chunks of hair buried in their rivals’ yard, dehydrated primate hands, memories that seemed like dreams until the evidence of their happenings became too real, and other regular Legal Items asking for counsel which he is all too happy to give. For a price. Sometimes that price is a homemade pie and sometimes it’s a million dollars, depends on who you are. Whatever you’re asked to pay it’s worth that price, and if you try to scam him out of work or he just plain doesn’t like you? Well. He knows how to twist a contract better than anything at the crossroads.

And he always gets his due.

He doesn’t just serve the local (living)humans though, there are many things that need proper legal representation in this day and age. You wouldn’t believe how many city councils try to build on sacred burial grounds even after he lets them know that his ghostly clients are totally gonna haunt the FUCK out of the ensuing shitty condos and curse their families for all eternity. At least 50% of his energy goes towards dealing with real estate bullshit.

Carl is an excitable and good natured(?) man who loves his family, cigars, dancing, and his many knife-based hobbies. People find him very charming once they get past the feeling that they’re talking to a sultry gator badly disguising itself as a human. I didn’t put a ton of deep thought into designing him, mostly I wanted to make a middle aged dude who looked like he would have been voted ‘most likely to smooch the literal devil’ in high school. Tbh he probably has, but no demonic ex’s can compare to his lovely wife~

Mortesha Addams(her name was already perfect so I just tweaked it)is a woman of many talents. A self proclaimed homemaker, she prides herself on a greenhouse full of Concerning Foliage, a beautiful wasp apiary, and a coop full of what are probably chickens that she keeps for what are probably eggs. She’s also an avid creator of the outsider art that can be seen around the estate. She has taken on the family business of selling her homemade goods in a little stall by the road just outside the swamp with her mom, and makes pretty good money doing so. A surprising amount of poison gets bought in quaint southern towns.

Speaking of poison, people who come out to the edge of the swamp to buy it are usually carrying a lot of secrets around, and Mortesha knows most of them. It’s not like she pries the truth out of people, it just so happens that many nervous hellos eventually turn into the tragic backstory power hour if she’s alone with a client for long enough. She supposes that’s just how people are. Despite the fact that the Addams are very active in the community (whether the community likes it or not) she especially, as a direct descendant of the first Addams matriarch, is seen as…Well not an outsider because the community feels A Certain Way about outsiders and despite it all the Addams are their people, but maybe something like an exception. They feel like whatever weirdness they’re hiding can’t be weirder than any given Addams, so they get a little loose with their words.

This is amusing to her, since Addams’ don’t naturally keep the kind dramatic secrets that their surface level prim and proper neighbors do. It’s much more fun to openly talk about those things.

Do they have a sadly decrepit yet terrifying grandma up in the attic? Yeah, like three. They got a tv, all the creepy porcelain dolls they could want, and they’re close to family. Where do you keep your gram-grams?

Any bodies buried on the property? Yeah some, but most are thrown to the gators.

Any creeping through the balmy summer night with ill intentions? Yeah dude, everyone loves a nice family stroll.

What about dangerous forbidden love? If an adult Addams isn’t incorporeal then they’re either queer or in a torrid romance with some person/thing mysteriously drawn to that awful swamp. Sometimes both at the same time. Most times actually.

Mortesha would know.

The current head of the Addams family is just as outgoing as her husband but a lot quieter and harder to read. She never really seems to get mad about much and always has a genteel smile for everyone whether they deserve it or not. A seven foot tall human shaped “Oh, bless your heart”. A perfectly composed Lady even when she’s, oh I dunno, burning down a Piggly Wiggly. You know. A regular southern mom. Chat her up at the hair salon for 50% off a jar of wasp honey with your next purchase of a mysterious but foreboding packet of herbs.

Designing her was pretty easy because I just drew a lankier Grace Jones and called it a day. I had some problems with her outfit simply because if we were going HARD southern gothic then she’d probably be wearing a white/cream dress with a fuller skirt but I thought keeping the silhouette and the black was more important. She’s supposed to be an anti southern gothic southern gothic character anyway. A woman who looks like she has a million secrets who is actually the most open person you could meet. For better or worse. The red hair came from a coloring error that I really ended up liking (my mom had red hair her whole childhood that only darkened up in high school so I can buy that an Addams can be naturally fire engine red) and the veil was to get more of that classic Morticia silhouette in there.

