Anonymous: can we get a part to of the lawyer gf and their actual date?
“Look who’s late this time.” Jack stood to greet you as you walked over to the table, giving you a kiss on the cheek. You looked at your watch to see it was 8:01; you were technically one minute late.
“You’re hilarious. How was your day?” You looked up at Jack after you placed your purse on the empty neighboring chair. His gaze was already fixed on you, his blue eyes glistening in the candlelight. You broke eye contact, your cheeks blushing.
“Sorry, I just couldn’t stop thinking about how beautiful you looked.”
“Does that line usually work for the girls you date?”
“It depends. Did it work on you?”
“Nope.” You popped the ‘p’ as you opened the menu. Jack’s face fell. You were really difficult to read. His usual tricks weren’t working with you at all. He cleared his throat while he thought of a way to change the conversation.
“How long have you been practicing law?”
“Five years. I started in criminal law, and moved to immigration when I moved here.”
“Really, why?”
You looked up at him to see that you had his full attention. It was unusual for a man to take more than five minutes of interest in your career. You set your menu down.
“My parents immigrated from Eastern Europe before I was born. They really struggled to find jobs and provide for my family. The system just made it damn near impossible for them to become a part of a country they worked so hard to get to. They lived here for 20 years before they eventually had to go back, and I spent a lot of my adult life without my parents. It was really hard on me and I’d do anything to prevent that from happening to another family.”
“Wow, that’s really admirable, Y/N.”
“Thanks. Why did you decide to get into music?”
“Well, it’s not nearly as inspiring as your story, but I guess I’ve just always loved music, since I was a kid, and I just never saw myself doing something else.” He was expecting you to laugh at him, but instead you gave him a soft smile.
“I listened to JACKMAN. I really liked it. It was raw, honest. My office is getting tired of me playing 'They Don’t Love It’ on repeat.”
Jack smiled wide, his heart pounding at the thought of you loving his music. “Wait, you listen to my music?”
You blushed again, this time holding eye contact. “Why is that surprising?”
“I don’t know. You seem like someone who listens to classical music, or Taylor Swift.”
“Wow, way to hurl that insult! You obviously haven’t listened to 'Midnights’, there are no skips on that album. I’ll also have you know, I am a huge rap fan.” You leaned into the table. “Drake is rap, right?”
Jack chuckled, “yes, Drake is definitely rap.”

Do You Are To Choose A Bankruptcy Lawyer?
Ask personal injury lawyers why she chose to work on Social Security disability cases. The answer to this question is very telling. For me, helping clients get their disability benefits is one of the greatest joys in practicing law. I know that my staff and I can make a difference in our clients' lives. Clients come into my office troubled, frustrated, worried and in pain. We work through the process together and there is no better feeling than calling a client to report that they have been approved for Social Security disability benefits. The lawyer will handle all the legal consultation, documentation, and will represent you in all legal matters. Make sure that your lawyer provides you with updated paperwork so that you can monitor the status of your immigration visa. Acquiring new citizenship may not be easy but you can encounter fewer problems by working with a reputable lawyer. Aside from handling this kind of issue, the lawyer may also handle child adoption from other countries, migration to another country, and other relevant issues. You will need all the luck and expertise of the cheap lawyers near me to get the best results. The whole purpose of taking this test is to make sure that only the people who are really struggling are getting the financial help they need. This new law also has new credit counseling and money management classes. This is a great benefit because these classes will teach people how to properly build their credit and prevent future hardships. A third approach is to look them up on the State Bar website. Ever state has one and most list the disciplinary record of each attorney. If you see a number of actions, you can rest assured other clients have had problems and you might want to avoid the attorney in question. For the area of expertise, you would want to have a family law expert on your side. If your divorce lawyer is an expert on family law, he / she will be able to defend your case thoroughly. He / she will be able to guide you with regards to child custody, child support, and alimony issues. After you have established your lawyer's expertise in this area, determine his years of practice in this area. Ask the lawyer to talk about the last divorce case he represented. Years of experience are really very important alongside with the area of expertise. If the lawyer has only practiced family law for a year, you may have doubts just then. You'll feel safer with a divorce lawyer who's had years of experience in his belt. You will have to learn legal research online. These days most legal research is not at the law library the way it used to be. Instead you have to know how to do online research fast and effective. The best thing to do when you enter any program is to find a job in a law office even if you simply answer the phone. Unfortunately, more people have filed bankruptcy in 2009 than in past years and it shall only increase as we approach 2010. Thus, ask around. Find out who has handled bankruptcy related issues amongst your relatives, friends and loved ones. Ask around your area. For dealing with bankruptcy is difficult and you do not want to make it worse on your family by choosing a lawyer who is not an expert in the field. You need someone with a reputable history of success in handling it with ease. Questioning those you know in similar scenarios is a great way to find out about an attorney before hiring him/her. Does the lawyer charge hourly, a flat rate, or a contingency fee? How much is it? The fees can vary substantially depending on a lawyer's experience, location of practice, and areas of practice. Usually a lawyer's hourly cost can range from $150 - $350 per hour. Flat fees are are widely dependent on the nature of a case. Simple divorces, minor criminal cases, and bankruptcies can range from $400 and up. Contingency cases are common in personal injury cases and are often 33% of the recovered amount, but they can range from 25% - 40%.

