sorry if you're getting tired of the axolotl song stuff but I just think it is incredible. did you compose the song? if so, what DAW did you use? any cool vsts? sample packs? I absolutely loved it

Oh, I love talking tech! I still consider myself an amateur in the ways of production, but I'm always working on getting better. None of this is by any means the best way (or even a good way) to do anything, it's just how I did it.

I did compose the song, yes - musically and lyrically (other than the first line of the first verse, of course). I use Studio One for my DAW. I got it a good number of years ago and I've liked it enough that I haven't moved to anything else.

I don't play drums and I don't pretend to write drums, so all of the drum tracks are just standard midi samples from EZdrummer (although I did add the tambourine and shaker).

I normally hate using ribbon mics with my voice, but I think I used a ribbon mic through a preamp with built-in channel strip. Other than stock EQ and compression, I threw vocals and bass through some simple LANDR plug-ins that I got as a pack. There's a bit more post-production on the vocals, but nothing notable. Bass was all DI.

I usually like to either live mic my guitars or run my amps through cabinet simulators, but this one was all DI + digital. I've recently been turned on by Neural DSP's plug-ins (though I normally use them for... heavier... guitar riffs), so all of the guitar tracks in this were using the Nolly model because I felt it had a relatively Cake feel.

The trumpet sounds very fake because it came from a not-particularly-great stock instrument sample pack in my DAW. It was the only trumpet I had on hand. The synth sounds both came from an Arturia Analog Lab synth package that came with my midi keyboard. Yes, I did play that freaky little synth thing after the first chorus.

I actually forgot to throw on a master reverb, but I don't think it was lacking too much without it (especially for a meme song). The real magic came from two things at the end of it all. I ran everything through an outboard Elysia mid/side stereo saturation module to widen it all and beef it up a little, and finished it all off with the iZotope Ozone mastering plug-in to really make it sparkle and get the final levels right.

Thanks for all the spaceship pix. Are you strictly stereo out at the end? No multitrack edits after the fact? I'd love to know more about how oops was made. It's something I can't stop coming back to after 20 years. I'm sure I read somewhere ages ago that you made it on impulse tracker and I always wondered how the hell you recorded the guitar stuff and got loops in time in primative tracker world. It makes more sense now to see that you were using cubase to sequence.

Okay so all of Oops was recorded in a dorm room on a Dell desktop.. I had a low-end 2in-2out interface (I can't exactly remember the brand but it was a blue 1u and maybe the brand had something to do with water or waves?) but I didn't own a real mic so all the guitar was recorded with a little plastic mic that came with the computer that plugged into a minijack input on the back of the computer.

The process was the same as what I did for most of Role Model-- download packs of drum machine samples, DSP them in Cool Edit Pro, send them to Akai S2000 sampler (via MIDI somehow) and then sequence the basic synth parts (Nord lead 2) in Cubase..

Then, when I recorded the hardware, I would solo every individual riff or passage or loop or w/e, and record them individually. I don't know if Cool Edit Pro' s multitrack editor didn't have a grid or I just didn't know how to turn it on, but I would then go DSP all over the recorded parts, calculate (to 3 decimal places) how many seconds 2 or 4 bars would be at the BPM I had used in Cubase, and collage/arrange everything in Cool Edit with 1 track of a blank .wav file at that calculated length copy & pasted on the first track as a reference to help keep everything lined up in time.

(Probably should also note that, at this time, all my software and plug-ins were warez, which appeared to be the case for every nearly other IDM producer I met. I think I remember Keith Whitman telling me on his Hotline server that he paid for Digital Performer 4, and I imagine the Bay Area scene guys weren't pirating Cycling74 stuff but I also imagine they were getting discounts or promo copies or something...)

But in the last uh, ~dozen? years or so I've had multi-input breakout boxes so I could "jam" with the hardware and record individual tracks live simultaneously and then edit from there. Though the "Spell for Ascending" ep was a straight Stereo-Out-from-Mackie-1202 situation, cuz I got a reel-to-reel off Craigslist (from a veteran who had used it to listen to music in Vietnam!) and was jamming with Dr660 drum machine going into the left channel and FS1r going into the right channel. Oh, and Manumit Me, "Secs Tape" and Prosperity were all hardware jams recorded to 4 track cassette and then I'd record 2 separate stereo track mixdowns to the computer, usually with 1 mix all the percussion and 1 everything else, so I could do some monkeying and muting with different parts that way.

Author Elon Decker states, “To increase the transfer speeds and avoid any possible problems such as data loss or corruption, different data transfer ports have been made.” Therefore it is important to buy the right port not only for speed, but functionality. The article begins with USB 2, which was created in 2000 (23 years ago!) and transfers data at 60MBps (megabytes per second). The Thunderbolt 3 on the other hand transfers data at 40 GBps (Gigabytes per second). Not only is this a huge difference in speed, but also supports a 4k display if your computer uses that. As someone who uses a 4k display, this is an important factor in choosing my port in an audio interface as well.

A key factor that I’ve left out which doesn’t involve specs or price is dedication. Money can’t buy the hard work it takes to be a great musician, audio engineer, producer or excel in any field of life. Therefore, the latest equipment will not instantaneously make you better. There’s no shame in lower quality if you can put in the work it takes to get the best results for your budget. Ultimately, the best choice for an audio workstation setup will depend on the specific needs and preferences of the user. The Universal Audio Apollo x8p is a good choice for users who require high-quality audio conversion and the ability to run UAD plug-ins, while the Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 is a good choice for users who require versatility and a wide range of inputs and outputs. Personally, I would start with the focusrite as it has the same sample rate and bit depth, then upgrade when I can afford the Apollo. Which do you prefer!?
