Okay, so any time a hunter clan gets mentioned in any of my threads, 99.9% of the time it’s the Mahlendorf’s.

They are headed up by Aleister, who is a sadistic piece of shit that takes great pleasure in making people suffer, whether they are non-human or not. He’s also been around much longer than he should have (he’s been actively hunting since 1907), as he’s been using magic to prolong his life so he can retain an iron grip on controlling the clan.

19 DAYS OUT It was a Saturday, the twenty-first of August, when Castiel realized he might have actual friends. He should’ve realized, probably, when Sam had showed up to the church /again/ the previous Sunday just to ask Castiel to hang out with him and his brother on Saturday.  But it didn’t.  Not until Dean was pulling into the church parking lot at eight in the morning that Saturday, Sam in the passenger seat. “He’s asleep,” Dean said softly when Castiel slid into the back seat.  Castiel closed the door behind him as quietly as he could.  Dean continued, “Because he’s a giant baby and he can’t stay awake before nine thirty.” “Fuck off, m’not a baby,” Sam said immediately, although he did sound very juvenile and sleepy when he said it. “Go back to sleep, giant baby,” Dean said.  To Castiel: “Did you bring a—that’s a dumb question.  Never mind.” “Swim clothes?” Castiel guessed.  “Towel?  No.” They were going to Lewis and Clark lake, where you could purportedly swim.  According to Sam when he’d invited Castiel on Sunday, it was tradition, something they’d done in the summers with Bobby even before they’d come to live with him.  It was a spottier tradition now, not something that happened every year, usually something that happened without Bobby at all, but Castiel was honored to be included regardless. “I’m getting coffee,” Dean announced, putting the car in reverse to turn around, his voice still relatively quiet.  “Sam?  Oh, you’re sleeping again.” “I’m not sleeping.” “Why do you only wake up to pretend you’re not asleep?  Coffee?” “Why didn’t you bring coffee?” Dean made a short, affronted noise.  “Yes or no, shithead.” Sam groaned, the annoyance in his tone seeming wildly disproportionate to the situation.  “Yes.” “Good,” Dean said, “stunt your growth.  Castiel?” Dean met his eyes in the mirror. Weirdly, Castiel felt like he was being tested.  “Sure.” Dean smiled, genuine and sharp and bright as the sun.

La mia personale classifica dei romanzi storici di Lavyrle Spencer

Quando un’autrice mi piace, da vera lettrice compulsiva, a volte tento di leggere tutti o quasi i romanzi che ha scritto (a meno che non siano troppo numerosi). Ho deciso di provarci con l’autrice Lavyrle Spencer, che in tutta la sua carriera ha scritto solo 22 romanzi, prima di ritirarsi.

Inviò il suo primo romanzo intorno al 1978 a Kathleen Woodiwiss di cui era grande fan, questa lo lesse e lo inviò alla sua agente letteraria perchè secondo lei meritava di essere pubblicato e così fu. Lavyrle iniziò così una fulgida carriera che durò fino  al 1997, quando decise che aveva guadagnato abbastanza per andare in pensione e smise di scrivere per dedicarsi alla famiglia e ad altre passioni tra cui la musica.

Da quattro dei suoi libri vennero tratti anche film per la televisione, tra cui Morning glory, con protagonista Christopher Reeve. E scusate se è poco (potete recuperare il film su youtube).

Siccome molti dei suoi romanzi contemporanei sono molto brevi e scritti per le collane da edicola della Avon, ho deciso di leggere invece le sue opere maggiori, cioè i suoi romanzi storici che in tutto sono 10.

Tra questi ho deciso di non leggere The Fulfillment, perchè la trama non è nelle mie corde, anzi ha uno dei tipi di trama che odio di più, perciò già sapevo avrei odiato il libro indipendentemente dallo stile.

Dei restanti 9 ho stilato una personale classifica dei miei preferiti, partendo da quelli che mi sono piaciuti di più e finendo con quelli che ho apprezzato meno.