More on the traitor
Trump started the January 6/2021 insurrection. There is a lot to say about it but I'll brief. Trump wanted to stay in power. He wanted to be a dictator. His followers did his biddening and a lot of them are paying for it which they should! Hope Trump gets the book thrown at him when and if he ever goes to trial for it! Truly the worst thing he did as president. Some of his lawyers and followesr still call him President! He isn't and should not be! I don't even want to refer to him as A former president! He cheated on all his wives. Melonia, I believe, married him for money. She hated being the First Lady and purposly did a horrible job at it! Doesn't live in the same house as Trump. She is rarely seen with him! Melonia hates him! Loves their son Barron and she will do everything she can to make sure Baron is not screwed over by Trump! Trump is a cult leader of his followers and supporters! I have family members who adore Trump! It makes me sick! Trump tried to flush documents down White House toilets! He says he is 6 ' 3 and weighs only 215! He's more like 315! He is a slob! Cheats at gokf, every time he p!ays! Tried to cheat as golf the time he played Tiger Woods! Tiger caught him! Created space force and I have no idea what they do or if this is a real thing ! Rarely wire A mask during the pandemic. Hated wearing be mask because bit messed up his orange make up! Said he would get rid of Obama care! It never happened and he said his plan would be bigger and better! I'm still waiting! Wears adult diapers. Can't control his bowels because if his drug use in the 1980s! There is videos of the stinky guy farting and you can see people like Mike Pence, have that face of someone smelling A fart! With the border, Trump said he built A whole wall and nobody could get through or over it in truth Trump built only 50 miles of the wall and most of it was replacing old parts of the wall. Trump had used cheap martial. Less then a year the wall was falling apart ! In some parts the walk was rotting away! Some spots were cut through, multiple tines, even after being fixed! The material was cheap and a person could buy cheap tools to get through the fence! Oh brother! Trumpnhad more illegal immigrants cross the border then any modern president in history! Same with drugs! Trump has no idea that drugs come from all over the world! Not all gets in the country! Thanks to border patrol and drug agents at airports. For example! Not all drugs come from Mexico! Same with illegal immigrants! There are some who try to get in the States, by trying to use illegal papers! Those people are sent back to their country, right away! Agents go through so much stuff and do find lots of illegal drugs! Don't forget, there are a lot of people who make illegal drugs in drug houses! Trump banned Muslims from entering the United States! He doesn't believe in global warming! He told California people to rake their forests, after he refused to send money to California after terrible fires! Went to Puerto Rico after a hurricane and threw people paper towels! Puerto Rico suffered badly after a hurricane and suffered more because Trump refuse to send them aid money! He took a sharper to a map directing a hurricane towards Alabama when it wasn't going that way! Scaring the crap out of Alabama residents! Trump loved to say when a hurricane was going to happen, he would be the wetest Hurricane we'd ever seen! Said he never heard the word caravan until one was heading to the States from Central and Southern America! Then he said their was criminals and terrorists in the middle of the caravan! Totaly untrue! Said he would never have a company leave the USA to go to another country! Bull! Said that companies were coming back to the USA after he did the Chinese tariff deal! Not! Hates wind bines because a wind farm was built near one of his golf courses and lowered the property value! Unbelievable! It makes me sick knowing, there are people can't take off the blinders to see the truth will vote for Trump for President! For me it's Biden all the way!

