She had spoken of the city and wanting to live there many times before and while a part of him was glad she had finally found home in somewhere she loved, Matias’s heart ached at the distance. They hadn’t seen each other for about eighty years and they weighed heavily on him. Even now, reading the headline of her death. He knew she was a vampire, an immortal like he, and had to fake her death every so often. And seeing as she had been involved in an agricultural project, it wasn’t a far stretch to think that it was yet another one of her false endings. But then why had Damian told him about it? Matias didn’t wait to find out from another source, he jumped on the first flight to Mexico, specifically San Miguel de Allende.

Seeing as he had been in New Orleans at the time, the flight was rather long and he was restless throughout the flight. The elderly woman sitting next to him tried to request a change of seat but the flight was full until the layover and he was seated in between a pair of restless travelers who had drugged themselves to sleep for the entire flight. Once the plane landed he was grateful for his upgrade to first class and was one of the first few people out of it. He ran out of the airport, ignoring all who yelled at him in spanish, and hailed a cab as soon as he was outside. 

“El Centro, por favor.” He spoke through heavy breaths.

The cab driver arched a brow, “Algo urjente, caballero?” He had asked if it was urgent.

Matias nodded and sat back in his seat, grateful that the cab driver, Miguel, did not ask another question. It was midday and there was a little bit of traffic but the driver seemed to know his way around the backstreets.

It took them about twenty minutes to get to the center of San Miguel and Matias practically hopped out of the cab, tipping Miguel generously.

He ran through the streets, ignoring all the vendors and all the commotion that was usually brought on by tourists in the city. He only stopped to ask for directions when he needed them, not having bothered to have obtained a map at the airport. Damian had been able to get him an address a couple of weeks ago and it took him an additional hour to finally find the house.

It wasn’t the perfect size of a home, almost like a cottage, and there were small gardens in the front yard. He took a deep breath and opened the front gate with a flick of his hand. He then walked over to the door, slowly, and when he finally arrived in front of it his hand trembled as it reached forward. He knocked on the door, once, twice and stepped back as he waited. Would Yara open? Would someone else? His heart thrummed against his chest, anxiously awaiting the truth. 

He could hear footsteps approaching and when the door swung open, he sighed in relief. It was Yara. She kept herself away from the sunlight but squinted through the slight sting as she recognized who had arrived at her doorstep.

“Matias?” she frowned and took a step back.

Matias was at a loss for words. He practically hopped into her house and in one movement he swung his arms around her and embraced her tightly. He took in her scent, not minding the fact that her temperature ran much cooler than his, and had never been happier to see her in his life.

She awkwardly embraced him, sinking into the hug soon after and let a few moments pass before pulling away. “I - I’m glad to see you, but...what are you doing here?” She shook her head, “I’ve been very careful about this place, it’s under a different name and everything.”

He nodded, “I had it on good authority that you lived here.”

She arched a brow, “Matias...have you been spying on me?”

Matias narrowed his eyes slightly and smirked, “It’s not technically spying if it’s just a friend looking out for a friend?” He offered as innocently as he could.

She didn’t buy it, of course she didn’t. Yara knew him better than anything ever did or could. But she went along with it regardless and he muttered a silent prayer for having to keep Damian out of this. “Well, since you’re here now, would you like some tea or coffee? I might have some food.”

He hadn’t expected to stay, or perhaps he wasn’t sure what would happen if he had indeed found her alive and well, but he couldn’t refuse the offer. Matias smiled, “Coffee sounds like a great idea right now.”

“The sun’s going down soon, I can show you around if you’d like.”

“I really would like that.”

For the first time in his long life, he was glad that the news had indeed been misinformed.
