the thing is the mlis program that's top of my list is at the same school where i did my undergrad. which feels wrong somehow but also it's the best program in canada for what i want like just in terms of having the options that i want. also mtl is expensive but not as expensive as toronto or vancouver so u of t and ubc are kind of pipe dreams for that reason anyway, my other option atp would be dalhousie but i don't know a single soul in halifax, i don't have reason to believe that program is good enough to make me move to a province i've literally never been to, and i hear halifax isn't super affordable these days anyway

hi! i’m the anon from soph’s page who was asking about universities and i loved hearing your opinion too. i was thinking about brock because the presenters at the tour i went to were very convincing but then i started thinking they were lying when i went to the cafeteria and they were bragging about their amazing food and then i went on tiktok later and saw people posting about how they got food poisoning multiple times there and i was like ok if you are lying about this WHAT ELSE ARE YOU LYING ABOUT?? anyways what university or college do you like the most?
Omg Hi Hello! Yeah Brock is Like That. It truly is made of popsicle sticks & crayons. A strong breeze would blow it over as an institution.
So different school here REALLY do different thing. Engineering & physics I would definitely reccomend Waterloo, my father went there for physics and chemistry and he had a wonderful time.
Ryerson, OCAD, and Sheridans collage of arts are all really good arts schools—Sheridan specifically for animation. You will get so many opportunities there & if you go after them you are way way more likely to get a job after you graduate.
Like Soph said Guelph is know so well for its veterinary program and similarity Trent University is known for its forensic science program. Trent is a. Weird uni. Weird in a good way! But weird. That’s all I can say on that.
Queens Does have a good business program, so does Western— I have a cousin there and she loves it.
Queens also has an art history program and as much as I HATE to admit it, it’s really good. If I could go back in time I would apply there.
Now there are all universities in Ontario. I only considered one outside of Ontario. It was in Halifax called Dalhousie—and I WISH I had applied there. God I wish I’d followed my instincts instead of listening to my parents. It’s a beautiful campus and has a really wonderful language and history programs.
Can I just say? I think it’s so fucking stupid to apply to university right out of high school.
Not to get personal but the choices I would make for my life now are way smarter now that my brain has fully developed. I didnt know what I wanted to do with my life and that’s okay.
So if you’re feeling overwhelmed by this decision, just know you can wait, you can dive in head first, you can change your mind and backtrack, hell you can start over (very expensive though don’t recommend). It’s your life, and in case nobody has told you this, that means you go at the speed you want to. Nobody else’s. That autonomy and choice is your right. People might pressure u into making certain choices and they are way out of bounds on that!!

“Forget World, Students Told,” Border Cities Star. October 21, 1932. Page 8. ---- Dalhousie U. President Says Too Much Materialism Is Evident ---- HALIFAX, N. S., Oct. 21. "I strongly advise you to lose yourselves in the clouds of fancy as often as you can. Don’t be obsessed so much by this world as it is. A serious study of the world in the past, and a good deal of musing on the world as it might be, is infinitely preferable to pre-occupation with the world in its present sorry condition.”
Such is the opinion of Carleton Stanley, president. of Dalhousie University, as expressed to the student body on their return to take up the years work.
The president deplored the fact that too few of us have been will mg to think hard and long. and to this he attributed the world's mess today, economically, socially and politically.
He felt the universities themselves had been lax and half-hearted, offering popular short-cuts and substitutes. Even the philosophy of our day is steeped in materialism and has forgotten its true self. The love of wisdom, or philosophy, it was said long ago. presupposed a love of learning, and concerned itself with mans mental powers and higher nature. But now we are told on all sides that we must look to man's unconscious and instinctive nature for his true nature; and learning, scholarship and especially the more disciplinary subjects of study are slighted. The result of all this is inevitable.
"The universities, many of them, are fast losing their cutting edge; their graduates, many of them, are guilty of uttering continually the same jargon, the same silly catchwords, as the ordinary vulgar unthinking headline reader.”

Laval: 2023-24 U-Sports Canada Men's Basketball National Champions
Tumblr media
The Laval Rouge et Or concluded an historical journey in historical fashion Sunday night, defeating the Queen’s Gaels 77-71 to capture its first gold medal in the program’s history in the final of the 2024 GreenShield U SPORTS Final 8 Men’s Basketball Championship, presented by Michelob Ultra Sunday night in front of an ecstatic home crowd at the Laval University PEPS in Quebec City.
Qualified as the tournament’s hosts, the Rouge et Or consecutively took care of the Victoria Vikes (first seed), the Dalhousie Tigers (fourth seed) and the Queen’s Gaels (second seed).
With the win the Rouge et Or becomes the first French-language university and only the third RSEQ team to capture the national banner.
Back to the game. Energized by a very engaged crowd of 3,200 fans, the Rouge et Or quickly set the tone to the title match with a 16-points run to transform an 8-5 deficit into a 21-8 lead. The OUA champions still haven’t said their last word. Methodically, the Gaels climbed back into contention and jumped seven points ahead with 17 minutes to go in the game.
As they typically did since the beginning of that tournament, the Rouge et Or did not throw the towel. Steeve Joseph and Ismaël Diouf, who was the player of the game, enabled the local favourites to come from behind and write their own chapter of Canadian university basketball history.
Diouf concluded the final with outstanding 26 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks and two steals in 37 minutes of play. Joseph added 24 points and six assists.
For the Gaels, the U SPORTS Defensive Player of the Year Luka Syllas (23) was the only Gaels scoring over 20 points. Playing their first national final in program history, the Gaels will return to Kingston with a silver medal.
Tournament MVP : Ismaël Diouf (Laval)
Players of the Game: Ismaël Diouf (Laval) and Cole Syllas (Queen’s)
2024 U SPORTS Men’s Basketball Final 8 All-Star Team: Shawn Maranan (Winnipeg) Diego Maffia (Victoria) Malcolm Christie (Dalhousie) Cole Syllas (Queen’s) Ismaël Diouf (Laval)