Bavarian Law A Historical and Legal Overview
Bavaria, a region steeped in history and tradition, has a legal system that reflects its rich cultural heritage and unique identity within Germany. Bavarian law, while integrated into the broader German legal framework, exhibits certain distinctive characteristics that set it apart. This article provides a brief overview of Bavarian law, exploring its historical roots and key features.
Tumblr media
Historical Background:
Bavaria's legal system has evolved over centuries, shaped by the region's complex history. From the early medieval period, Bavaria developed its own legal traditions, influenced by both Roman and Germanic legal principles. The emergence of the Duchy of Bavaria in the 6th century marked a crucial point in the region's legal development. Over time, the legal landscape witnessed changes under various rulers, including the Wittelsbach dynasty, which significantly impacted the legal norms in Bavaria.
Distinctive Features of Bavarian Law:
One of the notable aspects of Bavarian law is its incorporation of local customs and traditions. Bavaria, with its diverse cultural communities, has historically allowed for a certain degree of legal autonomy at the local level. This decentralized approach has led to the preservation of unique legal practices in different parts of Bavaria.
Additionally, Bavaria has a tradition of emphasizing individual freedoms and rights. The region has produced legal scholars who have contributed to the development of constitutional law and the protection of individual liberties. This commitment to personal freedoms is reflected in Bavaria's legal codes and judicial decisions.
Legal System Integration:
While Bavaria has distinctive legal elements, it is important to note that it is an integral part of the German legal system. The Federal Republic of Germany has a unified legal framework, and Bavarian law operates within this broader context. The German Basic Law, the country's constitution, provides the foundation for legal norms, and Bavaria adheres to these principles while preserving its own legal identity.
Bavarian Legal Codes:
Bavaria has its own legal codes that govern various aspects of civil, criminal, and administrative law. These codes are in harmony with the German legal system but may include provisions specific to Bavarian circumstances. For instance, family law in Bavaria may account for local customs related to marriage and inheritance.
Legal Institutions:
Bavaria boasts a well-established legal infrastructure, with its own courts and administrative bodies. Munich, the capital of Bavaria, is home to the Bavarian State Ministry of Justice, overseeing legal matters within the region. Local courts play a crucial role in administering justice, and Bavaria has a tradition of maintaining a robust judiciary to uphold the rule of law.
Challenges and Contemporary Developments:
In recent years, Bavaria has faced challenges in reconciling its traditional legal identity with the demands of a modern, interconnected world. Globalization and the harmonization of European legal norms have required adjustments in Bavarian law to align with broader international standards.
Moreover, issues such as immigration and cultural diversity have prompted discussions about adapting legal frameworks to accommodate a changing demographic landscape. Bavaria continues to navigate these challenges while striving to maintain its historical legal character.
Bavarian law stands as a testament to the region's rich history and cultural diversity. While deeply rooted in tradition, it has adapted to the demands of the contemporary legal landscape. Bavaria's legal system, with its unique features and integration into the broader German framework, reflects a harmonious blend of historical continuity and adaptability to the evolving needs of society.

AN URBIS STORY
I had finished teaching Ayesha maths. I love my chosen profession of teaching though painting is my first love and have always had an exceptionally high examination pass rate where ever or what ever I am teaching. I also love all my pupils without exception. In my life, I have had to do quite a few jobs I have hated whilst my children were small, so gave up a lot to become qualified. Anyway, sometimes after this particular lesson I would wander up to visit one of my sons who lived near by. He had had the most unfortunate marriage and divorce imaginable and was only just getting over it all. Also he has become a hermit but chattered like a demented monkey if I or his brother visited. I listened and supped tea till nearly nine o’clock. It was time to go. I am a small, little lady and at sixty not too strong anymore. I love life so I take care. Now my son’s neighbour is (we think) a little touched in the head. He is a Pakistani, an import. An import is what young pakistanis in London call brand new immigrants. He yells, screams, fumes and shouts through every day, not a nice variation of that country. I should add, I lived in that country some years ago and can still manage a few words of Urdu. Goodbye kisses over, I walked down the dark alleyway separating the two houses..only to go flying, crash into one of the walls on either side of the path and went out cold..only to wake up to the worst pain in my head ever. I rolled over onto my back to an awful pain in my arm, later to find that the socket was broken in several places. I lay there, weakly calling for help in the dark unfortunately lying in a puddle. Eventually two white guys passing by heard me and came to the rescue, knocked to fetch my son out and an ambulance, tried to make me as comfortable as possible and removed the brick the neighbour had put in the middle of the path at the end of the alleyway, over which I had tripped. When the ambulance men were trying to lift me onto the trolley from the floor, an apparition in black appeared. Without asking what had happened she asked to be let by, stepping over me to do so to join her husband within. Ah yes, the point of the story, as I came round I heard the word ‘Urbis’. It was on a sound thrower.
