The Thorn-scrub: Arizona’s Macrocosmic Ecosystem

Deserts are typically understood as arid environments that receive little to no rainfall per year. While most are put off by this image, deserts are not identical.

A thorn-scrub is actually a hybridized ecosystem of a desert and a tropical rainforest birthed out of human contact dating back to the Stone Age. Thorn-scrubs are Arizona’s version of New York’s deciduous forests; losing its leaves a certain point and regaining them by the next spring—but with plenty of cacti. This ecosystem is so well-adapted that it allures visitors from all over the world, even attracting prospective guests seeking permanent residency. The Sonoran Desert is the unfiltered and unadulterated origin of hipster culture’s obsession with semi-desert plants (such as succulents) as home décor in nature-derived urban areas. With its collection of giant cacti species such as the renowned Saguaro, Organ pipe, and Senita, the Sonoran Desert is becoming an increasingly popular hub for people seeking to utilize its natural, ornamental forefront as a living space and therapeutic haven.

That was reminding me of this is a patio we designed. We shot this with @subzeroandwolf and looking at this now I wish I could spend the holiday here! // The giant door on the left is @weathershield patio door and it was 20 feet long. And it was the anchor of the entire space. Two more giant areas were a part of this design - a living room and kitchen - slide to see the results. This reminds me how much I love to design and work with spaces. // Of special note is the custom tile floor @jeffreycourtinc from Chapter 8 Europa Arte(™) . It’s one of our favorites because of the #Urbano pattern and neutral colorway goes with everything from mod to traditional. Today’s Inspiration - Hot Glass Custom Bar. Eli, Dave... this is all us to collaborate on together. To any who see this, here is my design plan. This is or will be an incredible custom bar design, one where Chihuly styled hot glass is the main feature. Thank you Dale for the term. I did not design in any cabinetry, or the walls, or any lighting, it is not necessary just yet. Our focus is the glass as glass artists. What we have is custom long-pull colored reeds of awesomeness... Hot Glass!!! I, we will custom cut these reeds around premium crystal Starphire glass shelves giving the appearance of the reeds going through the glass shelves. The surround is open for interpretation. The cabinetry will be premium, nothing less, the walls the same. Mirror backed,... maybe??? The lighting... Kick A@%!!! Strong down lighting, possible up lighting through the reeds... shelf lighting??? Anything is possible! My custom interior design featured in the book, "Love Your Home!" I love the story behind this makeover. My client had moved into this home and lived with furniture she hated for 17 years. She finally decided it was time to get what she wanted, and hired me to help her. She knew she wanted a glamorous, yet relaxing space. Her favorite color is purple. The key pieces that inspired the entire design were the fabulous art piece of a lady shrouded in sheer fabric and the lustrous shag rug. The dove grey paint and wood floors added a touch of coolness, and the contemporary crystal chandelier was the perfect addition of bling.