Noterete che al primo posto, tra i miei preferiti ho messo a parimerito tre romanzi, perchè mi era impossibile scegliere tra loro. Li ho amati tutti e tre per ragioni diverse e sono tutti e tre bellissimi.

Parimenti anche tra quelli che non mi sono piaciuti ho tre parimerito al quinto posto, perchè non mi sono piaciuti in egual modo ma per motivi diversi.

Ecco la mia lista:

1) Giocare d’’azzardo (The gamble) di LaVyrle Spencer

Trama: Kansas, 1888. In una piccola cittadina è in atto una guerra senza esclusione di colpi. Da un lato abbiamo i proprietari dei Saloon e delle Sale da gioco, dall'altro le donne del paese, mogli e madri stanche di vedere i loro uomini ubriacarsi e perdere soldi sui tavoli da gioco. Coinvolti nella guerra due personaggi interessanti. Agata, la proprietaria di un negozio da modista. Zitella di oltre trent'anni a causa di una gamba ferita che la fa zoppicare e le rende difficile interagire con gli altri. Soffre di un'acuta solitudine e sogna di poter ballare, di poter avere dei figli e un marito, ma non osa cercare di far avverare i suoi sogni, crede siano irrangiungibili. Poi abbiamo Scott proprietario di un nuovo Sallloon , che viene dal profondo Sud. Affascinante ma segnato dalla Guerra civile e dalle grave perdite subite da anni viaggi senza meta,mantenendosi col gioco d'azzardo. Sembra che queste due persone non abbiamo nulla in comune, invece non è così. Entrambi dietro la corazza che presentano al mondo hanno un cuore d'oro e aiutano il prossimo ogni volta che possono. Un piccolo orfano li avvicinerà l'uno all'altra e forse entrambi potranno guarire se sapranno ascoltare il loro cuore……

La mia opinione: Bello bello bello. E’ un romance corposo, non breve. Eppure avrei voluto l'autrice andasse avanti a raccontare poichè l'autrice si interrompe proprio sul più bello. Voglio sapere cosa succede dopo ai due protagonisti. Due personaggi veramente belli e ben ponderati. Costruiti talmente bene da sembrare reali, con una complessità rara da trovare eppure semplici al tempo stesso. E anche i personaggi secondari non sono da meno. Abbiamo persino una storia d'amore secondaria. Insomma un libro che consiglio veramente. Abbiamo manifestanti urlanti, bottiglie pallottole e coltelli che volano. Ballerine di can can, una antica piantagione di cotone e persino un fantasma e una stupenda macchina da cucire. Non manca nulla a questo romanzo. La parte che ho prefrito credo siano stati i dialoghi.

1) A Braccia Aperte (Forgiving) di LaVyrle Spencer

Trama:1876: Sarah Merritt arriva a Deadwood, nel Dakota, decisa a fondare il primo giornale della cittadina. È però anche sulle tracce della sorella minore, Addie fuggita di casa cinque anni prima, per portarle la triste notizia della morte del padre. Alta, compassata, l'aria austera nonostante i venticinque anni, Sarah deve combattere l'atteggiamento ostile dell'intera comunità, soprattutto quello dello sceriffo Noah Campbell.

Uomo testardo e impetuoso, dai baffi ramati e dai sardonici occhi verdi, costui non esita ad arrestare la donna. Inizia così una guerra tra due forti personalità, che riescono ad allearsi solo in nome di un comune obiettivo: ritrovare al più presto Addie e ricondurla sulla retta via.

La ragazza, infatti, non lavora come domestica presso la "famiglia" Hossiter, come ha sempre fatto credere. Una spirale di vizio e corruzione l'ha intrappolata... Che cosa può averla trasformata tanto e in che modo Sarah la persuaderà a cambiare vita, a ritornare la dolce fanciulla di una volta?