footnote: the accident lawyer will not sue. Pakistanis are notorious for lying under oath and not paying anyway. So what does that mean? They can do as they please. No wonder they have got to the point of throwing bombs about when displeased…....... yet the same country treated us worse than the most evil criminals. The C.I.D called monthly at my father’s home for over thirty years (Ukrainian P.O.W. invited to stay, hard-working, honest and writer).

How to Find an Immigration Agent Near Me
Tumblr media
Whether you are planning to go to the United States to work or study, or are simply seeking a better environment, immigration agent near me laws are in place to protect you. But it can be tricky to navigate the system, and you should always keep your rights in mind. A skilled immigration lawyer can help you navigate the system and protect you from deportation.
The Department of Homeland Security reported that in 2009, 1.1 million foreigners received lawful permanent residence. Although immigrants may be eager to gain citizenship, they need to take the proper steps to ensure they do so properly.
One of the most important things you can do is to keep an eye out for scams. The Federal Trade Commission provides multilingual resources for fighting notario fraud, and you can also check with the State Bar to ensure your attorney is licensed to practice law in the state in which you are located.
You should also be aware of your rights if you are stopped by police. If an officer asks you to sign something, do not. You also have the right to request an interpreter. It is also a good idea to write down any pertinent information about the officers.
If you are stopped by the Border Patrol, you may be asked about your top immigration consultants status. If you are stopped in a car, you may be asked to show your passport and driver's license. You have the right to refuse the search of your car, and you have the right to ask to be allowed to leave if you are free.
It is also a good idea to carry a copy of your immigration papers, or to be prepared to show your immigration documents in the event you are arrested. You may be asked to provide other information, however, so make sure you are not obstructing the police. You may also be asked to provide information about a criminal conviction that may affect your immigration status.
There are also other things to know about immigration consultants laws. The first is that you should never provide false information to an immigration officer. If you are stopped by an agent, you should ask for an interpreter and tell them that you want to consult with a lawyer. Also, you should only be asked to answer questions about your immigration status, in the presence of your attorney. This may sound simple, but the wrong answer could cause a delay in your case.
There are also more complex matters to discuss. For example, if you are married to a U.S. citizen, you may be able to maintain your legal status if you were married in the U.S., and you can also keep your legal status if you are abused or mistreated as a foreigner.
The immigration system is complex, and there are many questions to ask about your rights. A skilled immigration lawyer can help you navigate this complex system and protect you from deportation. To know more information visit at www.epaglobal.com.

Donald Trumps racism through the years
Since there's always Trump supporters arguing on my post, I thought I’d make a nice post they'd be able to understand :)
1973: The US department of Justice sued the Trump Management Corporation for violating the Fair Housing act. Evidence was found that Trump had lied to black tenants about available apartments and refused to rent to black tenants.
1980s: According to a former employee, Trump would have all the black people in the casino ordered off the floor when Ivana and himself came to visit. These black employees would be moved to the back. In 1992 a $200,000 fine was issued towards the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino for moving black men and women off tables. This was to accommodate a gamblers views and prejudices.
1989: During the infamous Central Park Five case, Trump ran an ad in a local paper stating they needed to “bring the death penalty back.” Even after the release of all five males, a settlement of $41 million paid by the city and DNA evidence proving they could not be guilty of this crime, Trump still believed they were guilty as late as October 2016. Oh, did I mention? Four of these teenagers were black and the fifth was latino.
