They can flick out, visible, deliberately on camera long enough to be noted in interpol records and then hide for the swap, if rafters and pockets. Remy can be anything, easily hidden in plain sight. Vianney has that same sharp trust as Nate, all promises and no assurance. But Marron’s too big for pockets. She’s smaller now, the Black Bear form that had been her core for so many years lost the day Eliot ran from Moreau, the day he went back to being Eliot instead of Spencer. A dog is still too visible. Her fallen flag of a tail’s too feathery, the reddish gold of her fur too bright. She’s too recognizable for a Steranko job. She knows how it’s supposed to go down. That Eliot will run through the doors, that Nate will pull out a gun with blanks. She has to be seen in the van, one heartbeat as the doors close, before everyone escapes in a blindspot and leaves the fake bodies for Nate to drive into the river, so that the presumed Dust will be lost and not questioned. But anything can happen inside a building her paws can’t enter. Anything can go wrong, and then it won’t be a fake body with her other half’s lovers’ face. It’ll be Hardison, it’ll be Chip. It’ll be Parker and a scattering of diamond on the wind. “I don’t want to do this,” she tells Eliot, leaning against his leg. Nothing hurts as much as Separation, but staying back, powerless to help? That’s close. “Last time,” Eliot says. “This will be the last time.” He’s never lied to her before. Somehow that doesn’t help, when the doors swing open and she sees him lurch down the ramp and fall, Nathan holding the gun.  There was a time when anyone who pointed a weapon at Eliot would have had his throat torn out before his finger could twitch. And it is only the trust in Eliot’s eyes, the trust she can still feel despite the distance between them, that stops her paws and pulls her hackles down. She does not lunge. She licks his face, and tastes sugar instead of salt.

Summer in Los Angeles meant the smell of hot asphalt. It wafted from roads and parking lots to smother unfortunate pedestrians, who stubbornly stood in an environment actively hostile, like weeds on the sidewalk...

... At such temperatures the air smelled noxious, as if the asphalt had returned to the molten tar it had been poured as- the fumes were enough to choke. Sheltered in his cruiser, AC cranked, Fulbright was unaffected by the smell or the heat.

Technically, it wan't LA proper- he had just driven past city limits, though nothing around him showed it. Much of LA simply preferred not to admit they were LA, or fact the city had sprawled out and consumed what distinguishing features had once been. Fulbright pulled into the strip mall parking lot, where the road turned from newish black to a dull grey. He pulled into a spot, the white chipped away, nearly gone, and turned the engine off. Now not overpowered by cool air, the burn of the sun could be felt- on his face, his hands, even through the fabric on his arms where the light directly struck.

He popped open the door and the smell entered his car. To say that this bothered him would be inaccurate. Bobby Fulbright wasn’t the sort of man to notice the smell- he had lived in Southern Japanifornia for his whole life, 12 years in Los Angeles proper. In that time, he had lived driving from work, to strip mall, to home, to work- the smell of a parking lot was mundane to him, likely. The man in his skin didn’t have any emotions on which his opinion could be based. He did, however, notice the smell. He noticed it quite a lot

     MOST SCAVS WOULD AVOID MERCENARIES LIKE THE PLAGUE; particularly mercenaries that were too talented for their own good, Var was not the typical parasite. Survival at core was the nature of their skill, turning on one another was typical, though she donned the typical static to camouflage her features; she understood quickly friends in higher positions gained her a better chance of seeing tomorrow. It was too bad her morality was long gone, the day she knew chrome that was not her own sold for a higher price tag, they could have been friends, great friends even, the mere thought was depressing enough. Oh no, she didn’t like to dwell on those nasty emotions, humanity was too much for her to handle, it stopped her from acquiring another eddie into her one of many bank accounts.

      “I thought it was all BD’s && virtual tits nowadays in strip joints, the type I go to tend to be that way. Cold cash is dead, only digital, that way they can stipend you more” an annoyance lingers in her voice as if she knows it all too well, shady deals in shadier places, it was almost cliche if it wasn’t her typical affair. V was smart, without the usage of a chip there was no way a daemon could sneak up, Var was the type to place one often scoffing - it’s eat or be eaten, she preferred the ladder. Cheeks in shiny glitter scrunch for a moment, she tuts underneath her breath, “Oh right, you cannot afford luxury multivitamin IV drips, the newest zombie facials, I don’t know how you commoner peasants live - I would lose it” her shoulders lurch forward, hiding behind a genuine smile.