La mia opinione: Ricco di personaggi indimenticabili e delineati con grande sensibilità, una trama avvincente intrecciata a fatti storici realmente accaduti. Due storie d’amore, due sorelle, diverse ma unite da affetto sincero e gli uomini che lotteranno per loro. Una storia di perdono verso gli altri e verso se stessi. Super consigliato.

Nota: tutti i romanzi della Specer sono molto casti, questo forse è l’unico che ha un livello di sensualità leggermente più alto.

1) Una scuola nella prateria (Years)

Trama: Linnea, giovane maestra elementare, all'apparenza esile e delicata, è invece forte, decisa e coraggiosa. Parte per Alamo dove insegnerà in una scuola nella prateria e sarà ospitata da una famiglia del paese, i Westgaard. L'arrivo della bella maestrina, la sua vivacità, il suo entusiasmo portano una ventata di giovinezza e di allegria.

Theodore, 34 anni, fisico atletico e forte, è vedovo con un figlio già adolescente. Primogenito dei Westgaard, una numerosa famiglia di agricoltori, è onesto, semplice e leale. Pur essendo fortemente attratto da Linnea, cerca in tutti i modi di reagire ai propri sentimenti ripetendosi che sarebbe follia rivelare l'amore che sta provando per una donna molto più giovane di lui.

Un uomo e una donna del Nord Dakota, lontani per età e cultura, mentre in Europa si combatte la Prima Guerra Mondiale, vengono travolti da eventi destinati a cambiare il volto del mondo e da un sentimento forte e generoso che li terrà uniti per tutta la vita.

La mia opinione: Se amo The gamble per i dialoghi, e Forgiving per la trama e la storia dei protagonisti, sicuramente amo Years per i personaggi veramente approfonditi in modo magistrale. Mentre leggevo mi sembarva di vivere con loro e conoscerli da sempre. Qui non ci sono scontri o avventure, è una semplice storia d’amore, che però di semplice non ha nulla. La protagonista mi ha ricordato Anna dai capelli rossi da adulta. Un libro toccante e totalmente realistico che racconta le tragedie quotidiane di un agrande famiglia e l’amore di coppia che sboccerà e durerà nonostante le avversità. toccante.

Nota: tutti i romanzi della Specer sono molto casti, questo forse è l’unico che ha un livello di sensualità leggermente più alto, insieme a Forgiving, ma molto leggermente.

2) Giorni di gloria (Morning Glory) di LaVyrle Spencer

Trama: Elly, vedova con due figli e in attesa di un terzo, è una donna forte e coraggiosa, ma tutti la considerano pazza a causa della sua ritrosia, conseguenza di una terribile infanzia. Figlia illegittima, è stata tenuta dai nonni, fanatici religiosi, rinchiusa in casa per anni e anni. Will, attraente, onesto, intelligente e gran lavoratore, ha avuto una vita difficile. A Whitney, una cittadina della Georgia, spera di gettarsi alle spalle il passato. E’ rimasto orfano piccolissimo ed è convinto che nessuno potrà mai amarlo davvero. Un uomo e una donna, con i quali la vita non è stata generosa, portano con sé ricordi angosciosi, timori e insicurezze che sembrano offuscare la serenità della loro unione. L'amore che nutrono l'uno per l'altro, però, è talmente forte che li aiuterà a superare ogni difficoltà.

La mia opinione: questo è un poco struggente per il passato dei protagonisti, ma poi è semplicemente romantico (ma con una vena malinconica) perchè non puoi non fare il tifo per loro. Certo non è la trama più innovativa di questo mondo. Avrò letto almeno dieci romance simili ambientati nell’America di inizi 1900, ma questo è scritto molto ma molto bene.

3) La sposa di Boston (The endearment)

Trama: Un fratello di tredici anni ed un cumulo di menzogne è tutta la dote che Anna Reardon porta a Karl Lindstrom, l'uomo che ha ordinato una moglie per posta. Ridotta alla disperazione da una vita di stenti e di squallore, Anna lascia Boston diretta nel lontano Minnesota, dove l'attende il suo futuro marito.