1991: A former president of Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, John O’Donnell, quoted Trumps comments on a black accountant. “Black guys counting my money! I hate it. The only kind of people I want counting my money are short guys that wear yarmulkes every day. … I think that the guy is lazy. And it’s probably not his fault, because laziness is a trait in blacks. It really is, I believe that. It’s not anything they can control.” Later on, Trump claimed “the stuff O’Donnell wrote about me is probably true,” while doing an interview for Playboy in 1977.
1993: In a confessional testimony, Trump stated he didn't think some Native American reservations should be allowed to operate casinos as “they don't look like Indians to me.” In 2000, Trump secretly ran a series of ads after the St. Regis Mohawk tribe proposed a casino that he deemed to be a direct financial threat to his own establishments in Atlantic City. In these ads, Trump suggested the tribe had a “record of criminal activity (that) is well documented.”
2005: After season two of Apprentice where Trump famously fired Kevin Allen, a black man, for seemingly being too educated, Trump publicly pitched the idea for what was essentially The Apprentice: White people vs black people.
2010: “Ground Zero Mosque” caused a lot of controversy during the year of 2010. This was a plan to build a Muslim community centre in Lower Manhattan, this being near the area of the 9/11 attacks in 2001. Trump offered to buy out one of the investors, claiming that this plan was insensitive and publicly opposed to the project. Later, on The Late Show with David Letterman, Trump argued his point further and said, “Well, somebody’s blowing us up. Somebody’s blowing up buildings, and somebody’s doing lots of bad stuff.”
2011: Trump, among others, played a huge role in pushing the false rumours that Obama, the first black president, was not born in the United States and still reportedly continues to push and believe this theory in private despite Obama releasing his birth certificate. In the same year, Trump also argued that Obama wasn't a good enough student for Columbia or Harvard Law school to accept him. “I heard he was a terrible student. Terrible. How does a bad student go to Columbia and then to Harvard?”
2015: When Trump started his campaign in 2015, it was largely focused around his desire and promise to build a wall to keep Mexican immigrants out of the United States and he called Mexican immigrants “rapists” and that they were “bringing drugs” and “bringing crime” to the United States.
Also in 2015: During his time as a candidate 2015, Trump called for a ban on all Muslims coming into the US. Eventually, his administration did implement a watered down version of this policy.
2016: Judge Gonzalo Curiel was overseeing the Trump University lawsuit in 2016 when Trump argued he should step down from the case. This was due to his Mexican heritage and his membership in a Latino lawyers association.
Also in 2016: “You’re living in poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs, 58 percent of your youth is unemployed. What the hell do you have to lose?” Trump said as he tried to get black voters on his side.
During this year, he also tweeted a picture of Hillary Clinton in front of a pile of money and a Jewish Star of David that said “Most corrupt candidate ever!” Despite the obviously anti-semitic imagery, Trump insisted the star was a sheriffs badge and maintained his campaign should not have deleted it.
He has repeatedly referred to Elizabeth Warren as “Pocahontas;” using her controversial and then walked back claims that she had Native American heritage as a punchline.
2017: Trump attacked NFL players who chose to take the knee during the national anthem numerous times.
Also in 2017: Following the white supremacist protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, Trump claimed “both sides” were to blame for the violence and chaos that occurred. This suggests that the counter protestors protesting against racism and white supremacy were morally equivalent to the white supremacist protestors. He also claimed there were “some very fine people” among the white supremacists. White nationalist, Richard Spencer praised Trump for defending the truth.
Also in 2017: Trump reportedly claimed everyone who came to the US from Haiti “all have AIDS” and that people who came from Nigeria to the US “would never go back to their huts.” The following year (2018), Trump reportedly asked “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” He has since denied these comments but some senators attending the same meeting did claim this happened.
2019: Trump mocked Elizabeth Warren and her presidential campaign, calling her Pocahontas again in a 2019 tweet before adding “See you on the campaign TRAIL, Liz!” The capitalisation of “Trail” is seemingly a reference to the Trail of Tears. This was a horrific ethnic cleansing of the Native Americans where they were forcibly relocated. This caused thousands of deaths.