         Luxury clientele she liked to call them, BD actresses, politicians, politician’s mistress, famous who is or was, they all want the same thing, eternal youth, beauty && endless power. Who was she to deny them? The perks of being touted as Night City’s health, wellness, beauty expert was golden - though, if the debt accumulated, there were ways of handling it. There were strange customs to sealing contracts, she was used to them all, through shots or blood, whatever benefited them both, Var didn’t mind. “Your loss, flaming tequila shots are all the rage, the fire is meant to be good for your health - sizzling stomach lining is so in” she was a comedian with a flat monochromatic tone, holding back her own laughter. “Deal, I may not amount to much in other areas but I keep my word, that you can be sure of” the extension of her slender digit wrapped in diamonds was made, linking them together as she snickers.

         “Too bad we have to meet on these terms, V, we could have made for an unforgettable team - the most I can do is assure the scavs don’t bother you too much but it’s customary duty for your elk to get rid of the garbage, I’ll look away”   

Gratefully she accepts the light, admiring the bedazzled lighter in turn. If there's one thing she and Varv had in common, beyond just trying to survive, is aesthetics and style. The blonde's fashion has always been on point. In another life she could see the two of them being boutique buddies.

"Of course they still make bills. I find wads of them on jobs all the time." A cloud of smoke is blown from orchid painted lips. "Besides, that's still what's used in strip clubs." At least last she checked it was still cold hard eddies tossed onto stages or slipped into g-strings. Her source being her own experience in such a hedonistic den comprised of sequins, faux smiles and rivers of booze. Cred chips probably get thrown about, nestled between cheeks or within voluptuous valleys all the same — it seems like bad business though and just...a pain.

Cherry is ashed as the unnecessary logistics of such a tangent are pushed aside. "Anyways it's nothing personal, Varv. But I know firsthand all the nasty shit people can hide on cred chips." Because V and her net cohorts are within that demographic of menaces that put various nefarious surprises on such shards. The reasons vary from testing out new malware to more planned out operations. Then there's the times that are just for the simple factor of entertainment — for shits and giggles, even if what lurked on their tainted chips was more malicious or deadly than mere joke viruses. "Just can't afford to be catching some sort of bug. Don't get sick leave after all or the full benefits package. You know how it is for us plebeians that don't reside in ivory towers." A jabbing joke at all the suited pricks that look down their noses at people like her and Varvara.

The mention of a blood pact earns a snort of a chuckle from the solo, a genuine grin peeking through her serious biz mask. "Have to pass on the drink. I'll do you one better than a handshake or meaningless bloody palm." Cigarette placed to be held in between her lips. Right pinky is then held out to the other woman. The strobing lights cause the chromatic glitter of her acrylic talon to sparkle. "We're both women of high class and taste. So we can pinky promise on it." Playful is the gesture. Her statement lacks mockery. Another sign of goodwill (much like sharing her precious nicotine) despite the cautionary conditions she's set.

System76 News: A May With Zing!

The force was with us in May, as we have a ton of fun updates for you! See what’s new regarding hardware, manufacturing, and accessories, and what’s in the works for Pop!_OS and our open firmware.

HARDWARE

In case you missed it, we recently announced that a new Gazelle laptop will be released soon! Gazelle has both 15” and 17” options and comes loaded with a 9th Gen Intel Core i7 CPU, an NVIDIA 16-series GPU, and up to 64GB RAM. Gazelle’s trifecta of CPU, GPU, and Memory gives content creators, gamers, animators, and designers a machine that can keep up with their graphics-heavy workloads. Head over to the product page to be notified when it releases this summer!

MANUFACTURING

“Brace” yourself for these manufacturing tweaks to Thelio Major:

A new power supply brace, GPU brace, and PCI bracket improve stability within Thelio Major’s interior, especially during shipping. Similarly, modifications were made to the CPU heat sink duct to better hold the heat sink in place while in transit.

ACCESSORIES

UK keyboard layouts are currently available on the Oryx Pro and Darter Pro! Though this keyboard layout is only available for a limited time, this option could stick around depending on popularity.

POP!_OS

Features

The ability to disable mouse acceleration has been added to GNOME Settings in Pop!_OS 19.04. Disabling mouse acceleration allows for the increased precision of mouse movements desired by PC gamers, artists, and designers for their unique use cases that depend on mouse accuracy. This patch was previously submitted upstream to GNOME by Mathew Bouma, but was not accepted. However, we’ve decided to include the patch as an option in Settings rather than through the GNOME Tweak Tool utility, as this feature has been highly requested among Pop!_OS users.