The Children

Sunday and Blanche are the twin children of Carlisle and Mortesha Addams. Some say the Addams clan got their cursed homestead when a wealthy local businessman made a deal with the devil and lost, leaving his grand mansion to his least favorite maid and cutting his losses once he realized that the swamp would do everything it could to drag the house into the water and take what was owed with its horrible curse. Others say that the family has just always squatted there and no one really cares because man, fuck that particular swamp. Have you been in there? Absolute horror show.

Anyway.

Blanche is the more outgoing sibling and quite the engineer/mad scientist in the making. He started going grey at 2 weeks old but considering he was also rocking some extra fingers, toes, and a tiny tail (he takes after his dad), his parents just put it on the 'not life threatening' pile and decided not to worry about it. He's the kind of smart that teachers find utterly infuriating, less a dog eagerly learning and obeying commands and more a hyena who keeps teaching itself how to pick locks. He has a few friends in his school's robotics club (which they honestly allowed him to make so the school could contain his... creations) but mostly hangs out with his sister exploring the swamp. They find all sorts of neat things in there! wedding rings, suspiciously lumpy garbage bags, cloaked cultists who can't read private property signs, it's an adventure every day!

Blanche is all about experimentation with his creations, his look, and his tether to this mortal coil. Is lipstick a cool thing to try? Let's find out. Can he get out of a strait jacket fast enough after being pushed into the depths of the swamp by his sister? let's find out. He's not dead yet and confused local doctors can attest to the fact that he's rarely attained more than a bad bruise so he's pretty set on continuing to kiss rattlesnakes on their cute little heads and have his sister practice her knife throwing at him until that fact changes.

Blanche is very much a country goth. Cowboy boots (customized by his mom), knife, and lighter are daily accessories. He likes to wear the crusty swamp jewelry they find (the rust adds a splash of color!) and despite appearances he does try to keep himself neat. He's just got  natural Grunge Colors and a tendency to wear clothes he likes until they fall apart. Pugsley always seemed the most modernly styled to me (which might just be because little boys clothes have been the same for a long time) so I wanted Blanche to be the most purposely fashionable Addams. Everyone else is goth by nature, but he's the only one truly familiar with goth as an alternative fashion.

I got really into designing Blanche because honestly, I find Pugsley to be the most boring member of the family. And he was hard to design! I had to mess with his vibe a lot to get him looking how I wanted. I know he's supposed to evoke an " 'evil' little boy next door who's parents never reign him in", but that's just goth Dennis The Menace.  I's 2020. We can at least go queer goth Calvin.

Sunday was much easier to design. Wednesday was my favorite as a child (of course) and I really wanted to keep the spirit of her look while adding things like billowy sleeves (it gets HOT down here), big poofy twists instead of braids, and a nice tie. She's a professional after all, been running the local pet cemetery since she was 6 and the previous groundskeeper met with an unfortunate accident after telling her that tarantulas don't have souls. Her specialty is creating beautiful naturalistic animal funerals similar to those that Maquenda (https://linktr.ee/artofmaquenda) makes, and she takes pride in creating miniature dioramas of her subjects after each burial which she uses as a kind of 3D catalog for future clients.

She really wants to try out her skills on humans one day. Well. Publicly try out her skills. Lotta random bodies float into the swamp. None of them have turned down her requests for diorama models so far. Most seem downright flattered. Plus, she usually figures out which graveyard/crime scene they floated over from and gets her parents to give them a lift back. She'll even help enact terrifying revenge from beyond the grave on whoever put them there if she's not, y'know, busy.

Besides arts, crafts, and pet based funerary arrangements, Sunday is an avid lover of archery (any ranged weapon really), books where little fantasy adventure animals die dramatic deaths, and history. She is That Kid who eagerly raises her hand when asked who Christopher Columbus was and ends up being sent out of class after 15 minutes for making 'a scene'. Her favorite party trick is just picking an item in the room and talking about how it relates to either some obscure historical figure with a buck wild life or a horrible disaster. At least one charity pancake breakfast ended with children in tears after her vivid description of the Great Molasses Flood of 1919.