Also in 2019: Trump took to twitter to tweet that several black and brown members of Congress: Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), are from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe” and that they should “go back” to said countries. Three of the four members of Congress targeted by Trump were, in fact, born in the US.
2020: Trump has referred to COVID-19 as the “Chinese virus” and “kung flu.” This is highly offensive and large numbers of Asian Americans have reported hateful incidents targeting them due to the virus.
Also in 2020: Trump suggested that Kamala Harris, a black and south asian woman, “doesn't meet the requirements” to be Vice President.
Trump has always been slow to condemn white supremacists who endorse him and during his 2016 campaign he retweeted multiple tweets from Neo-Nazis and white supremacists.
This is not even the full list and the article itself states its not a comprehensive list. But it does speak to his pattern of racism and bigotry. The article this list is from is linked below, I’d recommend everyone to read it and educate yourself using other resources as well. This isn't even the tip of the iceberg. I will also be making a post of his inappropriate, problematic and vile behaviour towards women.

The $50 billion race to save America’s renters from eviction (Washington Post) The Biden administration again extended a federal moratorium on evictions last week, but conflicting court rulings on whether the ban is legal, plus the difficulty of rolling out nearly $50 billion in federal aid, means the country’s reckoning with its eviction crisis may come sooner than expected. The year-old federal moratorium—which has now been extended through June 30—has probably kept hundreds of thousands or millions of people from being evicted from their apartments and homes. More than 10 million Americans are behind on rent, according to Moody’s, easily topping the 7 million who lost their homes to foreclosure in the 2008 housing bust. Despite the unprecedented federal effort to protect tenants, landlords have been chipping away at the moratorium in court. Treasury Department officials have been armed with nearly $50 billion in emergency aid for renters who have fallen behind, and are racing to distribute it through hundreds of state, local and tribal housing agencies, some of which have not created programs yet. The idea is to get the money to renters before courts nationwide begin processing evictions again.
A court filing says parents of 445 separated migrant children still have not been found. (NYT) The parents of 61 migrant children who were separated from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border by the Trump administration have been located since February, but lawyers still cannot find the parents of 445 children, according to a court filing on Wednesday. In the filing, the Justice Department and the American Civil Liberties Union indicated slow progress in the ongoing effort to reunite families that were affected by a policy to prosecute all undocumented immigrants in the United States, even if it meant separating children from their parents. Of the 445 remaining children, a majority are believed to have parents who were deported, while more than 100 children are believed to have parents currently in the United States, according to the court filing. The government has yet to provide contact information that would help locate the families of more than a dozen children.
N Ireland leaders call for calm after night of rioting (AP) Rioters set a hijacked bus on fire and hurled gasoline bombs at police in Belfast in at least the fourth night of serious violence in a week in Northern Ireland, where Brexit has unsettled an uneasy political balance. Youths threw projectiles and petrol bombs at police on Wednesday night in the Protestant Shankill Road area, while rioters lobbed bricks, fireworks and petrol bombs in both directions over the concrete “peace wall” separating the Shankill Road from a neighboring Irish nationalist area. Police Service of Northern Ireland Assistant Chief Constable Jonathan Roberts said several hundred people gathered on both sides of a gate in the wall, where “crowds ... were committing serious criminal offenses, both attacking police and attacking each other.” He said a total of 55 police officers have been injured over several nights of disorder. The recent violence, largely in pro-British loyalist areas, has flared amid rising tensions over post-Brexit trade rules for Northern Ireland and worsening relations between the parties in the Protestant-Catholic power-sharing Belfast government.
Biden seems ready to extend US troop presence in Afghanistan (AP) Without coming right out and saying it, President Joe Biden seems ready to let lapse a May 1 deadline for completing a withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan. Orderly withdrawals take time, and Biden is running out of it. Biden has inched so close to the deadline that his indecision amounts almost to a decision to put off, at least for a number of months, a pullout of the remaining 2,500 troops and continue supporting the Afghan military at the risk of a Taliban backlash. Removing all of the troops and their equipment in the next three weeks—along with coalition partners who can’t get out on their own—would be difficult logistically, as Biden himself suggested in late March. “It’s going to be hard to meet the May 1 deadline,” he said. “Just in terms of tactical reasons, it’s hard to get those troops out.” Tellingly, he added, “And if we leave, we’re going to do so in a safe and orderly way.”