Anche  se la giovane non corrisponde affatto alla donna matura ed efficiente che Karl aveva richiesto, tra i due scocca la  scintilla di un amore tenero e appassionato. Il generoso Karl perdona  alla moglie i tanti inganni, ma c'è ancora un segreto che lei gli  nasconde e che il suo orgoglio d'uomo non può accettare...

La mia opinione: libro dalla trama semplicissima, e con personaggi altrettanto semplici perchè veramente molto giovani. Però scritto veramente bene e molto più lungo degli altri.

4) Un’estate per cambiare (That Camden summer)

Trama: Siamo agli inizi del Novecento e Roberta, divorziata con tre figlie, torna nel Maine, nella cittadina natale, dove scopre con amarezza che una donna nella sua condizione è considerata quasi una poco di buono. Ma lei non si perde d'animo e, sfidando le convenzioni, si trova un impiego, impara a guidare e acquista perfino un'auto. Sugli uomini non si fa più molte illusioni, ma quando incontra l'affascinante Gabriel comincia a cambiare idea, anche se le prove che aspettano entrambi si riveleranno difficili e drammatiche.

La mia opinione: la trama di per sè sarebbe carina e interessante, una donna avanti per la sua epoca e molto coraggiosa, ma lo stile di scrittura è molto ripetitivo e prolisso e i personaggi poco approfonditi.

5) La sposa promessa (Vows)

Trama: Emily, occhi azzurri e lunghi capelli neri, è veramente molto bella. Fiera, orgogliosa, indipendente, lavora come stalliere per suo padre e segue per corrispondenza un corso di veterinaria, cosa assai strana, specialmente per una donna, nel 1888.Prima di sposarsi desidera concludere gli studi, ma è fidanzata con un uomo molto tradizionalista che vuole formare, appena possibile, una famiglia.Tom, alto e atletico, terribilmente attraente giunge nella città in cui Emily abita, dove apre un'officina di fabbro e si dedica all'allevamento di cavalli.Leale, sincero, con un grande senso dell'onore, vive come una maledizione l'amore che nutre nei confronti della fidanzata del suo migliore amico.

La mia opinione: In questa classifica personale il quinto è l’lutimo posto, ed è un parimerito tra tre libri. Questo in particolare non mi è piaciuto per la trama, che prevede un tradimento intrinseco, e quindi una cosa che io personalemte odio, poi è anche scritto un poco frettolosamente senza molto approfondimento dei personaggi che non si capisce perchè si piacciano tanto e non riescano a resistere l’uno all’altra.

5) Then came heaven

Inedito in italiano

Trama: Una suora che sta già avendo dei dubbi riguardo la sua vocazione, soffre nel non poter consolare e mostrare affetto verso due bambine rimaste orfane al’improvviso e verso il loro padre. Questo la spingerà finalmente a prendere una decisione sul suo futuro.

La mia opinione: romanzo lunghissimo e prolisso, quando la trama non ne avrebbe affatto bisogno. E’ chiaro fin dall’inizio cosa sceglierà la protagonista che già da tempo non sopporta più le restrizioni della vita monacale e che non ha scelto questa vita per se stessa ma è stata scelta per lei dalla nonna fin da piccola. quindi non c’è ragione per cui servano ben trecento pagine di pensieri per giungere a una decisione.

5) The humminbird

Trama: Una zitella con problemi economici e un grande decoro, decide di aiutare il medico del paese ad accudire due feriti: un uomo che ha tentato una rapina su un treno e colui che l’ha fermato. 

La mia opinione: Lo stile di scrittura è molto buono, all’altezza dei migliori romanzi della Spencer, ma i dialoghi e il protagonista maschile non funzionano. Lui non è realistico è solo maleducato dall’inizio fino alla fine del libro, anche quando non avrebbe ragione di esserlo. E questo rovina tutto il libro purtroppo.