Social-wise, while Wednesday is the girl that people ask to smile because they think she'd, "look so pretty", Sunday is rarely asked anything at all. People just kind of assume from her quiet nature (in between horrible history facts) that she's angry all the time and that she hates everyone. This is untrue. She hates some people but she's ambivalent to most everyone else and even downright friendly if you bother to talk to her like a person instead of a terrifying cryptid. Like, she IS a terrifying cryptid but she's also a little girl.  

That’s about it for now. One day I might do the other family members but for now I’m happy with the four I’ve redesigned. Making an au! Lurch in a family that doesn’t do butlers could be interesting. Over on patreon I put forth that he could just be Motesha’s mute little brother (similar bone structure) but Amy Crook had the nice idea of quote: “ a mysterious "cousin" that "helps around the house" whose origins are both long in the past and faintly unsettling. He's good for lifting heavy things, like that tank of propane you're about to throw into the burning Piggly Wiggly... “ which i now consider canon. Who's kid is he? How old is he? Not important. Anyone willing to commit arson with you is family.

Listed: David Boulter

Tindersticks co-founder David Boulter released his second solo album, Lover’s Walk, earlier this year. It’s a full-length version of a spoken word vision that’s been slow-melding its way to realization for decades. Boulter penned his first composition in the style in 1995, before subbing his own voice for frontman Stuart Staples’ on his second effort in 2012. “Chocolate,” the opener of the band’s ninth album, The Something Rain, also added a setting to Boulter’s recollections: early-1980’s Nottingham. Boulter had been steadily accumulating film scoring experience with Tindersticks along the way and, beginning with Mista (co-written with Vasek Havelka) in 2014, he started to branch out on his own. His first proper solo album, Yarmouth, applied his instrumental prowess to a collection of songs with names like “Seesaw” and “The Morning Mist,” that evoked the emotional experience of his childhood summers spent in the resort town of the album’s title.

In 2021, he put all of these pieces together on Lover’s Walk – a beautifully understated album that, as Dusted’s Chris Liberato noted in his review, “floats gracefully around the edges of its biggest moments while somehow only deepening their impact.” Set in the period before Boulter left Nottingham for good, the album pays tribute to a person, place, and time that shaped who he is, using his signature blend of organ, accordion, and percussion. He also released a digital instrumental version of Lover’s Walk in early November, in response to numerous fan requests. Below, David Boulter shares a list of the “music that shaped me, continues to shape me.”

Cabaret Voltaire – “Nag Nag Nag”

I was so sad to hear of Richard H Kirk’s death. I was never a dancer. But I couldn’t resist the pull of this track in Nottingham’s Rock City. I’d do my weird jig and sink back into the shadows. Whenever I hear this track, I get the feel of those first steps out as a boy in the grown-up world.

John Barry – “The Midnight Cowboy Theme”

I was a big film fan as a boy. Later, I’d hunt down the soundtracks, which took years for some. As I became more aware of the films that were having a big impact on me, I began seeing names repeated. John Barry was my first love in the soundtrack world. And the Midnight Cowboy theme was one of the first to really get me. It’s probably the moment, after punk, that I understood my path.

Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra – Nancy & Lee

An obvious choice now. But not so as a child. My Dad bought this album when it came out. So, it’s been with me most of my life. For a long, long time, it was played at least once a week. I’ve still got the original copy we had as a family. And it still gets me. I never lose that wonder of it.

Joy Division – Unknown Pleasures

I know, another obvious record. But I can’t imagine what I would be without it. I was too young for the Sex Pistols. And in retrospect, in 1979, they almost felt part of the world they wanted to smash. I love P.I.L.’s Metal Box. But when I heard Joy Division, it was the first music that felt really mine. I know Martin Hannett had so much input on this album. But the sound, music those four people made was incredible. And it’s still so amazing.

Janet Kay – “Silly Games”

The summer of 1979. I was in love with a girl called Lydia. We were still children. Kicking about on the council estate I grew up on. We didn’t even kiss. Just chased each other around outside the chip shop. And this song was stuck in my mind. Musically, that little keyboard melody has been the basis of all my own efforts in some way.

