Just out from Ab irato, Un carnet d'excursion presents two collaborations between its three poet-artists: Jaques Abeille, and Anne-Marie and Jean-Pierre Guillon. The book opens with Abeille’s prose poem “Un carnet d’excursion” (“a travel notebook”) from the early 1970s accompanied by ink drawings by Anne-Marie Guillon from the same period. In the "Manuel de vitrier" (glazier's manual), Jacques Abeille and Jean-Pierre Guillon play a kind of telephone game in which one sends a drawing to the other to which the recipient replies with a drawing in turn and so on until they completed a suite of 14 pieces, a dialogue in images. [text in French]
Since little is available in English on the authors, below are a few notes:
Jacques Abeille introduced himself to the surrealist group in Paris through a response to the 1964 survey on erotic representations in La Brèche #7. In 1966, after meeting André and Georges Mimiague, he joined the brothers in founding the group Parapluycha in 1966 in Bourdeaux. He remained active after the dissolution of the Paris group, responding to Vincent Bounoure's 1969 enquête "Rien ou quoi?" and subsequently appearing in Gradiva, the Bulletin de Liaison Surréaliste (BLS), Surréalisme, Brumes Blondes, and Ce Qui Sera. His major work le Cycle des Contrées, a series of labyrinthine novels exploring imaginary lands, began with Le Jardin statuaire in 1982 and continued through seven more titles over the next 30 years. As Abeille notes, writing for him is a state of alienation that leads him by the thread of the pen. Alongside these works, Abeille published a number of erotic tales as Leo Berthe (who also appears as a character in the Cycle) and prior to that deployed Meville’s Bartleby as pseudonym for his poetic story La Crépusculaire (1971).
Anne-Marie Guillon created surrealist compositions in oils, ink, lace, and patterned seashells, appearing in the Bulletin de Liaison Surréaliste and elsewhere (four of which may be seen at the end of this post). Noting that while she admired the works of Toyen and Mimi Parent, Jean-Pierre wrote in BLS #9 that nothing was more pressing for her than to create A NEW POINT. She died in 1992.
In the early 1960s Jean-Pierre Guillon along with his friends Annie Le Brun and Hervé Delabarre contacted André Breton and the Paris group. Curiously like Abeille, he first published in La Brèche #7—a poem inspired by a phrase heard in a dream: “the men in the dream lived a hundred million years, each 20 years old: it was the wished-for age of Avalcanti during his 1629 voyage.” He continued to document his dream-life as poetic evidence, in 1996 gathering a selection in Les nuits du veilleur du nuit (“The nights of the night watchman”). After the dissolution of the Paris group, he aligned with Vincent Bounoure’s position, participating in BLS, Surréalisme, Phases, and later was regularly involved in S.U.R.R. At the same time he worked to save Maurice Fourré’s novels from oblivion (whose La nuit du Rose-Hôtel is a hermetic masterpiece) and with others founded L’Association des amis de Maurice Fourré. He also prized the paintings of Yves Tanguy to the point of translating Gordon Onslow Ford's essay "Yves Tanguy and Automatism" for publication in 2002 éditions de la Digitale. In 2011, a year before his death, Le Grognard gathered his biting, satirical polemics against public abuses of D.A.F. de Sade, André Breton, Benjamin Péret, and others in a convulsive issue well worth reading.

A-T-2 231 NME Cassettes
There's a new book been published called Whatever Happened To The C86 Kids? (yawn!) C86 was a cassette put out by the New Musical Express in 1986, 5-years after the C81 cassette. To obtain the cassette you cut out and collected the tokens in the NME then sent them to an address with a small amount of cash and a stamped addressed envelope. The copy on the Facebook ad goes "C86 was the sound and ethos that defined a generation. It was arguably the point in which 'indie' was born. The responses to this are really entertaining and I completely agree with them
A common criticism of C86 is after it the term 'Indie' became synonymous with twee Jangle Pop by white kids, so it had a reductive effect and pushed out more interesting music that was also being released independently. What doesn't get mentioned is the enormous success of The Smiths, who release The Queen Is Dead in 1986, and how they contribute to 'indie' becoming shorthand for jangle pop. The NME was in love with The Smiths, The Queen Is Dead was voted NME's greatest album of all time. The Smiths label Rough Trade later released C86 as an LP
"Birth of Indie? First Indie chart was 1979. "Where's Captain Kirk?" by Spizzenergi was number 1.