Animal welfare professor awarded U of G University Professor Emerita
Prof. Patricia Turner, a global leader in laboratory animal science, has been named University Professor Emerita by the University of Guelph (U of G). Turner is internationally recognized for her contributions to animal welfare, particularly her efforts to improve the health and well-being of research animals.
Tumblr media
As a professor in the Department of Pathobiology at the U of G’s Ontario Veterinary College (OVC), Turner led the Laboratory Animal Science program from 2002 until her retirement in 2018, an internationally recognized and American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) accredited program, and the only graduate program of its kind in Canada. Through this program, Turner played a key role in improving training for veterinarians in laboratory animal science. Turner also spearheaded the creation of the U of G’s distance learning certificate program in laboratory animal medicine for veterinarians, which has been well received outside North America, offering opportunities for veterinarians to improve their knowledge and skill-set.
In April 2020, Turner became the first Canadian and second woman ever to be appointed as president of the World Veterinary Association (WVA). The WVA acts as an umbrella organization for national and regional veterinary associations and organizations, uniting more than 500,000 veterinarians in over 96 countries. She is also currently the corporate vice president of Global Animal Welfare with Charles River, a research company specializing in preclinical laboratory services.
Turner has participated in many external leadership activities shaping policies that positively affect the lives of animals, serving as an active member of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA), American Veterinary Medical Association, National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC), AAALAC International, ACLAM, and the Canadian Council on Animal Care. She is a past president of the Association of Primate Veterinarians and the International Association of Colleges of Laboratory Animal Medicine. She is also a valued member of numerous international associations devoted to research animal medicine and welfare.
Since 2000, she has been a Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine, the American Board of Toxicology, and the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine, recently completing a term as chair of the Executive Committee for the animal welfare subspecialty.
Turner began her career after receiving her BSc from McMaster University and her MSc at Dalhousie University. She then attended OVC, where she earned a DVM in 1992 and a DVSc in 1997. Subsequently, Turner served as the Director of Animal Care Services at Queen’s University and later worked as a toxicologist at Warner-Lambert/Pfizer before beginning her professorship at OVC.
Turner served as co-editor in Chief of the National Academy of Sciences’ ILAR Journal and has published over 150 peer-reviewed research articles and book chapters. She has written several books on topics that include applied veterinary ethics, small mammal pathology, laboratory animal medicine, and research animal welfare. In 2014, Turner was awarded the CVMA Humane Award for her efforts to improve the health and welfare of laboratory animals.
After her retirement from OVC, Turner became an adjunct faculty and an associated graduate faculty in OVC’s Department of Pathobiology, continuing her involvement in graduate programs.
The OVC community thanks you Prof. Turner for your significant contributions to our community; we are proud to have you join our esteemed group of Professor Emerita/us.

"516 Students Weeded Out," Windsor Star. January 12, 1943. Page 11. ---- Other Universities Likely to Follow Lead of First Six --- By Canadian Press ---- Six large Canadian universities. embarked on a program of weeding out students with unsatisfactory academic records, have made 516 subject to military call-up as a result of poor showings at Christmas examinations. This action is in conformity with National War Services regulations declaring students with unsatisfactory standing no longer exempt from compulsory military service.
About 14 other Canadian universities where mid-term examinations are held after Christmas have not yet reported the number of students whose military deferments will be cancelled but it is expected their officials will follow the same procedure.
B. C. "U" SETS PACE The largest number of students told they must leave their studies was at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver where 152 students must now report to their National Selective Service boards. By contrast, Dalhousie University in Halifax dropped only 11.
The names of 100 students at the University of Toronto have been handed to National Selective Service headquarters, most of them in first year applied science and engineering. The university senate will meet again in February when another group - mostly art students - will be required to discontinue their studies.
Eighty-nine students at Queen's University in Kingston, Ont., are now subject to military call with arts students forming the majority of those affected. The University of Manitoba in Winnipeg has dropped 97 students because of unsatisfactory academic records and of these 89 are young men who will now be subject to military call-up. At the University of Alberta at Edmonton, 75 students with low standing at their mid-term examinations will be allowed to remain in classes until they are called up, President Robert Newton said.
THOSE STILL TO ACT Among the universities where mid-term examinations have not yet been held or are in progress now are McGill and the University of Montreal in Montreal, Laval University in Quebec, McMaster in Hamilton and the University of Western Ontario in London, Ont.
A conference of Canada's university leaders held in Ottawa last week-end drafted a wartime program for their institutions which is expected to bring "ruthless reduction" in the number of students in arts courses and a virtual rationing of higher education.
[Read between the lines here: Canadian universities, undoubtedly under pressure from national mobilization, decided that students with arbitrarily 'bad' grades or in the arts should be booted out of school and sent to the military.]