One in six Latin American youths left work since pandemic’s start (Reuters) Across Latin America and the Caribbean, one in every six people aged 18 to 29 has left work since the coronavirus pandemic began, forcing many to abandon their studies, a report said on Thursday. The precariousness of employment for young people rose across the region, according to an investigation by Canadian charity Cuso International based on data from a U.N. commission and a poll by the International Labour Organization. “It’s extremely difficult for young people to access the labor market due to issues around specialization, lower wages, and poverty,” the advocacy group’s Colombia director Alejandro Matos told Reuters. More than half of those who stopped working since the start of the pandemic were let go by their employers, the report said, while others saw their businesses close and those employed in the informal sector could not work due to lockdowns.
Myanmar ambassador in London locked out of embassy after speaking out against military (Washington Post) Myanmar’s ambassador to Britain, who has spoken out again the military coup in his country, said he was barred from the embassy in London on Wednesday by officials loyal to the military junta. “They are refusing to let me inside,” Kyaw Zwar Minn told the Telegraph. “They said they received instruction from the capital, so they are not going to let me in.” Kyaw Zwar Minn told the British newspaper that when he left the embassy during the day, colleagues and officials linked to the military stormed the premises and kept him from reentering that evening. In early March, the ambassador, a former military colonel, spoke out against the military’s detention of the former British colony’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi, drawing criticism from the junta that had orchestrated her ouster and praise from the British government for his “courage.” The London-based ambassador was recalled, according to Myanmar state television, after he posted a statement on the embassy’s Facebook page demanding “the release of State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and President U Win Myint,” but he did not return to Myanmar.
Merkel tells Putin to pull back troops as Kremlin accuses Ukraine of provocations (Reuters) German Chancellor Angela Merkel told Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday to pull back the Kremlin’s military buildup near the border with Ukraine, while he in turn accused Kyiv of “provocative actions” in the conflict region. Ukraine has raised the alarm over an increase in Russian forces near its eastern border as violence has risen along the line of contact separating its troops from Russia-backed separatists in its Donbass region. Russia has said its forces pose no threat and were defensive, but that they would stay there as long as Moscow saw fit. A senior Kremlin official said on Thursday that Moscow could under certain circumstances be forced to defend its citizens in Donbass and that major hostilities could mark the beginning of the end of Ukraine as a country.
China builds advanced weapons systems using American chip technology (Washington Post) In a secretive military facility in southwest China, a supercomputer whirs away, simulating the heat and drag on hypersonic vehicles speeding through the atmosphere—missiles that could one day be aimed at a U.S. aircraft carrier or Taiwan, according to former U.S. officials and Western analysts. The computer is powered by tiny chips designed by a Chinese firm called Phytium Technology using American software and built in the world’s most advanced chip factory in Taiwan, which hums with American precision machinery, say the analysts. Phytium portrays itself as a commercial company aspiring to become a global chip giant like Intel. It does not publicize its connections to the research arms of the People’s Liberation Army. The hypersonic test facility is located at the China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center (CARDC), which also obscures its military connections though it is run by a PLA major general, according to public documents, and the former officials and analysts, many of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive matter. Phytium’s partnership with CARDC offers a prime example of how China is quietly harnessing civilian technologies for strategic military purposes—with the help of American technology. The trade is not illegal but is a vital link in a global high-tech supply chain that is difficult to regulate because the same computer chips that could be used for a commercial data center can power a military supercomputer.
Indonesia landslides death toll rises to 140, dozens missing (AP) The death toll from mudslides in eastern Indonesia has risen to 140 with dozens still missing, officials said Wednesday, as rain continued to pound the region and hamper the search. East Flores district on Adonara island suffered the highest losses with 67 bodies recovered so far and six missing. Mud tumbled down from surrounding hills early on Sunday, catching people at sleep. Some were swept away by flash floods after overnight rains caused rivers to burst their banks. On nearby Lembata island, the downpour triggered by Tropical Cyclone Seroja sent solidified lava from a volcanic eruption in November to crash down on more than a dozen villages, killing at least 32 and leaving 35 unaccounted for, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency.