Graphics

VAAPI / VDPAU hardware decoding is now enabled by default for open source graphics drivers and the proprietary NVIDIA driver. This enables hardware decoding of supported video codecs in supported video players such as MPV. This can drastically reduce power consumption and CPU workload by offloading the expensive decoding tasks to dedicated hardware included alongside the graphics chip that was built specifically for those video decoding algorithms. This does not apply to Chromium or Firefox, however, as both of these browsers lack support for hardware decoding on Linux entirely.

System76-Power

Support for handling multiple hwmon interfaces for multiple I/O boards and CPUs was added to system76-power to combat excessive fan usage. This should reduce the amount of noise generated by fans on desktops that are affected by this criteria. A much quieter fan curve is also in the works and will arrive soon.

Security

Patches have already been released for Intel’s latest security vulnerabilities. To apply these patches, users are advised to install all available updates and reboot. These patches address the following security vulnerabilities:

- CVE-2018-12126 Microarchitectural Store Buffer Data Sampling (MSBDS)

- CVE-2018-12130 Microarchitectural Fill Buffer Data Sampling (MFBDS)

- CVE-2018-12127 Microarchitectural Load Port Data Sampling (MLPDS)

- CVE-2019-11091 Microarchitectural Data Sampling Uncacheable Memory (MDSUM)

Fixes

We’ve updated the youtube-dl package to a newer version. This package, maintained by Debian and Canonical, is used for downloading videos from YouTube. Changes made by Google to the YouTube API had recently broken this package in the Ubuntu repositories, hence the update.

Spacing issues between labels and icons in the Files side panel have been fixed as well. If you see any other issues with the GTK theme in 19.04, be sure to submit an issue report!

Pop Upgrade Progress

The new upgrade process for Pop!_OS is almost done! Though not yet implemented, the following changes have been made to Pop!_OS upgrading in May.

The option for keeping or disabling third party repositories was added to the upgrade daemon. Currently, third party repositories are disabled by default during an upgrade, which can interrupt a user’s workflow for certain applications.

Support for the Refresh OS option has also been added to GNOME Settings. Selecting this option will prepare the system to boot into the recovery partition on the next boot, and to ask to perform a refresh install. This allows you to skip setup for the language and keyboard settings, and to go straight to the refresh view.

Pop Upgrade: The Recovery Shell

The recovery shell was implemented this month, which opens a terminal to allow the user to manually recover from an error that prevents an upgrade from completing. Once the terminal is closed, the upgrade will be re-attempted.

Pop!_Volunteers This Week

@derpOmattic has submitted a handful of DEP11 appstream metadata: GNOME Authenticator, Lollypop, & PulseEffects. The addition of these apps to the Pop!_Shop was made possible through the help of @stratact and his DEP11 convertor. MR

@derpOmattic added the appstream metadata for Alacritty and TimeShift. MR

@adminxvii implemented checksum verification in Popsicle. MR

FIRMWARE

In open firmware news, the camera toggle hotkey is now functional. The last remaining hardware issues with running open firmware on our laptops lie with Thunderbolt. On Whiskey Lake chipsets, the Thunderbolt controller is often not in a functional state after suspending/resuming the system. On Kaby Lake chipsets, the Thunderbolt controller is never visible.

A new BIOS setup menu is also being designed for our open firmware so that the look and feel is consistent with the beautiful aesthetic you can expect from a System76 product. This will be implemented once the new firmware is ready for release.

“Oh, he most certainly is, my lord!” Sunan replied cheerfully.  “My contact back in Felheart is a being of most reliable character, I’ll have you know.  I saw to that.”

Thevan continued to study the distant temple through the scope of his rifle.  Even in its dilapidated state, it was clear that it was not of any architectural style common to the Imperium.  He thought he could see some elements of Eldar influence, but time and neglect had made it difficult to be certain.

But even if he was looking upon evidence of xenos worship by the moon’s original inhabitants - original human inhabitants, you mean - that was not what Thevan found the most unsettling.  The environs surrounding the building were quiet, far too quiet for even the most desolate regions of this cursed world.  Even at this distance, he could feel a sense of emptiness enveloping the place.

The fact that he was looking for an Ork just made the whole situation all the more bizarre.