Up to 86 or so it was a broad church of sounds and styles [...] am I the only one who thinks the term was misappropriated?"
People took offence at the claim it was the point at which indie was born, it's a misleading claim, it's the point 'indie' is understood to mean jangle pop was born
"It seemed to me it later became a term for a very narrow conservative style"
Something similar happened earlier in this year when in an interview for the Guardian he claimed to have accidentally invited trip-hop, Coldcut responded by pointing out he used to buy Ninja Tune records from them way before then... why let the facts get in the way of a story, especially if you're pedalling some product...
Another criticism is it wasn't as interesting or varied as the original C81 cassette which, astonishingly, came out in 1981 and covered a whole range of post-punk and new wave music, I've shared the some of the bands on here, Scritti Politti, The Beat, Cabaret Voltaire, D.A.F., Essential Logic...
"Never heard of it. I had C81 but was NME still even a credible paper in '86?"
"Why does C81 never get a mention?"
My microblog is called C40 in recognition of these two cassettes and as I'm focusing on music from this time period, 40-years-ago. I own C81 and C86 and much prefer C81... this blog is about variety and in that light why do none of the other NME cassettes get a mention?
Before I forget Simon Reynolds has written about C86 a lot, I kind of agree with his take here
C81 (Copy 001) was produced in conjunction with Rough Trade Records and features artists Rough Trade were distributing in the UK at the time but the NME released another cassette in 1981 called Dancin' Master (NME 001.) Dancin' Master was as varied as C81 but it also included two edited tracks from Sugar Hill records alongside the new wave, no wave, power pop, and reggae
1982, and that's what we're interested in here, Jive Wire (NME 002) carries on from the previous two cassettes moving away from post-punk as popular music was. Like the previous cassettes it's a mixture of exclusives and current releases from artists labels are trying to push
Dub mix of Thompson Twins' In The Name Of Love only found on Jive Wire, I think
youtube
Jive Wire has a brilliant tracklisting, Suicide, Gill Scott-Heron, Black Uhuru, The Gun Club, The Beat
NME 003 was a classic Stax Records compilation, by 1982 Stax wasn't releasing new music, owners of the Stax back catalogue Fantasy Records were repackaging and reissuing
Mighty Reel (NME 004) picks up from Jive Wire, Elvis Costello, Haircut 100, Kid Creole, Weekend, Brother "D" with Collective Effort, The Honeymoon Killers, BEF and Billy Mackenzie, Mari Wilson, King Sunny Ade, Ornette Coleman, Robert Wyatt, Virginia Astley, Rockers Revenge, Fun Boy Three, Liaisons Dangereuses, Cabaret Voltaire, Yello, and...
UB40 - Forget The Cost. Mickey Dread mix exclusive to this cassette. This mix is all about what we get after 3m50s. I wish there was a better recording of it uploaded to YouTube
youtube
Michael Smith - Trainer, produced by Dennis Bovell and Linton Kwesi Johnson
youtube
NME 005 was a 60s soul/funk/blues/jazz compilation in conjunction with Charly Records the big re-issue label

Music: 1981 Mix
My self-indulgent tour of the music of the early 80s continues.
1981 saw “rock” fully embracing new technologies: synthesizers, sampling and rap. Check out, for instance, the rapping Austrian…
These new technologies played a role in many transformational and evolutionary changes. Pete Shelley, lead singer for pioneering punk band The Buzzcocks, surprised everyone with the synth-led, danceable, transcendent “Homosapien”. The Human League evolved from a quirky experimental synth band to a pop band prominently featuring female vocalists. Track down “Circus of Death” on YouTube sometime if you want to hear how much a band can change in two years. The evolution of The Human League also spun off Heaven 17. New Order arose from the ashes of Joy Division like a Phoenix brandishing a sequencer. Robert Fripp decided, for Robert Fripp reasons, to start a new version of King Crimson after almost seven years of dormancy.
Then there’s Talking Heads, which spawned three separate projects in 1981. What I hear in these records is that David Byrne wanted to be Brian Eno, Jerry Harrison wanted to be David Byrne, and Tina Weymouth is an under-appreciated genius.
Meanwhile, back in the USA, good old guitar/bass/drums rock ’n’ roll was alive and well. 1981 saw the first single from R.E.M. and first albums from Go-Go’s and The Replacements. In addition, Mission of Burma released the EP that would make them college radio station staples.
The 1981 mix, as well as my 1980 mix, is available here.