Reversing Trump, Biden Restores Aid to Palestinians (NYT) The Biden administration announced on Wednesday that it would restore hundreds of millions of dollars in American aid to Palestinians, its strongest move yet to reverse President Donald J. Trump’s policy on the protracted Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The package, which gives at least $235 million in assistance to Palestinians, will go to humanitarian, economic, development and security efforts in the region, and is part of the administration’s attempt to rehabilitate U.S. relations with Palestinians, which effectively stopped when Mr. Trump was in office. The restoration of aid amounted to the most direct repudiation so far of Mr. Trump’s tilt toward Israel in its decades-old conflict with the Palestinian population in Israeli-controlled territories.
Royal rift ends (NYT) Jordan’s King Abdullah II said on Wednesday that the “discord” that has roiled the kingdom for days has “been stopped,” signaling a resolution to a rare royal rift that resulted in the house arrest of Prince Hamzah bin Hussein, the former crown prince, and the detention of several Jordanian officials who were accused of plotting a foreign-backed coup against the monarchy.
Conflict and COVID driving record hunger in DR Congo, warns UN (Al Jazeera) A record 27.3 million people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are facing acute hunger, one-third of the violence-wracked Central African country’s population, largely because of conflict and the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the United Nations has warned. The DRC is “home to the highest number of people in urgent need of food security assistance in the world,” the World Food Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organization said on Tuesday in a joint statement, describing the scale of the crisis as “staggering”. “For the first time ever we were able to analyse the vast majority of the population, and this has helped us to come closer to the true picture of the staggering scale of food insecurity in the DRC,” Peter Musoko, WFP’s representative in the country, said. “This country should be able to feed its population and export a surplus. We cannot have children going to bed hungry and families skipping meals for an entire day,” he said.
Beware The Carpet Cleaner (The Guardian) Parkinson’s disease is the fastest-growing neurological disorder in the world, and the US is experiencing an explosion of cases. In the last decade, the number of Parkinson’s cases in America has increased 35%, and a neurologist at the University of Rochester Medical Center thinks over the next 25 years it will double again. Most cases of the disease are considered idiopathic—without a clear cause. But researchers now believe one factor is environmental exposure to trichloroethylene (TCE), a chemical compound used in industrial degreasing, dry-cleaning, and household products like some shoe polishes and carpet cleaners. TCE is a carcinogen already linked to renal cell carcinoma, cancers of the cervix, liver, biliary passages, lymphatic system and male breast tissue, fetal cardiac defects, and more. Several studies point to a link between Parkinson’s and workplace exposure to TCE. The US Labor Department issued guidance on TCE saying exposures to carbon disulfide (CS2) and TCE are presumed to “cause, contribute or aggravate Parkinsonism.”
‘Tantalizing’ results of 2 experiments defy physics rulebook (AP) Preliminary results from two experiments suggest something could be wrong with the basic way physicists think the universe works, a prospect that has the field of particle physics both baffled and thrilled. Tiny particles called muons aren’t quite doing what is expected of them in two different long-running experiments in the United States and Europe. The confounding results—if proven right—reveal major problems with the rulebook physicists use to describe and understand how the universe works at the subatomic level. “We think we might be swimming in a sea of background particles all the time that just haven’t been directly discovered,” Fermilab experiment co-chief scientist Chris Polly said in a press conference. “There might be monsters we haven’t yet imagined that are emerging from the vacuum interacting with our muons and this gives us a window into seeing them.” If confirmed, the U.S. results would be the biggest finding in the bizarre world of subatomic particles in nearly 10 years, since the discovery of the Higgs boson, often called the “God particle,” said Aida El-Khadra of the University of Illinois, who works on theoretical physics for the Fermilab experiment.
Unlikely chauffeur (Foreign Policy) Kevin Rudd is best known as a former Australian prime minister. Last Tuesday night in Queensland, he was mistaken for an Uber driver. The former Labor party leader became an unlikely chauffeur when a group of revelers—described as “tipsy” by Rudd’s daughter—piled into his car as he sought parking at a local restaurant. Rudd obliged the passengers, reportedly driving half the journey to the town’s main drag before being recognized by his would-be customers. “Four young Melburnians getting drenched in a Queensland subtropical downpour at Noosa last night with no Uber in sight … So what’s a man to do?” Rudd later wrote on Twitter.