King Horror – Loch Ness Monster (Trojan Records compilation)

I left home when I was 17 and moved into a shared house with friends. The band I was in rehearsed in the cellar. If you ever saw a UK TV comedy program called The Young Ones, that’s exactly how our house was. Needless to say, there were a lot of late nights, my first use of substances. It lasted about a year and this Trojan compilation kind of soundtracked it. Listening to King Horror takes me straight back.

Broadcast – Work and Non-Work

It was the mid-1990’s. Tindersticks were a success, but I was still working in a record shop in London. Broadcast came down to play their first London show in a tiny club. It was packed. I was amazed. They had that retro vibe, but something else completely. I remember they kept swapping instruments. Something my punk heart hated. But my growing musicality loved. And I fell in love with them. It was such a loss when Trish died. A sadness which still gets me.

Ennio Morricone – Oceano

There’s so much music of his I could choose. There was a point in my life, after we had our first child, I changed. Perhaps for the first time, I really grew up. We were on a tour. A long tour. And Tindersticks were falling apart. I’d stopped drinking in bars all night after shows. I remember laying in my bunk on the bus, listening to this track on repeat. It felt like a kind of therapy. And it’s beautiful.

Plinth – Music for Smalls Lighthouse

This was my introduction to Clay Pipe records and the world of Frances Castle. And it was her artwork that caught me. I saw a review somewhere. The image took me to a world that felt familiar but also new. And musically, I loved it too. The whole feeling and connection to a place or moment in time renewed my love of music. And like a lighthouse, lit my way into making my own music. Something I’d always been afraid of.

Bob Marley and the Wailers – “Stir It Up”

I remember seeing this footage on The Old Grey Whistle Test. Music programs were few and far between growing up. There was Top of the Pops and a few other mainstream shows. The Old Grey Whistle Test was something else. A kind of real musicians show that had started to allow the music I loved in too. Of course I knew who Bob Marley was. My sister was a big fan. I was woken by Exodus every morning before school for quite a while as she got ready to go to work. But this was the first time I understood. Peter Tosh, such a cool dude. The whole band. I think that’s what got me. The whole band. Amazing.

O5-3 - the Philosopher Scientist!! Man who sent a lot of HR emails in his youth grew up and decided to actually do something about it. Started the Ethics Committee and psych department mostly-singlehandedly saved the Foundation after the Chaos Insurgency Shitstorm of 1924-1930. Holds the brain cell when Two doesn’t have it. Told You So. Known for throwing his support behind measures he’s previously opposed so that he and the Committee can get involved and carry it out in the least unethical way possible. Still in charge of scip and personnel welfare. Massive projection character

Has been better since joining the Foundation and has probably adjusted better than expected… though that may be because she’s, ironically enough, not fully cognizant of some of the shadier stuff that surrounded her promotion. O5-10 - the Archivist!! Paperwork cynicism lesbian. An enabler, and also a source of terrible good ideas. Rarely has hot takes, but when she does, they’re very spicy, and have led to some intense Council drama. Infamous for the Gatorade Rice incident. Cynical, deadpan, good at hiding the fact that she’s a massive instigator of Council hubris. Also lives at Site 01 and usually sends her body double to go outside. Runs infosec and archival duties, especially eschatological. A muse that’s always been moderately active but has recently been doing New Fun Things

O5-11 - the Bureaucrat!! Low self esteem, mostly unearned. A not-insignificant amount of pent-up rage, but appreciates most of the Council, expect for Five (hates) and Twelve (it’s complicated). Studied the blade. Usually overlooked, which suits him fine. Big [REDACTED]. Does antimemetics, expungement, and occult integration, and has several projects both of his own and enabled for his coworkers. Least developed muse.

O5-12 - the Physician!! Archetypal mad scientist. Dislikes processing things verbally. Just here to have a good time. Loves his job. Generally left to do his own thing, though by no means excluded from the Council’s shenanigans. Another well of hubris. Majored in w. Spearheads amnestic/mnestic etc. development, medication, and Safe-class research, though also has some specific projects with much higher stakes. Not a very developed muse, but a great one.

Ah! Well I’m into too many movies, but here are a few recommendations

The Bay (2012) is a found footage horror movie by the director of Rain Man that I’ve seen too many times (read: more than once.) It is trash but it is my trash; flesh eating isopods terrorizing a town in Maryland, a mix of terrible and transcendent acting, and weirdly scathing political commentary

Room 237 (2012) interviews four conspiracy theorists about The Shining (1980) at length. It’s a mix of actually useful film analysis and a proclamation that Stanley Kubrick faked the moon landing, and I love it not because I’m interested in the movie or any of these idiots, but because of the puzzles we’ll make out of anything

Modern Times (1936) is a slapstick comedy about a man and a woman just trying to make it through the end of the decade. It was the second Charlie Chaplin movie I ever saw growing up and still my favorite; I think it’s the most touchingly funny of his work

Submarine (2010) has what every bittersweet coming-of-age movie with nervous quirky boy protagonist wishes it had (Wes Anderson take notes and then fail to perform I hate you.) In all seriousness it’s a dramady with a simple plot that’s beautifully paced and filmed, just dive in

Dr Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love The Bomb (1964) is the only good Kubrick movie, and I’m not just saying that because I have a penchant for war satires. Okay well maybe a little, but the filming and dialogue is some of the best stuff we’ve got- made better by introspection of a wild ass time in U.S history (we all almost died!), and by Peter Sellers

El Laberinto del Fauno/Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)- a fairytale about a girl who goes to live with her mother and new stepfather at a vast country estate and, finding out that she’s a lost princess, sets about completing three tasks. This set in the regimental aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, so for every fantastic thing there’s an act of unspeakable sociopolitical or familial violence 

Panique au Village/A Town Called Panic (2009) is a very, very silly French stop motion animation picture about the misadventures of a plastic cowboy, indian, and horse and it makes me laugh every single time I watch it. Steven.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) is an adventure comedy about a kid and his foster father, escaping threats ranging from ninjas to grief in the New Zealand wilderness. It’s one of those movies that turns on a dime so quickly that by the end you’re not really sure what you were laughing at and what you were crying at, and that’s just fine

Monsters Vs Aliens (2009) is- do I even need to talk about this movie more than I have? It’s ridiculous, it’s stupid, the animation has aged poorly, it’s an American masterpiece, and I don’t think your parents liked me, and I think that jello gave me a fake phone number

Mystery Train (1989) is a triptych of three very different stories, all set over the course of one night in Memphis, connected at their ends. We’ve got tourists, criminals, a ghost, and the two best hotel workers in any movie ever. I like anthology movies but think they’re difficult to pull off; this one goes above and beyond

Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) is a masterpiece. The characters, the story, everything comes together to make something traditional and new and fun and intense and hilarious and heartbreaking. Also I know there’s no one way for animation to be, but. Fellas

Love and Saucers (2017) shares the story of David Huggins. You may have seen his paintings floating around as ‘wtf’ clickbait, as he claims to have lost his virginity to an alien at 17 and fathered hundreds of alien children, but the artist is a very sweet and complicated man just trying to get by in the world. I highly recommend listening to him even if, like me and most others, you don’t believe him 

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) appeals to a very weird form of nostalgia. The 70s update is better, but Cold War Edition is close to my heart as it was the first movie to ever frighten me. Melodramatic 50s acting mixed with everything moving so slowly is match made in heaven

The Death of Stalin (2017) is what it says on the tin; a movie about the questionable actions of Stalin’s Council of Ministers during and after his sudden death, and the dreadful repercussions of all of it. Oh, but it’s a comedy, we swear

Deathwatch (2002) is a direct-to-dvd horror movie set in the soggy monochrome trenches of WWI, where everything is either boring as hell or so over-the-top it’s ridiculous. I’m floored by how genuinely emotional most of the performances in this are, and I love horror movies where the setting is the villain rather than a boogie monster

Metropolis (1927) is a German expressionist film about a fucking dumbass!!!! The story is very standard (Aryan Christ Figure Hero meets The Girl One and they save humanity with their purity), but there’s also scheming with butlers, mommy-issues robot, the danse macabre, and too much eye makeup

The World’s End (2014) is a movie about self harm, facing change, growing up, and the power of friendship. It is set during a pub crawl, and is really just five men and Rosamund Pike screaming about lintels and saying fuck
